Social business/entrepreneurship as a pathway for improving youth wellbeing and sustainable development

Baucau, May 12, 2017 - The road rehabilitation project at Buruma village was officially commissioned by UNDP in partnership with the Ministry of State Administration (MSA), the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Environment (MCIE), the Ministry of Public Works and International Labour Organization (ILO) Road for Development (R4D) Team.

On the 21st and 22nd of June, UNDP and the Legal and Judicial Training Centre hosted a one-and-a-half-day workshop on the legal framework of the upcoming national parliamentary elections.

Dili, 22 May 2017 – The Global Conference on the 2030 Agenda: A Roadmap for SDGs in Fragile and Conflict-affected States” was officially opened today by the President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste H.E. Mr. Francisco Guterres “Lu Olo”.

A delegation comprised of representatives from the Government of Timor-Leste and UNDP visited Lao PDR on February 6-10, 2017 to exchange experiences on the planning and implementation of climate resilient rural infrastructure.

Eugenia Maria Imaculada cheered as the national leaders symbolically inaugurated the new water facility in Binagua, Baucau Municipality. “Before, we had to walk for 1km to fetch water. We are very happy now because the water is very close to us. We don’t have to carry the heavy bucket of water for hours anymore,” said Eugenia.

Timor-Leste is the youngest nation in Asia Pacific Region with a population characterized as one of the most youthful in the world. Timor-Leste’s 4th NHDR is a collaborative project between the Government of Timor-Leste, UNDP and Flinders University, Australia.

The Government of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have signed a Cost-sharing Agreement for an amount of 125,000 US Dollars for the procurement of the indelible ink through Electoral Project- LEARN for upcoming national elections.

The UNDP “Strengthening Governance and Service Delivery project of PNTL” supported PNTL’s district command in Ermera in conducting a workshop on election security on 28 February 2017 in Gleno, Ermera. The theme of the workshop was “Hametin Unidade no Asegura Estabilidade Eleisaun 2017 iha Municipiu Ermera (Strengthening Unity and Guarantee the Stability for 2017 Election in Ermera Municipality)”. The workshop was realized through the coordination of PNTL Command, the Catholic parishes in Ermera, and UNDP, with the support of the Government of Japan.

On 12 January, ‘Improved Cookstoves (ICS) Sharing and Learning Workshop’ funded by UNDP was held at Fundasaun Oriente in Dili. The workshop was organized by Mercy Corps, implementing partner of UNDP-GEF supported Biomass Project.

The Building Shoreline Resilience of Timor-Leste to Protect Local Communities and Their Livelihoods (Coastal Resilience) project is designed to strengthen resilience of coastal communities through the introduction of nature-based restoration approaches to coastal ecosystem, mainly mangroves.

13 December 2016 - The United Nations (UN) in Timor-Leste organized a half-day media briefing on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which was adopted unanimously by 193 UN member states in 2015. The objective was to share information about the work of UN in Timor-Leste and the new Agenda 2030. Most importantly, the goal was to discuss the role that journalism can play in supporting Timor-Leste to achieve the 17 Goals for Sustainable Development by 2030.

Since the start of the project in March 2016, great milestones have been achieved towards the preparation of Timor-Leste’s 4th National Human Development Report (NHDR). Human Development Reports are flagship products commissioned by the UNDP with the intention that they are produced independently and owned both nationally and regionally.

The UNDP project entitled Leveraging Electoral Assistance for Regionalized Nation-Building (LEARN), funded by the Government of Japan and Korea.

Dili, 5 December 2016, The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Republic of Korea is launching a new programme of electoral and legal assistance of over US$3 million on “Electoral and Legal Assistance for Social Inclusion focusing on Youth and Women in Timor-Leste 2016-2018.”

Dili, 16-18 November, 2016 – The United Nations Development Programmes (UNDP) in partnership with the Office of the Prime Minister organised a three-day Social Business Camp for Timorese youth. The aim is to encourage and equip participants with skills and confidence to start their own business.

At the fifth Responsible Business Forum, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today called on business leaders to take a greater role in the new development era in order to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This Forum, opened in Singapore by UNDP and Global Initiatives, aims to address a sea change in the nature of development funding by creating a new partnership for sustainable development.

While foreign funding (Official Development Assistance) is still essential for the development system, it now accounts for 0.7 percent of total financial flows in Asia-Pacific (down from 13.5 percent in 1990), while domestic public and private finance accounts for 89 percent, according to a UNDP report launched last month.

It is one year since every country in the world signed up to the Sustainable Development Goals. They form a blueprint for addressing the most significant challenges facing our planet and its people. Challenges like climate change. This is likely to be the hottest year on record and here in Asia, climate change is a cause of the natural disasters that have claimed half a million lives in the last decade. Challenges like inequality, which has been growing for four-fifths of Asia-Pacific’s population over the last 20 years. Challenges brought on by the accelerating process of ageing, which will make it harder for many Asian states to provide basic services to their people. The 17 SDGs will address these challenges and other interlinked issues, including education, hunger and security. But governments cannot implement this blueprint on their own. Nor can the UN and other development organizations.

Bobonaro, 26 October 2016, the United National Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with the Ministry of Interior (MoI) launched the construction of climate resilient water infrastructure for community in Daudo, Cailaco, Bobonaro municipality who are currently living under water stressed conditions.

ASIA'S YOUNGEST COUNTRY The economy of Timor-Leste has grown rapidly since the founding of the country in 2002. Timor-Leste is extremely mountainous. Before these roads were built, the majority of Timorese lived in isolation, far from towns and foreign influences, tied to their fields and animistic practices. Now, things are changing. Despite of their remote location, many communities are more connected than before.

Timor-Leste is blessed with a large portion of young people where 73% of the total population is under the age of 35. The youth are the future decision makers, leaders, and important actors in the socio-economic and political life. If they are educated, skilled and employed within an environment where they fulfil their potentials and aspirations, they can transform this small nation economically. The role of youth in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in Timor-Leste is highly important. Within this context, UNDP together with the Government of Timor-Leste has organized a series of events targeting the youth to talk about social entrepreneurship, well-being and Sustainable Development Goals where the role of media and ICT is explored.

After fourteen years of independence, Timor-Leste welcomes development and shows progress in peace, stability and economic development. A smooth government transition in 2015 is a further signal of the country’s readiness to move forward.
