On Tuesday, November 14, Historic New England presents its twenty-third annual Book Prize and its eighth Prize for Collecting Works on Paper at the Lyman Estate in Waltham, Mass.
The 2017 Book Prize winner is Art & Industry in Early America: Rhode Island Furniture, 1650-1830 by Patricia E. Kane with contributions from Dennis Carr, Nancy Goyne Evans, Jennifer N. Johnson, and Gary R. Sullivan. The book is a comprehensive survey of furniture made in the Ocean State in the colonial and early Federal periods, with more than 200 illustrations of beautifully constructed and carved objects. Kane is the Friends of American Arts Curator of American Decorative Arts at Yale University Art Gallery. The 2017 Honor Books are A History of Boston in 50 Artifacts by Joseph M. Bagley and Maine Photography: A History, 1840-2015 by Libby Bischof, Susan Danly, and Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr.
The 2017 Prize for Collecting Works on Paper goes to Eddie Woodin of Portland, Maine, who has built a one-of-a-kind collection of more than 700 original paintings of birds and a vast collection of ephemera about birds, especially pieces used to educate the American public about birds and bird conservation. He has been a generous lender to the Museum of American Bird Art at Mass Audubon, in particular for the 2014 exhibition Painting Birds to Save Them: The Critical Role of Art in the Bird Conservation Movement.
The public is invited to celebrate the winners at An Evening of Prizes: Historic New England Honors Authors and Collectors, Tuesday, November 14, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Historic New England’s Lyman Estate, 185 Lyman Street, Waltham, Mass.
