Expanded universe
The term expanded universe (sometimes called an extended universe) is generally used to denote the 'extension' of a media franchise (i.e. a television show, series of featured films, etc.) with other media (generally comics and original novels). This typically involves new adventures for existing characters already developed within the franchise; however in some case entirely new characters and complex mythology are developed. This is not the same as an adaptation, which is a retelling of the same story, usually on a different medium. Nearly every media franchise with a committed fan base has some form of expanded universe. A very popular example of this is fan fictions. Fan fictions are stories created by a fan base that portrays existing characters in new and different ways.
Examples
Two prominent examples of media franchises with an expanded universe are Star Wars and Star Trek - both have a wide range of original novels, comics, video games, and other media that add to the mythology of each universe in different ways. In both cases entirely new characters and situations have been developed that exist only within the Expanded Universe media.

DC Extended Universe
The DC Extended Universe (DCEU) is an American media franchise and shared fictional universe that is centered on a series of superhero films, produced by Warner Bros. Pictures and based on characters that appear in publications by DC Comics. The shared universe, much like the original DC Universe in comic books, will be established by crossing over common plot elements, settings, cast, and characters.
The first film released in the DCEU was Man of Steel (2013), a reboot of the Superman film series. The next film to be released will be Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), followed by Suicide Squad (2016), with both in post-production and Wonder Woman (2017), which is currently filming. Other films in development include, The Flash (2018), Aquaman (2018), Shazam (2019), Cyborg (2020), Green Lantern Corps (2020), and a two-part Justice League film, with Part One releasing in 2017, and Part Two in 2019. Warner Bros. has also announced a sequel to Man of Steel and a stand-alone Batman film, with the intent for both to be released before 2020. All films are being distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is an upcoming American superhero film featuring the DC Comics characters Batman and Superman, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. It is intended to be the follow-up to 2013's Man of Steel and the second installment in the DC Extended Universe. The film is directed by Zack Snyder, with a screenplay written by Chris Terrio and David S. Goyer. The film stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter, and Gal Gadot. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will be the first live-action film to feature both Batman and Superman, as well as the first theatrical film to feature live-action portrayals of Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash and Cyborg.
The film was announced at 2013 San Diego Comic-Con International, after the release of Man of Steel. Snyder and Goyer were both brought back in June 2013. Snyder stated that the film would take inspiration from the Batman limited series The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller, but that it would follow an original premise. Pre-production began at East Los Angeles College in October 2013, with principal photography starting in May 2014 in Detroit, Michigan, with additional filming in Chicago, Illinois. Filming concluded in December 2014. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is scheduled to be released in the United States on March 25, 2016, in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D.

It’s a bird. It’s a plane. No, it’s just Geoff Johns casually saving the DCEU. It’s no industry secret that Warner Brothers is disappointed with the dismal reactions to their last two DC set feature film efforts; Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad. Though the films saw some decent returns at the box office, audience and critical reception was mostly unkind to the Zack Snyder-created universe that’s been described as dark, cynical and devoid of any humor. Suicide Squad made attempts to remedy the dour setting and characters, but failed to turn it into the crowd-pleasing romp that was expected. In an effort to go into damage control, the studio quietly made famed comic book writer and nerd hero Geoff Johns a senior executive in charge of DC’s next wave of films along with veteran production executive Jon Berg. Together the two are meant to be the light at the end of the DCEU’s dark and quickly crumbling tunnel and in a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Johns made it clear how he felt about the previous iterations of DC’s famous characters saying quote, “Mistakenly in the past I think the studio has said, ‘Oh, DC films are gritty and dark and that’s what makes them different.’ That couldn’t be more wrong.” Johns, famous for writing some of the most iconic iterations of DC’s heroes, continued by saying DC’s characters should be hopeful and optimistic, adding that if Batman didn’t have a glimmer of hope that he was making things better, he wouldn’t continue being Batman. It’s a nice admission of guilt from the studio division’s new leader and rare admission of fault in a business known for its non-apologies. The new stalwarts of the DC Extended Universe talk about how they are going to fix it and we’re breaking it all down for you right now! It’s a bird. It’s a plane. No, it’s just Geoff Johns casually saving the DCEU. It’s no industry secret that Warner Brothers is disappointed with the dismal reactions to their last two DC set feature film efforts; Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad. Though the films saw some decent returns at the box office, audience and critical reception was mostly unkind to the Zack Snyder-created universe that’s been described as dark, cynical and devoid of any humor. Suicide Squad made attempts to remedy the dour setting and characters, but failed to turn it into the crowd-pleasing romp that was expected. In an effort to go into damage control, the studio quietly made famed comic book writer and nerd hero Geoff Johns a senior executive in charge of DC’s next wave of films along with veteran production executive Jon Berg. Together the two are meant to be the light at the end of the DCEU’s dark and quickly crumbling tunnel and in a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Johns made it clear how he felt about the previous iterations of DC’s famous characters saying quote, “Mistakenly in the past I think the studio has said, ‘Oh, DC films are gritty and dark and that’s what makes them different.’ That couldn’t be more wrong.” Johns, famous for writing some of the most iconic iterations of DC’s heroes, continued by saying DC’s characters should be hopeful and optimistic, adding that if Batman didn’t have a glimmer of hope that he was making things better, he wouldn’t continue being Batman. It’s a nice admission of guilt from the studio division’s new leader and rare admission of fault in a business known for its non-apologies.

The Dark Knight Trilogy is a superhero film trilogy, based on the DC Comics character Batman. The trilogy consisted of Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008), & The Dark Knight Rises (2012).
Following the critical failure and box office disappointment of Batman & Robin (1997), Warner Bros. decided to reboot the film franchise. The trilogy stars Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth, Gary Oldman as James Gordon, and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox. All three films were directed, written and produced by Christopher Nolan.
Each film in the series was a box office success, in particular the second and third films, which both earned over $1 billion worldwide. As well being considered a massive improvement over the previous series of Batman films, the trilogy has received near-universal acclaim from critics and audiences, being praised for Nolan's direction, the performances of the main cast, its thematic storytelling and depth, being more grounded in reality and darker in tone, breaking certain superhero clichés, its reinvention of the source material, focusing on Bruce Wayne as the central character, its major use of practical effects over computer generated imagery, and for being a complete story-arc. The trilogy has gained widespread recognition as being both the greatest achievement of the superhero film genre and three of the best films of all time. Because the trilogy was meant to be a stand-alone series, the character is set to be rebooted once again for the upcoming DC Comics' shared universe films, starting with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016.

Russia's defence ministry allegedly tried to pass off what appeared to be stills from a mobile phone military video game as "irrefutable evidence" that the United States was cooperating with Islamic State militants in Syria on Tuesday, according to The Guardian ... was using ISIS to further their own interests in Syria ... Special Ops Squadron ... The footage actually appeared to be identical to old footage of US forces fighting in Afghanistan....
