The Cove begins in Taiji, Japan, where former dolphin trainer Ric OBarry has come to set things right after a long search for redemption. In the 1960s, it was OBarry who captured and trained the 5 dolphins who played the title character in the international television sensation Flipper.
But his close relationship with those dolphins the very dolphins who sparked a global fascination with trained sea mammals that continues to this day -- led OBarry to a radical change of heart. One fateful day, a heartbroken Barry came to realize that these deeply sensitive, highly intelligent and self-aware creatures so beautifully adapted to life in the open ocean must never be subjected to human captivity again. This mission has brought him to Taiji, a town that appears to be devoted to the wonders and mysteries of the sleek, playful dolphins and whales that swim off their coast.
But in a remote, glistening cove, surrounded by barbed wire and Keep Out signs, lies a dark reality. It is here, under cover of night, that the fishermen of Taiji, driven by a multi-billion dollar dolphin entertainment industry and an underhanded market for mercury-tainted dolphin meat, engage in an unseen hunt. The nature of what they do is so chilling -- and the consequences are so dangerous to human health -- they will go to great lengths to halt anyone from seeing it.
Undeterred, OBarry joins forces with filmmaker Louis Psihoyos and the Oceanic Preservation Society to get to the truth of whats really going on in the cove and why it matters to everyone in the world. With the local Chief of Police hot on their trail and strong-arm fishermen keeping tabs on them, they will recruit an Ocean's Eleven-style team of underwater sound and camera experts, special effects artists, marine explorers, adrenaline junkies and world-class free divers who will carry out an undercover operation to photograph the off-limits cove, while playing a cloak-and-dagger game with those who would have them jailed. The result is a provocative mix of investigative journalism, eco-adventure and arresting imagery that adds up to an urgent plea for hope.

The Cove (film)
The Cove is a 2009 documentary film directed by Louie Psihoyos which analyzes and questions dolphin hunting practices in Japan. It was awarded the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2010. The film is a call to action to halt mass dolphin kills, change Japanese fishing practices, and to inform and educate the public about the risks, and increasing hazard, of mercury poisoning from dolphin meat. The film is told from an ocean conservationist's point of view. The film highlights the fact that the number of dolphins killed in the Taiji dolphin drive hunting is several times greater than the number of whales killed in the Antarctic, and asserts that 23,000 dolphins and porpoises are killed in Japan every year by the country's whaling industry. The migrating dolphins are herded into a cove where they are netted and killed by means of spears and knives over the side of small fishing boats. The film argues that dolphin hunting as practiced in Japan is unnecessary and cruel.

The Cove begins in Taiji, Japan, where former dolphin trainer Ric OBarry has come to set things right after a long search for redemption. In the 1960s, it was OBarry who captured and trained the 5 dolphins who played the title character in the international television sensation Flipper.
But his close relationship with those dolphins the very dolphins who sparked a global fascination with trained sea mammals that continues to this day -- led OBarry to a radical change of heart. One fateful day, a heartbroken Barry came to realize that these deeply sensitive, highly intelligent and self-aware creatures so beautifully adapted to life in the open ocean must never be subjected to human captivity again. This mission has brought him to Taiji, a town that appears to be devoted to the wonders and mysteries of the sleek, playful dolphins and whales that swim off their coast.
But in a remote, glistening cove, surrounded by barbed wire and Keep Out signs, lies a dark reality. It is here, under cover of night, that the fishermen of Taiji, driven by a multi-billion dollar dolphin entertainment industry and an underhanded market for mercury-tainted dolphin meat, engage in an unseen hunt. The nature of what they do is so chilling -- and the consequences are so dangerous to human health -- they will go to great lengths to halt anyone from seeing it.
Undeterred, OBarry joins forces with filmmaker Louis Psihoyos and the Oceanic Preservation Society to get to the truth of whats really going on in the cove and why it matters to everyone in the world. With the local Chief of Police hot on their trail and strong-arm fishermen keeping tabs on them, they will recruit an Ocean's Eleven-style team of underwater sound and camera experts, special effects artists, marine explorers, adrenaline junkies and world-class free divers who will carry out an undercover operation to photograph the off-limits cove, while playing a cloak-and-dagger game with those who would have them jailed. The result is a provocative mix of investigative journalism, eco-adventure and arresting imagery that adds up to an urgent plea for hope.

In Episode 2, we visit with Zen Del Rio and Edem Elesh, Los Angeles-based surfers and artists, as they talk about their connection to Palos Verdes Cove. Reach deeper into the roots of surfing in California, as Zen, Edem, and friends of the Palos Verdes Surfing Club take on a big swell at "PV Cove" while offering personal experience and historical references that continue to fuel their stoke. We are also taken into each artist's studio to discover how surfing affects their creative process, including insights into the boards they enjoy riding and a bit of "local knowledge."
STOKED! is a new film series by Eric Minh Swenson, director of Mana, that celebrates the spirit and love for California's beaches and passion for its heralded surfing culture. The series keeps in the tradition of preserving the rich heritage of Southern California's beach lifestyle which continues to influence art and culture throughout the world.
STOKED! is an open invitation to all beach-going enthusiasts and surfers to participate at pre-scheduled events throughout the year and various locations along California's coastline. The series of films will be posted online as the continuing Take 1 Art Series by EMS as part of the film survey that documents the art world throughout California.

It extends more than six hundred kilometres from north to south, is up to eighty kilometres wide and in some sections is over seven hundred metres deep.Cichlids, the living jewels of Lake Malawi, are highly sought after among aquatic fish enthusiasts. The brightly-coloured males achieve the highest prices in both Europe and the U.S.A. Diving just off the coast is like being in a gigantic aquarium and around a thousand species of dazzling cichlids inhabit the rocky reefs around various islands. It is not necessary to dive deep to observe the Malawi cichlids as the most colourful varieties are to be found just below the surface. In the depths, strange craters rise from the muddy seabed. Some have a diameter of more than two metres and are one metre high. They are not volcanoes but the leks of male cichlids. The tiny fish spend months building the leks so as to make a good impression on passing females. Lake Malawi, the ‘Lake Of Stars’, is a paradise of nature where in 1980 the southern section became the first national park in the world to be used for the conservation of freshwater fish.

Halifax is part of Canada's federal state of Nova Scotia. The peninsula has a population of 333,000 and it is the country's oldest British settlement, yet has managed to retain all the charm and tranquility of a small town.
After Sydney, Halifax has the second largest harbor in the world and is one of the region's few harbors that is free from ice throughout the year.
Lobsters, oysters, mussels and fish soup are but a few of the menu items that appear in the seafood restaurants of the Atlantic District.
The Maritime Museum covers the history of the fishing industry on Canada's Atlantic coastline and also the history of navigation. Boats and small models illustrate the development of ship-building and include great seafarers and many remarkable exhibits.
In 1917, two ships collided in Halifax Harbor. This led to an explosion that destroyed half the city when 2,000 people perished and 9,000 were injured. In April 1912, the loss of the supposedly unsinkable passenger ship, the Titanic, was caused to its collision with an iceberg and it was from Halifax that the rescue ships embarked.
The famous train, The Ocean, embarks from close to the harbor and its impressive stainless steel carriages date back to the 1950s.
