Marrakesh or Marrakech (/məˈrækɛʃ/ or /ˌmærəˈkɛʃ/;Berber: Meṛṛakec, ⵎⴻⵕⵕⴰⴽⴻⵛ; Arabic: مراكش, Murrākuš) is a major city of Morocco. It is the fourth largest city in the country, after Casablanca, Rabat and Fes. It is the capital city of the mid-southwestern region of Marrakesh-Asfi. Located to the north of the foothills of the snow-capped Atlas Mountains, Marrakesh is located 580 km (360 mi) southwest of Tangier, 327 km (203 mi) southwest of the Moroccan capital of Rabat, 239 km (149 mi) south of Casablanca, and 246 km (153 mi) northeast of Agadir.
Marrakesh is possibly the most important of Morocco's four former imperial cities (cities that were built by Moroccan Berber empires). The region has been inhabited by Berber farmers since Neolithic times, but the actual city was founded in 1062 by Abu Bakr ibn Umar, chieftain and cousin of Almoravid king Yusuf ibn Tashfin. In the 12th century, the Almoravids built many madrasas (Koranic schools) and mosques in Marrakesh that bear Andalusian influences. The red walls of the city, built by Ali ibn Yusuf in 1122–1123, and various buildings constructed in red sandstone during this period, have given the city the nickname of the "Red City" or "Ochre City". Marrakesh grew rapidly and established itself as a cultural, religious, and trading centre for the Maghreb and sub-Saharan Africa; Jemaa el-Fnaa is the busiest square in Africa.
Morocco (i/məˈrɒkoʊ/; Arabic: المغرب al-Maġrib; Berber: ⵍⵎⴰⵖⵔⵉⴱl'Meġrib; French: Maroc), officially the Kingdom of Morocco, is a country in the Maghreb region of North Africa. Geographically, Morocco is characterized by a rugged mountainous interior and large portions of desert. It is one of only three countries (with Spain and France) to have both Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines. The Arabic name al-Mamlakah al-Maghribiyah (Arabic: المملكة المغربية, meaning "The Western Kingdom") and Al-Maghrib (Arabic: المغرب, meaning "The West") are commonly used as alternate names.
Morocco has a population of over 33.8 million and an area of 446,550 km2 (172,410 sq mi). Its political capital is Rabat, although the largest city is Casablanca; other major cities include Marrakesh, Tangier, Tetouan, Salé, Fes, Agadir, Meknes, Oujda, Kenitra, and Nador. A historically prominent regional power, Morocco has a history of independence not shared by its neighbours. Its distinct culture is a blend of Arab, indigenous Berber, Sub-Saharan African, and European influences.
Street food is ready-to-eat food or drink sold by a hawker, or vendor, in a street or other public place, such as at a market or fair. It is often sold from a portable food booth, food cart, or food truck and meant for immediate consumption. Some street foods are regional, but many have spread beyond their region of origin. Most street foods are classed as both finger food and fast food, and are cheaper on average than restaurant meals. According to a 2007 study from the Food and Agriculture Organization, 2.5 billion people eat street food every day.
Today, people may purchase street food for a number of reasons, such as to get flavorful food for a reasonable price in a sociable setting, to experience ethnic cuisines, or for nostalgia.
Small fried fish were a street food in ancient Greece, however, Theophrastus held the custom of street food in low regard. Evidence of a large number of street food vendors were discovered during the excavation of Pompeii. Street food was widely consumed by poor urban residents of ancient Rome whose tenement homes did not have ovens or hearths. Here, chickpea soup with bread and grain paste were common meals. In ancient China, street food generally catered to the poor, however, wealthy residents would send servants to buy street food and bring it back for them to eat in their homes.

This is from my visit to Morocco (Marakech and Agadir) in october 2011. The film shows: The Medina (old town) with the wellknown Jema el-Fna square during daytime and nightmarket. At the Medina you find a lot of Riads, small family own hotels with an open space/garden in the middle. Jardin Majorelle, was own by Yves Saint Laurent until his death in 2008. In the Souk (at the Medina) you can buy almost everything. It is also hard to find the way there. It is like walking in a maze. A restaurant visit with a balancing dance performance is also shown on the film. A horseride in the evening. The wellknown Koutoubia mosque. Maybe the most common view from Marrakesh. The ruins of Palais el Badi. The ruins have an interesting story. Finally a bustour to Agadir and a few pictures from there. The c...

1.Snail soup Particularly popular in Marrakech, snails can be found everywhere in the Jemma el Fna square. This flavoursome broth is supposed to have restorative and digestive benefits, which is almost reason enough to try. If that weren’t tempting enough, however, these distinctive chocolate brown snails are tender with a delicious savoury taste, and served in a broth bursting with flavours and spices. 2.Orange juice Morocco’s oranges are famous worldwide, so it’s no surprise that you can find some of the best orange juice on the streets of Marrakech, sourced from the countless orange trees in the city’s limitless alleys and courtyards. At less than a pound, you can get a full glass of this refreshing, tangy juice, perfect for recovering after a long day’s exploring in the sun. Certainly ...

Travel video about destination Marrakesh in Morocco. Marrakesh, the 'red pearl' of Morocco was founded by Yusuf ibn Tashfin in 1062. It is one of the country's four Royal Cities. Up to the beginning of the 20th century, the city was a trading centre for both the north of Morocco and the Sahara and the monarchs of various dynasties made Marrakesh their capital city. The large souks of Marrakesh's Medina are divided into numerous sections and stock just about everything known to man! In spite of the city's apparent calm, there is much activity and the traffic is surprisingly well disciplined. Marrakesh has the largest souks in Morocco. As well as shoes and clothing, they stock all the necessities of life and of course, bargaining and haggling are the norm! Daily life in the souks is domi...
Travel video about destination Marrakesh in Morocco. In 1062 A.D. the Almovarides Dynasty founded the city of Marrakesh, known as, “The Red Pearl“. The colourful Spice Market is only one of several markets, otherwise known as ‘souks’ where baskets brim over with ginger, saffron, caraway and coriander. The souks are divided into different areas and specialities including various craft workshops in which coppersmiths and potters offer their goods for sale. Even today the bazaars still display the age-old splendour of this important trading city and caravan destination.Snake charmers still captivate curious onlookers and the Jemaa-El-Fna Square with its tricksters, minstrels and other entertainers is one of the oldest open-air variety shows in Africa. Each magnificent sunset shows why Marrake...

marrakech
It's close to midnight
Packed my bags and I'm leaving
Ride the night train
To where I know you're gonna be waiting
And yesterday will fade like snow in the sunlight
Melt away from my memory
Through the darkness until I feel the light's caress
I'm on my way to the streets of Marrakech
The room is crowded
I can feel my body heat rising
Above the voices
The echoes of a train approaching
A colorful parade like flames in the dark night
Leads the way to my fantasy
Through the darkness until I feel the light's caress
I'm on my way to the streets of Marrakech
Marrakech
The streets of Marrakech
Marrakech
The streets of Marrakech
And yesterday will fade like snow in the sunlight
I'm on my way, yes, I'm on my way
I'm on my way to the streets of Marrakech
