Sorbian languages
The Sorbian languages (Serbsce, Serbski) are two closely related languages spoken by the Sorbs, a Slavic minority in the Lusatia region of eastern Germany. They are classified under the West Slavic branch of the Indo-European languages. Historically the languages have also been known as Wendish or Lusatian. Their collective ISO 639-2 code is wen. They are closely related to Polish, Kashubian, Czech and Slovak.
There are two literary languages: Upper Sorbian (hornjoserbsce), spoken by about 40,000 people in Saxony, and Lower Sorbian (dolnoserbski) spoken by about 10,000 people in Brandenburg. The area where the two languages are spoken is known as Lusatia (Łužica in Upper Sorbian, Łužyca in Lower Sorbian, or Lausitz in German).
Paul Wexler has proposed that some sort of "Judeo-Sorbian" language may have been the genealogical ancestor of Yiddish.
History
After the settlement of the formerly Germanic territories (the part largely corresponding to the former East Germany) by the Sorbs' Slavic ancestors in the 5th and 6th centuries, the Sorbian language (or its predecessors) has been in use in much of what was the southern half of East Germany for several centuries, and has still its stronghold in (Upper and Lower) Lusatia, where it enjoys national protection and fostering until today. Outside Lusatia, it has been superseded by German, following official discrimination from the 13th century on. The printed language developed around the main Bible translations into Sorbian.

Sorbian is a west-slavic language and therefore shows structural similarities to Polish, Czech and Slovak. ''Rjana Łužica'' (Lower Sorbian: Rědna Łužyca; lit. “Beautiful Lusatia”) is the Sorbian national anthem. It was written by poet Handrij Zejler. The lyrics were firstly published on August 24, 1827, in the Leipzig magazine Serbska Nowina. Its music was composed in the beginning of 1845 by Korla Awgust Kocor (German: Karl August Katzer). The anthem was publicly performed for the first time on October 17, 1845, in Budyšin/Bautzen (Upper Sorbian Budyšin, Lower Sorbian: Budyšyn).

FTTx broadband in the Lusatian Lake District, Germany
A former brown coal area was depopulated after the loss of the mining industry in the Lusatian lake district of Brandenburg in Germany. This broadband Fttx project, driven from a regional private company prevented the further reduction of the inhabitants. The company managed to reduce the costs of deploying the project through synergies and by coordinating the constructions with civil works within the area and provided more than 6 000 homes and businesses with superfast broadband. Upper Sorbian is spoken by as many as 40,000 people, principally in the State of Saxony in Eastern Germany. Though it was legally marginalized between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, Upper Sorbian became a written language in the 1500s and flourished thereafter. Though it has faced challenges in recent decades, with many language schools closing, Upper Sorbian continues to enjoy official status in the German states of Saxony and Brandenburg, and prevails as an Internet language as well. Less than 30.000 speakers remain, living mostly in Upper Lusatia in Saxony, with Bautzen as the center of the Upper Sorbian Dialect. A fraction of Sorbian-speakers speaks the Lower Sorbian dialect, with its center in Cottbus in Brandenburg, making Lower Sorbian one of the most endangered languages of Europe.
A Sorbian state was never established, though pan-slavic movements during the cold war proposed such a state, or perhaps an integration into the Czech Republic. Instead, Sorbian history was always tied to the history of the Germans, whether as part of the Holy-Roman Empire, the German Empire or East Germany.
A decisive decline in Sorbian speakers occurred due to the protestant reformation. While most of Saxony, subsequently most of the Sorbians, converted to Protestantism, only a small area in western Lusatia, remained catholic. Martin Luther himself hated the Sorbian culture, and the protestant church served as a space for Germanization, while the catholic church served as a space for language conservation.
The triangle of Kamjenc - Kamenz, Bautzen - Budyšin and Wittichenau - Kulow, remains the area in which most Sorbian can be found up to this day. I found churches in this area to feature monolingual Sorbian signage at times too.
The main decline however started with industrialization and the unification of Germany. 250 years ago, the language was still widely spoken, yet centralization of not only the economy, but the formation of a nation state under the ideals of a unified people, enforced Germanization even further. This shows how the construct of a national language follows political borders, not the reality of speakers.

These interviews show personal views of speakers of Sorbian on what life is like when the own native language is endangered. Sorbian is a west-slavic language and therefore shows structural similarities to Polish, Czech and Slovak.
Less than 30.000 speakers remain, living mostly in Upper Lusatia in Saxony, with Bautzen as the center of the Upper Sorbian Dialect. A fraction of Sorbian-speakers speaks the Lower Sorbian dialect, with its center in Cottbus in Brandenburg, making Lower Sorbian one of the most endangered languages of Europe.
A Sorbian state was never established, though pan-slavic movements during the cold war proposed such a state, or perhaps an integration into the Czech Republic. Instead, Sorbian history was always tied to the history of the Germans, whether as part of the Holy-Roman Empire, the German Empire or East Germany.
A decisive decline in Sorbian speakers occurred due to the protestant reformation. While most of Saxony, subsequently most of the Sorbians, converted to Protestantism, only a small area in western Lusatia, remained catholic. Martin Luther himself hated the Sorbian culture, and the protestant church served as a space for Germanization, while the catholic church served as a space for language conservation.
The triangle of Kamjenc - Kamenz, Bautzen - Budyšin and Wittichenau - Kulow, remains the area in which most Sorbian can be found up to this day. I found churches in this area to feature monolingual Sorbian signage at times too.
The main decline however started with industrialization and the unification of Germany. 250 years ago, the language was still widely spoken, yet centralization of not only the economy, but the formation of a nation state under the ideals of a unified people, enforced Germanization even further. This shows how the construct of a national language follows political borders, not the reality of speakers.

''Rjana Łužica'' (Lower Sorbian: Rědna Łužyca; lit. “Beautiful Lusatia”) is the Sorbian national anthem. It was written by poet Handrij Zejler. The lyrics were firstly published on August 24, 1827, in the Leipzig magazine Serbska Nowina. Its music was composed in the beginning of 1845 by Korla Awgust Kocor (German: Karl August Katzer). The anthem was publicly performed for the first time on October 17, 1845, in Budyšin/Bautzen (Upper Sorbian Budyšin, Lower Sorbian: Budyšyn).

A former brown coal area was depopulated after the loss of the mining industry in the Lusatian lake district of Brandenburg in Germany. This broadband Fttx project, driven from a regional private company prevented the further reduction of the inhabitants. The company managed to reduce the costs of deploying the project through synergies and by coordinating the constructions with civil works within the area and provided more than 6 000 homes and businesses with superfast broadband. The project was a finalist at the European Broadband Awards in 2018.

Upper Sorbian is spoken by as many as 40,000 people, principally in the State of Saxony in Eastern Germany. Though it was legally marginalized between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, Upper Sorbian became a written language in the 1500s and flourished thereafter. Though it has faced challenges in recent decades, with many language schools closing, Upper Sorbian continues to enjoy official status in the German states of Saxony and Brandenburg, and prevails as an Internet language as well. Sorbian languages
The Sorbian languages (Serbsce, Serbski) are two closely related languages spoken by the Sorbs, a Slavic minority in the Lusatia region of eastern Germany. They are classified under the West Slavic branch of the Indo-European languages. Historically the languages have also been known as Wendish or Lusatian. Their collective ISO 639-2 code is wen. They are closely related to Polish, Kashubian, Czech and Slovak.
There are two literary languages: Upper Sorbian (hornjoserbsce), spoken by about 40,000 people in Saxony, and Lower Sorbian (dolnoserbski) spoken by about 10,000 people in Brandenburg. The area where the two languages are spoken is known as Lusatia (Łužica in Upper Sorbian, Łužyca in Lower Sorbian, or Lausitz in German).
Paul Wexler has proposed that some sort of "Judeo-Sorbian" language may have been the genealogical ancestor of Yiddish.
History
After the settlement of the formerly Germanic territories (the part largely corresponding to the former East Germany) by the Sorbs' Slavic ancestors in the 5th and 6th centuries, the Sorbian language (or its predecessors) has been in use in much of what was the southern half of East Germany for several centuries, and has still its stronghold in (Upper and Lower) Lusatia, where it enjoys national protection and fostering until today. Outside Lusatia, it has been superseded by German, following official discrimination from the 13th century on. The printed language developed around the main Bible translations into Sorbian.
