Luther is a British crime drama program starring Idris Elba as the titular character, DCI John Luther. Written by Neil Cross, the first series, comprising six one-hour long episodes, premiered on 4 May 2010 and concluded on 8 June 2010. A second series of four one-hour long episodes was commissioned; it aired on BBC One throughout June and July 2011. Following the success of the first two series, a third series was commissioned in 2012; comprising four one-hour long episodes; it aired weekly from 2 July to 23 July 2013. A two-episode fourth series was broadcast on 15 December and 22 December 2015.
Elba has been awarded a Golden Globe Award and Screen Actors Guild Award for his performance. The series has also received eight Primetime Emmy Award nominations, in various categories.
John Luther is a Detective Chief Inspector (DCI) working for the Serious Crime Unit in series one, and the new Serious and Serial Crime Unit in series two and three. A dedicated police officer, Luther is obsessive, possessed, and sometimes violent. However, Luther has paid a heavy price for his dedication; he has never been able to prevent himself from being consumed by the darkness of the crimes with which he deals. For Luther, the job always comes first. His dedication is a curse and a blessing, both for him and those close to him. In the very first episode of the series he investigates brilliant psychopath and murderer, Alice Morgan. Ultimately he is unable to arrest her due to lack of evidence, but as the program progresses, she becomes both his nemesis and unlikely companion. As she pursues her infatuation with him, he gradually relents as he is able to glean insight from her on some of the cunning criminals he pursues.
Luther is a British psychological crime drama television series that aired on BBC One in the UK between 4 May 2010 and 22 December 2015. A total of 16 episodes were produced.

Co-stars include Ruth Wilson as Alice Morgan, Warren Brown as DS Justin Ripley, Steven Mackintosh as DCI Ian Reed, and Saskia Reeves as DSU Rose Teller. As the series progresses Nikki Amuka-Bird joins as the recently promoted DCI Erin Gray, and Dermot Crowley is promoted to a starring role as DSU Martin Schenk, and Michael Smiley continues portraying Benny Deadhead.

What do the conservative Koch Industries, the liberal Ford Foundation, and the ACLU agree on? Not much. But earlier this year, they announced they’d formed a broad coalition to invest millions of dollars in Criminal Justice Reform. Our next guest has some real concerns about that. A professor at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, Ruth Wilson Gilmore’s spent decades analyzing the political geography of prisons. Overcrowding and discrimination are bad, she says, but our broken system’s the result of decisions that go way deeper -- to the nature of our economy itself. Among her many publications is the prize-winning book Golden Gulag: Prisons, Surplus, Crisis, and Opposition in Globalizing California. She was also a founding member of the anti-prison group Critical Resist...

I can still remember The first time I saw him Silver-haired old man Even then
But we hit it off together And fished old Paynee River Through the years I'm proud to say Luther was my friend
They all called him crazy Said his mind was simple They even talked of puttin' him away
But he wouldn't hurt nobody And I hated all the town folk The way they treated Luther And the game they used to play
They said, "Luther here's a dollar Luther here's a quarter Take either one you want, old man Which one will it be"
Then they'd all hoop and holler And he never took the dollar He'd take the shiny quarter Smile and walk away
I watched him growin' older And I finally gave up countin' The times they made him play That awful game
Till one day he lay a-dyin' And I was sittin' by him He said "Boy, before before I go There's somethin' to explain"
"I know you've always wondered Why I just took their quarters And now, son You're old enough to understand"
"But you see, the way I had it figured Was never take that dollar The day you do, boy The money game will end"
They said, "Luther, here's a dollar Luther, here's a quarter Take either one you want, old man Which one will it be"
Then they'd all hoop and holler But he never took the dollar He'd take the shiny quarter Smile and walk away
Now Luther lay a-sleepin' In the ground down by the river Lord knows I miss that old black man
But twenty sacks of quarters And the wisdom of his thinkin' Have made my life much easier Than I had ever planned
Well, I often go to see him And I place a paper dollar And a brand new shiny quarter On his grave
And I feel my body shiver As a cool breeze from the river Blows that paper bill up through the trees And far away
Luther, here's a dollar Luther, here's a quarter Take either one you want, old man Which one will it be
He lived and died in squalor And he still won't take the dollar But there's a pile of quarters Heaped high on Luther's grave
Luther, here's a dollar Luther, here's a quarter Take either one you want, old man Which one will it be
Yes, they'd all hoop and holler And he never took the dollar He'd take the shiny quarter Smile and walk away
Luther, here's a dollar Luther, here's a quarter Take either one you want, old man Which one will it be
