ASHTRAY BOY Macho Champions 1995
Biography
by Jason Ankeny
Ashtray Boy is two indie pop bands in one: the first existed in Chicago, the other -- simultaneously -- in Sydney, Australia. Both were led by vocalist Randall Lee, formerly of the Cannanes and Nice; after the latter's 1993 demise, Lee began splitting his time between his native Australia and the U.S., and the first Ashtray Boy lineup formed was the American version, rounded out by future Pulsars member Dave Trumfio and drummer Justin Niimi. Their 1993 full-length, The Honeymoon Suite (featuring backing vocals from Liz Phair), was the first release issued under the name, while 1994's Macho Champions featured material from the Chicago unit as well as the Sydney group, which also featured bassist Thomas Tallis and drummer Neil Johnston. Candypants Beach, issued the following year, and 1996's The Everyman's 4th Dimension were also joint ventures from both Ashtray Boy rosters. In 2002, Lee left Australia for Vancouver B.C., where he set about putting together a Canadian lineup as well.

UNCLE WIGGLY Jump Back, Baby 1996
Biography
by Greg Prato
The New York City-based trio Uncle Wiggly originally formed in 1989, and consists of members William Berger (guitar and drums), Michael Anzalone (bass and guitar), and James Kavoussi (drums and guitar), with all three sharing vocals. Mixing concise alt-pop tunes with some retro psychedelia straight out of the '60s, Uncle Wiggly issued their debut album, He Went There So Why Don't We Go, a year later on the independent Austrian label Nur Sch Records, before signing on with Shimmy Disc, which issued the trio's next two releases: 1991's Across the Room and Into Your Lap and 1992's There Was an Elk. The trio issued a 12" EP titled Non Stuff in 1995, as well as their fourth full-length release overall, Jump Back, Baby, in 1996.
CROATAN Violent Passion Surrogate 1998
Biography
by Alex Henderson
Croatan is a noisy, abrasive, punk influenced alternative rock duo that has enjoyed a small underground following in the '90s. Forceful and dissonant, Croatan's songs weren't meant to appeal to mainstream sensibilities -- its music is strictly for rock's underground. Croatan was formed in Cincinnati, OH in 1992, when singer/guitarist Jenny and drummer Mark (both of whom strictly went by their first names) came together after having played in different Cincinnati bands. Croatan never had a bassist, but between Jenny's screaming vocals and blistering electric guitar and Mark's aggressive drumming, the group has packed a very loud punch. After playing live gigs for six years and putting out some singles, Croatan came to the attention of Man's Ruin Records and recorded its first album, Violent Passion Surrogate, in 1998. Man's Ruin released the album in January 1999. Curse of the Red Queen followed in early 2001.
CHANGE OF HEART Smile 1992
Biography
by Charlotte Dillon
The Canadian pop/rock band Change of Heart formed in 1982 and held to life for almost two fulfilling decades before calling an end to the ride, and leaving the roller coaster cars empty. Along the way, members of the group included lead vocalist Ian Blurton, drummers Ron Duffy and John Richardson, bassists Rob Taylor and John Borra, percussionist Mike Armstrong, and keyboardist Bernard Maiezza. Change of Heart recorded a number of noteworthy albums over those years, building a strong following in Canada, and then crossing into the United States. In 1986, the band recorded their first two full-length works, Northwind and 50 Ft. Up. That same big year also saw the group touring successfully, landing gigs opening for other acts, and working on their first music video. Over the next decade, several other albums hit the market, including Slowdance in 1987, Soapbox in 1989, Smile in 1992, Tummysuckle in 1995, and Steelteeth in 1997.
