South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa, is the southernmost sovereign state in Africa. It is bounded on the south by 2,798 kilometers of coastline of southern Africa stretching along the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans, on the north by the neighbouring countries of Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, and on the east by Mozambique and Swaziland, and surrounding the kingdom of Lesotho. South Africa is the 25th-largest country in the world by land area, and with close to 53 million people, is the world's 24th-most populous nation. It is the southernmost country on the mainland of the Old World or the Eastern Hemisphere.
South Africa is a multiethnic society encompassing a wide variety of cultures, languages, and religions. Its pluralistic makeup is reflected in the constitution's recognition of 11 official languages, which is among the highest number of any country in the world. Two of these languages are of European origin: Afrikaans developed from Dutch and serves as the first language of most white and coloured South Africans; English reflects the legacy of British colonialism, and is commonly used in public and commercial life, though it is fourth-ranked as a spoken first language.

Mine unions say there has been little improvement since then. South Africa's economy has long been driven by mining but production has dropped over the decades. Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News In the 1970s, South Africa was the world's most prolific exporter of gold. Over the years, industrial decline has seen widespread closures of the mines across the country. However, Johannesburg sits on the biggest gold basin ever discovered. It's perhaps not surprising that many of these abandoned mines have seen a recent boom in illegal mining activity. Everyday, hundreds of illegal gold miners, known as Zama Zamas, descend kilometers deep beneath the surface. The miners often spend weeks underground, toiling away at the country's untapped gold reserves. Observers have suggested that illegal mining is now so widespread, black-market gold arguably supports the communities once subsistent on the very same mines they worked...
AngloGold Ashanti's Mponeng gold mine, located south-west of Johannesburg in South Africa, is currently the deepest mine in the world. The operating depth at Mponeng mine ranged from between 2.4km to more than 3.9km below the surface by the end of 2012. Ongoing expansions have resulted in deeper digging at Mponeng, pushing the record to beyond the four kilometre mark.
Cape Town is preparing for the 2017 Mining Indaba. Industry players are wondering whether commodity prices will continue their upward trajectory. As Angelo Coppola explains, price fluctuations are not the only challenges confronting investors in commodities.

In a single gold mine in South Africa, an expected $2.2 billion worth of gold can still be extracted from just one dump site's waste material. Using water cannons and chemical treatements, a single mine can hope to extract about 3 grams in every tonne. It may not sound like much but if there is 140 million tonnes of waste lying around - the numbers start adding up. High prices means all the effort that goes into sourcing the precious metal may well be worth it. Al Jazeera's Tania Page reports from Johannesburg.
South Africa's TauTona mine, real life alchemy, and Halicephalobus Mephisto. Footage from the 2012 documentary, "Down to the Earth's Core". We have travelled into space and looked deep into the universe's depths, but the world beneath our feet remains unexplored and unseen. Now, that's about to change. For the first time in one epic unbroken shot, we embark on an impossible mission - using spectacular computer generated imagery to smash through three thousand miles of solid rock, and venture from our world into the underworld and on to the core of the Earth itself. It's a journey fraught with danger. One thousand feet down we find ourselves inside one of the planet's most volatile places - the San Andreas Fault. Caught between two huge rock slabs, we watch as stress builds and then ...

“Visions of Gold” is a short color film on “Gold! The thread from which we weave our dreams! The key to stability!” Produced by South African film maker Emil Nofal in the mid-1960s, the film opens with rows of gold bars as the narrator Joe Stewardson explains how (in1 885) itinerant prospectors George Walker, along with George Harrison, stumbled on surface outcrops of gold-rich conglomerate on an old farm near the Witwatersrand basin —land that is now near the center of Johannesburg. (Both men quickly sold their claims for the equivalent of a few hundred dollars. Today, the gold fields in the region are worth billions.) From across the world, prospectors descended on South Africa in search of gold, as we see throngs of prospectors and opportunists starting at mark 02:45. Spurred on by visi...

South Africa's mining industry and its labour issues has been thrust into the world spotlight ever since the Marikana Massacre in 2012. In 2014 the focus has been firmly on the issues of wages as well as work and safety conditions across the different mining sectors. TVC News Correspondent Marcelle Gordon picked the brain of a leading mining industry analyst about the role of government in the increasingly hostile relationship between mining companies and their workers.

South Africa became part of the BRICS group back in twenty ten and its clear to see why. From two thousand and two through to two thousand and eight, the country experienced annual growth averaging a tad under five percent per year and at times during that period it had teased the eight percent level giving a glimpse of the possibilities ahead. With vast natural resources such as gold, diamonds and platinum, excellent infrastructure and easy access to finance for business it had all the right ingredients in place for this trend to continue. The global recession hit hard however and, after a sharp contraction in the economy of six percent, it never really found its feet again. An increasingly corrupt government and high crime rates haven’t helped win foreign investment back into the region...

South Africa, a land of wonder and excitement; a place where you can walk amongst lions or ride a top great elephants – it truly is a land of adventure! Although there are endless activities that you can partake in, before embarking on a journey to this beautiful country, there are a few things to know to prepare you for the trip. Here are my top 5 tips on what to do in South Africa! 1) BE SAFE! Do not walk around at night. The crime rate in Cape Town is actually quite high so avoid putting yourself in compromising situations. In addition, if you’re a woman, this is incredibly important because the sexual assault and rape rates are also high so keep that in mind. Be safe. 2) GO ON A SAFARI! Do not leave South Africa without going on some kind of game drive/safari where you’ll get the ch...
✱ 641 Hotels in Cape Town - Lowest Price Guarantee ► http://goo.gl/pV0E1N Travel video about destination Cape Town Beach in South-Africa. During the days of apartheid, the Muizenberg beach was off limits to blacks. They could only go to beaches abandoned by the whites : beaches that were too dangerous, or shark-infested… After apartheid, a white man decided to initiate poor black kids in surfing, to get them off drugs. One pupil even became world champion, to the delight of the whole community. Social rifts still exist, however. The Camps Bay beach is for the wealthiest, obviously mostly white, whereas the blacks tend to go to the Muizenberg Beach. In the evening, however, they all frequent the bars, restaurants and clubs along the Camp Bay promenade. As violence is still prevalent in Sou...
The Republic of South Africa with its diversity and unmatched natural makings is often called "Rainbow Country". Scrublands full of game, beaches inviting for a swim, sky-high mountains, picturesque lakes and cities of historic heritage make up the appeal of the country. Conservated territories, botanic gardens and Africa's most famous wine-producing territory make up the Cape Peninsula. In Pilanesberg reservation you can meet wild animals in their natural habitat: lions, elephants, giraffes, leopards. Sun City expects the visitors with hotels, casino, aquapark, golf courses and a theme park. The Lesedi Cultural Village present...

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News The high walls, electric fences, and private security guards surrounding South Africa's residences and businesses are as inherent to the country's landscape as Table Mountain is to Cape Town. And with good reason — South Africa's 2012-2013 crime statistics were the worst in a decade, with increases in murder, attempted murder, violent armed robbery, and carjackings. Fear of crime has led to a boom in South Africa's private security industry since apartheid ended 20 years ago. The field's quick expansion is largely a result of continued social and economic inequality, increased violence, and inept police forces. VICE News traveled to South Africa's mother city Cape Town to look at the lifestyle gap between those who can an...

Cape Town South Africa Tourist guide to the city. "Downloadble Guide coming soon I know what I said in video haha" Cape Town, South Africa is arguably the most visually stunning place in the world. The cost of living in Cape Town is quite good to say the least! While I was visiting as a tourist, it didn’t stop me from going deeper to learn more about the culture and history. And there's a lot of deep, complex history in South Africa, especially in regards to race relations. Being Black myself, I had a lot of questions and I got a lot different answers. I could do a whole video on just the topic, but I will save that for another video. The one thing I did hear often was that there is progress being made. Rene and I took the opportunity to explore this amazing city in the shor...

Once an ANC activist, he now works tirelessly to prepare for impending catastrophe in the Rainbow Nation. Simon lives in Johannesburg and is the proud father of many children. Next, Simon tells us about life in post-apartheid South Africa. He explains that, in the 22 years since South Africa become Democratic, there has been a massive explosion in crime – in particular, violence against White farmers. When the world looked to South Africa for the World Cup in the summer of 2010, the filmmakers of this moving documentary explored the shocking levels of child rape and sexual abuse. In a country where a child is raped every three minutes, and where AIDS continues to spread with epidemic ferocity, we follow four girls aged 11-13 as they struggle to come to terms with the crimes committed against them and fight the social stigma that comes with the abuse. - One in four men in South Africa admit they have raped - A girl born in South Africa has a one in three chance of completing secondary education, and a one in four chance of being raped - Around 200,000 children a year are raped in South Africa - 62% of South African secondary schoolboys believe forcing someone to have sex is not an ac...

Once I was anothers lover
Now I am my own
Trying to call myself a brother
Living here alone
Maybe if you came to see me
Wishing I wasn't so blind
Sitting here thinking to be free
Maybe we'd all change our mind
She is kind and beautiful
I am young and strong
We have never met each other
But it can't be long
Oft' I have slept by her window
Often I whisper her name
And wonder that words in the wind blow
