VARIOUS: Lookout! Records, 20 Year Collection

Larry Livermore and David Hayes formed the label in 1987. Hayes left in 1989 to start Very Small Records, leaving Lookout to Livermore, who sold the label in 1997 to Chris Appelgren, who started working at the label in 1988, while still in high school. From the start, Lookout released punk rock records, but over time expanded its scope to include various types of pop punk, hardcore punk, and indie rock. Former Lookout bands that have since achieved major label success include Green Day, Rancid and The Donnas.
Lookout became famous for releasing albums that featured a very distinctive pop punk sound including bands such as Screeching Weasel, The Mr T Experience, The Queers, Green Day, Sweet Baby, Squirtgun and others.
In recent years, a number of Lookout recording artists have ended their dealings with the label, rescinding their master rights from the label and re-issuing albums on other labels.
These bands have cited various reasons including non-renewal of licensing agreements, distribution and breach of contract over unpaid royalties. Among the bands that have taken their masters from Lookout and reissued them on other labels are Screeching Weasel (on Asian Man), Avail (on Jade Tree), Pansy Division (on Alternative Tentacles), Blatz and Filth (on Alternative Tentacles), The Dollyrots (on Blackheart Records), The Riverdales (on Asian Man), The Queers (on Asian Man), The Lillingtons (on Red Scare Industries), Enemy You (also on Red Scare), Twenty-Nineteen (on CREC Records), and The Groovie Ghoulies (on Springman Records). On August 1, 2005, Green Day became the biggest former Lookout act to rescind their masters from the label, forcing Lookout to lay off its staff and halt new releases for the remainder of the year. Operation Ivy rescinded their masters on May 4, 2006 and their album was reissued on Hellcat Records in November 2007.
On September 13, 2009 Larry Livermore commented on the name of the label on his blog, noting that the name is often erroneously spelled with an exclamation point. While the proper spelling does not include an exclamation point, an exclamation point has become a common spelling in popular usage.
Lookout Records turned 20 years old in 2008 and continues to offer a large catalog of underground punk, pop-punk and indie rock music on CD, vinyl and via digital download from virtually all music services.

THE ALARM: Eponymous ((1981-1983)) Remastered

With idealistic spirit, a powerhouse live show, and bigger than big hair, the Alarm were part of an early-'80s wave of bands (the Call, Big Country, and the Waterboys among them) who dealt in soaring anthems inspired by the righteous idealism of punk. Clearly influenced by the impassioned political fervor of the Clash, the Alarm also worked in a mostly acoustic, folk-punk vein that provided a counterpoint to their hard-driving guitar rockers. Their stage look was unquestionably a product of the '80s, with enormous spiked-up hair accompanying a cowboy/old-time cavalry wardrobe. Yet the numerous comparisons to U2 in the press were not unfounded; despite a more conservative sonic palette, the Alarm had much the same earnest intensity, the same messianic ambitions, even the same vague spirituality. Likewise, the Alarm seemed to covet a mainstream breakthrough in the vein of The Joshua Tree's conquest of the pop charts, and polished up their sound accordingly, with mixed creative results. The British music press habitually savaged their records as derivative and pretentious, but this meant little to their zealous following who supported the band to the tune of over 5 million sales worldwide and 16 Top 50 UK singles.

SPLODGENESSABOUNDS: [2000] I Don't Know [Captain Oi! Recs.]

Splodgenessabounds is an English punk rock band formed in Keston, Bromley, Kent. The band is associated with the Oi! and Punk Pathetique genres. Their frontman is Max Splodge. The band was originally fronted by Max Splodge and his girlfriend of the time, who was known as Baby Greensleeves. The band won a recording contract with Deram Records after finishing runner-up in the 1979 Battle Of The Bands contest, even though Deram was planning to cease all activities in the music markets outside of classical music. The band's first release for Deram in 1980 was "Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps Please", which later inspired the title of the BBC situation comedy, Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps. The song was released as a triple A side vinyl single, along with "Simon Templar" (a pastiche of the theme tune of the TV series, Return of the Saint) and "Michael Booth's Talking Bum".

THE INFAS: Sound and Fury ]]New Link!![[

First of all, yes this is Infa Riot and they just simply changed their name to The Infas (Why?), but anyways, this album has an interesting story. Infa Riot was a short lived band and their debut, Still Out of Order, was a huge sucess. However Secret Records (the orignial issue of that album was first issued from them) eventually vanished away (went out of business) and so the band had went on to the record label Panache Records and recorded Sound and Fury (under the name The Infas), but also recorded the ''Sound And Fury'' / ''Triffic Spiff Ya OK'' single but neither one of the records got promotions and distributions so this album was scarce (meaning it was rare and wasn't out for very long) and then the band broke up after this. Then a decade later, they reissued this album in it's original form (with no bonus tracks and including the LP Cover on front and back). The band during this time were a little slower but managed to stay the same, unlike a majority of punk bands that went from punk to being 80s rock and roll mixes punk bands. The vocalist sounds the same from their last album and the songs are really good. If you haven't listened to their first album, Still Out of Order (which when you look for it on this site, type in the name Infa-Riot), check that album out first before you make a decision on this album.

THE VIBRATORS: Live at CBGB's

The Vibrators were founded by Ian 'Knox' Carnochan, bassist Pat Collier, guitarist John Ellis, and drummer John 'Eddie' Edwards. They first came to public notice at the 100 Club when they backed Chris Spedding in 1976. On Spedding's recommendation, Mickie Most signed them to his label RAK Records. Most produced their first single, "We Vibrate". The band also backed Spedding on his single, "Pogo Dancing".
The Vibrators recorded sessions at for John Peel at BBC Radio 1 in October 1976, June 1977, and February 1978. They were one of the pioneering punk bands that played at London's Roxy Club. They headlined in January 1977, supported by The Drones, and in February they played twice at the venue. In March 1977 the band supported Iggy Pop on his British tour. Later that year they backed ex-Mott the Hoople frontman Ian Hunter.
The band signed to Epic Records in early 1977. Their debut album, Pure Mania which was co-produced with Robin Mayhew the sound engineer for David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust live shows, reached the Top 50 of the UK Albums Chart. The album is well regarded by some music critics, and 17 years after its release, The Guinness Encyclopedia of Popular Music named Pure Mania one of the 50 best punk albums of all-time.
Their follow-up album, V2, narrowly missed the UK Top 30. The only single to be taken from that album, "Automatic Lover", was the only Vibrators’ single to reach the UK Top 40. It earned the band a TV appearance on the prime-time TV show Top of the Pops. The Vibrators’ final single on Epic, "Judy Says (Knock You In The Head)", was released in June 1978. Years later it was included in mojo magazine’s list of the best punk rock singles of all time.
A lack of further chart activity, and with only one UK Top 40 single to their credit, sees the Vibrators join the list of one-hit wonders; a list that includes other UK punk and new wave acts such as The Banned, John Cooper Clarke, The Flying Lizards, Jilted John, 999, the Radio Stars, and the Rich Kids.
During the 1980s, John Ellis recorded and toured frequently with Peter Hammill, and subsequently The Stranglers, eventually joining the latter full-time in the 1990s. Pat Collier went on to work closely with The Soft Boys, producing their seminal album, Underwater Moonlight, and Robyn Hitchcock, producing and mixing some of his solo albums (to which Knox also sometimes contributed). Despite numerous line-up changes, The Vibrators are still touring to this date as a three-piece, Carnochan and "Eddie" being the only original members. Live Near The Seedy Mill Golf Course was released in the UK by Invisible Hands Music in 2003.

the VENDETTA: Ultraumatic

The Vendetta is an Italian band that formed in 2004. They started under the name The Bloodline, but changed that later into The Vendetta. They are an astonishingly busy band playing 150 to 180 live shows every year. The opener Fall And Rise, a fast but melodic street punk song, makes you feel that The Vendetta are feeling more at ease on stage than in a studio. This shouldn’t of course mean that Ultraumatic doesn’t have a decent sound, but the music is sounding as authentically as if it had been recorded live. The song structures are always kept at the most simple level and the sound is going from rock’n’roll to street punk and even sometimes hardcore. The Vendetta play chords that put the right amount of energy into their songs. That’s why they call their music speed rock. You may criticise that The Vendetta adhere too much to the same formula, but at least the first eleven songs are entertaining and powerfully produced. People who like Motörhead, Rose Tattoo and Misfits will get pleasure out of this record.

KILLERMETERS: Charge!

The Killermeters began as a punk rock band in 1977 when, like thousands of others across the country they swapped their clothes, modified their Rock/R'n'b sound and took a lot of speed. They were the best and most energetic band in the Yorkshire town of Huddersfield and played all the club and pub venues in the north. Influenced by doctor feelgood, the Killer Meters' (as they were known at that stage) main attraction was bass player Vic Szczesnowicz (his punk moniker was Vic Vomit). Their lead/rhythm guitarist was Mick Moore who worshiped Keith Richards. Another Rolling Stone obsessive was Killer Meters Vocalist Owen Ford and their line-up was completed by young Graham 'Jez' jessop on drums. A good live act, their sound was a little too derivative to make it as a punk band, although Vic and Mick clearly had talent and one or two of their songs shone out above the standard punk thrash.

GOB: Muertos Vivos

Gob is a Canadian punk rock band from Langley, British Columbia formed in 1994. The band's trademark sound relies heavily on distorted guitars. Their single "I Hear You Calling" was featured on Electronic Arts's NHL 2002 video game. Other songs that have been featured in EA video games are "I've Been Up These Steps" (NHL 2003), "Sick With You" (NHL 2003), "Oh! Ellin" (NHL 2004), and "Give Up the Grudge" (Madden NFL 2004). The band has appeared on several outdoor music festivals, the most well-known being the Vans Warped Tour. Most recently, the band has been noticed due to frontman Tom Thacker's involvement as a lead guitarist in Sum 41.

MATTHEW GOOD: Raygun [EP]

Matthew Frederick Robert Good (born June 29, 1971, Burnaby, British Columbia) is a Canadian rock musician. He was the lead singer for the Matthew Good Band, one of Canada's most successful alternative rock bands in the 1990s, before dissolving the band in 2002. Other band members included drummer Ian Browne, guitarist/keyboardist Dave Genn, and original bassist Geoff Lloyd, later replaced by Rich Priske. In the years since the Matthew Good Band's disbanding, Good has pursued a solo career and established himself as a political activist and blogger.

ANNALISE: Too Much Music and Too Many Bands [Single]

Annalise are a punk band from Exeter in the UK. We have released numerous 7''s and EPs as well as three albums. Our most recent album 'Heres to Hope' was released on No Idea Records. 999: [1992] Early Stuff (The UA Years)

A fantastic overview of some of the band's early material, 999 were often criminally slated for having a history. Indeed only the band's vocalist Nick Cash (Keith Lucas) had served time with Ian Drury in Kilburn & The High Roads.
A mixture of bubblegum/punk/glam and rock, the band were really popular on the live circuit. The Nick Cash & Guy Days partnership wrote practically all of the band's recorded output in the early years. Loud and brash, 999 released a number of singles which really should have seen them catapulted into the charts; 'I'm Alive', 'Emergency' and 'Nasty Nasty' have remained live favourites over the years. 'Me and My Desire' saw the band's direction changing and 'Feeling Alright With The Crew' was more a tribute to followers of the band, which still remains popular on the punk cabaret circuit. 'Homocide' was their highest chart entry but an appearance on Top of the Pops was halted because BBC technicians were on strike and the following week the single plunged down the charts, the impetus having gone.
The band spent a vast proportion of their time touring the states and the rest of the world whilst followers over here had to be content with one-off London shows.
For those who took themselves a little less serious than more politically motivated bands, 999's early material is well documented here and is well worth investigating.

PANSY DIVISION: [1995] Pile Up [Lookout]

Frustrated by the lack of openly gay musicians in the indie rock and punk scene, Jon Ginoli formed Pansy Division (the name itself a pun on Panzer Division and the word "pansy") in San Francisco in early 1991. The intent of the band was to defy the common stereotypes towards gay men, particularly that they were more or less limited to enjoying and/or performing disco and showtunes, and that rock was strictly heterosexual territory. Originally a solo act on guitar, Ginoli eventually recruited bassist Chris Freeman and drummer Jay Paget, forming the first openly all-gay rock band.
Pansy Division's sound was heavily influenced by 1960s pop and 1970s punk rock, most notably bands such as the Ramones, the Buzzcocks and early Beatles: short, catchy pop punk numbers with humorous, in-your-face lyrics that dealt with various aspects of both gay life and life in general. Most of their early repertoire featured explicit and near-pornographic (though firmly tongue-in-cheek) lyrical depictions of gay sex, though some songs focused on more universal, unisex topics such as loneliness, friendship and attraction.
In 1993, following extensive Californian touring, several 7" singles and compilation appearances, Pansy Division was signed to Lookout! Records, released their first album, Undressed, and embarked their first national tour.

PANSY DIVISION: [1994] Deflowered [Lookout]

Pansy Division is an American rock/punk band that formed in San Francisco, California in 1991. Featuring primarily gay musicians and focusing mostly on gay-related themes, Pansy Division is one of the more mainstream-oriented bands to emerge from the queercore movement that began in the 1980s. In 1994, with the release of their second album Deflowered and an appearance on Outpunk's seminal compilation Outpunk Dance Party, the band had proven themselves to be one of the more prolific and well-known artists to spring from the budding queercore movement. Also catching the wave of pop punk's mainstream explosion, Pansy Division were selected to tour with Green Day on the band’s Dookie tour, thus introducing the group and queercore to a much larger audience.
While signed to Lookout!, the band continued to release an album a year: 1995's Pile Up (notable for its various cover songs, including Ned Sublette's "Cowboys Are Frequently, Secretly Fond of Each Other" and Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (covered as "Smells Like Queer Spirit")), 1996's Wish I'd Taken Pictures (featuring the single "I Really Wanted You", whose music video played once on MTV) and the 1997 B-sides compilation More Lovin' From Our Oven.
Pansy Division also toured prolifically during these years, both nationally and internationally, touring with such alternative rock and punk bands as Chixdiggit, the Groovie Ghoulies, cub and Servotron, God Is My Co-Pilot and Team Dresch, while often sharing the stage with such bands as Rancid, The Vandals, New Bomb Turks, Jimmy Eat World, Supergrass and The Supersuckers.
During this time, Pansy Division primarily performed as a trio, with Freeman and Ginoli being the only constant members amid a slew of perpetually rotating drummers, both gay and straight. In 1996, the band finally found a permanent gay drummer in the form of Luis Illades and became a quartet in 1997 with the addition of lead guitarist Patrick Goodwin.

FAILURE: [1996] Fantastic Planet

Failure started in Los Angeles during 1990 when Greg Edwards answered an ad for a bassist placed by Ken Andrews and Robert Gauss, who were roommates at the time.
Failure's debut effort, Comfort, produced by Steve Albini, was very murky and highly influenced by the grunge scene of the early 90's. Following the release of Comfort, Robert Gauss left and Failure's core shifted to Andrews and Edwards, who would switch bass and guitar duties during recording. At this time Failure decided to take more creative control of their work and Andrews produced their sophomore release, Magnified.
Around the time Magnified was released, Kelli Scott would join the band on the drums while Andrews and Edwards began experimenting with heroin. Failure toured heavily with Tool in support of the release.
Fantastic Planet was recorded shortly after at a house in Los Angeles. This time around, Edwards began contributing to the lyrics and writing. Despite critical acclaim the album didn't sell well.
Failure recruited Troy Van Leeuwen to cover the extra guitar sounds they used on Fantastic Planet and the band toured to support the album, including two slots at Lollapalooza, one on the main stage and one on the second. Relations between Andrews and Edwards became strained due to Edwards' addiction to heroin and soon after Failure disbanded.

THE PROFESSIONALS: (80) The Professionals

After John Lydon formed Public Image Ltd., Sid Vicious died of an overdose and Steve Jones and Paul Cook went into hiding. In 1980 the latter pair reappeared as the Professionals with bassist Andy Allan. The album and its single, "Just Another Dream," were vilified in the English rock press. The East End Oi! movement had been born, and the Professionals went down the middle between the early sound of the Sex Pistols (without the anger) and the Cockney chants of the straps-and-braces Oi! boys. With post-punk and ska in full flower on the other side of the rockist divide, there was simply no room for a straight-up rock band, which is what the Professionals were. Their hair was too long, they wore no costumes, and they simply let it rip with workmanlike tunes crafted by Cook and Jones. Lots of big chords, muddy big beat drums, and chanted rather than sung vocals. The Virgin reissue of the album is straight with nothing extra. It doesn't even sound remastered, and that's somehow fitting. This is plodding, straight-ahead rock music that walked too many lines to establish itself with an identity of its own. THE PROFESSIONALS: (81) I Didn't See It Coming

Give guitarist Steve Jones and drummer Paul Cook credit: Instead of resting on their 1977-era laurels, they reasserted themselves on what wound up being their only joint post-Sex Pistols album (not counting production or sessions). Although Cook and Jones lacked the combustive charisma of Johnny Rotten or Sid Vicious, they made up for those shortcomings with plenty of musical firepower. Unfortunately, the public would wait nearly two years to find out, but this reissue of the long-delayed I Didn't See It Coming album makes a good case for its re-evaluation. Cook and Jones hadn't lost their ear for the well-turned anthem; the anti-cop "Little Boys," the music industry slam of "Payola," "Northern Slide," and "Kick Down the Doors" are among the tracks bearing repeated spins. &The Magnificent" opens matters with a sly send-up of Rotten's post-Pistols band, Public Image Limited, with the requisite scratchy guitar to match. The quieter moments work equally well, too: "Crescendo" is a punked-up power ballad, while "Friday Night Square" sketches a vivid snapshot of walking aimlessly around, checking out the sleazy nightlife. The band's approach is direct as its music. Jones upholds his reputation as punk's answer to Chuck Berry, while Cook's support is steady and unflinching. Former Subway Sect bassist Paul Meyers and guitarist Ray McVeigh lend quiet, unassuming support. The best news here are the eight bonus tracks of singles that preceded the album -- such as the rousing "&1-2-3-4," which became a live staple. Very good if you like new oi bands, which I guess the Briggs happen to fall under that category. They play even better live. I guess this cd is okay some good songs like "dead men" and "keep us alive"

U.K. SUBS: Riot [Cleopatra]  New Link!!

In honor of the U.K. Subs' 20th anniversary, Nicky Garratt returned to the fold for Riot and Quintessentials, which were recorded simultaneously at San Francisco's Wally Sound. And he brought along 1981-1983 bassist Alvin Gibbs (from the band's two best LPs, Diminished Responsibility and Endangered Species) for the ride. Garratt and Gibbs had returned once before -- but it was a false start -- on the OK but flawed and inconsistent 1988 LP Killing Time. This time the reunited trio get it right, using Samiam drummer Dave Ayer in place of Steve Roberts. Like Quintessentials, Riot approaches the meaty, huge-sounding production of the final two Garratt/Gibbs LPs. The mix may not be quite as big on either, but Riot's "House of Cards," "Cyberjunk," and especially the title track are brimming with all the qualities that made the Subs one of the leaders of U.K. punk's second wave, along with the post-Brian James Damned, Ruts, Undertones, Angelic Upstarts, and Stiff Little Fingers. Fifteen straight songs may smack you in the face, but as in the best of all "original spark" punk, the playing level is so escalated it belies the apparent simplicity of the written chords. Garratt's right hand chops at the strings with style as well as authority, spitting fire at all the key junctures, blasting into choruses such as "Guilty Man" out of power-riffs so nasty and glorious, you understand how 10,000 punk bands in his absence never came close to matching this! And with such a formidable band to back him at last, the always-committed Harper gains stature and probity for his gutsy stands, such as when he spits "where's the human rights?" DEADFALL: Mass Destruction [Six Weeks Recs.] NEW LINK!!

DEADFALL have quickly become one of the best hardcore punk bands in the Bay Area. Their insanely chaotic live shows match their penchant for writing classic punk ala early DC hardcore such as MINOR THREAT and GOVERNMENT ISSUE and adding the blazing fast thrash of Bostons JERRYS KIDS and GANG GREEN.  SPAZM 151: [2001] Spazm 151 [Busted Heads]

Here's the CD version of the LP that was released by Mind Control back in 2001, thanks to the kind folks at Busted Heads. And god damn, pretty much anything that comes from either Mind Control or Busted Heads is going to be a winner, and this scorcher is no different. These Texans blaze through 13 tracks of fucking classic hardcore/punk in barely over 20 minutes with tons of energy and a great multi vocal attack. The songs are the perfect blend of pissed off hardcore and punk rock as well, taking the attitude and slight catchiness of the latter and blending it with the pure aggression and speed of the former. There's even a thrashy crossover feel in a couple of the tracks. Plus there are some totally reckless lead breaks to boot. You can't lose! They even close out with two raging covers: "Build Me a Bomb" by Jerry's Kids and "I Hate Myself" by The Offenders. Oh yeah. For some reason there are only 10 actual tracks on the CD even though there are 13 songs (some tracks contain more than one song), so things can be hard to follow, but I guess it's not really a big dead in the end. The recording is perfect for what these guys are doing, too. It's not too clean, but it is just polished enough to refrain from sounding overly raw or anything like that. Everything sounds natural, the bass presence rips, the guitars have a nice sort of resonant distortion that brings the mid-80's to mind, and the dry vocal yells are right in with the music. Damn fine. The layout is all in black and white, and mainly text. The cover combines crazy illustrations with some weird collaged photographs and just looks bizarre. It's definitely got an early punk feel to it. There's a map of Texas with some skulls, insects, and other kooky shit. Weird. All of the inner pages are black with white text, and that's that (aside from some tiny band photos at the end). The lyrics are pissed as shit and totally straightforward, pulling no punches, be it regarding personal issues, political issues, or a mix of the two. "Everybody's always talking about how good it used to be, They've given up on life, They're living in mediocrity, So stop whining about the scene now or how the bands all fucking suck, If you wanna see some change then raise your voice and rise above!" Another great, no bullshit hardcore record from Busted Heads. They've got good taste, so check this one out. (8/10) (www.aversionline.com)

With a career lasting thirty-one years, vocalist/guitarist IAN "KNOX" CARNOCHAN, bassist PAT COLLIER, guitarist JOHN ELLIS and drummer EDDIE originally formed the VIBRATORS in February 1976, and their first gig was supporting THE STRANGLERS at Hornsey Art College in North London. They supported THE SEX PISTOLS at the 100 CLUB and were one of the bands playing at the now legendary 100 CLUB PUNK ROCK FESTIVAL, where as well as doing their own set they supported guitar hero CHRIS SPEDDING. CHRIS recommended the band to his then record company, RAK. The band's debut single "WE VIBRATE" came out in November (one of the first punk singles) and was followed two weeks later by CHRIS SPEDDING'S "POGO DANCING" single with the VIBRATORS as the band on that. THE ORPHANS: Raise The Youth

The Orphans formed in May 1995 in the Philly area...more specifically, in and around the area of West Chester, Pennsylvania. Really the story begins before then, on skateboards in driveways and parking lots while a beat-up tape player crackles and blares in the background. We played basement shows mostly... a few backyards and a whole slew of rentable halls with a lot of bands we became friends with. All in all it adds up to the greatest time of your life: pissed off, carefree, caffeinated and brimming with the relentless desire to get in front of a roomful of dirty, spiky kids around your age and just fucking scream til you can't scream no more. We stopped playing officially in 2000, but have played reunion shows time and again for one reason or another. RANCID & NOFX: [2002] BYO Splits Series Volume III

This 3rd Volume of the BYO Split Series features two of the most infamous punk bands in the world, RANCID and NOFX. The twist on this one is that each band has gone into the studio to record six of the other bands songs. Neither one revealed which songs they were going to do, so the mystery became even more of a reason to get more bold on song selelctions, and the outcome is amazing. The contrasting styles of both bands make the songs that much more interesting, and the self produced efforts bring forth all the energy and fury that punk rock is built on.
