Middlesex (/ˈmɪdəlsɛks/, abbreviation: Middx) was an administrative county in southeast England that is now mostly part of Greater London, with small sections in neighbouring counties. It was established in the Anglo-Saxon system from the territory of the Middle Saxons. The historic county included land stretching north of the River Thames from 3 miles (5 km) east to 17 miles (27 km) west of the City of London with the rivers Colne and Lea and a ridge of hills as the other boundaries. The largely low-lying county, dominated by clay in its north and alluvium on gravel in its south, was the second smallest by area in 1831.
The City of London was a county in its own right from the 12th century and was able to exert political control over Middlesex. Westminster Abbey dominated most of the early financial, judicial and ecclesiastical aspects of the county. As London grew into Middlesex, the Corporation of London resisted attempts to expand the city boundaries into the county, which posed problems for the administration of local government and justice. In the 18th and 19th centuries the population density was especially high in the southeast of the county, including the East End and West End of London. From 1855 the southeast was administered, with sections of Kent and Surrey, as part of the area of the Metropolitan Board of Works. When county councils were introduced in England in 1889 about 20% of the area of Middlesex, along with a third of its population, was transferred to the new County of London and the remainder became an administrative county governed by the Middlesex County Council that met regularly at the Middlesex Guildhall in Westminster, in the County of London. The City of London, and Middlesex, became separate counties for other purposes and Middlesex regained the right to appoint its own sheriff, lost in 1199.
The NatWest t20 Blast is a Twenty20 cricket league in England and Wales run by the ECB from 2014. The league consists of the 18 first-class county teams divided into two divisions of nine teams each. This setup, which was first announced in November 2013, replaced the Friends Life t20 competition as the main domestic Twenty20 competition in England and Wales.
The semi-finals and final of the competition are played consecutively on the same day and at the same ground, at the end of the competition. During finals day, there is a mascot derby, which is a race between mascots representing all 18 counties. Finals day is usually held at Edgbaston.
There are 18 clubs competing for the t20 title. These clubs are initially split into 2 divisions (North and South), each containing 9 teams, for the group stage of the competition. During the group stage (from May to July) each club plays 6 of the other teams in the same division twice, once at their home stadium and once at that of their opponents. They play the other two teams only once, for a total of 14 games each. Teams receive two points for a win and one point for a tie or if the match is abandoned. No points are awarded for a loss. Teams are ranked by total points, then net run rate. At the end of the group stage, the top four teams from each group enter the knockout stage.
Middlesex University is a university in Hendon, north west London, England. It is located within the historic county boundaries of Middlesex from which it takes its name. It is one of the new universities and is a member of the Million+ working group. As is the case with many former polytechnics, Middlesex can trace its history back to the 19th century, yet was not formally organised as a teaching institution until 1973.
Since 2000, the university has been reducing the number of campuses dotted around London's North Circular Road in an effort to cut costs and provide a better student experience by consolidating most of the university at the flagship campus in Hendon. As of the 2013 academic year, its estate strategy which has cost £150 million has concentrated the university on one site in north London.
In 2012, the university re-structured its academic schools to align them more closely with the needs of industry. Courses at Middlesex are now delivered by the schools of Business, Law, Art and Design, Health and Education, Media and Performing Arts and Science and Technology, alongside the university Institute for Work Based Learning.
The County Championship (currently known as the LV= County Championship because of its sponsor, Liverpool Victoria) is the domestic first-class cricket competition in England and Wales. The competition consists of eighteen clubs named after, and originally representing, historic counties, seventeen from England and one from Wales.
Until 1890, the concept of an unofficial championship existed whereby various claims would be made by or on behalf of a particular club as the "Champion County", an archaic term which now has the specific meaning of an unofficial claimant for the County Championship title prior to 1890. In contrast, the term "County Champions" applies in common parlance to a team that has won the official title since 1890.
The most usual means of claiming the unofficial title was by popular or press acclaim. In the majority of cases, the claim or proclamation was retrospective, often by cricket writers using reverse analysis via a study of known results. The unofficial title was not proclaimed in every season up to 1889 because in many cases there were not enough matches or there was simply no clear candidate. Having already been badly hit by the Seven Years' War, county cricket ceased altogether during the Napoleonic Wars and there was a period from 1797 to 1824 during which no inter-county matches took place. The concept of the unofficial title has been utilised ad hoc and relied on sufficient interest being shown.
Jeffrey Kent Eugenides (born March 8, 1960) is an American novelist and short story writer. He has written numerous short stories and essays, as well as three novels: The Virgin Suicides (1993), Middlesex (2002), and The Marriage Plot (2011). The Virgin Suicides has been filmed, while Middlesex received the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in addition to being a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, the International Dublin Literary Award, and France's Prix Médicis.
Eugenides was born in Detroit, Michigan, to a father of Greek descent and a mother of English and Irish ancestry. He attended Grosse Pointe's private University Liggett School and took his undergraduate degree at Brown University (where he became friends with contemporary Rick Moody), graduating in 1983 after taking a year off to travel across Europe and to volunteer with Mother Teresa in Calcutta, India. Of his decision to study at Brown, Eugenides later remarked "I chose Brown largely in order to study with John Hawkes, whose work I admired. I entered the honors program in English, which forced me to study the entire English tradition, beginning with Beowulf. I felt that since I was going to try to add to the tradition, I had better know something about it." He later earned an M.A. in Creative Writing from Stanford University.

His New York arrival beings an unexpected fanfare of publicity arranged by Diane "Dime" Pringle, who had met and fallen in love with Bertram at a college lecture, and has convinced her father, Julius H. Pringle, to allow his press agent, sour-puss Jonathan Sweet, to handle Bertram's publicity. The beauty shop is soon deluged with clients until actress Amy Devore hits it with a fraudulent suit for infecting her face. Bertram finds a recording made by his aunt before her death that hints at mysterious happenings at the salon, involving a Mrs. Kennar. Suspecting that his aunt had been murdered, Bertram and Dime call Mrs. Kennar to the salon but, before they see her, Ann Kuo, a Chinese attendant at the salon, and Rodney Blynn, confront her and she leaps from the window to her death. Amy tells Bertram she will not press her suit if he will allow her to take over the salon but he turns her down over the objections of his attorney Middlesex. Dottie Nickerson, a trusted employee at the salon, sees Kuo steal some letters from a customer's purse and hears her telephone Blynn. Sweet has been attacked by a mysterious assailant and Dottie visits him in the hospital and tells him what she observed. He wants to visit Blynn's apartment, but Dottie hides his trousers.

A record attendance at Lord's were treated to a fitting finale, as last man Steven Finn helped Middlesex fall over the line. Surrey set a modest 158-9 with the ever classy Sangakarra striking a superrb 70 off 42 balls. Middlesex looked as though they would chase it down easily but quickly lost 6-20, requiring unlikely batting hero Finn to save the day. This is the official channel of the ECB. Match action from the final day of the day/night Specsavers County Championship clash between Essex and Middlesex at Chelmsford. After closing the previous day on 27/0, Middlesex got off to a shaky start, losing Nick Gubbins with the first ball of the day. Despite a Nick Compton century which helped to settle the innings for the visitors, it was too little too late as Essex who won by an innings and 34 runs.
