An EP (short for extended play) is a musical recording that contains more music than a single, but is usually too short to qualify as a full studio album or LP. The term EP originally referred to specific types of vinyl records other than 78 rpm standard play (SP) records and LP records, but it is now applied to mid-length compact discs and music downloads as well. Ricardo Baca of The Denver Post said, "EPs—originally extended-play 'single' releases that are shorter than traditional albums—have long been popular with punk and indie bands." In the United Kingdom, the Official Chart Company defines a boundary between EP and album classification at 25 minutes of length or four tracks (not counting alternative versions of featured songs, if present).
EPs were released in various sizes in different eras. The earliest multi-track records, issued around 1919 by Grey Gull Records, were vertically cut 78 rpm discs known as "2-in-1" records. These had finer than usual grooves, like Edison Disc Records. By 1949, when the 45 rpm single and 331⁄3 rpm LP were competing formats, seven-inch 45 rpm singles had a maximum playing time of only about four minutes per side.

Liz Larner (born 1960, Sacramento, California, United States) is an American installation artist and sculptor living and working in Los Angeles.
Larner was born in Sacramento, California in 1960. In 1985, she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the California Institute of Arts, Valencia, where she had studied with John Baldessari.
Larner's work is regarded to have much in common with the late 1960s and early 1970s sculptures of Eva Hesse and Jackie Winsor.
In her early work, Larner examined issues of transformation and decay in a series of petri dish cultures that she also photographed. Her subsequent installations and sculptures address the way an object defines the space it occupies and transforms the viewer's perception of that space. Damage Control (1987) is a two-foot-square block of hazardous substances. Its list of materials includes saltpeter (an ingredient in gunpowder), ammonium nitrate (used in the Oklahoma City bombing) and TNT itself.Used to Do the Job (1987) consists of two rough-hewn cubes stacked on top of each other; the bottom one is made of solid lead, the top one of almost solid wax and paraffin - suspended within are all the ingredients needed to make a time bomb.
Julie Mehretu (born 1970 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) is an artist, best known for her densely layered abstract paintings and prints. She lives and works in New York City. Mehretu shares her New York studio with her partner, the artist Jessica Rankin.
Mehretu was born in Ethiopia, in 1970, the first child of an Ethiopian college professor and an American teacher. They fled the country in 1977 and moved to East Lansing, Michigan, for her father’s teaching position at Michigan State University. A graduate of East Lansing High School, Mehretu received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and did a junior year abroad at Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD) in Dakar, Senegal, then attended the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island, where she earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1997. She moved to New York in 1999. Mehretu's mother-in-law is Australian author and poet Lily Brett.
Mehretu is known for her large-scale paintings and drawings and her technique of layering different elements and media. Her paintings are built up through layers of acrylic paint on canvas overlaid with mark-making using pencil, pen, ink and thick streams of paint. Her canvases overlay different architectural features such as columns, façades and porticoes with different geographical schema such as charts, building plans and city maps and architectural renderings for stadiums, international airports, and other public gathering hubs, seen from different perspectives, at once aerial, cross-section and isometric. Her drawings are preparatory to her large paintings, and sometimes interim between paintings.
The Sunset Strip is the name given to the mile-and-a-half (2.4 km) stretch of Sunset Boulevard that passes through West Hollywood, California. It extends from West Hollywood's eastern border with Hollywood at Havenhurst Drive, to its western border with Beverly Hills at Sierra Drive. The Strip is probably the best-known portion of Sunset, embracing boutiques, restaurants, rock clubs, and nightclubs that are on the cutting edge of the entertainment industry. It is also known for its trademark array of huge, colorful billboards.
As the Strip lies outside of the Los Angeles city limits and was an unincorporated area under the jurisdiction of the County of Los Angeles, the area fell under the less-vigilant jurisdiction of the Sheriff's Department rather than the heavy hand of the LAPD. It was illegal to gamble in the city, but legal in the county. This fostered the building of a rather wilder concentration of nightlife than Los Angeles would tolerate, and in the 1920s a number of nightclubs and casinos moved in along the Strip, which attracted movie people to this less-restricted area; alcohol was served in back rooms during Prohibition.

Member of the Crested Butte Ski Patrol, Ellie Atkins spends her entire winter on the mountain and in her outerwear. Her days start early and consist of everything from rope work to throwing charges to keep the mountain safe in ever changing conditions. Wear and tear on gear is expected, so Ellie and the rest of the patrol depend on repair (quick duct tape jobs and long-term solutions) to keep them on the mountain.
They start them young in mountain towns. Mac Anderson is three years old and is already linking turns on a snowboard. You can spot him on the mountain in his red Patagonia jacket that has been passed around the Anderson family for 13 years now. With plenty of years left in the coat, you know it'll be given to the next in line when Mac grows out of the coat and into the bonafide ripper he's destined to become.
Larkin Poe is fronted by two immensely talented musicians and sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell. Both are accomplished players, having started as Classical prodigies at a young age. Both are equally accomplished singers and songwriters. Their music blends an amalgam of blues, rock, alt-country and folk into a Southern gumbo that will have you run a gamut of emotion and exhilaration usually reserved for bands with twice the years under their belt. Articulate, talented, beautiful young women who rock...what more could you ask for? This is one of the most memorable sessions of 2014, a year that was filled with exceptional and memorable sessions.

A short documentary on the resurgence of vinyl records in popularity. A DRC production.
Episode #252: Shown working on two site-specific paintings for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), Julie Mehretu recontextualizes the history of American landscape painting by merging its sublime imagery with the harsh realities not depicted. "What does it mean to paint a landscape and be an artist in this political moment?" she asks from the decommissioned Harlem church used as her studio for the project. Referencing the ways that landscapes have been politicized through historical events—from the violent expansion of the American West, colonialism, war, and abolition, through to more recent race riots and social protests—Mehretu began by combining photographs from these events with nineteenth-century landscape paintings. Abstracting and digitizing the blended forms, she pri...

Episode #253: In her Los Angeles studio, Tala Madani shares the crucial role that sketchbooks play in her painting practice. A way for the artist to both experiment with potential compositions and quickly record an idea during a moment of inspiration, Madani’s sketchbooks serve as a visual archive of her paintings—those already realized as well as possible future works. Fascinated with the seventeenth-century idea that paintings have souls, Madani describes how her finished works differ from her sketches in their materiality. "It’s more about how do you use the material to help you communicate the idea clearer," says the artist. "If there's drips happening, I really engage those drips into bringing the audience quite close to where I am." Tala Madani skewers stereotypes in her sharply s...

Episode #250: Strolling through the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Liz Larner discusses her interest in separating color from form in her sculptural work. Using Minimalist sculptor Tony Smith's large-scale geometric piece "Smoke" (1967) as a starting point, Larner shares her personal love for the sculpture, currently installed in the atrium of the museum's Ahmanson Building. "Just to see what sculpture can do," says the artist, "this I think is probably one of the greatest examples of that ever." Smith's work functions as both an investigation of abstracted geometric forms and an activation of the spatial voids surrounding the piece. Larner sees her own work as a continuation of this idea, with one notable difference: color. "Color, it's such a huge part of our perception," says the...
Episode #247: From his Chicago studio, Theaster Gates reflects on the various collections he has acquired and created artworks with, including the Jet magazine archives and the inventory of an entire hardware store. In addition to serving as source material for the artist, the collections provide Gates with insight into how one person or institution sees the world. “It's like this little time capsule of things that were important to someone,” he says. The majority of the collections come from his immediate surroundings on Chicago’s South Side. “How do you catalog the everyday, especially as the phenomena of the everyday is changing?” Gates asks, “And is this another way of tracking Black space?” The materials function as an archive when shown in their original state, or they can be amal...

Matthew Stubbs & The Antiguas are a throwback to a style that defined a musical generation. Mid-century style left a lasting impression on everything pop-culture. The music was forward thinking, "space-age" and pushed the boundaries with a host of great instrumental artists from Martin Denny and Ennio Morricone to great bands like the Ventures and Booker T. and The MG's. There's no one out there right now that blends authentic mid-century style and modern rock music better than Matthew Stubbs and the Antiguas. Stubbs is in a league of his own when it comes to writing in the true instrumental pop traditions of the lounge-exotica-jazz-rock masters. Replacing Ken Clark on the Hammond B3 is Justin Toles armed with a vintage Farfisa organ he plays the equal to Matt Stubbs always incredible guit...

Season 8 of The Extended Play Sessions kicks off with the soulful strut of John Nemeth and his band The Blue Dreamers with Danny banks on drums, Johnny Rhodes on guitar and Matthew Wilson on bass and guitar. Nemeth's follow up to 2014's brilliant 'Memphis Grease' is called "Feelin Freaky" and it's probably his most fluid and freestyle album to date. This is John's second time on The Extended Play Sessions and hopefully not his last! Check out the other shows on YouTube Extended Play Sessions or extendedplaysessions.com.

Roberto Morbioli hails from Verona, Italy but over two hundred dates a year around Europe and North America he's becoming fairly well known in the "real" blues circles. An incendiary player with a booming, soulful voice and a powerful stage presence is the trademark of this brilliant musician. Joined by two of Boston's best, Jesse Williams on bass and John Medeiros Jr. on drums Roberto rips through a set of explosive blues for The Extended Play Sessions filmed at The Fallout Shelter on November 18th.
It's been more than two decades since Paul Kelly has toured North America with a full band but with a new album, 'Life is Fine,' in tow Paul set out to let us all know life is indeed fine. The monumental Australian singer/songwriter/musician and civil rights advocate is one of Down Under's most treasured musicians with over 20 albums to his credit and a place as one of the most respected songwriters of his generation. His band was remarkable on September 21, 2017 at The Fallout Shelter as they made a rare 'small venue' stop to film The Extended Play Sessions. The backing vocal duo comprised of sisters Vika and Linda Bull were masterful in their own opportunities to take the lead as well as backing Paul on most of the set. The band flowed with ease and grace through the songs most of which ...
Telling stories through music is part of every culture on earth. It cannot be contained by religion or politics or tyranny. Sultans of String is as much a musical collaboration as it is a cultural celebration of the joy of music, culture and story telling. Their music exudes a vision of peace, acceptance, love and understanding that through music we can bridge differences and come together without fear or skepticism. While the Sultans of String take on many forms they ventured in to The Extended Play Sessions as a trio comprised of three virtuoso players with diverse ethnic backgrounds. Violinist and vocalist Chris McKhool, guitarist and vocalist Kevin Laliberté and vocalist and sitar master Anwar Khurshid ventured in to The Extended Play Sessions Fallout Shelter in May to promote the rela...
Austin, TX based Garrett Lebeau Band arrived at the Fallout Shelter a virtual unknown in New England and left a full house full of fans on a Monday evening in October 2016. His melodic blends of blues and soul combine with crafty songwriting and a brilliant quartet of musicians that pull it off with authenticity and originality. A deep thinker with an old soul, Garrett Lebeau came late to the musicians party, only discovering music as a young man, but more than making up for lost time forging his way to becoming a formidable force. Joined by Ryan Howard on keyboards, Ben Geise on bass and John Duran on the drums this is one of the most surprising and memorable nights at the beloved Fallout Shelter.

"...the musicians I look up to and the one's in this band all want to swing as hard as they can, all the time." Pete Anderson swings! The guitar legend has produced some of the most important recordings including k.d. Lang, Dwight Yoakam, Michelle Schocked and Roy Orbison but he's more interested in his own work nowadays...good thing too, because he's making some really great music with his own brand on it. Pete stopped in to Alternate Root TV studios in late 2013 to film these sessions. It's a swingin' show with monumental playing and poignant dialogue.
