In an exclusive interview with FRANCE 24, the president of Iraqi Kurdistan Massoud Barzani says he will not back down on plans to hold a referendum on the semi-autonomous region’s full independence from Baghdad.
The planned referendum on Kurdish independence will take place on September 25 and there will be "no turning back", said the 70-year-old leader in a wide-ranging interview aired on Wednesday.
Talking to FRANCE 24's Marc Perelman in Erbil, the region's capital, Barzani brushed aside criticisms from his neighbours and allies, who have warned of the risk of a conflict with Baghdad at a time when Iraq is still battling against the Islamic State (IS) group.
The Kurdish leader said he had pushed back a request by US President Donald Trump's administration to postpone the referendum. Any attempt to thwart the vote would lead to “catastrophe” and the risk of a “bloody war”, he warned.
Iraq’s central government has already rejected unilateral Kurdish attempts to push for independence, insisting that any decision about the future of the country should involve input from all of its components.
Disputed territories
Kurdish officials have said the September vote will be held in the region's three governorates as well as in areas that are disputed by the Kurdish and Iraqi governments, including the flashpoint city of Kirkuk. Those disputed areas have been under Kurdish control since 2014, when Iraqi security forces fled the IS group's onslaught.
Barzani said he would do his utmost to reach a deal with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, though he cautioned that negotiations would not be open-ended. He also warned that Kurdish forces would not sit idly by should Baghdad move to close Kurdish airspace or send in troops.
The veteran leader, who has headed the Kurdistan Regional Government since 2005, said presidential and parliamentary elections would be held in Kurdistan soon after the referendum. He also said that he would not seek another term as president.
After Mosul
Regarding the continuing operations against the IS group, Barzani said the military siege of Mosul would soon end with the jihadists' defeat. However, he cautioned that the aftermath of the battle, including how to pacify and administer the multi-ethnic city and its surroundings, had not been properly planned.
In particular, the Kurdish leader urged the international coalition involved in the operations, which includes US and French special forces, to remain in the Mosul region once the battle is over to prevent the emergence of an extremist successor to the IS group.
Barzani's own Peshmerga forces were instrumental in stemming the jihadist group’s advance across northwestern Iraq in 2014 and then spearheading a counter-offensive. The broad coalition that has been battling to recapture Mosul since late last year also includes Iraqi regular troops, elite forces and Shiite militias.
The latter’s presence in areas near the Syrian border is a problem that needs to be addressed, Barzani warned. He suggested the Shiite militias were acting on behalf of Iran in order to create a corridor that would allow them into war-torn Syria.

A few weeks before Iraqi and Kurdish forces launched their offensive to retake Mosul from Islamic State group jihadists, our reporters in Iraq witnessed the final preparations for the strategic battle.
FRANCE 24 brings you an exclusive report, filmed at the end of August in northern Iraq.
Our reporters travelled to the Kurdish front line, where block by block, the Peshmerga have retaken eleven villages around Mosul, the largest city in northern Iraq and the stronghold of the Islamic State (IS) group since June 2014. Our team also went to Qayyarah, a town located around 60 km south of Mosul, where the Iraqi army has set up its rear area position and was busy preparing for the offensive on Mosul.
The operation to drive out thousands of jihadists from the north Iraqi city began overnight on Monday October 17. The crucial battle could last "several weeks, maybe months", French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Tuesday. It will be "a difficult fight'", US President Barack Obama admitted.
FRANCE 24's reporters witnessed the offensive's final planning, alongside Kurdish and Arab troops, rival forces now joined to fight a common enemy. As the noose tightens around them, the IS group jihadists use all sorts of tactics - suicide attacks, car bombings, landmines and torched oil wells - to repel the offensive on Mosul and thwart the US air strikes.

In 2014, following the withdrawal of Iraqi forces, Kurdish Peshmerga troops seized the oil-rich city of Kirkuk from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
Two years on and with a fresh joint offensive against ISIL underway, calls for Kurdish independence are getting stronger. But in the absence of any real power sharing negotiations with the Iraqi government, some are left wondering if the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) is making a landgrab instead.
The KRG - with its own executive leadership, armed forces and diplomats abroad - is able to sign oil deals with foreign companies on its own. But the KRG say they are being held back: that the Peshmerga are not armed or trained properly, and that they cannot tap into international market as freely as they would like.
If the autonomous Kurdish region were to declare independence, what would it mean to war-torn Iraq? Could it spark a new war?
In this week’s Arena, we debate the future of Iraq’s Kurds. Joining us are Iraq scholar Abbas Kadhim, and Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman, the official representative in the US of the KRG.

Iraq War 2016: Kurdish & Iraqi Special Forces In Heavy Clashes With ISIS During The Battle For Mosul.
The video shows Kurdish and Iraqi Special Forces in heavy combat action during heavy clashes with ISIS as part of the Mosul Offensive 2016 in order to clear the city of Mosul, Iraq from Daesh.
The video begins with a close call for an ISIS fighter that got nearly shot by incoming rounds and then shows an armored assault of Iraqi M1A1 Abrams tanks on ISIS positions west of Mosul filmed from the turret of one tank with a GoPro tank turret cam or in short tank cam.
After this the video shows a American volunteer fighter embedded with Kurdish Peshmerga filming the destruction of an ISIS SVBIED before the video shows a Kurdish Special Force column armed with lots of German weapons such as G36 Assault rifles, Panzerfaust 3 and Dingo armored vehicles battle ISIS and destroying several other SVBIEDs before having close combat with ISIS fighters hidden inside a house.
The last and longest part of the video shows Iraqi Special Forces in heavy combat and firefights with ISIS in the streets of Mosul.
The Battle of Mosul is a joint offensive by Iraqi government forces with allied militias, Iraqi Kurdistan, and international forces to retake the city of Mosul from the so called Islamic State.
The battle for Mosul is considered key in the military intervention against ISIS, which seized the city in June 2014.
The operation follows the Mosul offensive in 2015 and 2016. The offensive began with Iraqi troops and Peshmerga fighters engaging ISIS on three fronts outside Mosul, going from village to village in the surrounding area.
More than 120 towns and villages were liberated from ISIL control in the first two weeks of fighting. At dawn on 1 November, Iraqi Special Operations Forces entered the city on the eastern front.Met with fierce fighting, heavy combat, heavy clashes and heavy firefights the Iraqi advance into the city was slowed by elaborate defenses – including road blocks, booby traps, suicide bombers and snipers – along with the presence of civilians.
Mosul is Iraq's second most populous city. It fell to 800 ISIS militants in June 2014 because of the largely Sunni population's deep distrust of the primarily Shia Iraqi government and its corrupt armed forces.
The city was once extremely diverse, with ethnic minorities including Armenians, Yazidis, Assyrian, Turkmen, and Shabak people, who suffered considerably under the murderous Sunni Arab ISIL. Mosul remains the last stronghold of ISIS in Iraq, and the anticipated offensive to reclaim it was hyped as the "mother of all battles".
Heavy fighting will be ongoing in 2017 but there are good chances the city will be liberated from ISIS.

Iraqi Kurdistan, officially known as the Kurdistan Region (Central Kurdish: ههرێمی کوردستان, translit. Herêmî Kurdistan; Arabic: إقليم كردستان, translit. Iqlīm Kurdistān), is located in the north of Iraq and constitutes the country's only autonomous region. Bordering the Kurdish-inhabited regions of Iran to the east, Turkey to the north, and Syria to the west, it is frequently referred to as Southern Kurdistan (Central Kurdish: باشووری کوردستان; Northern Kurdish: Başûrê Kurdistanê). The region is officially governed by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), with the capital being Erbil.
Kurdistan is a parliamentary democracy with a regional assembly that consists of 111 seats.Masoud Barzani, who was initially elected as president in 2005, was re-elected in 2009. In August 2013 the parliament extended his presidency for another two years. His presidency concluded on 19 August 2015 after the political parties failed to reach an agreement over extending his presidency term. The new Iraqi constitution defines the Kurdistan Region as a federal entity of Iraq, and establishes Kurdish and Arabic as Iraq's joint official languages. The four governorates of Duhok, Hawler, Silemani, and Halabja comprise around 41,710 square kilometres (16,100 sq mi) and have a population of 8.35 million (2013 estimate). In 2014, during the 2014 Iraq Crisis, Iraqi Kurdistan's forces also took over much of the disputed territories of Northern Iraq.

Around 95% of the country's 36 million citizens are Shia or Sunni Muslims, with Christianity, Yarsan, Yezidism, and Mandeanism also present.
Iraq has a narrow section of coastline measuring 58 km (36 mi) on the northern Persian Gulf and its territory encompasses the Mesopotamian Alluvial Plain, the northwestern end of the Zagros mountain range, and the eastern part of the Syrian Desert. Two major rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, run south through the centre of Iraq and flow into the Shatt al-Arab near the Persian Gulf. These rivers provide Iraq with significant amounts of fertile land.

FRANCE 24 brings you an exclusive report, filmed at the end of August in northern Iraq. Our reporters travelled to the Kurdish front line, where block by block, the Peshmerga have retaken eleven villages around Mosul, the largest city in northern Iraq and the stronghold of the Islamic State (IS) group since June 2014. Our team also went to Qayyarah, a town located around 60 km south of Mosul, where the Iraqi army has set up its rear area position and was busy preparing for the offensive on Mosul. The operation to drive out thousands of jihadists from the north Iraqi city began overnight on Monday October 17. The crucial battle could last "several weeks, maybe months", French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Tuesday. It will be "a difficult fight'", US President Barack Obama admitted. FRANCE 24's reporters witnessed the offensive's final planning, alongside Kurdish and Arab troops, rival forces now joined to fight a common enemy. Two years on and with a fresh joint offensive against ISIL underway, calls for Kurdish independence are getting stronger. But in the absence of any real power sharing negotiations with the Iraqi government, some are left wondering if the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) is making a landgrab instead. The KRG - with its own executive leadership, armed forces and diplomats abroad - is able to sign oil deals with foreign companies on its own. But the KRG say they are being held back: that the Peshmerga are not armed or trained properly, and that they cannot tap into international market as freely as they would like. If the autonomous Kurdish region were to declare independence, what would it mean to war-torn Iraq? Could it spark a new war? In this week’s Arena, we debate the future of Iraq’s Kurds. The last and longest part of the video shows Iraqi Special Forces in heavy combat and firefights with ISIS in the streets of Mosul. The Battle of Mosul is a joint offensive by Iraqi government forces with allied militias, Iraqi Kurdistan, and international forces to retake the city of Mosul from the so called Islamic State. The battle for Mosul is considered key in the military intervention against ISIS, which seized the city in June 2014. The operation follows the Mosul offensive in 2015 and 2016. The offensive began with Iraqi troops and Peshmerga fighters engaging ISIS on three fronts outside Mosul, going from village to village in the surrounding area. More than 120 towns and villages were liberated from ISIL control in the first two weeks of fighting. At dawn on 1 November, Iraqi Special Operations Forces entered the city on the eastern front.Met with fierce fighting, heavy combat, heavy clashes and heavy firefights the Iraqi advance into the city was slowed by elaborate defenses – including road blocks, booby traps, suicide bombers and snipers – along with the presence of civilians. Mosul is Iraq's second most populous city. It fell to 800 ISIS militants in June 2014 because of the largely Sunni population's deep distrust of the primarily Shia Iraqi government and its corrupt armed forces. The city was once extremely diverse, with ethnic minorities including Armenians, Yazidis, Assyrian, Turkmen, and Shabak people, who suffered considerably under the murderous Sunni Arab ISIL. Mosul remains the last stronghold of ISIS in Iraq, and the anticipated offensive to reclaim it was hyped as the "mother of all battles". In an exclusive interview with FRANCE 24, the president of Iraqi Kurdistan Massoud Barzani says he will not back down on plans to hold a referendum on the semi-autonomous region’s full independence from Baghdad.
The planned referendum on Kurdish independence will take place on September 25 and there will be "no turning back", said the 70-year-old leader in a wide-ranging interview aired on Wednesday.
Talking to FRANCE 24's Marc Perelman in Erbil, the region's capital, Barzani brushed aside criticisms from his neighbours and allies, who have warned of the risk of a conflict with Baghdad at a time when Iraq is still battling against the Islamic State (IS) group.
The Kurdish leader said he had pushed back a request by US President Donald Trump's administration to postpone the referendum. Any attempt to thwart the vote would lead to “catastrophe” and the risk of a “bloody war”, he warned.
Iraq’s central government has already rejected unilateral Kurdish attempts to push for independence, insisting that any decision about the future of the country should involve input from all of its components.
Disputed territories
Kurdish officials have said the September vote will be held in the region's three governorates as well as in areas that are disputed by the Kurdish and Iraqi governments, including the flashpoint city of Kirkuk. Those disputed areas have been under Kurdish control since 2014, when Iraqi security forces fled the IS group's onslaught.
Barzani said he would do his utmost to reach a deal with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, though he cautioned that negotiations would not be open-ended. He also warned that Kurdish forces would not sit idly by should Baghdad move to close Kurdish airspace or send in troops.
The veteran leader, who has headed the Kurdistan Regional Government since 2005, said presidential and parliamentary elections would be held in Kurdistan soon after the referendum. He also said that he would not seek another term as president.
After Mosul
Regarding the continuing operations against the IS group, Barzani said the military siege of Mosul would soon end with the jihadists' defeat. However, he cautioned that the aftermath of the battle, including how to pacify and administer the multi-ethnic city and its surroundings, had not been properly planned.
In particular, the Kurdish leader urged the international coalition involved in the operations, which includes US and French special forces, to remain in the Mosul region once the battle is over to prevent the emergence of an extremist successor to the IS group.
Barzani's own Peshmerga forces were instrumental in stemming the jihadist group’s advance across northwestern Iraq in 2014 and then spearheading a counter-offensive. The broad coalition that has been battling to recapture Mosul since late last year also includes Iraqi regular troops, elite forces and Shiite militias.
The latter’s presence in areas near the Syrian border is a problem that needs to be addressed, Barzani warned. He suggested the Shiite militias were acting on behalf of Iran in order to create a corridor that would allow them into war-torn Syria.

Talking to FRANCE 24's Marc Perelman in Erbil, the region's capital, Barzani brushed aside criticisms from his neighbours and allies, who have warned of the risk of a conflict with Baghdad at a time when Iraq is still battling against the Islamic State (IS) group.
The Kurdish leader said he had pushed back a request by US President Donald Trump's administration to postpone the referendum. Any attempt to thwart the vote would lead to “catastrophe” and the risk of a “bloody war”, he warned.
Iraq’s central government has already rejected unilateral Kurdish attempts to push for independence, insisting that any decision about the future of the country should involve input from all of its components.
Disputed territories
Kurdish officials have said the September vote will be held in the region's three governorates as well as in areas that are disputed by the Kurdish and Iraqi governments, including the flashpoint city of Kirkuk. Those disputed areas have been under Kurdish control since 2014, when Iraqi security forces fled the IS group's onslaught.
Barzani said he would do his utmost to reach a deal with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, though he cautioned that negotiations would not be open-ended. He also warned that Kurdish forces would not sit idly by should Baghdad move to close Kurdish airspace or send in troops.
The veteran leader, who has headed the Kurdistan Regional Government since 2005, said presidential and parliamentary elections would be held in Kurdistan soon after the referendum. He also said that he would not seek another term as president.
After Mosul
Regarding the continuing operations against the IS group, Barzani said the military siege of Mosul would soon end with the jihadists' defeat. However, he cautioned that the aftermath of the battle, including how to pacify and administer the multi-ethnic city and its surroundings, had not been properly planned.
In particular, the Kurdish leader urged the international coalition involved in the operations, which includes US and French special forces, to remain in the Mosul region once the battle is over to prevent the emergence of an extremist successor to the IS group.
Barzani's own Peshmerga forces were instrumental in stemming the jihadist group’s advance across northwestern Iraq in 2014 and then spearheading a counter-offensive. The broad coalition that has been battling to recapture Mosul since late last year also includes Iraqi regular troops, elite forces and Shiite militias.
The latter’s presence in areas near the Syrian border is a problem that needs to be addressed, Barzani warned. He suggested the Shiite militias were acting on behalf of Iran in order to create a corridor that would allow them into war-torn Syria.

A few weeks before Iraqi and Kurdish forces launched their offensive to retake Mosul from Islamic State group jihadists, our reporters in Iraq witnessed the final preparations for the strategic battle.
FRANCE 24 brings you an exclusive report, filmed at the end of August in northern Iraq.
Our reporters travelled to the Kurdish front line, where block by block, the Peshmerga have retaken eleven villages around Mosul, the largest city in northern Iraq and the stronghold of the Islamic State (IS) group since June 2014. Our team also went to Qayyarah, a town located around 60 km south of Mosul, where the Iraqi army has set up its rear area position and was busy preparing for the offensive on Mosul.
The operation to drive out thousands of jihadists from the north Iraqi city began overnight on Monday October 17. The crucial battle could last "several weeks, maybe months", French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Tuesday. It will be "a difficult fight'", US President Barack Obama admitted.
FRANCE 24's reporters witnessed the offensive's final planning, alongside Kurdish and Arab troops, rival forces now joined to fight a common enemy. As the noose tightens around them, the IS group jihadists use all sorts of tactics - suicide attacks, car bombings, landmines and torched oil wells - to repel the offensive on Mosul and thwart the US air strikes.

In 2014, following the withdrawal of Iraqi forces, Kurdish Peshmerga troops seized the oil-rich city of Kirkuk from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
Two years on and with a fresh joint offensive against ISIL underway, calls for Kurdish independence are getting stronger. But in the absence of any real power sharing negotiations with the Iraqi government, some are left wondering if the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) is making a landgrab instead.
The KRG - with its own executive leadership, armed forces and diplomats abroad - is able to sign oil deals with foreign companies on its own. But the KRG say they are being held back: that the Peshmerga are not armed or trained properly, and that they cannot tap into international market as freely as they would like.
If the autonomous Kurdish region were to declare independence, what would it mean to war-torn Iraq? Could it spark a new war?
In this week’s Arena, we debate the future of Iraq’s Kurds. Joining us are Iraq scholar Abbas Kadhim, and Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman, the official representative in the US of the KRG.

The video shows Kurdish and Iraqi Special Forces in heavy combat action during heavy clashes with ISIS as part of the Mosul Offensive 2016 in order to clear the city of Mosul, Iraq from Daesh.
The video begins with a close call for an ISIS fighter that got nearly shot by incoming rounds and then shows an armored assault of Iraqi M1A1 Abrams tanks on ISIS positions west of Mosul filmed from the turret of one tank with a GoPro tank turret cam or in short tank cam.
After this the video shows a American volunteer fighter embedded with Kurdish Peshmerga filming the destruction of an ISIS SVBIED before the video shows a Kurdish Special Force column armed with lots of German weapons such as G36 Assault rifles, Panzerfaust 3 and Dingo armored vehicles battle ISIS and destroying several other SVBIEDs before having close combat with ISIS fighters hidden inside a house.
The last and longest part of the video shows Iraqi Special Forces in heavy combat and firefights with ISIS in the streets of Mosul.
The Battle of Mosul is a joint offensive by Iraqi government forces with allied militias, Iraqi Kurdistan, and international forces to retake the city of Mosul from the so called Islamic State.
The battle for Mosul is considered key in the military intervention against ISIS, which seized the city in June 2014.
The operation follows the Mosul offensive in 2015 and 2016. The offensive began with Iraqi troops and Peshmerga fighters engaging ISIS on three fronts outside Mosul, going from village to village in the surrounding area.
More than 120 towns and villages were liberated from ISIL control in the first two weeks of fighting. At dawn on 1 November, Iraqi Special Operations Forces entered the city on the eastern front.Met with fierce fighting, heavy combat, heavy clashes and heavy firefights the Iraqi advance into the city was slowed by elaborate defenses – including road blocks, booby traps, suicide bombers and snipers – along with the presence of civilians.
Mosul is Iraq's second most populous city. It fell to 800 ISIS militants in June 2014 because of the largely Sunni population's deep distrust of the primarily Shia Iraqi government and its corrupt armed forces.
The city was once extremely diverse, with ethnic minorities including Armenians, Yazidis, Assyrian, Turkmen, and Shabak people, who suffered considerably under the murderous Sunni Arab ISIL. Mosul remains the last stronghold of ISIS in Iraq, and the anticipated offensive to reclaim it was hyped as the "mother of all battles".
Heavy fighting will be ongoing in 2017 but there are good chances the city will be liberated from ISIS.

In an exclusive interview with FRANCE 24, the president of Iraqi Kurdistan Massoud Barzani says he will not back down on plans to hold a referendum on the semi-autonomous region’s full independence from Baghdad.
The planned referendum on Kurdish independence will take place on September 25 and there will be "no turning back", said the 70-year-old leader in a wide-ranging interview aired on Wednesday.
Talking to FRANCE 24's Marc Perelman in Erbil, the region's capital, Barzani brushed aside criticisms from his neighbours and allies, who have warned of the risk of a conflict with Baghdad at a time when Iraq is still battling against the Islamic State (IS) group.
The Kurdish leader said he had pushed back a request by US President Donald Trump's administration to postpone the referendum. Any attempt to thwart the vote would lead to “catastrophe” and the risk of a “bloody war”, he warned.
Iraq’s central government has already rejected unilateral Kurdish attempts to push for independence, insisting that any decision about the future of the country should involve input from all of its components.
Disputed territories
Kurdish officials have said the September vote will be held in the region's three governorates as well as in areas that are disputed by the Kurdish and Iraqi governments, including the flashpoint city of Kirkuk. Those disputed areas have been under Kurdish control since 2014, when Iraqi security forces fled the IS group's onslaught.
Barzani said he would do his utmost to reach a deal with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, though he cautioned that negotiations would not be open-ended. He also warned that Kurdish forces would not sit idly by should Baghdad move to close Kurdish airspace or send in troops.
The veteran leader, who has headed the Kurdistan Regional Government since 2005, said presidential and parliamentary elections would be held in Kurdistan soon after the referendum. He also said that he would not seek another term as president.
After Mosul
Regarding the continuing operations against the IS group, Barzani said the military siege of Mosul would soon end with the jihadists' defeat. However, he cautioned that the aftermath of the battle, including how to pacify and administer the multi-ethnic city and its surroundings, had not been properly planned.
In particular, the Kurdish leader urged the international coalition involved in the operations, which includes US and French special forces, to remain in the Mosul region once the battle is over to prevent the emergence of an extremist successor to the IS group.
Barzani's own Peshmerga forces were instrumental in stemming the jihadist group’s advance across northwestern Iraq in 2014 and then spearheading a counter-offensive. The broad coalition that has been battling to recapture Mosul since late last year also includes Iraqi regular troops, elite forces and Shiite militias.
The latter’s presence in areas near the Syrian border is a problem that needs to be addressed, Barzani warned. He suggested the Shiite militias were acting on behalf of Iran in order to create a corridor that would allow them into war-torn Syria.

FRANCE 24's reporters witnessed the offensive's final planning, alongside Kurdish and Arab troops, rival forces now joined to fight a common enemy. As the noose tightens around them, the IS group jihadists use all sorts of tactics - suicide attacks, car bombings, landmines and torched oil wells - to repel the offensive on Mosul and thwart the US air strikes.

In 2014, following the withdrawal of Iraqi forces, Kurdish Peshmerga troops seized the oil-rich city of Kirkuk from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
Two years on and with a fresh joint offensive against ISIL underway, calls for Kurdish independence are getting stronger. But in the absence of any real power sharing negotiations with the Iraqi government, some are left wondering if the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) is making a landgrab instead.
The KRG - with its own executive leadership, armed forces and diplomats abroad - is able to sign oil deals with foreign companies on its own. But the KRG say they are being held back: that the Peshmerga are not armed or trained properly, and that they cannot tap into international market as freely as they would like.
If the autonomous Kurdish region were to declare independence, what would it mean to war-torn Iraq? Could it spark a new war?
In this week’s Arena, we debate the future of Iraq’s Kurds. Joining us are Iraq scholar Abbas Kadhim, and Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman, the official representative in the US of the KRG.

Iraq War 2016: Kurdish & Iraqi Special Forces In Heavy Clashes With ISIS During The Battle For Mosul.
The video shows Kurdish and Iraqi Special Forces in heavy combat action during heavy clashes with ISIS as part of the Mosul Offensive 2016 in order to clear the city of Mosul, Iraq from Daesh.
The video begins with a close call for an ISIS fighter that got nearly shot by incoming rounds and then shows an armored assault of Iraqi M1A1 Abrams tanks on ISIS positions west of Mosul filmed from the turret of one tank with a GoPro tank turret cam or in short tank cam.
After this the video shows a American volunteer fighter embedded with Kurdish Peshmerga filming the destruction of an ISIS SVBIED before the video shows a Kurdish Special Force column armed with lots of German weapons such as G36 Assault rifles, Panzerfaust 3 and Dingo armored vehicles battle ISIS and destroying several other SVBIEDs before having close combat with ISIS fighters hidden inside a house.
The last and longest part of the video shows Iraqi Special Forces in heavy combat and firefights with ISIS in the streets of Mosul.
The Battle of Mosul is a joint offensive by Iraqi government forces with allied militias, Iraqi Kurdistan, and international forces to retake the city of Mosul from the so called Islamic State.
The battle for Mosul is considered key in the military intervention against ISIS, which seized the city in June 2014.
The operation follows the Mosul offensive in 2015 and 2016. The offensive began with Iraqi troops and Peshmerga fighters engaging ISIS on three fronts outside Mosul, going from village to village in the surrounding area.
More than 120 towns and villages were liberated from ISIL control in the first two weeks of fighting. At dawn on 1 November, Iraqi Special Operations Forces entered the city on the eastern front.Met with fierce fighting, heavy combat, heavy clashes and heavy firefights the Iraqi advance into the city was slowed by elaborate defenses – including road blocks, booby traps, suicide bombers and snipers – along with the presence of civilians.
Mosul is Iraq's second most populous city. It fell to 800 ISIS militants in June 2014 because of the largely Sunni population's deep distrust of the primarily Shia Iraqi government and its corrupt armed forces.
The city was once extremely diverse, with ethnic minorities including Armenians, Yazidis, Assyrian, Turkmen, and Shabak people, who suffered considerably under the murderous Sunni Arab ISIL. Mosul remains the last stronghold of ISIS in Iraq, and the anticipated offensive to reclaim it was hyped as the "mother of all battles".
Heavy fighting will be ongoing in 2017 but there are good chances the city will be liberated from ISIS.

In an exclusive interview with FRANCE 24, the president of Iraqi Kurdistan Massoud Barzani says he will not back down on plans to hold a referendum on the semi-autonomous region’s full independence from Baghdad.
The planned referendum on Kurdish independence will take place on September 25 and there will be "no turning back", said the 70-year-old leader in a wide-ranging interview aired on Wednesday.
Talking to FRANCE 24's Marc Perelman in Erbil, the region's capital, Barzani brushed aside criticisms from his neighbours and allies, who have warned of the risk of a conflict with Baghdad at a time when Iraq is still battling against the Islamic State (IS) group.
The Kurdish leader said he had pushed back a request by US President Donald Trump's administration to postpone the referendum. Any attempt to thwart the vote would lead to “catastrophe” and the risk of a “bloody war”, he warned.
Iraq’s central government has already rejected unilateral Kurdish attempts to push for independence, insisting that any decision about the future of the country should involve input from all of its components.
Disputed territories
Kurdish officials have said the September vote will be held in the region's three governorates as well as in areas that are disputed by the Kurdish and Iraqi governments, including the flashpoint city of Kirkuk. Those disputed areas have been under Kurdish control since 2014, when Iraqi security forces fled the IS group's onslaught.
Barzani said he would do his utmost to reach a deal with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, though he cautioned that negotiations would not be open-ended. He also warned that Kurdish forces would not sit idly by should Baghdad move to close Kurdish airspace or send in troops.
The veteran leader, who has headed the Kurdistan Regional Government since 2005, said presidential and parliamentary elections would be held in Kurdistan soon after the referendum. He also said that he would not seek another term as president.
After Mosul
Regarding the continuing operations against the IS group, Barzani said the military siege of Mosul would soon end with the jihadists' defeat. However, he cautioned that the aftermath of the battle, including how to pacify and administer the multi-ethnic city and its surroundings, had not been properly planned.
In particular, the Kurdish leader urged the international coalition involved in the operations, which includes US and French special forces, to remain in the Mosul region once the battle is over to prevent the emergence of an extremist successor to the IS group.
Barzani's own Peshmerga forces were instrumental in stemming the jihadist group’s advance across northwestern Iraq in 2014 and then spearheading a counter-offensive. The broad coalition that has been battling to recapture Mosul since late last year also includes Iraqi regular troops, elite forces and Shiite militias.
The latter’s presence in areas near the Syrian border is a problem that needs to be addressed, Barzani warned. He suggested the Shiite militias were acting on behalf of Iran in order to create a corridor that would allow them into war-torn Syria.

The video shows Kurdish and Iraqi Special Forces in heavy combat action during heavy clashes with ISIS as part of the Mosul Offensive 2016 in order to clear the city of Mosul, Iraq from Daesh.
The video begins with a close call for an ISIS fighter that got nearly shot by incoming rounds and then shows an armored assault of Iraqi M1A1 Abrams tanks on ISIS positions west of Mosul filmed from the turret of one tank with a GoPro tank turret cam or in short tank cam.
After this the video shows a American volunteer fighter embedded with Kurdish Peshmerga filming the destruction of an ISIS SVBIED before the video shows a Kurdish Special Force column armed with lots of German weapons such as G36 Assault rifles, Panzerfaust 3 and Dingo armored vehicles battle ISIS and destroying several other SVBIEDs before having close combat with ISIS fighters hidden inside a house.
The last and longest part of the video shows Iraqi Special Forces in heavy combat and firefights with ISIS in the streets of Mosul.
The Battle of Mosul is a joint offensive by Iraqi government forces with allied militias, Iraqi Kurdistan, and international forces to retake the city of Mosul from the so called Islamic State.
The battle for Mosul is considered key in the military intervention against ISIS, which seized the city in June 2014.
The operation follows the Mosul offensive in 2015 and 2016. The offensive began with Iraqi troops and Peshmerga fighters engaging ISIS on three fronts outside Mosul, going from village to village in the surrounding area.
More than 120 towns and villages were liberated from ISIL control in the first two weeks of fighting. At dawn on 1 November, Iraqi Special Operations Forces entered the city on the eastern front.Met with fierce fighting, heavy combat, heavy clashes and heavy firefights the Iraqi advance into the city was slowed by elaborate defenses – including road blocks, booby traps, suicide bombers and snipers – along with the presence of civilians.
Mosul is Iraq's second most populous city. It fell to 800 ISIS militants in June 2014 because of the largely Sunni population's deep distrust of the primarily Shia Iraqi government and its corrupt armed forces.
The city was once extremely diverse, with ethnic minorities including Armenians, Yazidis, Assyrian, Turkmen, and Shabak people, who suffered considerably under the murderous Sunni Arab ISIL. Mosul remains the last stronghold of ISIS in Iraq, and the anticipated offensive to reclaim it was hyped as the "mother of all battles".
Heavy fighting will be ongoing in 2017 but there are good chances the city will be liberated from ISIS.

The battle started after ISIS fighters slipped into Kirkuk the night before last Saturday and may have been joined by sleeper cells.
After that heavy urban clashes broke out.
Clashes are still ongoing but it seems Kurdish forces have the upper hand and the situation is mostly under control.
However Kurdish officials allready stated that ISIS attack was in vain and the recent combat in Kirkuk will have not the slightest impact on the battle for Mosul.

There are more than thirty million Kurds - most of them living in an overlapping area of Iraq, Iran, Syria and Turkey. It is said to be the biggest ethnic community in the world without a homeland. In some of the countries in which they live, they are prevented from speaking their language or obtaining citizenship. Saddam Hussein, the former Iraqi leader, used chemical weapons against the Kurds, destroyed their villages and killed tens of thousands of them during his rule. The bodies are still being unearthed. The US encouraged them to rise up against Saddam when his forces were driven out of Kuwait in 1991 but then left them hanging. And thousands died fleeing to Turkey as refugees. But the no-fly zone that the US, British and French established to protect them from Saddam's attacks, allowed them to break away from Iraqi government authority, while remaining part of Iraq. Since 2003, the Kurdish region has become the most stable and prosperous part of Iraq, fuelled by oil and Turkish investment. And while relations with Turkey have improved, they have worsened with Baghdad - with disagreements over oil, land and politics that some fear could turn violent. Massoud Barzani, the Kurdish president, has emerged as a crucial player in Iraqi politics and as the leader of Kurdish aspirations in the region. He has warned that Iraq's Kurds could seek independence if they do not get what they need from Baghdad. And that his region will not be dragged down by the rest of Iraq. On this episode of Talk to Al Jazeera, we sit down with Barzani to find out how far he is willing to go to protect and promote the interests of the Kurdish people.

There are more than thirty million Kurds - most of them living in an overlapping area of Iraq, Iran, Syria and Turkey. It is said to be the biggest ethnic community in the world without a homeland. In some of the countries in which they live, they are prevented from speaking their language or obtaining citizenship. Saddam Hussein, the former Iraqi leader, used chemical weapons against the Kurds, destroyed their villages and killed tens of thousands of them during his rule. The bodies are still being unearthed. The US encouraged them to rise up against Saddam when his forces were driven out of Kuwait in 1991 but then left them hanging. And thousands died fleeing to Turkey as refugees. But the no-fly zone that the US, British and French established to protect them from Saddam's attacks, allowed them to break away from Iraqi government authority, while remaining part of Iraq. Since 2003, the Kurdish region has become the most stable and prosperous part of Iraq, fuelled by oil and Turkish investment. And while relations with Turkey have improved, they have worsened with Baghdad - with disagreements over oil, land and politics that some fear could turn violent. Massoud Barzani, the Kurdish president, has emerged as a crucial player in Iraqi politics and as the leader of Kurdish aspirations in the region. He has warned that Iraq's Kurds could seek independence if they do not get what they need from Baghdad. And that his region will not be dragged down by the rest of Iraq. On this episode of Talk to Al Jazeera, we sit down with Barzani to find out how far he is willing to go to protect and promote the interests of the Kurdish people.
