Water is vital for all known forms of life. It covers 71% of the Earth’s surface, with most of that water found in seas and oceans. Only 2.5% of the Earth’s water is freshwater (and nearly all of that water is in ice or deep underground). The fresh water we use each day from local reservoirs or rainwater tanks is actually as old as the hills – maybe even older! When learning about sustainability and water, topics could include:

  • The Water Cycle
  • Weather Patterns
  • Water Conservation
  • Litter and WaterWay Pollution
  • Water ‘Footprint’ of a Product eg. Agriculture
  • Water Ecosystems
  • Safe Drinking Water

Because we have recently experienced drought, many Australians know how to conserve water but many don’t understand weather patterns and how/why a drought is caused. There’s not much that we can do to change the cycle of floods and droughts, but we can take better care of our catchments and teach families how to conserve water.
