There are three sporting events known as the Madrid Open:
The Madrid Open, currently sponsored by Mutua Madrileña, is a male and female professional tennis tournament, currently held in Madrid, Spain, during the first week of May. The event is classified as an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event on the Association of Tennis Professionals tour and a Premier Mandatory event on the Women's Tennis Association tour. In the past it has also been known as the Mutua Madrileña Madrid Open and before that the Madrid Masters. Despite having been played on blue courts in the 2012 tournament edition the ATP decided against it for the 2013 edition.
Ion Ţiriac, former Romanian ATP player and now billionaire businessman, is the current owner of the tournament. Țiriac stated that he has an annual net profit of over €35 million and that his tournament brings to Madrid revenues exceeding €200 million.
From 1990 through 2008, the tournament was classified as an ATP Masters Series event on the men's tour. The event was held in Essen, Germany in 1995 and Stockholm, Sweden from 1990 through 1994. When the tournament moved from Stockholm to Essen, the Stockholm Open continued as an ATP World Series tournament. From 1996 through 2001, the event was held in Stuttgart, Germany and from 2002 through 2008 at the Madrid Arena. The tournament was played from 1990 through 2008 on indoor hardcourts. In 2009, the surface became clay courts, the venue was changed to the Park Manzanares, and the tournament was expanded to include WTA professionals.
Kerber (Serbian Cyrillic: Кербер; trans. Cerberus) is a Serbian and former Yugoslav hard rock band from Niš.
The original members of Kerber were Goran Šepa "Gale" (vocals), Tomislav Nikolić (guitar), Branislav "Bane" Božinović (keyboard), Zoran Stamenković (drums) and Zoran Madić (bass guitar). In 1981, formerly known as Top (trans. Cannon), the band changed its name to Kerber. In November 1981, Kerber had their first official concert in Muzički klub in Niš. During 1982 the band had numerous concerts in Niš and Serbia, while working on the material for their first album. In early spring of 1982, Madić left the band due to his army obligations. He was replaced by former Mama Rock and Plamteće Nebo member Zoran "Sosa" Žikić who had an attractive on-stage performance: he played an axe-shaped guitar and performed fire breathing. In May 1983, Kerber won the first place at Omladinski Festival in Subotica with the song "Mezimac" ("Minion").
Angelique Kerber (born 18 January 1988) is a German-Polish professional tennis player.
Having made her professional debut in 2003, Kerber rose to prominence upon reaching the semifinals of the 2011 US Open, at which time she was ranked no. 92 in the world. She achieved a career-high ranking of world No. 2 on February 1, 2016 and is the highest-ranked European and left-handed player on the WTA Tour.
Known for her aggressive counter-punching game and left-handed shots, Kerber has won eight singles titles and at least one title on every surface on the WTA Tour, most notably her first Grand Slam title at the 2016 Australian Open. She has won a further five titles at the Premier-level tournaments of Paris (indoors), Charleston, Stuttgart, Birmingham and Stanford. Furthermore, she has won eleven singles, and three doubles titles on the ITF tour during her career.
Angelique Kerber was born in Bremen, to her Polish father Sławomir Kerber and her German mother Beata (née Rzeźnik, daughter of a Polish businessman Janusz Rzeźnik), and has one sister, Jessica. She started playing tennis aged three and eventually joined the junior circuit. She lives in Puszczykowo, where her maternal grandfather Janusz Rzeźnik built Tennis Academy 'Angie' for her. She made inroads at events in Germany and elsewhere in Europe, but did not win a junior title before 2003, at which point she had already turned professional aged 15. Kerber speaks German, Polish and English. She also holds dual German-Polish citizenship, although she has competed for Germany since the start of her career.

The gloves are off in women’s tennis, with one high-profile player laying into banned doper Maria Sharapova within hours of her controversial return to the game. Returning to the circuit after a 15-month ban for doping, Sharapova had a hard-fought straight sets win over Italian Roberta Vinci in the first round of the Stuttgart Grand Prix. Sharapova, 30, received a lukewarm reception Thursday morning (AEST) as she made her way on to the court, with the 4500 spectators offering only polite applause and some whistling. Several players had expressed dismay in recent week that the Russian star was handed a controversial wildcard for the German tournament, having had no ranking points after more than a year out following her suspension for using banned substance meldonium. While 2015 US Open...
