Have you discovered that you need to learn about and how to write parallel codes using Message Passing Interface (MPI) for your research? This talk is aims to enable those needing to do such! Don’t worry, no prior MPI knowledge or experience is needed! MPI programs can be written in C, C++, or Fortran so prior C, C++, and/or Fortran programming experience is needed. Since there is a one-to-one mapping of MPI C calls to Fortran MPI calls, to keep the presentation straight-forward, the code examples given in the presentation will use C and/or C++, but after the talk equivalent C, C++, and Fortran programs for all examples presented will be made available. This talk will cover the following: (i) an overview of what MPI is and enables one to do, (ii) demonstrate a simple a “Hello World!” program, (iii) demonstrate how to compile and run MPI programs, (iv) present an overview of some of the basic MPI communications API calls, and (v) begin to discuss and demonstrate with sample programs how to think about and organize MPI programs to run things in parallel. (NOTE: There will be Part II talk continuing where this talk ends, i.e., the Nov. 25, 2015 SHARCNET General Interest webinar).

Message Passing Interface
Message Passing Interface (MPI) is a standardized and portable message-passing system designed by a group of researchers from academia and industry to function on a wide variety of parallel computers. The standard defines the syntax and semantics of a core of library routines useful to a wide range of users writing portable message-passing programs in different computer programming languages such as Fortran, C, C++ and Java. There are several well-tested and efficient implementations of MPI, including some that are free or in the public domain. These fostered the development of a parallel software industry, and encouraged development of portable and scalable large-scale parallel applications.
History
The message passing interface effort began in the summer of 1991 when a small group of researchers started discussions at a mountain retreat in Austria. Out of that discussion came a Workshop on Standards for Message Passing in a Distributed Memory Environment held on April 29–30, 1992 in Williamsburg, Virginia. At this workshop the basic features essential to a standard message-passing interface were discussed, and a working group established to continue the standardization process. Jack Dongarra, Tony Hey, and David W. Walker put forward a preliminary draft proposal in November 1992, this was known as MPI1. In November 1992, a meeting of the MPI working group was held in Minneapolis, at which it was decided to place the standardization process on a more formal footing. The MPI working group met every 6 weeks throughout the first 9 months of 1993. The draft MPI standard was presented at the Supercomputing '93 conference in November 1993. After a period of public comments, which resulted in some changes in MPI, version 1.0 of MPI was released in June 1994. These meetings and the email discussion together constituted the MPI Forum, membership of which has been open to all members of the high performance computing community.

Message passing
In computer science, message passing sends a message to a process (which may be an actor or object) and relies on the process and the supporting infrastructure to select and invoke the actual code to run. Message passing differs from conventional programming where a process, subroutine, or function is directly invoked by name. Message passing is key to some models of concurrency and object-oriented programming.
Message passing is used ubiquitously in modern computer software. It is used as a way for the objects that make up a program to work with each other and as a way for objects and systems running on different computers (e.g., the Internet) to interact. Message passing may be implemented by various mechanisms, including channels.
Overview
Message passing is a technique for invoking behavior (i.e., running a program) on a computer. In contrast to the traditional technique of calling a program by name, message passing uses an object model to distinguish the general function from the specific implementations. The invoking program sends a message and relies on the object to select and execute the appropriate code. The justifications for using an intermediate layer essentially falls into two categories: encapsulation and distribution.

Meat Products of India Ltd (MPI) is a Public Sector undertaking of Government of Kerala. Established in the year 1973, the company holds a category A No.1 license from the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India for the manufacture and marketing of meat and meat products. MPI hold APEDA Registration No. 104009542 and EIA Registration No. 42056. The products of MPI are derived from young and healthy livestock and are processed by the help of sophisticated technology to ensure high standards of hygiene, longer storage time and more nutritive value. Products of MPI ranges from beef, buffalo, pork, mutton and poultry. The processed and semi-cooked products include corn beef, meat loaf, sausages, curries, bacon, ham, cutlet-mix, chicken-n-ham and salami. Sausages, one of the most popular of the MPI products range come in varieties such as cocktail sausage, pork sausage, chicken pepperoni sausage and masala sausage. In tune with the varied demands of the market, the above range of products are available in different weights and quantity in poly packing and cans. Meat Products of India Ltd. Is a Kerala Government owned company engaged in production and marketing of various meat and meat products derived from pork, beef, chicken and mutton. It is holding MFPO Licence No.1 under A. The products are manufactured under strict Veterinary Supervision from selected animals free from zoonotic disease.
