John Chapman (September 26, 1774 – March 18, 1845), often called Johnny Appleseed, was an American pioneer nurseryman who introduced apple trees to large parts of Pennsylvania, Ontario, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, as well as the northern counties of present-day West Virginia. He became an American legend while still alive, due to his kind, generous ways, his leadership in conservation, and the symbolic importance he attributed to apples. He was also a missionary for The New Church (Swedenborgian) and the inspiration for many museums and historical sites such as the Johnny Appleseed Museum in Urbana, Ohio and the Johnny Appleseed Heritage Center in between Lucas, Ohio and Mifflin, Ohio.
John Chapman was born in Leominster, Massachusetts, the second child (after his sister Elizabeth) of Nathaniel and Elizabeth Chapman (née Simonds, married February 8, 1770) of Massachusetts. His birthplace has a granite marker, and the street is called Johnny Appleseed Lane.
While Nathaniel was in military service, his wife died (July 18, 1776) shortly after giving birth to a second son, Nathaniel. The baby died about two weeks after his mother. Nathaniel Chapman ended his military service and returned home in 1780 to Longmeadow, Massachusetts. In the summer of 1780 he married Lucy Cooley of Longmeadow, Massachusetts and they had 10 children.

Plot: In a tunnel deep under Manhattan, the Old Man rules the citizens of Scum-City. He swears to lead them to a paradise within the hollow earth once he finds five noble souls; but until then his followers must steal and deal to support him. A terminally ill hunchback named Goliath, crazed by his approaching death, decides to find the five noble souls and present them to the Old Man;by beheading New Yorkers he deems worthy of the honor. Meanwhile, another Scum-City dweller known as The Kid tries to do the Old Man's bidding, tangling with deadly gangsters and eccentric drug dealers-even though The Kid is only nine and his main weapon is a water pistol filled with acid. As both Goliath and The Kid pursue paths they believe will lead to paradise, they rob, kill;and inevitably confront each other in a grand showdown.

In all honesty, the only time I knew anything about the Disney version of Johnny Appleseed as a kid was his music in one of my mom's piano books. Similarly, Talespin was the only Disney Afternoon show I don't remember watching as a kid but I did have the theme song in the same piano book. Here's a fun fact, in the episode, the Mysterious Manuscript of Mary Shelley, one of the prizes was the home video of Melody Time, the Disney film that did contain the Johnny Appleseed Segment.

Through word of mouth let it be known The man who spends his life on a mission, he's legendary Travelling from coast to coast He's the contemporary Johnny Appleseed He's making sure his garden grows He'll plant a seed in every town he goes Fertilizing the country side Couldn't stop him with insecticide Makin' sure that the garden grows, Yeah, yeah, yeah He'll water the yeard with a garden hose And you know he'll be plantin' a seed Groomin' the backyard, or whackin' a weed When diggin' holes, he'll be wearing a glove He go into the shed, get out a shovel, and he shove He'll plant the seed, makin' sure it's sown He go into the shed, and he start hoein' with the hoe, Ho,ho,ho Makin' sure that the garden grow, Yeah, yeah, yeah He'll water the yard with the garden hose Groomin'...

Lord, there goes Johnny Appleseed
He might pass by in the hour of need
There's a lot of souls
Ain't drinking from no well locked in a factory
Hey, look there goes
Hey, look there goes
If you're after getting the honey, hey
Then you don't go killing all the bees
Lord, there goes Martin Luther King
Notice how the door closes when the chimes of freedom ring
I hear what you're saying, I hear what he's saying
Is what was true now no longer so
Hey, I hear what you're saying
Hey, I hear what he's saying
If you're after getting the honey, hey
Then you don't go killing all the bees
What the people are saying
And we know every road, go go
What the people are saying
There ain't no berries on the trees
Let the summertime sun
Fall on the apple, fall on the apple
Lord, there goes a Buick forty-nine
Black sheep of the angels riding, riding down the line
We think there is a soul, we don't know
That soul is hard to find
Hey, down along the road
Hey, down along the road
If you're after getting the honey
Then you don't go killing all the bees
Hey, it's what the people are saying
It's what the people are saying
Hey, there ain't no berries on the trees
Hey, that's what the people are saying, no berries on the trees
You're checking out the honey, baby
