William Harrison "Bill" Withers, Jr. (born July 4, 1938) is an American singer-songwriter and musician who performed and recorded from 1970 until 1985. He recorded several major hits, including "Lean on Me", "Ain't No Sunshine", "Use Me", "Just the Two of Us", "Lovely Day", and "Grandma's Hands". Withers won three Grammy Awards and was nominated for four more. His life was the subject of the 2009 documentary film Still Bill. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.
Withers was born the youngest of six children in the small coal-mining town of Slab Fork, West Virginia. He was born with a stutter and has said he had a hard time fitting in. Raised in nearby Beckley, he was thirteen years old when his father died. Withers enlisted with the United States Navy at the age of 18 and served for nine years, during which time he got over his stutter and became interested in singing and writing songs. Discharged from the Navy in 1965, he relocated to Los Angeles in 1967 for a musical career. Withers worked as an assembler for several different companies, including Douglas Aircraft Corporation, while recording demo tapes with his own money, shopping them around and performing in clubs at night. When he debuted with the song "Ain't No Sunshine" he refused to resign from his job because of his belief that the music business was a fickle industry.
"Ain't No Sunshine" is a song by Bill Withers from his 1971 album Just As I Am, produced by Booker T. Jones. The record featured musicians Donald "Duck" Dunn on bass guitar, Al Jackson, Jr. on drums and Stephen Stills on guitar. String arrangements were done by Booker T. Jones, and recorded in Memphis by engineer Terry Manning. The song is in natural minor.
The song was released as a single in September 1971, becoming a breakthrough hit for Withers, reaching number six on the U.S. R&B Chart and number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Billboard ranked it as the No. 23 song for 1971.
Withers was inspired to write this song after watching the 1962 movie Days of Wine and Roses. He explained, in reference to the characters played by Lee Remick and Jack Lemmon, "They were both alcoholics who were alternately weak and strong. It's like going back for seconds on rat poison. Sometimes you miss things that weren't particularly good for you. It's just something that crossed my mind from watching that movie, and probably something else that happened in my life that I'm not aware of."

The withers is the ridge between the shoulder blades of a four-legged mammal. In many species it is the tallest point of the body, and in horses and dogs it is the standard place to measure the animal's height (in contrast, cattle are normally measured to the top of the hips).
The withers in horses are formed by the dorsal spinal processes of roughly the 3rd through 11th thoracic vertebrae (most horses have 18 thoracic vertebrae), which are unusually long in this area. The processes at the withers can be more than 12 inches (30 cm) long.
Since they do not move relative to the ground (as the horse's head does), the withers are used as the measuring point for the height of a horse. Horses are commonly measured in hands – one hand is 4 inches (10.16 cm). Horse heights are extremely variable, from small pony breeds to large draft breeds. The height at the withers of an average Thoroughbred is 16 hands (64 inches, 163 cm), and ponies are up to 14.2 hands (58 inches, 147 cm).

Plot: Bill Withers (Timothy J. Cox) is a man who seems to have it all. A good wife, two swell kids and a high paying job, but today no one close to him seems to remember his birthday. Feeling down and out from this snub, Bill seems convinced that another birthday will pass without mention. But then his loyal secretary Jane, who is the only one to remember his birthday, has a great big surprise in store for him.

Bill Withers - Ain't No Sunshine (Live 1972)
Lotta folks of all different nationalities and thangs, come up to me and say, "I dug my Grandmother, too." And I remember, the first responsibility I ever had was to take care of my Grandmother, make sure she got everywhere OK. And at that time I was maybe 5 or 6 years old. And the most I could ov done was let her fall on me if she decided to fall. But it was a hip job, becos Grandma never went no where but the Church. And it wasn't one of them sad churches, where they sing them songs and make you wish you could just hurry up and die and get it over with. One a them kind of "Lead me on...", no, no.... Grandma them had one a them churches where they sung "If you wanna help me Jesus, it's alright. If you wanna help me Jesus, it's alright". And at the funeral they used to have to tie the c...

The unassuming highlight of the film (Still Bill) finds Withers and daughter Kori (an extraordinary vocalist and songstress in her own right) in a hotel lobby singing through a previously unheard song, 'A Telephone Call Away.' Withers' pensive piano work and perfectly unpretentious lyrics resonate in the acoustics of the rooms vaulted ceiling. The song reaches it's climax when Kori Withers joins in for a down right, gut-bucket yet effortlessly beautiful bridge. This song has recently seen release on George Benson's latest Songs and Stories as a duet with the deep and dulcet-toned Lalah Hathaway. While the song's beauty is still undeniable, for me, you can't beat Bill and Kori Withers in a hotel lobby on a quiet afternoon.

Bill Withers (born July 4, 1938) is an American vocalist and hall-of-fame songwriter who performed and recorded from 1970 until 1985. Some of his best-known songs are "Ain't No Sunshine," "Use Me," "Lovely Day," "Lean on Me", "Grandma's Hands", and "Just the Two of Us". Bill Withers was born the youngest of nine children in the small coal-mining town of Slab Fork, West Virginia. Raised in nearby Beckley, West Virginia, he was thirteen when his father died. He joined the United States Navy at eighteen and served for nine years, during which time he became interested in singing. He began writing songs to fill a need for lyrics that expressed what he felt. Following his discharge from the Navy in 1965, he moved to Los Angeles in 1967 to pursue a career in music. Subscribe to the podcast: http://www.wnyc.org/shows/deathsexmoney/ Maybe it's not manly to say, "I'm scared." But for Bill Withers, being a man isn't about ignoring fear. It's about getting things done in spite of it, and knowing when to ask for help. Before he wrote some of the most memorable hits of the 70s and 80s—songs like "Ain't No Sunshine," and "Lean on Me"—Withers was a stuttering boy in a poor mining town.

It's got something to do with the weather
That I'm feeling the way that I do
And It's got something to do with the time of my life
it's got something to do with you
It's got something to do with the feeling
That we get when we do what we do
And it's got something to do with your oop-shoo-be-do
And it's got something to do with you
You've got the stuff to pick me up
You've got the stuff to pick me up
You got the stuff, can't get enough
You've got the stuff to pick me up
Deep inside I don't want to hide my feelings
And I just gotta tell you that I love you
Got that little movement in your hip (so in love with you)
Got that lil pucker in your lip (don't know what to do)
Get that 'lil twinkle in your eye (that's the reason why)
Gonna find it hard to pass you by
It's got something to do with being peaceful
No regrets, just a memory or two
And it's got something to do with your oop-shoo-be-do
And it's got something to do with you
You've got the stuff to pick me up
You've got the stuff to pick me up
You got the stuff, can't get enough
