A video of a tourist guide terrified by the sight of a bridge’s glass bottom cracking has gone viral recently in East Taihang Mountains, in Handan city, north China's Hebei Province. The glass skywalk hangs 1,180 meters above a valley and stretches 266 meters in length. Just for fun, shattering glass is added as a special effect to give the already-terrifying experience extra zing. The management assured that workers check the glass panels daily to ensure the safety of visitors.

Millions of Chinese are now in the middle of family reunions to celebrate Spring Festival -or the Lunar New Year -- the most important holiday on the calendar.
Roughly 200 (m) million people are estimated to have moved across China's vast territory in recent weeks to make their annual pilgrimage to their families.
But for (m) millions of these -- times are tough.
The government has pledged to radically reform loss-making state-run enterprises -- which will almost certainly add massively to the growing problem of unemployment.
For these, Spring Festival may be a break -- but they are uncertain about what work they will return to once the holiday ends.
Spring Festival -- or the Lunar New Year -- is a time for celebration and feasting -- and the Han household in China's Hebei province is intent on doing just that.
It is the only time of the year that twenty-four year old Han Huimin reunites with her father and sister.
Since her mother died seven years ago, she has become the head cook at such gatherings.
But the meal will be simple -- boiled dumplings.
A more sumptuous banquet is impossible now for the Han family -- but they say they are glad for what they have.
While overall China's economy has grown almost miraculously in the past twenty years, for many individuals times are tough, and getting worse.
Han Huimin is one of an estimated seventy (m) million Chinese who have left their hometowns to find work.
Chinese workers lose health insurance and other social services when they leave their registered hometowns -- usually small villages like this one.
But many end up travelling for the chance of higher pay or are forced to move after losing their jobs.
Huimin moved to the Hebei provincial capital, Shijiazhuang.
She found work in a state-owned factory but was laid off last year.
A loan then enabled her to open a beauty salon -- but the business failed.
Now she's jobless again.
And she's afraid she won't be able to contribute her fair share towards the family's income.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
"If I cannot make any money, it will be very difficult for my father who just earns very little. He has to give money to my younger sister to support her study, food and clothing. If I don't have any income, our lives will be really difficult, very difficult."

One of the worst fears of the Chinese leadership is growing numbers of cases like Han Huimin's will lead to mass unrest.
A thousand factory workers laid off with little compensation recently clogged the busy industrial center of Wuhan in protest.
Such incidents have become more common over the last year.
Huimin says she's not one for protesting -- and that she still hopes she'll find a job to support her and her family.
The sparse one-room house tells of a simple life.
For the time being, the Spring Festival holiday distracts the family from what might lie ahead.
And, as is traditional for this season -- they hope the coming year will bring something better.

Hebei (Chinese: 河北; pinyin: 
Héběi; postal: Hopeh) is a province of China in the North China region. Its one-character abbreviation is "冀" (jì), named after Ji Province, a Han Dynasty province (zhou) that included what is now southern Hebei. The name Hebei means "north of the river", referring to its location entirely to the north of the Yellow River.
Hebei was formed in 1928 after the central government dissolved the province of Chihli (直隸), which means "Directly Ruled (by the Imperial Court)".
Beijing and Tianjin Municipalities, which border each other, were carved out of Hebei. The province borders Liaoning to the northeast, Inner Mongolia to the north, Shanxi to the west, Henan to the south, and Shandong to the southeast. Bohai Bay of the Yellow Sea is to the east. A small part of Hebei, Sanhe Exclave, consisting of Sanhe, Dachang Hui Autonomous County, and Xianghe County, an exclave disjointed from the rest of the province, is wedged between the municipalities of Beijing and Tianjin.

Province
A province is almost always an administrative division, within a country or state. The term derives from the ancient Roman provincia, which was the major territorial and administrative unit of the Roman Empire's territorial possessions outside Italy. The term is now used in many countries.
In many countries with no actual provinces, "the provinces" or "the province" means outside the capital city.
Etymology
The English word "province" is attested since about 1330 and derives from the 13th-century Old French "province", which itself comes from the Latin word "provincia", which referred to the sphere of authority of a magistrate; in particular, to a foreign territory.
A popular etymology is from Latin"pro-" ("on behalf of") and "vincere" ("to triumph" or "to take control of"). Thus a "province" would a territory or function that a Roman magistrate held control of on behalf of his government. In fact, the word Province is an ancient term from public law, which means: "office belonging to a magistrate". This agrees with the Latin term's earlier usage as a generic term for a jurisdiction under Roman law.

Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year is an important Chinese festival celebrated at the turn of the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar. It is also known as the Spring Festival, the literal translation of the modern Chinese name. Celebrations traditionally run from the evening preceding the first day, to the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first calendar month. The first day of the New Year falls on the new moon between 21 January and 20 February. In 2016, the first day of Chinese New Year falls on Monday, 8 February.
The New Year festival is centuries old and gains significance because of several myths and traditions. Traditionally, the festival was a time to honour deities as well as ancestors. Chinese New Year is celebrated in countries and territories with significant Chinese populations, including Mainland China, Hong Kong,Macau, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mauritius, and the Philippines. Chinese New Year is considered a major holiday for the Chinese and has had influence on the lunar new year celebrations of its geographic neighbours.

Snow and sleet hit cities in north China's Hebei Province on Friday, affecting traffic. Heavy snow swept across Zhangjiakou City as of Friday evening, forcing all expressways in the city to be closed on Saturday morning. Snow packed on expressways as thick as roughly 20 centimeters. Snow-removing vehicles and cleaners were dispatched to clear the expressways. Up to Saturday morning, all 446 buses from the Zhangjiakou Bus Station to different cities have been suspended. The temperatures in Zhangjiakou City and Chengde City were brought down to minus five degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, snow and sleet also hit Hebei's more southern Shijiazhuang City and Baoding City on Friday. At least one dead, 34 missing as rain lashes Hebei Province
China's northern provinces are bracing for the country's worst rainfall this year. In Hebei Province, at least one person has died and 34 others remain missing because of floods. China's capital city Beijing has also been lashed by torrential rains. Heavy rains in neighboring Tianjin city have caused traffic chaos and cancellation of several flights. In Xinxiang in Henan Province, the local weather department has recorded over 300 millimeters of rainfall during the past few hours. Snow Hit N China's Hebei Province
Snow and sleet hit cities in north China's Hebei Province on Friday, affecting traffic. Heavy snow swept across Zhangjiakou City as of Friday evening, forcing all expressways in the city to be closed on Saturday morning. Snow packed on expressways as thick as roughly 20 centimeters. Snow-removing vehicles and cleaners were dispatched to clear the expressways. Up to Saturday morning, all 446 buses from the Zhangjiakou Bus Station to different cities have been suspended. The temperatures in Zhangjiakou City and Chengde City were brought down to minus five degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, snow and sleet also hit Hebei's more southern Shijiazhuang City and Baoding City on Friday. For these, Spring Festival may be a break -- but they are uncertain about what work they will return to once the holiday ends.
Spring Festival -- or the Lunar New Year -- is a time for celebration and feasting -- and the Han household in China's Hebei province is intent on doing just that.
It is the only time of the year that twenty-four year old Han Huimin reunites with her father and sister.
Since her mother died seven years ago, she has become the head cook at such gatherings.
But the meal will be simple -- boiled dumplings.
A more sumptuous banquet is impossible now for the Han family -- but they say they are glad for what they have.
While overall China's economy has grown almost miraculously in the past twenty years, for many individuals times are tough, and getting worse.
Han Huimin is one of an estimated seventy (m) million Chinese who have left their hometowns to find work.
Chinese workers lose health insurance and other social services when they leave their registered hometowns -- usually small villages like this one.
But many end up travelling for the chance of higher pay or are forced to move after losing their jobs.
Huimin moved to the Hebei provincial capital, Shijiazhuang.
She found work in a state-owned factory but was laid off last year.
A loan then enabled her to open a beauty salon -- but the business failed.
Now she's jobless again.
And she's afraid she won't be able to contribute her fair share towards the family's income.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
"If I cannot make any money, it will be very difficult for my father who just earns very little. He has to give money to my younger sister to support her study, food and clothing. If I don't have any income, our lives will be really difficult, very difficult."

One of the worst fears of the Chinese leadership is growing numbers of cases like Han Huimin's will lead to mass unrest.
A thousand factory workers laid off with little compensation recently clogged the busy industrial center of Wuhan in protest.
Such incidents have become more common over the last year.
Huimin says she's not one for protesting -- and that she still hopes she'll find a job to support her and her family.
The sparse one-room house tells of a simple life.
For the time being, the Spring Festival holiday distracts the family from what might lie ahead.
And, as is traditional for this season -- they hope the coming year will bring something better.

China's northern provinces are bracing for the country's worst rainfall this year. In Hebei Province, at least one person has died and 34 others remain missing because of floods. China's capital city Beijing has also been lashed by torrential rains. Heavy rains in neighboring Tianjin city have caused traffic chaos and cancellation of several flights. In Xinxiang in Henan Province, the local weather department has recorded over 300 millimeters of rainfall during the past few hours.

Snow and sleet hit cities in north China's Hebei Province on Friday, affecting traffic.
Heavy snow swept across Zhangjiakou City as of Friday evening, forcing all expressways in the city to be closed on Saturday morning.
Snow packed on expressways as thick as roughly 20 centimeters. Snow-removing vehicles and cleaners were dispatched to clear the expressways.
Up to Saturday morning, all 446 buses from the Zhangjiakou Bus Station to different cities have been suspended.
The temperatures in Zhangjiakou City and Chengde City were brought down to minus five degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, snow and sleet also hit Hebei's more southern Shijiazhuang City and Baoding City on Friday.

Visiting Beijing with kids
Beijing is a place of contradictions. It's old and brand new, fast and slow, welcoming and shy, loud and quiet, tiny and huge, clean and filthy... all at the same time. We really enjoyed exploring the city's sights, parks, and hutongs (old neighbourhoods). We spent some time like tourists and stayed in a hostel and then 10 days living like locals in an apartment while Kyla was away in the USA. Calais celebrated her 7th birthday while we were here so it will always have a special place in our hearts. We feel like there's still a lot more to do, so we'll likely come back some day. The temple monastery of Xumi-Fushou-Miao is one of the most impressive buildings in the city. Translated, the temple's name is, "Happiness and Longevity of the Summer Hill". The temple was built in 1780 to mark the visit to China of a senior Tibetan religious dignitary, the sixth Panchen Lama, and is a replica of what was his own monastery in Tibet.

The magnificent opulence of the Pavilion was a reflection of China's vast wealth. Beijing is a place of contradictions. It's old and brand new, fast and slow, welcoming and shy, loud and quiet, tiny and huge, clean and filthy... all at the same time.
We really enjoyed exploring the city's sights, parks, and hutongs (old neighbourhoods). We spent some time like tourists and stayed in a hostel and then 10 days living like locals in an apartment while Kyla was away in the USA.
Calais celebrated her 7th birthday while we were here so it will always have a special place in our hearts.
We feel like there's still a lot more to do, so we'll likely come back some day.

We really enjoyed exploring the city's sights, parks, and hutongs (old neighbourhoods). We spent some time like tourists and stayed in a hostel and then 10 days living like locals in an apartment while Kyla was away in the USA.

BEIJING — The Chinese government is embarking on an ambitious project to merge several megacities with the capital Beijing and create a super metropolis capable of housing as many as 130 million people, the New York Times reported.
The megalopolis, called Jing-Jin-Ji, would link Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province, will be spread over 82,000 square miles, about six times the size of New York City, but with a population of as much as one third of the United States.
The plan aims to revamp northern China's economy, by moving parts of Beijing's bureaucracy, factories and hospitals to the hinterland, while offering new services that are lacking in areas around Beijing such as bus terminals, schools, cinemas and parks.
A subway and better light rail system are also under construction and will open in the next three to five years. A new bridge over the Chaobai River will connect to Beijing.
With this new super city, the Chinese government aims to assign new economic rules to the cities: Beijing will focus on culture and technology, Tianjin will become a research base for manufacturing and Hebei will more likely focus on minor industries, such as textiles.
The entire project, which has the support of President Xi Jinping, is likely to see a deep reconsideration of how taxes are collected and distributed within the territory, which would mean instituting property taxes and allowing local governments to keep them.
"This is a huge project and is more complicated than roads and rail," Wang Hu, a historian of Beijing's development was quoted by the New York Times as saying. "But if it can succeed, it will change the face of northern China."

When blocking an attack or nearing an opponent, baji quan techniques emphasize striking major points of vulnerability, namely the thorax (trunk of the body), legs and neck.

Filmed at the Chengde Mountain Resort (Bishu Shanzhuang, 避暑山庄) in Chengde (承德市), northeastern Hebei province, northern China. Chengde is located 139 miles (224 km) northeast of Beijing and borders Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Beijing, and Tianjin. It is also located near Qinhuangdao and Tangshan on the Bohai Gulf, as well as landlocked Zhangjiakou. Video released by the Chengde Qing Music Research Association (承德清音研究会) on June 1, 2010.
Built between 1703 and 1792, the resort, a vast complex of palaces and administrative and ceremonial buildings covering a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.6 square km), took 89 years to complete. The Kangxi, Qianlong, and Jiaqing emperors often spent several months of each year here to escape the summer heat in the capital city of Beijing, and the palace zone in the southern part of the resort was therefore designed to resemble the Forbidden City in Beijing. It consists of two parts: a court in front, where the emperor received high officials, nobles of various minority nationalities, and foreign envoys; and bedchambers in the rear, which were the imperial family's living quarters. For all intents and purposes, Chengde served as the Qing empire's second political and cultural center.
When the Qing Dynasty fell in 1912, almost all of the imperial court musicians were dismissed from their positions and many suffered penury upon their return to society. Tang Xifu (唐锡福), a sihu (四胡) player and percussionist who had been one of the principal musicians in the palace orchestra, in 1920 revived the Qing court entertainment music called Qingyin shifan (清音十番), forming the reconstituted "Chengde Qing Music Society" (承德清音会). This group used handwritten scores in gongche notation (工尺谱) for 23 pieces, which had been collected from musicians who had been in the court orchestra. This ensemble, which used some of the very same musical instruments that had been used in the palace banquet orchestra (yanxiang yuedui, 宴享乐队), performed mainly for the performers' own enjoyment, but also participated in life cycle events of the area's elite residents, whose enthusiasm for this musical tradition had led to its revival. Performing for weddings and funerals in the courtyards of wealthy families that had formerly been associated with the Qing court, these musicians' efforts were at this time usually rewarded by nothing more than a meal. By the late 1930s the society's roster included 32 people, and for some of its activities up to 40 people participated. During the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) the palace scores were lost, but, miraculously, handwritten copies of the scores for 16 pieces were later found to have been retained in the private collections of some elderly performers, and the tradition was again brought back to life in 1982.
Chengde Qingyin Hui was included as one of 130 traditions in the First Batch of the Hebei Province Intangible Cultural Heritage List (河北省第一批省级非物质文化遗产名录), announced on June 6, 2006. On May 18, 2010 Chengde Qingyin Hui was one of 15 traditions from Hebei province included in the List of Recommended Projects for the Third Batch of the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China (第三批国家级非物质文化遗产名录推荐项目名单), although it was not subsequently selected for inclusion in the third batch of the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China in 2011.

Bajiquan is a Chinese martial art that features explosive, short-range power and is famous for its elbow and shoulder strikes. It originated in the Hebei Province in Northern China
Baji quan was originally called bazi quan (巴子拳 or 鈀子拳) or "rake fist" because the fists, held loosely and slightly open, are used to strike downwards in a rake-like fashion. The name was considered to be rather crude in its native tongue, so it was changed to baji quan. The term baji comes from the Chinese classic, the Yijing (I-Ching), and signifies an "extension of all directions". In this case, it means "including everything" or "the universe"
Baji quan opens the opponent's arms forcibly (qiang kai men 强開門) and mount attacks at high, mid, and low levels of the body (san pan lian ji 三盤連擊). It is most useful in close combat, as it focuses on elbow, knee, shoulder and hip strikes. When blocking an attack or nearing an opponent, baji quan techniques emphasize striking major points of vulnerability, namely the thorax (trunk of the body), legs and neck.
The major features of baji include elbow strikes, arm/fist punches, hip checks and strikes with the shoulder. All techniques are executed with a short power, developed through training; among Chinese martial artists, baji is known for its fast movements. Baji focuses on infighting, entering from a longer range with a distinctive charging step (zhen jiao).
The essence of baji quan lies in jin, or power-issuing methods, particularly fa jing (explosive power). The style contains six types of jin, eight different ways to hit and several principles of power usage. Most of baji quan's moves utilize a one-hit push-strike method from very close range. The bulk of the damage is dealt through the momentary acceleration that travels up from the waist to the limb and further magnified by the charging step known as zhen jiao.
The mechanics of jin are developed through many years of practice and baji quan is known for its strenuous lower-body training and its emphasis on the horse stance. Its horse stance is higher than that of typical Long Fist styles. Like other styles, there is also "the arrow-bow stance", "the one-leg stance", "the empty stance" (xūbù 虚步), "the drop stance" (pūbù 仆步), etc. There are eight different hand poses, in addition to different types of breathing and zhen jiao.
