Prosecuting crimes of sexual violence - International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia
The Outreach Programme of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia has released a new web feature on the prosecution of the crimes of sexual violence.
The feature describes the enormous contribution the Tribunal made to the prosecution and adjudication of crimes of this nature.
Together with its sister tribunal for Rwanda, the Tribunal was among the first courts of its kind to bring explicit charges of wartime sexual violence, and to define gender crimes such as rape and sexual enslavement under customary law. Today, proceedings are ongoing for 19 accused whose indictments contain charges of sexual violence.

In this panel discussion, we will delve into the complex chronicle of the ICTY's history, tracing its path from inception to its pioneering role in shaping both international law and International Humanitarian Law (IHL). We will examine the notable trials and judgments that have carved the tribunal's distinct place in the global judicial landscape.
We will explore the tribunal's crucial role in defining the contours of IHL, casting a spotlight on how the ICTY has significantly contributed to the recognition of certain war crimes and crimes against humanity. Our panel will delve into the evolution of IHL norms through the prism of ICTY's jurisprudence.
Our distinguished panel, which includes individuals who were directly involved in the ICTY, will share their experiences and insights from within the walls of this iconic institution. These firsthand accounts will paint a vivid picture of the tribunal's inner workings, the challenges faced, and the triumphs celebrated.
Importantly, we will examine the impact and significance of such mechanisms in enforcing international law and IHL, drawing valuable lessons from the ICTY's experiences. The discussion will illuminate how the ICTY has been instrumental in fostering global justice, holding accountable those responsible for severe breaches of international humanitarian law.

United Nations, 26 February 2009 - Daily Briefing by the Office of the Spokesperson for the Secretary General. Five former high-ranking Yugoslav and Serbian political, military and police officials were today convicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia for crimes against humanity committed in Kosovo in 1999. The former Yugoslav Deputy Prime Minister and two generals were each sentenced to 22 years imprisonment for crimes against humanity and war crimes. Two other senior army officials were found guilty of aiding and abetting the deportation and forcible transfer of ethnic Albanians from Kosovo, and each was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment.
The Tribunals Trial Chamber 3 said that former Serbian President Milan Milutinović did not have direct individual control over the Army, a federal institution; instead, it ruled, in practice, it was President Slobodan Milošević who exercised actual command authority over the Army during the campaign. The former Serbian President was therefore acquitted on all counts.

Why did Yugoslavia Collapse?
Why did Yugoslavia Collapse?
Yugoslavia. For many, a long-forgotten failed nation. For others, an all-too-painful, and recent, memory. A once-united federation made up of six neighboring republics, Yugoslavia’s existence was never a simple one. With constant ethnic and religious division, it seems that it was only a matter of time before a breakup would be imminent. But was that the only cause of Yugoslavia’s collapse? And how did the ethnic disputes actually lead to the destruction of an entire federation?...

The Balkans in Flames - End of Yugoslavia | Full Historical Documentary
The Srebrenica massacre is a wake-up call for the international community, which decides to intervene after four years of war. That same year, the warring parties sign a peace treaty.
But war soon breaks out again, this time in Kosovo. NATO intervenes and ends the fighting – a controversial mission without a UN mandate. The Balkans are still regarded as a powder keg.
The wars of the 1990s have set the region back economically; reconciliation is still difficult today.
