MINUTEMEN: (1987) Ballot Result (320kbps)

The bands' roots can be traced back to 1971, when Boon and Watt met at age 13. Watt was walking through a park in their hometown of San Pedro, when Boon, playing army with other boys, fell out of a tree right next to him.[1] Both boys shared a passion for music and eventually started playing music together, albeit mostly cover songs. Boon's mother taught D. to play the guitar and suggested that Watt learn to play bass, even though, at the time, Watt did not even know exactly what a bass was. In the summer of 1973, Watt and Boon formed the Bright Orange Band with D's brother Joe on drums. 1976 would be a mixed blessing for the two; that year they discovered punk, however Boon's mother died and the Bright Orange Band disbanded shortly thereafter. The next year, the two joined a band called Starstruck, which had been started by their friend Marc Weiswasser who played drums. Neither of those bands played original songs. After Starstruck broke up, Boon and Watt met George Hurley and formed The Reactionaries with vocalist Martin Tamburovich. According to Watt, the name came from a Mao Tse-Tung quote about how all reactionaries are actually "paper tigers".

MINUTEMEN: (1982) What Makes a Man Start Fires? (320kbps)

This is a very scratchy and dark album by minutemen. Double nickels is everyone quoted favorite, but this is their best. Mersh is energetic and sweet, double nickels is them having fun. This is very dark, angry and jazz inflected, by far their most original. So short, so brilliant, so totally unique. Has anyone made music quite like this since? Many have tried. I saw minutemen in high school about 3 months before D Boon died, 1985. They opened up for REM, when REM were so incredible, but my memory is fuzzy of early high school, so many soon-to-be legendary shows every month.
How lucky that one of the early bands I was into, would turn out to be one of the best of all time. Kind of like enjoying the work of a few local painters that pretty much you and your friends are the only ones that even have heard of them, and later they turn out to be Monet and Renoir... Thaker

MINUTEMEN: (1990) Post Mersh Vol. 2 (320kbps)

Some of their best stuff is on here. "Buzz or Howl" tends towards abrasive, Pere Ubu-ish noise with guitar thrash backing. It's mostly pretty great and the band never sounded more muscular or tighter. And that's saying something. As on previous records, they are extremely intense and very ambitious.
"Project Mersh" (mersh is short for commercial) is less ambitious, points up for the funny cover though. They try to make a more conventional, acceptable rock sound on here. Mike Watt's songs remain too idiosynchractic and insular to really hit that mark, but Boon's "Cheerleaders" and "King of the Hill" stand with the band's best, and would have been heard at the time were there justice in the world.

IGNITE: (2004) Best Of 1994-2004 (320kbps)

Ignite is a hardcore/punk rock band from Orange County, California. Formed in 1993, their commercial breakthrough album came in May 30, 2000, on TVT Records, and was called A Place Called Home. Prior to this release they were well regarded among hardcore fans, thanks in part to constant touring, and having visited over 30 countries, including playing the Reading Festival in 2001.[citation needed] On July 20, 2005, a deal was announced with Abacus Recordings, a subsidiary label of Century Media; the band's album Our Darkest Days released on the label in May 2006.
Much of their music is socially and politically aware. TOXIC REASONS: (1995) No Peace in Our Time (320kbps)

Toxic Reasons are an American hardcore punk / punk rock band. They were formed in Dayton, Ohio in 1979. The founding members were Bruce Stuckey (bass guitar & vocals), Joel Agne (guitar & vocals), Ed Pittman (lead vocals), and Mark Patterson (drums). In 1980, Joel Agne left the band and was replaced by Greg Stout on bass, and Bruce Stuckey switched to lead guitar. In 1981, Mark Patterson left the band and was replaced by James J. Pearson (J.J.) on drums. Rob Lucjak ("Snott") also joined on rhythm guitar. They recorded their first LP (Independence) at Keystone Recording in Indianapolis, Indiana, then went on tour and moved to San Francisco, where their label Risky Records was located. David 'Tufty' Clough joined the band on bass guitar.
Ed Pittman left the group following the release of Independence. During this time the band created a logo showing the US, Canadian, and British flags joined together. The symbol not only represented their tri-national roots (JJ from Canada, Tufty and Rob from England, and Bruce from the US), but also came to symbolize the diversity of their sound, which mixed fast US hardcore with melodic Canadian guitar lines and British influences like reggae-punk plus more mid-tempo anthems. Toxic Reasons is still performing, and all current members live in Indianapolis. The Current line up is Bruce Stuckey-guitar and vocals/Kurt Harley- Guitar and vocals/JJ Pearson- drums and vocals/ Jason Pizzleman-bass and vocals. They have made over 40 recordings to date, including eight full length albums. >>> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toxic_Reasons

the HI-FIVES: (1997) And a Whole Lotta You! (320kbps)

Green Day introduced a new generation of punk rockers to the raucous joys of the early '60s Kinks, updating the groovy beats, massive choruses, and solid hooks of the British Invasion bands with a welcomed dose of adrenaline and a bit of '90s snarl. The Bay Area quartet the Hi-Fives goes a step further in the history lesson, completing the package with mod haircuts, three-button suits, vintage guitars and drums, and a second album featuring 16 irresistible tunes, only two of 'em over two minutes long (and those just barely). In the old-fashioned liner notes, the Fives proudly proclaim themselves "beat punks," acting as if they invented that term. It's questionable how deep their knowledge of the genre is-these guys are no obsessives like the Milkshakes or the Funseekers-and their choice of cover tunes betrays their age. (They tackle "Bad Connection" by Yazoo and offer a version of "Tainted Love" inspired not by the Standells, but by Soft Cell.) Nevertheless, their instincts are solid, and there isn't a single song on And A Whole Lotta You! that doesn't make you want to sing along, if not pogo in place. Tunesmiths John Denery and Chris Imlay don't have a lot to say-the songs are mostly teen takes on love, lust, and love lost-but they say it well. "You're not just like any other / You're better than a Chet Atkins album cover," they croon on the title track, backing up the sentiment with a frantic beat and a horny sax solo. And how can anyone argue with that? --Jim Derogatis

GROOVIE GHOULIES: Go Stories!

The Groovie Ghoulies will rock you like a hurricane. Hailing from Sacramento, California, they tour almost constantly. Kepi, Roach and Scampi are almost too cute for words, and could be easily dismissed if they didn't rock so hard. Their songs have a child-like quality that befits their cartoon namesakes, and yet lyrically, they are still able to take on concerns about more adult emotions. For example, in the song, "Are You Passionate", they warn that nothing is worth doing if you don't care deeply about it. "Are you passionate? Do you love what you do? Would you do it if they didn't pay you?"
But the gem on this collection of hits is "Til Death Do Us Party". It's a love song, for these troubled times. And yet, for all the fun and humor in the lyrics ("1, 2, 3, 5, No one here gets out alive! 6, 7, 9, 10, Reincarnate, do it again!"), the Ghoulies don't come off as snooty sarcastic punk rockers. The Ghoulies come across with the intense simplicity of early Ramones when punk was still fun, as opposed to hardcore. Kepi's vocal stylings will make you turn up the car stereo too loud and drive too fast. And the rollicking guitars and drums will just make you jump and down with glee. The Groovie Ghoulies have a huge catalog of songs, and while the songs on Go! Stories include some horror-themed tunes, listeners will find more monster-intensive material on "Monster Club."
My only complaint about this collection is that it doesn't have the brilliant Ghoulies tune, "The Beast with Five Hands." But really, pick up any Groovie Ghoulies cd, and you'll get it. You'll want them to take you to the imaginary punk-rock monster prom in your mind. What do you mean you don't have one? I've said too much...-Jenni Monster

GANG OF FOUR: Solid Gold / Another Day / Another Dollar

Gang of Four's second album is a far more jagged affair then their classic debut "Entertainment". Solid Gold is a much more bass and drum oriented record with Andy Gill's static slashing hoving above. Solid Gold has held up as my favorite GOF album. With the addition of "Another Day Another Dollar" this is a must have - To Hell with Poverty is a classic dance club track from the mid-eighties and the live version of "What we all want" with it's 'in the face' bass brought to the front of the mix are fantastic. Just for clarification, Solid Gold and Another Day were the combo released first (by Rollins), then the mix of SG and Hard which I thought a bit confusing as it skipped "Songs of the Free" which was GOF's third album and quite a strong release (dave allen left and formed Shriekback with Barry Andrews (ex of XTC) and Sara Lee (League of Gentlemen with Robert Fripp) took over the bass duties - J. the RUNAWAYS: (1987) The Best Of The Runaways

This CD is a nice overview of the Runaways, spanning four of their albums. Most of the selections feature Joan Jett as lead vocalist, which is not exactly representative of the band (Cherie Currie did most of the leads on their first two records), but that's forgivable since Jett is by far the most successful of the band in her career after the Runaways. Tracks 8-12 are from the album Waiting for the Night, my favorite Runaways album which was done after Currie had departed. That has never been released on CD, and it wasn't easy to find even when it was originally released in 1977, so this is your best chance to hear these songs. Cmon is from the even harder to find Live in Japan album, which has also never been released on CD (at least in the US).
The music is basically straight-up three chord rock, with some metal and punk influence. The Runaways are definately not a pop or "girlie" band, but if you like that sort of hard-driving rock, this should be right up your alley. Some of the songs talk explicitly about subjects like female sexual desire, all night parties, and life on the streets, so if that really bothers you, consider yourself warned. It was probably too much for 1976-1978 America to accept, which is one reason the Runaways never got any acceptance by music critics of the time. Joan Jett herself said in an early 1980's interview that the Runaways were "too honest", and I think that's a fair assessment. The influence the band had on subsequent generations of female rockers is pretty well accepted now.
There isn't really a weak track on this CD, but I like some tracks better than others. Cherry Bomb is the Runaways signature song; I Love Playin' With Fire, You Drive Me Wild, and Wait For Me round out the top four. Listening to this brings me back to my teenage years, when the Runaways were playing constantly on my record player. They still sound just as good today! Steven

the SWINGIN' NECKBREAKERS: (2000) The Return Of Rock

after a 2 1/2 year silence, (actually they make a lot of noise on tour), the boys from Jersey are back and louder than ever. The Neckbreakers have always tried and often succeeded in filling the gap left by the Sonics. Here they return to good ol' fashioned rock and roll, turn up the amps, kick it up and annoy the neighbors. In this age of prepackaged boy bands, and former mouseketeer with electronically enhanced vocals, it is good to know that someone is carrying the banner of musicians who actually PLAY their own instruments. FLUX OF PINK INDIANS: (2000) Live Statement

In December 1979 after The Epileptics lost their drummer, Colin Latter and Derek Birkett found a replacement and continued gigging. They soon decided that with a new sound and a new set they should change their name. Colin had become interested in North American Indian culture and suggested Tribe Of Pink Indians, before settling on Flux Of Pink Indians in August 1980. Demos were recorded and the band played Stonehenge when the infamous 'biker's riot' occurred (during which Colin got bottled). Spring 1981 saw the release of the legendary 'Neu Smell' EP on the Crass label which reached No. 2 in the indie charts and sold 40,000 copies. Flux were now an integral part of the Anarcho-Punk scene and were receiving the attention of the secret service who camped outside their house, taped their phone calls and followed the band around. 1982 saw the release of the ground breaking 'Strive' album which sold 20,000 copies despite refusal of the band to promote it. No promotional copies were sent to the press or radio and no advertising was permitted. Flux decided a far more experimental path should be taken (the idea being that by making the music un-listenable people would concentrate on the lyrics) with 'The Fucking Cunts Treat Us Like Pricks' which was banned by HMV and seized from one shop by the police. The subsequent release 'Taking A Liberty' sold only 5,000. After releasing the more rhythm and dance orientated album 'The Uncarved Block' in 1986 on their own One Little Indian label the band expanded to a 15 piece, toured and decided to call it a day.

This is perhaps the best CD collection by the Vibrators in that they re-recorded some of their best-known numbers & many are better than the originals. THE VIBRATORS: Unpunked

THE VIBRATORS: Unpunked

Formed in February 1976 by vocalist/guitarist Knox, bassist Pat Collier and guitarist John Ellis their first gig was supporting The Stranglers at Hornsey Art College. They supported The Sex Pistols at the 100 Club and were one of the bands to play the now legendary 100 Punk Festival, where as well as doing their own set they supported guitar hero Chris Spedding. Chris recommended the band to his record company, Rak. The band's debut single 'We Vibrate' came out in November 1976 and was one of the first punk singles.
The Vibrators made their debut on Epic with the classic 'Baby Baby' which was followed by the album 'Pure Mania' which peaked at 49 in the charts. A second single was released from the album 'London Girls' and the band toured supporting Ian Hunter. Pat Collier left and was replaced by Gary Tibbs. The bands next release in March 1978 'Automatic Lover' reached 35 in the charts and earned the band a Top Of The Pops appearance. A second album 'V2'was released in April and reached 33 in the charts and is still regarded as one of New Wave's finest moments. Other line-up changes occurred but the singles continued 'Judy Says', 'Gimme Some Lovin', 'Disco In Moscow', 'Baby Baby' (re-recorded), 'MX America', 'Flying Home', 'Baby Blue Eyes' and 'Blown Away By Love'. Many albums were released including 'Guilty', 'Alaska 127', 'Recharged', 'Meltdown' and 1997's 'French Lessons With Correction' as well as numerous reissues. Expect more new product and reissues shortly.

THE DAMNED: Skip Off the School to See The Damned (The Stiff Singles A's & B's)

Since the Damned did most of their best work at Stiff Records, the appearance of a comprehensive collection like Skip Off School to See the Damned (The Stiff Singles A's & B's) is long overdue. It only contains 11 songs, several of which are on the seminal Damned, Damned, Damned, but almost all of them are dynamite, capturing the band are their rawest and catchiest. It's an ideal choice for casual fans who want to dig a little deeper than the debut but don't want to sort through their uneven follow-ups. For collectors, it's nice to have these all in one place, especially since the liner notes feature the fronts and backs of the original picture sleeves. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

RANCID: (1998) Life Won't Wait

Life Won't Wait bursts with a thrilling ambition. On Rancid's past albums, these Clash-via-Cali punks came on with an invigorating twin guitar attack that sounded like it wanted to take over the world--to set it free!--and their fourth release continues in this radical vein, insisting that "all people must rise and decide your fate." But there's newfound ambition in the music, too, as the band's raging attack is supplemented now by new sounds (rocksteady and rockabilly, even doo-wop and soul), new musical textures (the exhilarating "Crane Fist" features a piano battling a B3 organ), and new sources of inspiration, as the boys shout out for Salvadoran immigrants and brag like rappers in anthem after anthem of urgent, beautiful poetry. --David Cantwell

PARASITES: It's Alive

How do you cover a double LP onto a single LP? The Parasites elegantly solved the problem by covering the Japanese 20-track version of the seminal Ramones live album. I still don't get why bands have to cover complete Ramones LPs, but if it has to be done, this is a cool way to do it. The only annoying thing is the constant audience noise that has been mixed in. 1700 made, some on white vinyl. + repro of the Japanese lyric sheet. Parasites are an American pop-punk band originally formed in 1985 by guitarist and singer Dave Parasite (a.k.a. Nikki Parasite) and bassist Ron Nole, formerly of the locally-known band, The Accelerators, in New Jersey. Dave later relocated to Berkeley, California, forming a new band with local players. The Parasites have had many personnel changes, with the most notable members being drummer Dan Cofer and his brother Scott Cofer, both formerly of the thrash-metal band Pillage Sunday. The band has been releasing records since 1987. After breaking up in 1998 and again 2003, the band released a Best Of compilation in 2006, entitled Retro-Pop Remasters (Best Of) on Go Kart Records. A new lineup of the band is currently touring and will be releasing an album of new material in 2007.

DAILY TERROR: Aufrecht

ICONS OF FILTH: (2002) Nostradamnedus

'Icons of Filth' started life as Mock Death in Cardiff in 1979 with Aitch on drums, Daffy on guitar, Socket on bass and Fran and Tina sharing vocal duties. After several gigs in the local area, Mock Death called it a day after 1 year.
'Atomic Filth' formed shortly afterwards with Socket, Daffy and Aitch from Mock Death and Stig Andrew Sewell on vocals. Within a year the name had been changed to Icons of Filth and Socket had left to be replaced on bass by Ed. After gigging extensively, the cassette LP "Not On Her Majesties Service" is recorded in October 1982 becoming the 1st release on Conflict's Mortarhate label, this 1st release showcases Stigs intelligent and thought-provoking lyrics which are lined up as a full-frontal attack on those in positions of authority. This is followed up by the May 1983 recording "Used, Abused and Unamused" which was released on Corpus Christi Records. Ed leaves after this to be replaced by Fish on bass. In December 1983, Onward Christian Soldiers was recorded and released on Mortarhate records. This LP featured a strong animal rights theme. After extensively gigging during 1984, usually with Conflict, the "Brain Death" EP was recorded in Oct 1984. This was followed in April 1985 by the "Filth & the Fury" EP. Not long after this the different members drifted apart due to family and job commitments.

ANTI-PASTI: No Government - The Best Of @ 320kbps

Though technically a 2nd/3rd wave punk band, releasing material mostly from 80-83 at a time when most of their peers and tour-mates were either thrash-punk hacks (like The Exploited or GBH) or skinhead Oi bands, Anti-Pasti remained convincingly "old-school" in their approach. Their songs sounded like they were straight out of '77, not too fast, not too hard, just good uptempo British punk rock. This compilation culls many of their finer moments and is a satisfactory 1-disc overview of their career, though bigger fans might want to shell out the dough for both of Anti-Pasti's original albums (both recently re-released by Anagram with bonus tracks). And if this sort of latter-day punk rock is your bag, be sure to pick up Chron-Gen's single disc collection, as it has many of the same qualities as Anti-Pasti.

THE BRUISERS: Molotov (EP) @ 320kbps

The year was 1988 and vocalist Al Barr and Scotty Davies, the bands first bass player started what would become one of Americas longest running and most widely known Street Punk bands. Over the years the band has released a ton of records, E.P.'s and albums and have had too many line up changes to mention. In 1997 the band teamed up with Cyclone Records and released the very succesful "Molotov" CD. With this disc The Bruisers were back on the map once again as they recaptured the energy, style, and spirit found on their earlier material. The band decided to have Cyclone re-issue their past material in the form of the "Anything You Want...." Retrospective CD. This disc re-introduced the bands out of print back catalog to a ton of new Punk fans. This collection was released in March 1998 and then in July 1998, a full decade after they started playing, The Bruisers decided to call it quits as a band and front man Al Barr joined Dropkick Murphys.

TSOL: Change Today @ 320kbps

I bought this album in the 1980s, and it rarely left my turntable. Joe Wood has a great voice (kind of a cross between Morrison and Idol with a little more bluesy feel - matter of fact, while setting up in a small club in Fullerton, Joe played a solo version of The End and that was a treat). Ron Emory has always had a unique guitar sound, and that continues here. Mitch Dean hits the skins with emotion, and Mike Roche plays killer bass lines. The album has some dark tunes and mixes in some politics about conforming and impact of war (American Zone). In Time is reminiscent of the older TSOL because Ron sings it, and it is faster than the other songs. He does at least one song on each album. The add on tunes are add ons - they are cool to have, but like another reviewer said they did not really fit with the album. Who's complaining? I did hear these add on songs live in LA and OC clubs in the early to mid 1980s, and I liked them much better live. They had this other live song that would have been interesting to hear recorded about the homeless in LA - it was a reggae song. Pretty cool. (Eric DiBella)

THE LURKERS: Fulham Fallout @ 320kbps

The Lurkers were a late 1970s English punk rock group from West London, notable for being the first group ever on Beggars Banquet Records. Unlike most of their UK contemporaries, The Lurkers' influence lay far more with American punks The Ramones, than with British trailblazers The Sex Pistols and The Clash. Their heavily, and unabashedly derivative style, garnered them the affectionate tag of "The British Ramones". Their debut single, 1977's "Shadow"/"Love Story," was the first release on Beggars Banquet Records; their biggest hit was 1978's "Ain't Got a Clue"/"Ooh, Ooh I Love You," reaching No. 45 on the UK singles chart . Their first two LP's were 1978's Fulham Fallout and 1979's God's Lonely Men, and they issued several more singles on Beggars Banquet, such as "Heroin It's All Over" in 1982, but by the close of the decade, punk rock had fallen out of fashion, and The Lurkers' straightforward take on the genre was not equipped to evolve. Owing to a lack of commercial success and the shifting musical climate, Beggars Banquet dropped The Lurkers, precipitating their break-up.
In the years since, they have reunited with various personnel numerous times, and continue to record and perform to this day. Their legacy, however, is primarily founded on their late '70s output. "Shadow" and "Ain't Got a Clue" in particular are cited by punk cognoscenti as classic examples of the style, and still show up from time to time on genre overview compilations.

THE LURKERS: God's Lonely Man @ 320kbps

They were once called the British Ramones. Eh, maybe a bit of an over-statement, however you can see where that anonomous critic's thoughts were. Yes, they are late '70's punk-rock, not hardcore, that sing about very important issues. Not politics, silly! Girls! And other things. They are more poppy than some of their contemporaris, but don't let that fool you into thinking they aren't LOUD. They play their instuments with a vengence. Strangely enough, the worst song is the title track, which has more of a metal twinge than all-out punk. But don't worry; the rest of the songs are pure 70's pop-punk. Now, you may be wondering, "Why aren't these guys as famous as some others? Like, The BUzzcocks, or even The Vibrators?" Well, they're not exactly ground-breaking. Their sound is familiar; "Take Me Back To Babylon" is reminecent of The Damned tune "Stab Your Back". But they're still good. "Cyanide" is a blistering tune, and the Bonus Tracks on this CD "Suzie Is A Floozie", "New Guitar In Town", and especially the incredibly awesome "Little Ole Wine Drinker Me", which sounds like an early rock 'n' roll song given the punk treatment. So, if you like old-school punk-rock, definately check these guys out. You can impress people with your obscure music knowledge.

PETER & THE TEST TUBE BABIES: (1990) The $hit Factory

Make no mistake! Peter And The Test Tube babies have written some of the best punk songs ever. In the early '80s they stood out, above all other bands to emerge, with their tales of the hazards of being young punks in Brighton - "Banned From The Pubs", "Intensive care", "Run Like hell", the list goes on...all had the Test Tubes hallmark, combining personal experiences, real cool tunes and, most important of all, maintaining a great sense of humour.
At the time, their gigs were fun filled events with electrifying tunes and plenty of entertainment. Harmless humour of those early gigs was captured on their debut album, "Pissed And Proud". From those early gems, the Test Tubes just got better and better. The next crop of songs, "Jinx", "Blown Out Again" and "September" all featured on "The Mating Sounds Of South American Frogs", which stayed at number one for four months at the top of the independent charts. A US tour followed, climaxing with a 4,000 capacity sell out show at the Los Angeles Olympic Auditorium.
The Test Tubes first US domestic release, "Soberphobia", is probably one of their finest moments. The use of keyboards and sax on some tracks may not have been what people expected but it worked a treat. The much sought after CDs "Cringe" and "The $Hit Factory" again proved the Test Tubes unpredictability in the early '90s.

X: (2001) Under the Big Black Sun

By the time the title track's triumphant riff chime-growls out midway through Under the Big Black Sun, the listener has already been through the most wrenching sequence of X songs yet assembled. After the thumping bike-club anthem "The Hungry Wolf" opens this 1982 major-label debut, its tough-ass romanticism is quickly plowed under by memories of a motel bed "with rubber sheets" and two heartrending songs about Exene Cervenka's sister Mirielle, who'd been killed in a car crash. In fact, even without "Blue Spark," this would easily qualify as the group's most indigo record yet; the second half offers a lovingly surf-music-tinged remake of an old Tin Pan Alley tune, "Dancing with Tears in My Eyes" and "The Have Nots," whose alcohol-soaked social comment clings so fiercely to mournfulness that hardly a wisp of punk anger can take hold. Rootsier than X's previous albums, Sun updates noirish dread with guitar wisdom. This remaster includes five bonus tracks, including the original mix of their Jerry Lee Lewis cover "Breathless." --Rickey Wright

X: (2001) Wild Gift

Though a small handful of its 13 songs predate Los Angeles, X's second album represents a giant leap forward for the band. Wild Gift stands as one of the 1980s' most fully realized rock & roll LPs. John Doe and Exene Cervenka bring altogether more personal and biting lyrics to the mic, making for riveting, curiosity-promoting performances. ("If I wrote a song like 'White Girl,'" Doe tells critic Kristine McKenna in this remaster's liner notes, "there was an unspoken pact that this may happen, but I love you more.") From the metallic riff of "It's Who You Know" to the surf-wise lines of "In This House That I Call Home," guitarist Billy Zoom is given freer rein, while drummer D.J. Bonebrake fuses the Ramones and Beefheart to enduring effect on "We're Desperate" (improved from an early single version by a slight lyric change). And "Back 2 the Base" and "Year 1" stand out as two of the most complex statements about punk's icon-smashing impulses ever. The 45-rpm take of "We're Desperate" is included here, along with six other bonus tracks. Shut up and smoke. --Rickey Wright
