7 SECONDS: Skins, Brains and Guts (1982)

Formed in the early '80s, the hardcore punk band 7 Seconds has been among the longest lived of any group from the first wave of Cali punk (forming in Reno, NV, and eventually relocating to Sacramento), though frontman Kevin Seconds has proved to be the only consistent member; changes during the mid-'80s moved guitarist Bobby Adams, drummer Troy Mowat, and bassist Steve Youth (Seconds' brother) into the lineup. The group released several 7" singles just after forming, and Seconds signed the band to the Better Youth Organization label by 1982. The three LPs released on BYO culminated in 7 Seconds' most authoritative album, Walk Together, Rock Together. Signed to Restless in the late '80s, 7 Seconds delivered Soulforce Revolution and Ourselves before moving again, to Headhunter. The band released three albums for Headhunter, but signed with their first major label, Epic, in 1995. The Music, the Message was 7 Seconds' first Epic LP, released in 1995. By 1999's Good to Go, however, the band was back on the indie front, now releasing material through the Side 1 label. In mid-2000, they released Scream Real Loud, followed five years later by their 13th LP, Take It Back, Take It On, Take It Over! Throughout the group's career, Seconds has maintained several side projects, including Drop Acid, Five Feet Ten Inches, and Mustard. He also released several solo efforts starting in the '90s, including a 2002 split acoustic album on Asian Man alongside Alkaline Trio's Matt Skiba.by John Bush

BANNER OF THUGS: This is Where it Starts (Demo)

It was the summer of 1999 when Merijn, Joost en Joris decided it was time to join their forces and start a band in which they could fully express their love for the punk rock, OI! and hardcore music. At that time Merijn sang in the $400 Suits and Joost and Joris did the vocals for the 046 hardcore band Segregate. But the three of them all felt something was missing and decided to cry out this feeling in the rehearsal room. Joris picked up his guitar and Merijn and Joost their mic’s. They asked their good friend and Joris´ younger brother Daan to do the drums and found their good friend Ivo willing to do the bass. A new band was born: Banner of Thugs.
Inspired by a wide range of bands they started to write some very basic OI! songs and recorded their first demo ´This is where it starts´ in the spring of 2000. Despite the lousy sound, the demo received some good critics and the band got the chance to do a number of shows with the likes of Discipline, Evil Conduct, Aggro-Culture, Hardsell and other OI! and street punk legends. Their live shows not only attracted OI! and Street punk lovers, but also people who were into Old school hardcore, Ska or even (heavy) metal. Since they didn’t necessarily felt they had to stick to playing basic OI! music and all of them were crazy about hardcore and many other kinds of music too, their songs got a little hardcore touch and were combined with some rock 'n roll and metal influences.

JERRY's KIDS : This is Boston is not L.A. (First Demo - 82)

Boston hardcore/thrash metallists Jerry's Kids (named after a long-running fund-raising organization that comedian Jerry Lewis formed for children with cerebral palsy) formed originally in 1981, rising out of a local scene that included such bands as SS Decontrol, the F.U.'s, Freeze, Negative FX, and Gang Green (the latter of which would often swap members with Jerry's Kids off and on). Jerry's Kids caught their first break in 1982, when they were featured on a compilation of local talent (This Is Boston, Not L.A.), which created a buzz for the band beyond just Boston. 1983 saw the release of their debut album for X-Claim Records, Is This My World. The group spilt from the label shortly thereafter, leading to the album being shortly out of print, before the Taang! label reissued it. 1989 saw the release of their second and final release, Kill Kill Kill, before splitting up. Although there were plenty of switches in the Jerry's Kids lineup, the best-known included members Rick Jones on vocals and bass, Rockin' Bob Cenci on lead guitar, Dave Aronson on rhythm guitar, and Jack Clark on drums. BLITZ : The Killing Dream (1995)

Oi! band Blitz helped to successfully launch No Future Records with its first EP, All Out Attack. Fans snapped up all 1,000 copies of the first run in short order. During the summer of 1981, indie charts in the U.K. saw the release rise to the number three spot. Sales of the four-track EP, which was the first release by the new label, eventually totaled more than 20,000 copies. "Never Surrender," a single that followed the debut's release, climbed to the number two spot on the U.K.'s indie charts. It took the place of "Time Bomb," a single that Blitz's members had wanted to put out until the label nixed that idea. The group followed up with "Warriors," which was backed by "Youth." Critics and fans compared the single to efforts by the 4-Skins and the Business, and it, too, performed very well on the indie charts. For the second time in a row, Blitz hooked the number two spot. The group then made it onto the national charts with Voice of a Generation, its first album. It held steady on the charts at number 27 despite the fact that there was little to no promotional campaign from the label to back it up and grab some exposure. Still, members of Blitz did well for themselves. They embarked on a tour of the U.K. alongside Abrasive Wheels and G.B.H., but unfortunately the lineup failed to adequately fill the sizeable concert venues that were scheduled. Disappointment led to some rocky times. Mackie was the first to drop out of the band, followed by Nidge, and then Charlie. Mackie and Nidge teamed up as Rose of Victory to record another No Future EP, while Tim and Carl tried to keep Blitz going with a new lineup. They put out New Age, repeating the band's earlier indie chart successes when the release rose to number two. Telecommunication followed, but by then fans were becoming critical of what they perceived as a change in the group's sound. The new Blitz tried to persevere with the release of Second Empire Justice. Nidge, along with Attak's Gary Basset, tried to keep things going in the late '80s with The Killing Dream, an album put out by Skunx Records. Before things fell apart for good, Nidge brought two other musicians into the band and embarked on a European tour.

the OPPRESSED: More Noize for The Boys (1998)

March 1981, Russel (DUCKY) Payne is released from Borstal and I get released from Prison. At the time we didn't know each other and it's just coincidence that we were both banged up for violence. Anyway, Ducky (GUITAR), his brother Ronnie (BASS) and Gary Tier (DRUMS), all Cardiff Skins, along with Martin Brennan (VOCALS) a valley Skin, form an Oi! band.
After tossing a few names around, including FORCED OPPRESSION, they decide that THE OPPRESSED fits the bill. So it was that with not much ability and a ton of enthusiasm the boys set out to have a ball.
While all this was going on I was forming INSANITY SQUAD with me on guitar, my brother Dom on bass, his mate Vince King on vocals, and a nutter called Ed Flemming on drums. Me and Vince was Skins and Dom and Ed was Punks so that made us Cardiffs first Skunk band. We played a few local gigs, recorded nothing and fell apart after trying play a gig so pissed we couldn't see straight.
Back at Duckys house Ronnie had left the band. No big story, he just wasn't into it. Looking for a new bass player they ask my mate, Paddy (SUEDEHEAD) Murphy if he wanted to join. Suede couldn't play a triangle so he suggested me. Me and him had seen their first gig and I remember telling Jayne ( ' ER INDOORS ) how "I should be in that band".
So Ducky, Gary and Brennan eventually turn up on my doorstep and make me an offer I couldn't refuse. I suggested Dom on Bass with me as second Guitarist and the boys were all happy. This was around Xmas 1981 and this line up lasted about a year. Brennan and Gary had decided to leave so I took over vocals and we found the Kid, Lee Jenkins, to take care of drumming. Lee was from Risca, about 20 miles out of Cardiff, a 16 year old Skin who told me "I'm fucking brilliant" when I asked him if he was any good, and "course I have, that's why I'm fucking brilliant" to "got a kit?" This line up lasted about 2 years and recorded nearly everything issued in the eighties.
Almost all our gigs ended in a ruck (boys will be boys) and eventually we just got pissed off with whole thing. We did get together in the studio with Juan Garcia, a punk from near Cardiff on drums. We recorded 3 cover versions but played no gigs. So that was it for the eighties. Less than 4 years but it seemed like a lifetime......

THE STRANGLERS: Suite XVI (2006)

Among their brethren in the first graduating class of British punk, the Stranglers are one band who seem admirably uninterested in spiky-haired nostalgia. Rather than simply mining their past, the Stranglers continue to write and record fresh material in their trademark style, and 2006's Suite XVI (their 16th studio album, natch) features a full three-quarters of the lineup that recorded Rattus Norvegicus back in 1977 (even the "new guy," guitarist Baz Warne, had close to five years under his belt with the Stranglers by the time this disc hit the shops). Following the muscular-but-hooky pattern of the group's mid- to late-'80s commercial high point rather than the sinister lurch of their earliest stuff, Suite XVI is plenty lively and generates a good head of aggressive steam on most cuts, especially the bitter "Summat Outanowt" and the passionate opener "Unbroken." However, while the Stranglers are to be congratulated for keeping their muse alive and functioning, that doesn't change the fact Suite XVI sound annoyingly pro forma; while the band sounds as skillful as ever (especially Jean Jacques Burnel's thick bass and Jet Black's powerful drumming), they haven't learned a whole lot of new melodic tricks over the course of three decades, and Dave Greenfield still sounds like he wishes he was Ray Manzarek without getting any closer to reaching that goal. And the tunes feel like variations on a theme the Stranglers have been slowly wearing into the ground since the day they started; Suite XVI is the work of a band who still have the focus and wherewithal to continue what they started, but left their best ideas behind them years ago, and for all the craft on display, these guys are just going in circles as they run out of gas. by Mark Deming

Don't lose my first punk radio show... Thursday, 01, February at 9 pm

THE ROOTS OF PUNK ROCK, in 1977 the dictionary defined punk as many things, but none of them were anything to do with a musical movement. All the definitions were uncompromisingly negative. This absence of acknowledgement at the peak of punk is indicative of its place in contemporary Britain. It was never a comfortable movement; it was not understood by most people over 21; it refused to conform, or to confine itself to a musical trend. No wonder the dictionary tried to ignore it.... When ?? (02-01) TUESDAY NIGHT at 9 pm (Brazilian Time)...

Stiv Bators: Disconnected

Steven John Bator, known as Stiv Bators (October 22, 1949 - June 3, 1990), was an American rock and roll and punk rock vocalist and guitarist from Youngstown, Ohio. He is best remembered for his bands, The Dead Boys and The Lords of the New Church.
In the course of his career, Bators was involved with a variety of bands, including Rocket From The Tombs, Frankenstein, The Wanderers and The Whores of Babylon (with Dee Dee Ramone and Johnny Thunders). He recorded as a solo artist with Bomp! Records.
It was as the lead singer and driving force of the Dead Boys, however, that Bators pioneered the punk rock sound, look and attitude. In 1977, Bators and the Dead Boys were featured in the independent punk rock film Crash 'n' Burn by Ross McLaren. Around the same time, the band became a popular staple at CBGB's, the now-legendary music club in New York City's East Village.
Later, the punk vocalist gained additional exposure through film. In 1981, Bators co-starred in the satirical John Waters film, Polyester. Seven years later, Bators made a memorable cameo appearance as "Dick Slammer", lead singer of "The Blender Children", in the offbeat comedy, Tapeheads, starring John Cusack and Tim Robbins.
In the 1980s Bators became romantically involved with model and singer Bebe Buell, mother of then infant Liv Tyler, and temporarily set up home with the pair in Bangor, Maine. He subsequently moved to England and established The Wanderers, whose core members were originally with the band, Sham 69.
Bators remained an expatriate for the duration of his life. He married an English woman, divorced her, and relocated to Paris. There he remained until his untimely death. In 1990, a reportedly intoxicated Bators was struck by a vehicle on a street in Paris. He was brought to a hospital but was reportedly sent home by the attending physician. Reports indicate that he died in his sleep as the result of a concussion. Unsubstantiated rumors suggest that Bators, a fan of rock legend Jim Morrison, had earlier requested that his ashes be spread over Morrison's Paris grave. from WIKIPEDIA

VA : American Youth Report (1991)

This CD was awesome! The music is great, and all of the songs are cool. I would reccomend it for anyone who likes punk! The variety of songs is great, I haven't listened to another punk CD for a while! I've been listening to it over and over again! Ashlee (Wenatchee, WA)

I thought for sure the MINUTEMEN were on this. Maybe on the vinyl LP and not this CD? I'm confused. (I'm no longer cornfused, they're there, they're there! on the CD, yeah baby, and a good song too, tho, it's the opposite of an oxymoron. That is, there's really no such thing as a MINUTEMEN song that isn't good, question only is, is it a great one or just a really good one. Ah, such pleasurable questions to ponder). Meanwhile, there were a bunch of really classic punk/HC/thrash comps back in the day (all great, these are not ranked). Punk rock comps were a way to get the music into the hands of punx world wide in a bunch, instead of doing a 7" or an LP. Remember, there was no Internet so there was no filesharing or MP3. If you stumble on any one of these comps, take my word for it, you'll be happy owning it, assuming yer into punk/hc/thrash (there's no metal in any of this or rap or rock or post punk and I believe every comp listed here is from the 80's, mostly the early to mid 80's). The Generators : From Rust to Ruin (2003)

The Generators are a punk rock band, formed in Los Angeles in 1997 by members of the defunct Warner Bros. artist, Schleprock. What started out as a side project, ended up becoming a rhythmic monster with 6 full-length releases under their belt along with numerous European & North American tours. In the late nineties the 4th wave of Punk had evolved, “Street Punk”. The Generators became one of the leading forces in this new movement in SoCal and have often been credited to kick starting this new punk scene in Los Angeles.
From Rust To Ruin collects the best of the GENERATORS more obscure, pre-TKO Records material. For the many fans that were introduced to the GENERATORS through the release of Tyranny, their 2001 TKO full length, From Rust To Ruin will be the first time they will get a chance to hear these great songs. Spanning 1997-2000 and drawing from the GENERATORS' out-of-print first two albums, singles, compilation tracks and non-U.S. releases, this 14-track CD will be a must for anyone looking to catch up on the history of this great and influential L.A. Street Punk band.

Angelic Upstarts : Live in Yuogoslavia (1985)

Formed in South Shields, England in 1977, the Angelic Upstarts was one of the period's most politically-charged and thought-provoking groups; though technically a skinhead band, their records attacked the racism and fascism so prevalent throughout the skinhead community, and while also technically a punk unit, their music quickly evolved beyond the movement's limited scope. The Angelic Upstarts were led by the rather nasal vocalist Mensi (born Thomas Mensforth), whose impoverished childhood became a frequent lyrical touchstone; along with a highly-fluid line-up which initially comprised guitarist Mond, bassist Ronnie Wooden and drummer Sticks, the group debuted with the 1979 single "Murder of Liddle Towers," a scabrous attack on police brutality. The record caught the attention of Sham 69's Jimmy Pursey, who produced their debut album Teenage Warning, which, like its 1980 follow-up We Gotta Get Outta This Place, roundly ridiculed the oppressive policies of Margaret Thatcher while offering an outpouring of sympathy for the working class.
As the Upstarts' popularity surged, so did the levels of violence at their live shows; they became mortal enemies of National Front fascist supporters, who railed against the band after first misinterpreting their leftist songs as supportive of their cause. At the same time, the band's music was becoming more complex and accomplished; by 1983's Reason Why?, the strongest Angelic Upstarts record, Mensi's songwriting skills had become tighter and more melodic, even branching out into reggae and folk, while the group's base broadened with the addition of keyboards and saxophones.
After issuing the inflammatory single "Brighton Bomb," a celebration of the IRA's attempt to assassinate the Conservative cabinet, the band released the LP The Power of the Press; lackluster sales triggered their break-up not long after. In 1988, the Angelic Upstarts briefly reformed; in 1992, they reunited again, this time long enough to cut an album, Bombed Out. Mensi subsequently arose as a leader of the Anti-Fascist Action group. They managed to reunite occasionally, cutting a live album for Mordam Records (2001's Live from the Justice League) and even revisiting the United States for their first live show in almost twenty years.

Creating radical themes exposed in the bounds of the most turbulent influences of styles like punk revival and Oi!, the Forgotten eventually managed to gather a considerable legion of fans, not only in the U.S. but also in Europe, where their stirring themes granted them raving audiences. Hailing from San Jose, CA, the Forgotten formed in 1997 due to the initiative of frontman Gordy Carbone and guitarist Craig Fairbaugh. The Forgotten's second release for BYO is a collection of rare B-sides, some new material, and, well, out of print compilation tracks. It holds together well as a cohesive LP, however, since the Bay Area outfit's m.o. is so cut and dried: raw, working-class punk rock with a debt to early Clash and the Oi! movement. Vocalist Gordy, guitarist Craig, bassist Johnny, and drummer D. Kash drink and fight their way through 18 tracks, reveling in the simple beauty of well-done punk rock. Pub rock shout-alongs, gang backing vocals, rudimentary chord progressions that nevertheless get the job done -- it's all here, unified by the snarling delivery of Gordy, who upholds the longstanding tradition of American punkers who sing with an affected, studded-leather British accent. In fact, Gordy sounds quite a bit like old buddy old pal, Rancid kingfish, and occasional Forgotten producer Lars Frederiksen, whose own fake accent is legendary in the scene. Album standouts include another version of the band's classic "Class Separation," "Guilty," and "Imposter," which is worth it simply to hear Gordy sneer "C'mon man and take another sheeeee-ot." The album closes with four new tracks that, while displaying a much grittier sound, don't have the rousing, rollicking quality of the best Forgotten material. Only "American Rock 'n' Roll Rebellion," a bitter anthem that asks where the real, whiskey-soaked rock music went, seems fueled by the pride and reckless attitude that helped the band rise above the rest of the punk revival acts out there. But despite the weak ending, Out of Print is essential for fans eager to fill in their Forgotten back catalogs without having to track down the hard to find compilations and B-sides where much of this material originally appeared. by Johnny Loftus (Allmusic.com)

Tracks : skank / class separation / horrorshow / the corp / battle on the streets / nothing to lose / trouble / imposter / another shot / guilty / no control / breakaway / we're alright / the freedom / silent weapons / american rock'n' roll rebellion / lost in time / ain't gonna lose the war.

The Stranglers - The Early Years - 74-55-76 Rare Live

The Stranglers are an English rock music group, formed on September 11, 1974 in Guildford, Surrey. They were originally called The Guildford Stranglers and operated from an off-licence in the town. They also based themselves in the nearby village of Chiddingfold for a while. Original personnel were singer/guitarist Hugh Cornwell (from Kentish Town, London), keyboardist/guitarist Hans Warmling (from Sweden, replaced within two years by Brighton-born keyboardist Dave Greenfield), London-born bass guitarist Jean-Jacques Burnel and drummer Jet Black (a.k.a. Brian Duffy), a native of Ilford, Essex.
They began as a sinister sounding, hard-edged pub rock group, but eventually branched out to explore other styles of music. The Stranglers were, beginning in 1976, tangentially associated with punk rock, due in part to their opening for The Ramones' first British tour. The Stranglers were also associated with new wave music as well as gothic rock, but their idiosyncratic approach never fitted completely within any musical genre. JJ Burnel has however said in an interview, "I certainly considered myself to be a punk-rocker". In another interview he goes further saying, "I would like to think we (The Stranglers) were more punk plus and then some".

The Boys : Punk Rock Rarities

Casino Steel had been in the influential Hollywood Brats who formed in London in 1972 around the songwriting partnership of Steel (keyboards) and Andrew Matheson (vocals). Similar in style and looks to the New York Dolls they were born out of disgust and aimed to shock. They were originally called The Queen until they had an altercation at the Marquee with Freddie Mercury’s Queen who subsequently had a hit single, forcing them to change their name to the Hollywood Brats. They played regular gigs in London including the Café Des Artistes and the Speakeasy building up a small band of followers, which included Keith Moon of The Who. Their debut album “Grown Up Wrong” captured the raw energy and excitement of the band but was initially only released in Scandinavia in 1974 after the Brats had broken up.
Following the demise of the Brats Steel met up with Matt Dangerfield, who had converted the basement of his rented flat in Maida Vale into a recording studio. 47A Warrington Crescent became extremely important in the development of the UK punk scene in the mid seventies.

Disorder : The Rest Home for the Senile Old Punks Proudly Presents...Disorder

Bristol, England's Disorder emerged in the early '80s out of the second wave of British punk. The group took the D.I.Y. aesthetic so much to heart that they refused to sign with a record company, releasing their music on their own eponymously named label instead, beginning with the 1981 EP Complete Disorder. 1983's Mental Disorder EP aligned the group with politically charged punks like Crass and Conflict....by Jason Ankeny

The Vibrators : Demos & Rarities (2000)

Review by Bart Bealmear
Despite the fact that the Vibrators have earned little respect over the years, it's undeniable that they produced some of punk's catchiest songs, as evident here by such early material as "We Vibrate," "Dance to the Music" (later retitled "Whips & Furs" for the band's initial 45), and "She's Bringing You Down" (hindered by a deteriorating master tape, an annoyance that also plagues "I Can See It in Your Eyes"). Still, it is unfortunate to note that the majority of these 1976 recordings lack the infectious energy that helped make Pure Mania such an exciting debut. The liveliness was restored for the 1977 sessions, but by this time the songwriting began to suffer (though "He's a Psycho" and "24 Hour People" are worthy tunes). The two previously unreleased bonus tracks ("Drive" and "Still Not Over You") date from 1990 and 1985, respectively. Demos and Rarities provides some historical significance, as the Vibrators were one of the first punk bands to record (in March 1976), preceding the Sex Pistols by a little over a month.

Circle Jerks : Show Must Go Off! Live at the House of Blues (2005)

** DVD Audio Rip

This release proves the Circle Jerks' prominent position in the canon of punk rock is well deserved with a live performance at the House of Blues, shot with multiple Panasonic DVX 100 cameras to give home audiences a complete viewing and listening experience. A band of legendary stature, the original lineup included such punk rock heavy hitters as former DOA drummer Chuck Biscuits, who later went on to a career with Danzig; Keith Morris (ex-Black Flag) and Greg Hetson (ex-Redd Kross, later Bad Religion) on vocals; Roger (Dowding) Rogerson (bass); and Lucky Lehrer (drums) rounding out the bill. The Jerks' driving sound resurrected the ethos of the Sex Pistols and the Ramones, incorporating an athletic element characteristic of their native LA surf and skateboarding culture. Playing 25 favorites from throughout their career, and featuring an informational commentary, this document is a must have for fans and collectors.

Angelic Upstarts : Alternative Chartbusters (1991 - LP)

The Angelic Upstarts were a staunchly anti-fascist, anti-police, working class punk band of late 1970s and early 1980s. The "Upstarts" (as they are commonly referred) formed in South Shields, North-East England in 1977.
The original line up for the band was Mensi (vocals), Mond (guitar), Steve Forsten (bass) and Decca Wade (drums). The band have reformed and split a few times over the years and some of the ex members include bass players, Ronnie Wooden, Glyn Warren, Tony Feedback, Ronnie Rocker and Max Splodge who also had a stint playing drums. Other drummers have included Sticks (who later joined The Cockney Rejects), Paul Thompson (ex Roxy Music) and Chris White. Decca Wade rejoined the band for a few years before leaving again.
Brian Hayes originally joined the band as second guitarist until Mond left leaving Brian as the only guitarist. Mensi is the only original member to still be with the band.

The Apers : The Buzz Electric (2003)

The Buzz Electric, the 2nd album by the uncrowned kings of European poppunk, contains 12 pop-drenched rock 'n' roll smash hits from this Dutch four-piece. It's steamy, it's fresh and it's loaded with energy. Whoever said poppunk is for pussies? Well, this is some hardrocking stuff!
The Buzz Electric is the result of hard work, amazing songwriting skills and a love for rock 'n' roll in all it's forms. Recorded over many cold dark dates in December 2002 and January 2003 at the Excess Studio in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, where they also laid down the tracks for their self titled debut full length album. For the single Almost Summer, the band made a nicy nice video clip which got airplay on various music channels including the Dutch MTV and the Box. But that kind of stuff is not that important, that The Buzz Electric is filled to the brim with puckrock anthems is!

the Planet Smashers : No Self Control (2001)

Formed in 1994 in Montreal, Quebec, the Smashers’s infectious pop infused melodies, rippin’ horn licks and killer live shows, quickly established them as the city’s “Kings of Ska”. They released their first album (“Self-Titled”) on Planet Smasher’s founder Matt Collyer’s own label STOMP Records and hit the road. By 1997 they were no longer a local band, but a national phenomenon, headlining shows across Canada and pushing their second record, “Atttack of The Planet Smashers” which reached #2 on the national college radio charts for 2 months straight. Their third album “Life of The Party” took the continent by storm, aided no doubt by the commercialization of ska by such bands as Mighty Mighty Bosstones and No Doubt. “Life of the Party”, The Planet Smashers won the Montreal Independent Music Award for best ska band and drew attention from major labels, bands, publishers and booking agents all over the world.

Mensen : Oslo City

Okay, they might not be able to take Kittie, but it's fairly certain that Mensen could knockout the Donnas in about two minutes, which just happens to be about the average length of their blazing hotrod songs. This three-chicks-and-a-dick group from Norway certainly wear their love of the Runaways on the studded leather sleeves, but they are also influenced by more choppy contemporary punk bands such as the Hellacopters and Gluecifer. Showing considerable growth and polish since their previous barn-burner, Delusions of Grandeur, > Oslo City is bursting at the seams with charging, buzzing guitars, stampeding rhythms and sputtering sing-along anthems about taking charge and kicking ass, complete with requites hoots and hollers. Fast, furious and frolicking fun, with Mensen on the loose, Oslo just might become the city that never sleeps.

A new sound for Blitz, Joy Division mixed with the Cure? May or may not have been made to cash in on the New Romantic scene, I don't care which because I like it. Angelic Upstarts : Sons of Spartacus (2002)

The Angelic Upstarts formed in South Shields, North-East England 1977.
Influenced by bands such as The Clash and The Sex Pistols, The Angelic Upstarts are a meeting of working class ideology and musical aspiration.
Mensi was always liable to provoke reaction, his lyrics making much of his working class roots, and lashing out at police and politicians.
The original line up consisted of Mensi (vocals), Mond (guitar),Steve Forsten (bass) and Decca Wade (drums). The Angelic Upstarts launched their punk crusade with the independently released single 'The Murder of Liddle Towers' in 1978. The band paid for the recording and pressing of 500 singles which they released themselves and sold at gigs and local record shops.
The single was then picked up by Small Wonder Records who released it nationally.
It's attack on police brutality earned them an early patron in Sham 69's Jimmy Pursey, who chased a similar constituency of disaffected working-class fans.
The band then signed to Warner Brothers, Pursey producing the L.P. "Teenage Warning" (1979).
The band's wholehearted delivery coupled with their denunciation of racism - a particularly admirable stance at a time when other "skinhead bands", were flirting with right wing elements - made the album a classic.
With the UK hit singles, 'I'm An Upstart' and 'Teenage Warning' (both 1979), they focused on the plight of the working class. The band went on to release a number of successful albums and minor hit singles before splitting in 1983.
Angel Dust (The Collected Highs,1983) was a useful compilation of their best early work. The band have reformed and split a few times over the years and some of the ex members include... bass players, Ronnie Wooden, Glyn Warren, Tony Feedback, Ronnie Rocker and Max Splodge who also had a stint playing drums. The band had two full-length live releases 'Anthems Against Scum' and 'Live From The Justice League'. More recently, Mensi revamped the Upstarts with an all star line-up (See news page for details) and this line-up recorded the first new Angelic Upstarts studio album in years, entitled "Sons of Spartacus". Bringing the Upstarts to a mostly new generation of fans, still playing in tune with the anti-fascist cause.
Pure dedication.

Common Rider : This is Unity Music (2000)

Common Rider was a ska punk band, formed in 1999 by Jesse Michaels (guitar, vocals), Mass Giorgini (bass) and Dan Lumley (drums). The band had a much softer note than that of Michaels' first group, Operation Ivy, but still contained the same amount of energy and passion.
The band's name is taken from a 1970's Japanese TV show, Kamen Raidâ (Kamen Raidâ means "Mask Rider" or "Masked Rider" in Japanese.)
The band released two full-length albums and one EP. Last Wave Rockers was released in 1999 on Lookout! Records. Thief In a Sleeping Town EP was also released on Lookout! Records in 2001 and featured Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day (guitar/backing vocals). The band released This Is Unity Music on Hopeless Records in 2002. The band toured the US extensively the same year, including the 2002 Plea For Peace tour, sponsored by Asian Man Records. On the tour, Phillip Hill (from Teen Idols and also a major contributor on the album This is Unity Music) and Joe Mizzi (An unknown from Metro, Detroit and also a guest vocalist on the album This Is Unity Music) played guitar for the band. The band's latest release was a split with Against All Authority in April 2005, containing outtakes from 2002's This Is Unity Music.
Mass Giorgini (bass) recently (2005) went out to Australia to record an album for Brisbane-based reggae/ska outfit "Scarred Hope." The album is still being worked on by many of the same people who have done work on the Operation Ivy cover booklets, and will be available through "Freewave Records."
The band broke up in 2003, mainly because of the want to pursue other opportunities. Dan Lumley officially retired from music at that time as well. Mass still plays with Squirtgun.

D.O.A. - True, Strong & Free (1987)

Rising from the ashes of The Skulls in 1978, D.O.A. is a hardcore punk band from Vancouver. Their music was often described as hardcore punk and they are often referred to as the "founders" of Hardcore by their following along with Bad Brains and D.C's Minor Threat. Their second album Hardcore 81 was thought by many to have been the first actual reference to the second wave of American punk bands sound as hardcore. Singer/guitarist Joey "Shithead" Keithley is the only founding member to have stayed in the band throughout its entire history, however original bassist Randy Rampage has rejoined DOA after a long absence and is in the current lineup. D.O.A. has often released music on Jello Biafra's Alternative Tentacles Records, and they have released an album with Jello Biafra titled 'Last Scream Of The Missing Neighbors'.
D.O.A. has always maintained an uncompromising leftwing populist political stance. The band is known for its outspoken political opinions and has a history of playing for many causes and benefits. Its slogan is "TALK-ACTION=0". The band has been active on many issues, including Anti-racism, anti-globalization, freedom of speech, and the environment. Many bands cite D.O.A. as an influence, including Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day, Rancid, and The Offspring. [citation needed
The band's first two albums, Something Better Change and Hardcore 81 are two of the top five Canadian punk rock albums of all time. Their Triumph of the Ignoroids EP used a picture of Margaret Trudeau without permission, leading to a lawsuit that resulted in its withdrawal from the market.
Founder Joe Keithley now spends a great deal of time working with his record company Sudden Death Records which has branched off into many areas of music. Vancouver Mayor Larry Campbell declared December 21st to be "D.O.A. Day" in honor of the band's 25th anniversary. http://wikipedia.org

Gotohells : Burning Bridges (1998)

Based out of St. Petersburg, Florida, the Gotohells line up of Edward McGrady (vocals/ guitar), Timmy Lynch (bass), Hunter Oswald (drums) and Gene Boen (guitar) originated in 1993 with a reminisces of Social Distortion, Johnny Thunder and The Replacements. On top their nostalgia of country and surf from the 1960s, Stiff Pole Records first captured the bands sound on their first full-length Demolition in 1995. Following two years of touring with the likes of The Supersuckers, The Humpers and The New Bomb Turks, their second album Six Packs and Race Tracks came out in 1997. Upon the Gotohells return to Florida, the band immediately worked on their third album Burning Bridges, which was eventually released by Vagrant Records the following year. Rock N' Roll America appeared in early 2001. ~ Mike DaRonco, All Music Guide

The Locust : Plague Soundscapes (2003)

Rating: 5/5 Stars
Grindcore and analog synthesizers: two great tastes that taste grate together. Given that Plague Soundscapes has 23 songs clocking in a pube's length over 21 minutes - each track overstuffed with cessant shrieking, uzi-fire drumming, ocomotive guitars and deranged synthesizer ursts - nobody's getting the Locust confused with Simple Plan anytime soon. Instead of mining the same boo-scary goth-rock intros seemingly used by every underground metal unit, Joey Karam makes his electronics squirm and twitch brilliantly, ushering new possibilities into the genre via the bands spiracles.
This reviewer still ponders whether there's some deeper sociopolitical meaning behind a song called "Late For Double Date With A Pile Of Atoms In The Water Closet." Perhaps it's text from some obscure Situationist tract - or from a home enema kit. Alternative Press (Jason Pettigrew)
