The Iranian Revolution (also known as the Independence and Liberty Revolution or the 1979 Revolution;Persian: Enqelābe Esteqlāl wa Āzādi, 'Enqelābe Esteqlāl wa Āzādi') refers to events involving the overthrow of the Pahlavi dynasty under Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, who was supported by the United States and its eventual replacement with an National republic under the Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of the revolution, supported by various leftist and Islamic organizations and Iranian student movements.
Demonstrations against the Shah commenced in October 1977, developing into a campaign of civil resistance that included both secular and religious elements. and which intensified in January 1978. Between August and December 1978 strikes and demonstrations paralyzed the country. The Shah left Iran for exile on January 16, 1979, as the last Persian monarch, leaving his duties to a regency council and an opposition-based prime minister. Ayatollah Khomeini was invited back to Iran by the government, and returned to Tehran to a greeting by several million Iranians. The royal reign collapsed shortly after on February 11 when guerrillas and rebel troops overwhelmed troops loyal to the Shah in armed street fighting, bringing Khomeini to official power. Iran voted by national referendum to become an Islamic Republic on April 1, 1979, and to approve a new theocratic-republican constitution whereby Khomeini became Supreme Leader of the country, in December 1979.

A revolution (from the Latin revolutio, "a turn around") is a fundamental change in political power or organizational structures that takes place in a relatively short period of time when the population rises up in revolt against the current authorities. Aristotle described two types of political revolution:
Revolutions have occurred through human history and vary widely in terms of methods, duration, and motivating ideology. Their results include major changes in culture, economy, and socio-political institutions.
Scholarly debates about what does and does not constitute a revolution center on several issues. Early studies of revolutions primarily analyzed events in European history from a psychological perspective, but more modern examinations include global events and incorporate perspectives from several social sciences, including sociology and political science. Several generations of scholarly thought on revolutions have generated many competing theories and contributed much to the current understanding of this complex phenomenon.

In which John Green teaches you about Iran's Revolutions. Yes, revolutions plural. What was the1979 Iranian Revolution about? It turns out, Iran has a pretty long history of unrest in order to put power in the hands of the people, and the most recent revolution in 1979 was, at least at first, not necessarily about creating an Islamic state. It certainly turned out to be about that, but it was initially just about people who wanted to get rid of an oppressive regime. Listen up as John teaches you about Iran's long history of revolution. In 1953, the democratic government of Iran was overthrown in a US backed coup. In 1979, an Islamic revolution overthrew the Western friendly Shah. Today Iran is a main adversary to the United States and Europe. But it didn't have to be this way. In this video I explore two different scenarios, each with a drastic change to Iran's future. ___________ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/alternatehistoryhub Music by Holfix https://www.youtube.com/user/holfix

Please watch in HD!! This is a short video documentary about the Iranian Revolution of 1979. It is a summary about the major events of this revolution and how it changed Iran.
The events and conditions that lead to the revolution and its populist, nationalist and, later, Shi'a Islamic character include a conservative backlash against the Westernizing and secularizing efforts of the Western-backed Shah, a rise in expectations created by the 1973 oil revenue windfall and an overly ambitious economic program, anger over a short, sharp economic contraction in 1977–78, and other shortcomings of the previous regime. The Shah's regime became increasingly oppressive, brutal, corrupt, and extravagant.[33][35] It also suffered from basic functional failures that brought economic bottlenecks, shortages, and inflation.[36] The Shah was perceived by many as beholden to – if not a puppet of – a non-Muslim Western power (the United States)[37][38] whose culture was affecting ...
The modern history of Iran is mixed with intrigue and back channel politics of a much higher order. The CIA and US failed to prevent a theocracy from taking over during the Islamic revolution of Iran. The Islamic revolution of 1979 which ousted the last Shah of Iran has roots in the overthrow of the democratically elected Prime Minister, Mosadegh almost 30 years earlier. Many Iranians look favorably toward America, mostly due to a desire to have all the freedoms that America’s citizens enjoy. After visiting Iran in 2004, a New York Times columnist commented, “Finally, I’ve found a pro-American country” (We Are Iran, by Nasrin Alavi). Iranian people are exceptionally friendly and fulsome in their praise for the United States. President Bush said "being pro-American in Iran is a way t...
