Deric drove us to the bus station, where we got a shuttle bus direct to Margao (Madgaon), and then a local bus into town. We stayed at Hotel La Flor, which was better than we expected. Only 900 Rps for a clean comfortable fan room at the back so we didn't get the noise from the railway line.
After settling in we took a bus to Colva Beach, as Deric had suggested. It was a pleasant ride and a lovely beach, with lots of locals enjoying themselves and a few Western tourists. We bought a Goan chicken Shawarma from one of two little stalls and it was so delicious that we tried one from the other stall as well. Quite different, but the first one was more to our liking as it came with cooked tomatoes and onion and seemed a bit spicier. We had a seafood dinner at one of the beach restaurants - a tandoori kingfish and a dish of garlic prawns with rice, accompanied by a bottle of Kingfisher beer. A pretty good meal, but the shawarma was the best part.
The bus back went via the bus station, where we stopped for about twenty minutes. Back in town, we had a walk around, bought some water for the night and Yoong couldn't resist a cob of corn from a street stall.
Back at the hotel we watched a very enjoyable movie on TV - "English Vinglish" - with English subtitles.

Margao
Margao (pronounced [mɔɽɡãːw]) is the second largest town by population, and the commercial and cultural capital of the Indian state of Goa. It is the administrative headquarters of Salcete taluka and South Goa district. By road, Margao is located approximately 33 kilometres (21 mi) from the capital Panaji, and 27 kilometres (17 mi) from Vasco da Gama.
Etymology
Margão is the Portuguese spelling with Modgão being used in Konkani. It is known as Madgaon in Marathi. It is derived from the Sanskrit Maṭhagrām which means a village with a matha.
History
Margao in pre-Portuguese times was one of the important settlements in Salcete and known as Matha Grama (the village of Mathas) as it was a temple town with nine Mathas in temple schools. Its replacement in 1579 was destroyed by raiders along with the seminary that had been built alongside it. The present church was built in 1675.
The initial settlement of Margao grew from the site of the ancient Damodar Temple. The original temple was demolished and the temple tank was filled up to be replaced by the Holy Spirit church and church grounds. The deity Damodar (a form of Lord Shiva) was carried across the Zuari Agranashini river to the Novas Conquistas in which the Sonde rulers resided. While the western side of the Church developed as a market place, the settlement grew on the eastern side, that is, the Borda region, with the church at its core and extended outwards.

Airways: To Dabolim Airport
Railways: Madgaon, Thivim & Vasco are the 3 main railway stations of goa which covers trains from almost all parts of India.
Roadways: You can get travels buses from your locations to Mapusa, Panjim, KTC Bus stand Vasco, Ponda, Cancova, Margao.
From these locations u can get either local buses or cars/bikes/scooters for rentals.
Accommodation: You will get either near to beach or away from the beach based on your budget.
Local transport in goa: Buses/ goa car rentals/goa scooter rentals/goa bike rentals.
Places to see in goa:
Anjuna beach, Baga beach, Calangute beach, Vagator beach, Dona Paula, Colva beach, Majorda beach, Palolem beach, Cavelossim beach.

Goa : Goa is the smallest state of India by area but tops the list of richest Indian states. Located in the Konkan region of West India, it shares its border with Maharashtra in the north and Karnataka in the east and south. Panaji is the capital city and Vasco da Gama is the largest city. Goa is frequently visited by a large number of international/national tourists for its beautiful beaches, Goan Carnival, Sunburn Festival and vibrant culture. It is divided into two districts namely, North Goa and South Goa. While Panaji is the headquarters of North Goa district, Margao is the headquarters of South Goa district. On 11 June 2014, Goa was honoured with the title of Best Indian Destination for Relaxation by Lonely Planet Magazine India.
