Paul Kagame (/kəˈɡɑːmeɪ/ kə-GAH-may; born 23 October 1957) is the sixth and current President of Rwanda having taken office in 2000 when his predecessor, Pasteur Bizimungu, resigned. Kagame previously commanded the rebel force that ended the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. He was considered Rwanda's de facto leader when he served as Vice President and Minister of Defence from 1994 to 2000.
Kagame was born to a Tutsi family in southern Rwanda. When he was two years old, the Rwandan Revolution ended centuries of Tutsi political dominance; his family fled to Uganda, where he spent the rest of his childhood. In the 1980s, Kagame fought in Yoweri Museveni's rebel army, becoming a senior Ugandan army officer after Museveni's military victories carried him to the Ugandan presidency. Kagame joined the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), which invaded Rwanda in 1990; leader Fred Rwigyema died early in the war and Kagame took control. By 1993, the RPF controlled significant territory in Rwanda and a ceasefire was negotiated. The assassination of Rwandan President Juvénal Habyarimana was the starting point of the genocide, in which Hutu extremists killed an estimated 500,000 to one million Tutsi and moderate Hutu. Kagame resumed the civil war, and ended the genocide with a military victory.
This is a list of Presidents of Rwanda since the formation of the post of President of Rwanda in 1961, to the present day.
A total of four people have served as President of Rwanda (not counting two Acting Presidents).
(Dates in italics indicate de facto continuation of office)
A president is the leader of a country or a division or part of a country, typically a republic, a democracy, or a dictatorship. The title "president" is sometimes used by extension for leaders of other groups, including corporate entities.
Etymologically, a president is one who presides (from Latin prae- "before" + sedere "to sit"; giving the term praeses). Originally, the term referred to the presiding officer of a ceremony or meeting (i.e., chairman), but today it most commonly refers to an executive official. Among other things, "President" today is a common title for the heads of state of most republics, whether presidential republics, semi-presidential republics or parliamentary republics.
The title President is derived from the Latin prae- "before" + sedere "to sit." As such, it originally designated the officer who presides over or "sits before" a gathering and ensures that debate is conducted according to the rules of order (see also chairman and speaker). Early examples are from the universities of Oxford and Cambridge (from 1464) and the founding President of the Royal Society William Brouncker in 1660. This usage survives today in the title of such offices as "President of the Board of Trade" and "Lord President of the Council" in the United Kingdom, as well as "President of the Senate" (one of the roles constitutionally assigned to the Vice-President of the United States). The officiating priest at certain Anglican religious services, too, is sometimes called the "President" in this sense. However the most common modern usage is as the title of a head of state in a republic.
Rwanda (/ruːˈɑːndə/ or /ruːˈændə/ ( listen); Kinyarwanda: U Rwanda [u.ɾɡwanda]), officially the Republic of Rwanda (Kinyarwanda: Repubulika y'u Rwanda; French: République du Rwanda), is a sovereign state in central and east Africa and one of the smallest countries on the African mainland. Located a few degrees south of the Equator, Rwanda is bordered by Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Rwanda is in the African Great Lakes region and is highly elevated; its geography dominated by mountains in the west and savanna to the east, with numerous lakes throughout the country. The climate is temperate to subtropical, with two rainy seasons and two dry seasons each year.

Rwandan President Paul Kagame has Friday been sworn in for another seven-year term in office, in a colourful ceremony attended by dozens of African heads of state and world leaders, including President Uhuru Kenyatta. During the election held on August 4th, Kagame beat two other candidates including the main opposition leader Frank Habineza and independent candidate Philippe Mpayimana to win the election by 98% of the vote.
In Rwanda, presidential aspirant Diane Rwigara is arrested again and charged with planning a coup, just like Mrs. Victoire Ingabire, who was charged with terrorism and has been in prison for 7 years.
Rwandans are preparing to vote for their country's presidential election as campaigning comes to an end. Paul Kagame, the incumbent president and candidate for the ruling party, has gained massive popularity from both ethnic Tutsis and Hutus who recognise his leading role in boosting the country's economy. But more and more people are questioning his record on democracy amidst claims of a violent crackdown on opposition supporters in the run up to the election. Al Jazeera's Andrew Simmons reports from the capital Kigali. [August 8, 2010]

Paul Kagame responded to the Obama administrations criticism after a vote that could allow him to retain power until 2034, saying US attitude will not solve problems of Rwanda and that foreigners shouldn’t determine the destiny of Rwandans. More than 98% of Rwandans voted in an 18 December referendum to lift term limits and allow Kagame extend his time in power, possibly until 2034. A State Department spokesman said on Saturday the US is “deeply disappointed” by Kagame’s decision to run for re-election in 2017. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/jan/04/rwanda-president-paul-kagame-us-obama-third-term http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

(CNN) -- Rwandan President Paul Kagame hit back Monday at human rights activists who say he's behaving like an autocrat and fueling a bloody civil war in Rwanda's neighbor, Congo. "If you are talking about people in the human rights community from outside... I have an issue with this," Kagame said, 16 years after he was hailed as a hero for ending a genocide that killed at least 800,000 people. "You tend to make a judgment of a country, 11 million people, on what a couple of people have said and (they) don't take into account what Rwandans say." Kagame added, "Nobody has asked the Rwandans ... it's as if they don't matter in the eyes of the human rights people. It's our own decisions in the end." He said everyone in Rwanda has to play by the rules and be accountable. "There has...
