Slaughter And The Dogs : Live at the Factory (1981)

Formed during the initial onslaught of U.K. punk in 1976, Manchester's Slaughter and the Dogs were the first group to release a single (the overlooked classic "Cranked Up Really High") on trailblazing hometown independent label Rabid Records. The group's lineup consisted of vocalist Wayne Barrett, guitarist Mick Rossi, bassist Howard Bates, and drummer Mad Muffet. Gigs at the noted London punk mecca the Roxy Club led to the band's inclusion in filmmaker Don Letts' documentary of that scene, and they eventually received a contract from Decca Records. Further top-notch singles followed in "Where Have All the Bootboys Gone" and "You're Ready Now," and they recorded their debut album, Do It Dog Style, in 1978. However, disagreements with Decca and the departure of vocalist Barrett, a key to the group's sound, combined to sabotage a promising career. by Steve Huey (allmusic.com)

Toy Dolls: Twenty Two Tunes Live from Tokyo (1990)

Long-lived punk outfit Toy Dolls formed in Sunderland, England, in October of 1979, originally comprising singer Pete Zulu (born Peter Robson), guitarist Olga (Michael Algar), bassist Flip (Philip Dugdale), and drummer Mr. Colin Scott. Within a month, and after just a handful of gigs, Zulu left the group, the first in a seemingly endless number of lineup changes to follow in the coming years; with new frontman Hud lasting just one live date, Olga agreed to assume vocal duties, and the remaining Toy Dolls continued as a trio. By the time the group's debut single, "Tommy Kowey's Car," followed in mid-1980, Mr. Scott had exited the lineup as well, with a procession of drummers filling in before the arrival of Teddy Toy Doll (aka Graham Edmundson) toward the end of the year. A handful of compilation tracks including "She's a Worky Ticket" and "Deirdre's a Slag" (a potshot at Coronation Street star Deirdre Barlow) further cemented Toy Dolls' absurdist leanings, and following the exit of Teddy Toy Doll the group tapped drummer Happy Bob (aka Robert Kent, who had previously teamed with Olga in the Showbiz Kids) as his replacement, issuing a self-financed, self-titled EP in September of 1981. by Jason Ankeny (allmusic.com)

This 21-track roundup showcases every A-side, B-side, and EP track released by the Essex growlers, beginning with the two cuts that debuted them (alongside Dead Man's Shadow) on the Heathrow Touchdown EP in November of 1981. From there, the CD swings into the foreboding roar of "Suicide Bag" (and its chilling B-side, a tribute to hometown Stanwell) and on through the indie hits "London Bouncers," "Question of Choice," and "Yet Another Dole Queue Song," before bidding farewell with the band's final 45, "Cocktail Credibility." !Action Pact!: Mercury Theatre & Survival of the Fattest (2005)

One of the more abrasive early-'80s British punk-pop groups, thanks in large part to the siren shrieks of lead vocalist George Cheex (actually a female), !Action Pact! released only two albums before being cast to the winds during the decline of outrageous punk bands during the mid-'80s. The group was originally formed as the Bad Samaritans, which, when re-formed in 1981, included vocalist Cheex, bassist Kim Igoe (a male), guitarist Wild Planet and drummer Joe Fungus. After renaming themselves, the quartet appeared on a split-single released by Fresh Records. Radio One DJ John Peel began playing the tracks, and invited !Action Pact! to record a session at the BBC studios, after which the group released their debut album, Mercury Theatre: On the Air!, on Fall Out Records. The following year's Survival of the Fattest was the band's last, though the American industrial label Cleopatra released a collection in the late '90s. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

U.K. Subs: Live at Roxy '77 (LP)

Around this time, the up-and-coming group recorded a live set at the infamous punk club the Roxy (just prior to its closing), with hopes of the recording being issued as their debut album. Although the recording did indeed go down, the tapes sat on a shelf for several years, before eventually being issued in 1980 under the title of Live Kicks. This led to several John Peel sessions on BBC Radio One in 1977 and 1978, and eventually, a recording contract with the GEM record label, and what's often considered to be their finest recording, their 1979 full-length debut, Another Kind of Blues.

The group enjoyed success back home straight off the bat, as they had several moderate hit singles ("Stranglehold," "Tomorrow's Girls"), appeared at the mammoth Glastonbury Festival, landed a cover story for Sounds magazine, and were even the subject of a Julien Temple-directed film documentary, entitled Punk Can Take It. 1980 saw the U.K. Subs attempt to crack the U.S. market, with a few opening gigs for the Police, as a pair of studio albums were issued, Brand New Age and Crash Course. But as the public's interest began to shift from punk to new wave/synth pop in the early '80s, the U.K. Subs saw their popularity quickly begin to dwindle, as bandmembers began to come and go. The band continued on with such further releases as 1981's Diminished Responsibility and 1982's Endangered Species (among others), as the group's sound grew more and more a kin to hard rock/heavy metal. But despite almost all of the original U.K. punk groups going their separate ways by the early to mid-'80s (the Sex Pistols, the Clash, the Damned, etc.), the U.K. Subs never split up; although Harper was often the only original member left in attendance, the group continued to issue albums and never ceased playing shows. '80s-era bassist Alvin Gibbs would go on to briefly play bass for punk godfather Iggy Pop in 1988, and even penned a book about his experiences, Neighbourhood Threat: On Tour With Iggy Pop. The '90s saw the release of countless U.K. Subs "hits" collections, the best of the bunch being 1991's Singles 1978-1982 and 1996's The Punk Singles Collection.

U.K. Subs: Huntington Beach (LP - 1985)

As part of the original punk rock movement in England during the mid-'70s, the U.K. Subs scored several hit singles in their homeland, switching between politically charged material and party-hearty rockers. Led by singer Charlie Harper (who previously fronted a R&B outfit called the Marauders), the U.K. Subs formed in November of 1976, after Harper discovered the Damned. Originally called the Subversives before shortening their name, Harper recruited guitarist Nicky Garratt, bassist Steve Slack, and a revolving door of drummers (eventually finding a semi-permanent member with Pete Davis), and soon after began plotting their plan of attack from Harper's place of business, a hairdressing salon in South London.

Chelsea: No Escape (LP - 1980)

Chelsea was one of the original punk bands to form out of the mid-70s punk frenzy that marked a generation. Fronted by ex-porno star Gene October, Chelsea has gone through almost as many personnel changes as The Fall! The subject matter most often sung about was the plight of the working class and youth gone wild. The original line-up consisted of October (vocals), guitarist William Broad (better known later as Billy Idol), bassist Tony James (later of Sigue Sigue Sputnik) and drummer John Towe. After only a few gigs (and no recordings) the trio of musicians abandoned Gene and formed a band known as Generation X (which soon dissolved resulting in solo mega-star and 1980's MTV staple Billy Idol, curled lip and all). Gene briefly recruited other musicians, Chelsea varying constantly from a trio to a quintet.
By 1979 Chelsea arrived at the "classic" line-up of October (vocals), James Stevenson (lead guitar), Dave Martin (rhythm guitar), Geoff Myles (bass) and Chris Bashford (drums). This line up lasted a full two years, the longest any Chelsea line up has lasted! This was followed by several more line up changes until a temporary line-up consisting of October (vocals as usual), Nic Austin and Steve Corfield (guitars), Tim Griffin (bass) and Chris Bashford (continuing drumming duties) briefly toured the US, to be captured on film in URGH! A MUSIC WARnot included on the soundtrack LP).
Several more changes resulted in the line-up that delivered EVACUATE to our ears. EVACUATE, while certainly a commercial failure, was a critical success (at last), but Gene finally gave in and disbanded Chelsea in early 1984 and released a solo recording LIFE AND STRUGGLE continuing his theme of singing the working class' lament...
In 1999, Gene October reunited the "classic" line-up for punk event the "Social Chaos Tour." What lies ahead? We'll just have to sit back, wait and see!

Chaotic Dischord - You've Got To Be Obscene To Be Heard (1995)

Little is known about Fuck Off You Cunt, a 1984 release credited to Chaotic Dischord and distributed on the Syndicate label. Featuring fifteen songs about booze and sexual depravity, vocals are credited to "Aphrodite" (possibly Beki Bondage), and all songs on the LP were written by "Burchill."
Bristol-based Heartbeat Productions formed Not Very Nice Records and released the Dischord compilation album Now! That's What I Call A Fuckin' Racket in 1985. At this point in their career, Chaotic Dischord began to resemble an actual band, utilizing more traditional writing and recording techniques. 1986 saw the release of Goat Fuckin' Virgin Killerz From Hell, arguably their most cohesive effort. The lyrics were more intelligible and focused, and the playing and production were tighter. Regardless, vulgarity and tastelessness were at an all-time high. Songs about rape, beastiality, violence, necrophilia, animal cruelty, and poor hygiene were proudly showcased on the LP. Very Fuckin' Bad, featuring an album cover poking fun at Michael Jackson, was issued in 1988. The LP included such Dischord favorites as "Psycho Hippy Skateboard Punx" and "Where Have All The Glueheads Gone?" Nonetheless, the album was a close copy of its predecessor, and Chaotic Dischord was clearly becoming formulaic. With record sales and general interest low, the group fizzled shortly after the release.
A new generation of fans was introduced to Chaotic Dischord in the 1990s. Fuck Off You CuntYou've Got To Be Obscene To Be Heard on Step-1 Records in 1995. A "greatest hits" package was released by Anagram Records in 1996. Shortly thereafter, Anagram re-released four classic Dischord albums on compact disc. Several of the band's better-known tracks have made their way onto late-90s punk compilations. Completely unpretentious and sonically brutal, Chaotic Dischord began as a musical gag and ended up releasing some of the most anarchistic, obnoxious, and memorable music in the history of punk rock.

Cock Sparrer: Run Away (EP)

One of the first Oi! bands, Cock Sparrer was playing loud, raw, Cockney working-class anthems as early as the first wave of British punk, although record company difficulties prevented them from issuing much material until the early '80s, when the Oi!movement was well underway. The group formed in London's East End in 1975, originally as a hard-edged pub rock combo in the vein of Dr. Feelgood. Four of the members -- vocalist Colin McFaull, guitarist Mick Beaufoy, bassist Steve Burgess, and drummer Steve Bruce -- had been schoolmates since age 11, and had been playing together in cover bands three years prior. They were joined by rhythm guitarist Garrie Lammin (Burgess' cousin), and soon began playing the Bridgehouse Pub in Canning Town on a regular basis.

Sham 69 : Tell Us the Truth (1996)

Side one of Tell Us the Truth was recorded live, and it's inarguably fascinating as an anthropological document, capturing the Cockney yob in his native environment, complete with football chants and a spontaneous chorus of "Knees Up, Mother Brown." Jimmy Pursey's communication with his audience is inarguably impressive, and some of the songs have a good head of straight-ahead energy (especially "Borstal Breakout"), but the sound is thin and the band seems to have a hard time getting into fifth gear.
The studio side actually sounds more impressive; the performances are tighter, Dave Parsons' guitar benefits from a bit of double-tracking, and Pursey sings more than he hectors. But Pursey was already starting to sound a bit pompous, and time has not been the least bit kind to songs like "I'm a Man I'm a Boy" and "Hey Little Rich Boy," which for all their sincerity don't say anything dozens of other bands haven't said better.Tell Us the Truth sounds passionate, belligerent, and kinda dumb, but that's an improvement over Sham 69's later work, where the band sounds overblown, strident, and really, really dumb. ** DOJO Records** Original Released Year: 1978

Sham 69: The Game (1996)

While most of the early British punk bands spoke of working-class concerns -- primarily unemployment and the shrinking U.K. economy, which was leaving a generation with nothing to do and nowhere to go -- many of the pioneering groups had working-class credentials that were suspect at best; the Sex Pistols' career was being molded by a haberdasher and would-be artist, while the Clash were led by the son of a diplomat. Sham 69, however, was different; proletarian and proud of it, Sham 69 was the voice of the people in the first wave of British punk, and if they were never as fashionable as such contemporaries as the Sex Pistols, the Clash, Wire, or the Jam (who, in their early days, shared Sham's provincial outlook and "we're with the kids" fan solidarity), they enjoyed a long run of chart successes and were a major influence on the street punk and Oi! by Mark DemingSham 69's last -- and least-loved -- studio album. Sham had just disbanded and re-formed within a couple of months, drafting in new drummer Mark Goldstein for this comeback. Musical adventurism is not something you'd readily associate with this crew, and though it was brave of Pursey to try to push his audience, fans were nowhere near ready to be pushed. Some of the songs are tolerable, just tolerable. But the absolute nadir is a gentle ballad number called, yep, "Poor Cow." Boy, did he have a way with words.by Alex Ogg

The Monsters where formed in 1986 in small-town Bern, capital of Switzerland. Their sound is a fuzzedout mix between 60ies garage punk, wild teenage trash rockabilly and primitive rock‘n‘roll. Its 187% no MTV and top 100 shit! The Monsters are a kickass live band who will burn every stage down. Over the years The Monsters recorded 6 albums, several singles and ep‘s and apeared on countless compilations. The record „Youth Against Nature“ was recored in the now famous Toe Rag Studios (London) by Liam Watson and Robert Butler (Miracle Workers). „I See Dead People“ came with a 1000-piece puzzle, booklet, sticker and button and was allready sold out during the tour.
The Monsters appear on Voodoorhythm Records, Switzerland. The label is famous for it‘s taste and style, as it is for the beautiful artwork. Voodoorhytm is run by Beat-Man, who (by accident...) is also the singer and guitar player of The Monsters. The Radicts: Rebel Sound (2006)

Back in the late 80's and early 90's, the Radicts were one of the biggest punk bands in New York. They took their roots from 1977 era punk bands and punched things up. Catchy songs mixed with great sing along choruses and lots of angst. Lots of angst. In the early 90's th Radicts were cited as an influence on Rancid and Billie Joe from Green Day said they were one of his favorite bands from the East Coast. Crumbsuckers: Life of Dreams (LP - 1986)

Long Island's CRUMBSUCKERS spearheaded the mid eighties amalgamation of Thrash and Punk / Hardcore principles to define the Crossover genre. The band formed as a quartet in 1983 playing New York's A7 club and cutting a demo that June entitled 'The Crumbsucker Cave'. Vocalist Chris Notaro was ex-KRACKDOWN. CRUMBSUCKERS made an immediate scene impact with the 1986 debut 'Life Of Dreams', produced by Norman Dunn and engineered by Mike Marciano being released by Combat in the USA and Music For Nations subsidiary Rough Justice in the UK. Guitarist Robbie Koebler departed after recording 1988's 'Beast On My Back' and was replaced by CARNIVORE's Mark Piovanelli. The group also replaced original vocalist Chris Notaro with Joe Haggerty from ZERO HOUR for European touring during 1988 but eventually settled on the unknown Craig Allen.
Despite having forged a commendable reputation for themselves in late 1989 CRUMBSUCKERS became HEAVY RAIN in an attempt to pursue a more Hard Rock style. Lenihan went on to forge shock S&M; Metal merchants the GENITORTURERS and vampire rockers VASARIA. Haggerty joined Arizona's KNUCKLEHEAD. The band's rhythm section of bassist Gary Meskil and drummer Dan Richardson joined heavyweights PRO-PAIN as other members founded HEAVY RAIN. Richardson later joined LIFE OF AGONY for their 1997 album 'Soul Searching Sun' and subsequently recorded two albums with STEREOMUD, a band unit in league with the STUCK MOJO credited bass player Corey Lowery and ex-LIFE OF AGONY guitarist Joey Z. Gary Meskil honoured his former act on the August 2003 PRO-PAIN album 'Run For Cover' with a re-worked version of 'Just Sit There'.
Ex-CRUMBSUCKERS guitarist Chuck Lenihan bounced back in the Spring of 2005 with a Tampa, Florida based outfit entitled GLITTER GUNS.CRUMBSUCKERS, singer Chris Notaro, guitarist Chuck Lenihan, bassist Gary Meskil and drummer Dan Richardson, joined by PRO-PAIN's Tom Klimchuck on second guitar, returned for a reunion show on August 3rd 2006 at B.B. King Blues Club in New York City to mark the 20th anniversary of their 'Life Of Dreams' album. CRUMBSUCKERS, utilising PRO-PAIN drummer J.C. Dwyer, announced February 2007 European tour dates partnered with THE ACCUSED, EXTREME NOISE TERROR and DRILLER KILLER.

Cro-Mags: The Age of Quarrel (1986)

The Cro-Mags were a hardcore band from New York City. The band, which had a strong cult following, released many records, their first two considered the most influential. They were among the first bands to fuse hardcore punk with thrash metal and were associated with the birth of a tougher attitude within the hardcore scene in the late 1980s. They were also one of the first hardcore punk bands associated with the Hare Krishna movement.
They first released a demo with songs that would eventually find themselves on their debut album The Age Of Quarrel (1986). The bass player Harley Flanagan and singer John Joseph were not the best of friends and eventually Joseph would part ways with the band leaving Harley to sing on the rest of the Cro-Mags releases. After The Age of Quarrel, the band released the record Best Wishes (1989). The record had a more heavy metal-influenced sound which alienated many of their fans. The band released another record Alpha Omega (1992) only embraced by the most devoted of their fanbase, and followed by Near Death Experience (1993). After suffering from many lineup changes and frequent breakups, the group finally disbanded, seemingly for the last time, after this record. However, in 2000 they released a record that would almost make up for their past two releases. With Revenge the Cro-Mags came back to their early hardcore roots with songs that were comparable to their first release plus some songs with a more melodic/punk rock feel.

Government.Issue: Finale

One of the longest-lived bands on the Washington, D.C., hardcore scene, Government Issue (or G.I. for short) carried the torch for traditional hardcore punk on their early records, but evolved into something more adventurous by adding bits of metal, new wave pop, and psychedelia. Frontman John Stabb (born John Schroeder) guided the group through a legion of personnel shifts and several label changes, which made their nine-year lifespan all the more remarkable. Since their demise, G.I. has remained somewhat overlooked in relation to the rest of the D.C. hardcore bands of their time, in part because their music never really fit the proto-emo bent of much of the local Dischord stable. They did have a following in the straight-edge community, although Stabb's stance on drinking was more one of moderation than absolute purity.Government Issue was born in 1981 out of the ashes of a group called the Stab, from which lead vocalist John Schroeder took what eventually became his stage name (he also went by John Stabb Schroeder on occasion). by Steve Huey

Dropkick Murphys: Boys on the Dock (EP - 1998)

The hardcore punk outfit Dropkick Murphys formed in south Boston in 1995; vocalist Mike McColgan, guitarist Rick Barton, and bassist Ken Casey comprised the original nucleus of the group, with a series of drummers passing through the lineup before the addition of Matt Kelly in 1997. After a series of EPs including Fire and Brimstone, Tattoos and Scally Caps, and Boys on the Docks, the Dropkick Murphys signed to Hellcat Records to issue their 1998 full-length Do or Die, produced by Rancid's Lars Frederiksen; McColgan exited the group soon after (he later went on to form the like-minded Street Dogs) and was replaced by vocalist Al Barr for the follow-up, 1999's The Gang's All Here. by Jason Ankeny

30 Amp Fuse: Wind Up (1995)

With their musical that has been described as "crunch pop," 30 Amp Fuse has provided their hometown of Knoxville, Tennessee with a high speed of aggressive power-pop. Debuting in 1995 with their first full-length Wind Up, the line-up of Mike Smithers (vocals/ guitar), Jason Ratliff (drums) and Joshua Bentley (bass) followed with a signing to the BMG distributed label Dedicated. Resulting in the album Saturday Night at the Atomic Speedway, 30 Amp Fuse had the production backing of The Descendants Steve Egerton and Bill Stevenson to coincide with their fast paced styling. Bodyjar: Rimshot! (1996)

The Melbourne, Australia, group Bodyjar began life around 1991 as a blistering rock foursome called Damnation. Members were guitarists Cameron Baines and Ben Petterson, bassist Grant Relf, and drummer Charles Zerafa. The band finished a couple of demos, and then changed its name to Helium for its third. By 1994, the power pop group had settled into the name Bodyjar, signed to the Shagpile Records label, and recorded a debut EP, Time to Grow Up. The guys followed the EP with a full-length album, Take a Look Inside. There was also a change in members that year; Charles Zerafa stepped out and drummer Ross Hetherington moved in to replace him.
Through the rest of the '90s, Bodyjar reached a point of success in Australia, Japan, Europe, Canada, and the United States. In 1996, the group completed the album Rimshot! and a year later released the EP Strange Harvest. No Touch Red followed in 1998. In between recording time in the studio, Bodyjar increased its fan base by touring with groups like NOFX, Offspring, Blink-182, Face to Face, Spiderbait, and others.
In 1999, original member Ben Petterson departed from the band and was quickly replaced by guitarist Tom Read. For 2000, Bodyjar signed with EMI Records, put some bonus tracks on the debut album Take a Look Inside, and recorded a brand new album, How It Works. "Running Out of Time," "Five Minutes Away," and "Good Enough" are some of the melodic pop-punk tracks on this millennium offering. by Charlotte Dillon

The Hellacopters: Disappointment Blues (1998)

With their fierce debut, "Supershitty To The Max!" and subsequent follow-up "Payin' The Dues," the Hellacopters have definitely proved that they are a force to be reckoned with. Their sound is equal parts MC5, Stooges, and vintage Black Sabbath. Add the swagger of the Rolling Stones and a whole lot of attitude and you have two of the greatest rock records of all time in this writer's opinion. On "Disappointment Blues," the band releases some hard to find b-sides as well as three new tracks ("Heaven," "Disappointment Blues," and "455 SD"). This collection shows the band adding some more melodic vocals to the mix and even coming up with a, dare I say it, "catchy" little "pop" song in "Heaven". But don't give up on these guys yet, because they haven't lost a bit of their attitude and aggression as evidenced by their rendition of Motorhead's "Speed Freak" and tracks like "Long Gone Losers" and "Ferrytale." The rest of the tracks here will make the listener feel that they are in a time warp, from the 60's garage rock/surf influence of "455 SD" to the 70's styled, anthemic title track. Despite references to the past, they never come off sounding borrowed or regurgitated. On a sad note, this album marks the last recordings with original guitarist Dregen, who left the band last year to concentrate on his Backyard Babies. The three new songs feature the fine guitar work of Chuck Pounder as well as new permanent addition Boba Fett, who up to this point had only appeared on their albums as a session player, on Fender Rhodes and piano. However, Chuck did not accompany the 'Copters on their recent U.S. tour and in his place was the talented Matthias. Daily Terror: Deutsches Bier (7-inches EP)

Each year (with the exception of 1997-2002), German punks in the thousands would converge on a city for a festival involving demonstrations, live music, and (naturally) incredible bouts of binge-drinking. These assemblies often turned incredibly brutal; most notably, a portion of Hannover was invaded at the hands of more than 3,000 punks during the 1995 Chaostage. These punks burned cars and looted shops, until 800 were arrested and the rest went home.

Daily Terror: Andere Zeiten (1999)

Founded in 1980 by Pedder Teumer, the Oi! Punk band Daily Terror didn't take long to become a hit; only a little after its inception, Daily Terror was offered several slots on the legendary No Fun sampler. However, it took them until 1982 to release their first album, Schmutzige Zeiten ("Dirty Times"). They started out on the famous AGR (Aggressive Rock Productions) label, with which many great German punks worked at that time - legends such as Slime, Neurotic Arseholes, and Toxoplasma. On AGR, Daily Terror released the aforementioned Schmutzige Zeiten, Aufrecht ("Upstanding, Rightous"), Durchbruch ("Breakthrough"), and the mini-LP Gefühl und Härte ("Feeling and Hardness"). Through hits such as "Todesschwadronen" ("Death Squads") and "Hinterlist" ("Cunning"), not to mention their incredible performance at the 1983 Chaostage* in Hannover, Daily Terror quickly became one of Germany's most respected and popular bands.
After the shift from AGR to A.M. Music, the albums Die Abrechnung ("The Reckoning, The Account") and Apocalypse appeared. They didn't seem to be of the same quality that Daily Terror's earlier releases had been, but were nonetheless respectably populated with facet-rich German Oi! Punk. After a new shift to the Impact Records label (Duisburg) in 1994, Daily Terror released the spectacular Gnadenlos Live ("Merciless Live"), re-establishing themselves as one of Germany's finest acts. Later that year, a split 7" record with Dödelhaie, another German band, was to follow. Also on Impact Records, Daily Terror's sixth studio album "Krawall 2000" (Vandalism and Unruliness 2000) showed up in 1997. Songs such as "Falscher Fuffziger" (lit: Counterfeit Fifty [mark bill] / fig: Real Crook) and "Verstörte Kids" ("Destroyed Youth") proved that they hadn't lost anything. Daily Terror took a pause in 1998 when Pedder became a father, and released Andere Zeiten ("Other Times") in 1999 to make up for the long pause. This compilation featured unreleased and rare tracks from their early years, and made way for a whole new wave of fans that has taken them into the new millenium. After 20-some-odd years, Daily Terror remain among the most famous and well-loved German punk bands of all.

Ramones: Bonzo Goes to Bitburg (12-inches EP)

"My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down (Bonzo Goes to Bitburg)" is a song written by Dee Dee Ramone, Jean Beauvoir and Joey Ramone, and recorded by the Ramones in protest of Ronald Reagan's visit to a soldier's cemetery in Bitburg, West Germany1985 in May.
The visit had been criticised in Europe as well as in the United States because 49 members of the SS, paramilitary organization that helped run the Naziextermination camps during World War II, were buried there. Some of SS members buried at Bitburg came from units that committed atrocities, including the murder of American POWs. According to White House Chief of Staff Donald Regan, in Reagan's view the majority of the soldiers who were buried at the cemetery were "simply soldiers of the German army.... There were thousands of such soldiers for whom Nazism meant nothing but the brutal end of a short life".
The lyrics are a departure from the Ramones' usual style, with a more outwardly serious content. Joey and Dee Dee Ramone had written the song with producer and former Plasmatics bassist/keyboardist Jean Beauvoir. Joey, who was Jewish, had started on the song lyrics after being almost physically sickened by the Reagan visit, feeling that the President had disrespected the six million victims of the Holocaust by visiting Bitburg. "Bonzo Goes to Bitburg" was originally meant to be the sole title of the song, but guitarist Johnny Ramone, a conservative Republican and Reagan supporter, insisted that the refrain of "My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down" be the title on American releases of the song, and the reference to Reagan be in parentheses.
The song was used in the soundtrack of the film School of Rock.

D.O.A.: The Black Spot (1995)

The Black Spot does not beat out Loggerhead as best album in the nineties but comes very close. D.O.A.The Black Spot, D.O.A. is still making statements but they are able to capture the spirit that their first records had. Joey Shithead and Brian Goble's lyrics sound more grown-up but still very angry. The rage wasn't translating on albums like Murder or 13 flavors of Doom. It is easy to see the songs on The Black Spot being played live where as Murder and 13 Flavors of Doom don't seem to have any anthems. The earliest and most memorable D.O.A. songs always had a simple catch phrase that you could chant along with. They made great punk rock anthems. The Black Spot has these kinds of anthems that hadn't been present on D.O.A. in along time. Songs like "Order" are classic West Coast Hardcore made twenty years after the fact. It is amazing to see a band that appeared to have run its course come back with two solid albums in the early and mid-nineties. The Black Spot deserves to be held up with D.O.A.'s earliest work as well as their work with Jello Biafra. Loggerhead, The Last Scream of the Missing Neighbors and The Black Spot seemed to signify a Second Coming for D.O.A. but unfortunately it didn't last.
