The prototype first flew in September 1944, and deliveries began in late 1945. By the time production ended in September 1948, Fairchild had built 223 Packets. All but four were C-82A models.
Named for the packet ships that hauled cargo between coastal seaports, the C-82 included design elements now seen on most modern cargo aircraft. The tricycle landing gear, high wings and high tail booms allowed vehicles to approach the C-82 from any side, unlike the other USAAF transport aircraft that loaded only from the side. Its large rear doors opened like a clamshell, which made loading easier.
Used primarily for transporting cargo and troops, the C-82 could also carry 41 paratroops or 34 stretchers, and it could tow gliders. Beginning in 1946, some C-82s were assigned to Tactical Air Command troop carrier squadrons and others to the Military Air Transport Service. Several C-82s took part in the Berlin Airlift.
The C-82A on display flew with the Alaskan Air Command in the 1950s, and it carries the red Arctic markings used for high visibility. It was flown to the museum in 1988.

Developed by Fairchild, the C-82 was intended as a heavy-lift cargo aircraft.
First flown in 1944, the first delivery was not until June 1945 and only a few entered service before the end of World War II.
In the end, only 223 C-82As would be built, a small number for a wartime production cargo aircraft.
Most were used for cargo and troop transport, although a few were used for paratroop operations or towing military gliders.
A redesign of the XC-82B would result in the production of the Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcar.
The C-82 was retired from the United States Air Force inventory in 1954.
After the C-82A became surplus to United States Air Force requirements, small numbers were sold to civilian operators in Brazil, Chile, Mexico and the United States and these were utilized for many years as rugged freight aircraft, capable of carrying bulky items of cargo.

Airlift experience during World War II demonstrated the need for a large-capacity cargo aircraft that could be loaded from ground level, and Fairchild designed the C-82 Packet to meet the U.S. Army Air Forces’ requirements. The prototype first flew in September 1944, and deliveries began in late 1945. By the time production ended in September 1948, Fairchild had built 223 Packets. All but four were C-82A models.
Named for the packet ships that hauled cargo between coastal seaports, the C-82 included design elements now seen on most modern cargo aircraft. The tricycle landing gear, high wings and high tail booms allowed vehicles to approach the C-82 from any side, unlike the other USAAF transport aircraft that loaded only from the side. Its large rear doors opened like a clamshell, which made loading easier.
Used primarily for transporting cargo and troops, the C-82 could also carry 41 paratroops or 34 stretchers, and it could tow gliders. Beginning in 1946, some C-82s were assigned to Tactical Air Command troop carrier squadrons and others to the Military Air Transport Service. Several C-82s took part in the Berlin Airlift.
The C-82A on display flew with the Alaskan Air Command in the 1950s, and it carries the red Arctic markings used for high visibility. It was flown to the museum in 1988.

The aircraft were built at the Fairchild factory in Hagerstown, Maryland, with deliveries beginning in 1945 and ending in September, 1948.

Developed by Fairchild, the C-82 was intended as a heavy-lift cargo aircraft.
First flown in 1944, the first delivery was not until June 1945 and only a few entered service before the end of World War II.
In the end, only 223 C-82As would be built, a small number for a wartime production cargo aircraft.
Most were used for cargo and troop transport, although a few were used for paratroop operations or towing military gliders.
A redesign of the XC-82B would result in the production of the Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcar.
The C-82 was retired from the United States Air Force inventory in 1954.
After the C-82A became surplus to United States Air Force requirements, small numbers were sold to civilian operators in Brazil, Chile, Mexico and the United States and these were utilized for many years as rugged freight aircraft, capable of carrying bulky items of cargo.

*Cruise speed: 218 mph at 10,000 ft
*Stall speed: 85 mph with full flaps
*Range: 3,875 mi
*Service ceiling: 21,200 ft
*Rate of climb: 950 ft/min
*Takeoff distance to 50 ft: 3,300 ft
*Landing distance from 50 ft: 1,875 ft
