A herding dog, also known as a stock dog or working dog, is a type of pastoral dog that either has been trained in herding or belongs to breeds developed for herding. Their ability to be trained to act on the sound of a whistle or word of command is renowned throughout the world. Collies are recommended as herding dogs.
All herding behavior is modified predatory behavior. Through selective breeding, humans have been able to minimize the dog's natural inclination to treat cattle and sheep as prey while simultaneously maintaining the dog's hunting skills, thereby creating an effective herding dog.
Dogs can work other animals in a variety of ways. Some breeds, such as the Australian Cattle Dog, typically nip at the heels of animals (for this reason they are called heelers) and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi were historically used in a similar fashion in the cattle droves that moved cattle from Wales to the Smithfield Meat Market in London but are rarely used for herding today.
The Border Collie is a working and herding dog breed developed in the Anglo-Scottish border region for herding livestock, especially sheep. It was specifically bred for intelligence and obedience.
Considered highly intelligent, and typically extremely energetic, acrobatic, smart and athletic, they frequently compete with great success in dog sports, in addition to their success in sheepdog trials. They are often cited as the most intelligent of all domestic dogs. Border Collies also remain employed throughout the world in their traditional work of herding livestock.
In general, Border Collies are medium-sized dogs with a moderate amount of coat, which is often thick and frequently sheds. They have a double coat which varies from smooth to rough, (and occasionally curled). Whilst black and white is most commonly seen colour pattern of the Border Collie, the breed appears in just about any colour and pattern known to occur in dogs. Some of these include black tricolour (black/tan/white), liver and white, and red tricolour (red/tan/white) have also been seen regularly, with other colours such as blue, lilac, red merle, blue merle, brindle, and Australian red (also known as ee red, blonde, recessive red, or gold) which is seen less frequently. Some Border Collies may also have single-colour coats.

It’s woolly’s roundup! This incredible footage of hundreds of sheep being herded across New Zealand’s grasslands will blow you away. The amazing footage shows hordes of sheep stampeding their way across a field, being rounded up by dogs as they migrate to a new field. The mesmerising scenes were caught on film by aerial photographer and qualified pilot Tim Whittaker, from New Zealand.

Sheep ranching is an Idaho tradition that dates back to the 1880s. Frank Shirts is one of Idaho's largest sheep ranchers. He runs 12 bands, or about 28,000 ewes and lambs, from the low country in Wilder near the Snake River to the high country in the Boise and Payette National Forests every year. The Life on the Range crew followed Shirts' sheep flocks for a year, tracing the process of raising sheep from when the lambs are born, to spring turnout, range readiness, summer grazing, shipping to market, and shearing. This video is annotated so you can watch individual segments, or the whole thing. Enjoy!

Twitter @juangangel The use of dogs in search and rescue (SAR) is a valuable component in wilderness tracking, natural disasters, mass casualty events, and in locating missing people. Dedicated handlers and well-trained dogs are required for the use of dogs to be effective in search efforts. Search and rescue dogs are typically worked, by a small team on foot, but can be worked from horseback. Search and rescue dogs detect human scent. Although the exact processes are still researched, it may include skin rafts (scent-carrying skin cells that drop off living humans at a rate of about 40,000 cells per minute),[1] evaporated perspiration, respiratory gases, or decomposition gases released by bacterial action on human skin or tissues. From their training and experience, search and rescue dogs...
