Software used...NewTek LightWave 3D, and CG Supervised by Samuli Torssonen.
Samuli explains. "At the height of production we still only had 10 to 15 guys that were full-time, although we had some trainees to help with the rendering and generating some of the assets. We had only 50 computers, standard PCs i7 cards and 16Gb of RAM. But in our search, some amazing people started to pop out of the community wanting to help. Many were LightWave artists from California, really experienced guys who had been working on shows like Battlestar Galactica, the original Star Treks and Firefly. So we flew them to Finland and rented a couple of flats near the the office."

Sky
The sky (or celestial dome) is everything that lies above the surface of the Earth, including the atmosphere and outer space.
In the field of astronomy, the sky is also called the celestial sphere. This is viewed from Earth's surface as an imaginary dome where the sun, stars, planets, and the moon are seen to be traveling. The celestial sphere is conventionally divided into regions called constellations. Usually, the term sky is used informally as the point of view from the Earth's surface; however, the meaning and usage can vary. In some cases, such as in discussing the weather, the sky refers to only the lower, more dense portions of the atmosphere.
During daylight, the sky appears to be blue because air scatters blue sunlight more than it scatters red. At night, the sky appears to be a mostly dark surface or region scattered with stars. During the day, the Sun can be seen in the sky unless obscured by clouds. In the night sky (and to some extent during the day) the moon, planets and stars are visible in the sky. Some of the natural phenomena seen in the sky are clouds, rainbows, and aurorae. Lightning and precipitation can also be seen in the sky during storms. Birds, insects, aircraft, and kites are often considered to fly in the sky. Due to human activities, smog during the day and light pollution during the night are often seen above large cities.

Iron Sky
Iron Sky is a 2012 Finnish-Australian-Germancomic science fiction action film directed by Timo Vuorensola and written by Johanna Sinisalo and Michael Kalesniko. It tells the story of a group of Nazi Germans who, having been defeated in 1945, fled to the Moon, where they built a space fleet to return in 2018 and conquer Earth.
Iron Sky comes from the creators of Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning and was produced by Tero Kaukomaa of Blind Spot Pictures and Energia Productions, co-produced by New Holland Pictures and 27 Films, and co-financed by numerous individual supporters; Samuli Torssonen was responsible for the computer-generated imagery. It was theatrically released throughout Europe in April 2012. A director's cut of the film with 20 additional minutes was released on DVD and Blu-ray on 11 March 2014.
A video-game adaptation titled Iron Sky: Invasion was released in October 2012. A sequel, titled Iron Sky: The Coming Race, is currently being crowdfunded through Indiegogo and is slated for a 2017 release.

Visual effects
In filmmaking, visual effects (abbreviated VFX) are the processes by which imagery is created and/or manipulated outside the context of a live action shot. Visual effects involve the integration of live-action footage and generated imagery to create environments which look realistic, but would be dangerous, expensive, impractical, or simply impossible to capture on film. Visual effects using computer generated imagery have recently become accessible to the independent filmmaker with the introduction of affordable and easy-to-use animation and compositing software.
Timing
Visual effects are often integral to a movie's story and appeal. Although most visual effects work is completed during post-production, it usually must be carefully planned and choreographed in pre-production and production. Visual effects primarily executed in Post-Production with the use of multiple tools and technologies such as graphic design, modeling, animation and similar software, while special effects such as explosions and car chases are made on set. A visual effects supervisor is usually involved with the production from an early stage to work closely with production and the film's director design, guide and lead the teams required to achieve the desired effects.

This is a tool I developed for the SKY Commercial - Solo Per Te (Crystals). My main focus was to create a tool that other artists could use pretty easily but also something that could adapt to different VFX shots quickly. I had to create it making it possible to use the particles to "materialize" an object from air, but also to constrain the particles on a surface to morph an object into another one. 3 different particle systems were used to achieve the final effect. "At the height of production we still only had 10 to 15 guys that were full-time, although we had some trainees to help with the rendering and generating some of the assets. We had only 50 computers, standard PCs i7 cards and 16Gb of RAM. But in our search, some amazing people started to pop out of the community wanting to help. Many were LightWave artists from California, really experienced guys who had been working on shows like Battlestar Galactica, the original Star Treks and Firefly. "Heart of Sky"...Taking inspiration from Mayan myth, a story about how lives might have been created on earth, in a science fiction style. Most of the references, which helped our design, are from a book called Popol Vuh. The book is a corpus of historical narrative about post-Classic K'iche' kingdom, which is also considered as Mayan bible.

Samuli explains. "At the height of production we still only had 10 to 15 guys that were full-time, although we had some trainees to help with the rendering and generating some of the assets. We had only 50 computers, standard PCs i7 cards and 16Gb of RAM. But in our search, some amazing people started to pop out of the community wanting to help. Many were LightWave artists from California, really experienced guys who had been working on shows like Battlestar Galactica, the original Star Treks and Firefly. So we flew them to Finland and rented a couple of flats near the the office."

This is a tool I developed for the SKY Commercial - Solo Per Te (Crystals). My main focus was to create a tool that other artists could use pretty easily but also something that could adapt to different VFX shots quickly.
I had to create it making it possible to use the particles to "materialize" an object from air, but also to constrain the particles on a surface to morph an object into another one.
3 different particle systems were used to achieve the final effect.

They diversified like mad and ranged from the size of a sparrow to that of an F-16 jet-fighter. But pterosaurs have long proved a mystery to scientists, ever since the first fossil was discovered in Germany in 1784. How did they catch and kill their prey?
