Film finance
Film finance is an aspect of film production that occurs during the development stage prior to pre-production, and is concerned with determining the potential value of a proposed film. In the United States, the value is typically based on a forecast of revenues (generally 10 years for films and 20 years for television shows), beginning with theatrical release, and including DVD sales, and release to cable broadcast television networks both domestic and international and inflight airline licensing.
About
Film finance is a subset of project finance, meaning the film project's generated cash flows rather than external sources are used to repay investors. The main factors determining the commercial success of a film include public taste, artistic merit, competition from other films released at the same time, the quality of the script, the quality of the cast, the quality of the director and other parties, etc. Even if a film looks like it will be a commercial success "on paper", there is still no accurate method of determining the levels of revenue the film will generate. In the past, risk mitigation was based on pre-sales, box office projections and ownership of negative rights. Along with strong ancillary markets in DVD, CATV, and other electronic media (like streaming video on demand -SVOD), investors were shown that picture subsidies (tax incentives and credits), and pre-sales (discountable-contract finance) from foreign distributors, could help to mitigate potential losses. As production costs have risen, however, potential financiers have become increasingly insistent upon higher degrees of certainty as to whether they will actually have their investment repaid, and assurances regarding what return they will earn.

Film finance is a subset of project finance, meaning the film project's generated cash flows rather than external sources are used to repay investors. The main factors determining the commercial success of a film include public taste, artistic merit, competition from other films released at the same time, the quality of the script, the quality of the cast, the quality of the director and other parties, etc. Even if a film looks like it will be a commercial success "on paper", there is still no accurate method of determining the levels of revenue the film will generate. In the past, risk mitigation was based on pre-sales, box office projections and ownership of negative rights. Along with strong ancillary markets in DVD, CATV, and other electronic media (like streaming video on demand -SVOD), investors were shown that picture subsidies (tax incentives and credits), and pre-sales (discountable-contract finance) from foreign distributors, could help to mitigate potential losses. As production costs have risen, however, potential financiers have become increasingly insistent upon higher degrees of certainty as to whether they will actually have their investment repaid, and assurances regarding what return they will earn. Past film slate's poor performance records are showing up in public court documents. Property and casualty companies (P&C;) like AIG had once offered insurance against film slates and the bonds issued to fund them, but now fully refuse to cover film slates. This ended in many lawsuits, starting in early 1999 (with Steve Stabler's Destination Films $100M bond fund failure and subsequent lawsuit), and continue to this day with Aramid's lawsuit on Relativity's Beverly-1-Sony film slate and the Melrose-2-Paramount slate. Citigroup attempted to wrap the Beverly-1-Sony slate with a property and casualty insurance wrapper (from the formerly bankrupt Ambac Assurance, Corp.). After these "uninsured" slate financing arrangements (SFA) failed to return even the original principal to investors, the market has sought solutions. Traditionally, banks like JP Morgan have an entertainment division that uses proprietary risk mitigation regression analysis to see if future film revenues can meet an exceedance probability (where in the ultimate revenues allow the loan to break even), but this is calculated guesswork, and has caused all of the major national banks to lose millions in bad loans. An alternative to such loss protection was developed by Geneva Media Holdings, LLC (originally as risk mitigation for affluent individuals and "direct investors" under US tax incentive IRC 181). Fully insured media funds are now being carefully reviewed by risk analysts at major hedge funds, banks and institutional pension plans specializing in investor risk mitigation. Many outside of Hollywood fail to realize the longevity of film and television after-market income streams. Many commercial films and network television shows will make money for decades. For the investor who pays for part of the negative costs, the time value of money is important. For many movie investors the required rate of return for this "risky" investment may be 25% or more. This means that while there may be TV revenues for an additional 10 years after the movie is released, the PV (present value) of those revenues is diminished by the required rate of return and the time it takes for these revenues to accrue. Ancillary revenues (VOD, DVD, Blu-ray, PPV, CATV, etc.), tend to accrue to the studio that purchased these residuals as part of their overall distribution deal. For many movie investors in the past, the theatrical box office was the primary place to gain a PV return on their investment. Ryan Kavanaugh of Relativity Media also offers participation in profits to actors, rather than up-front fees, to lower production costs and keep profits protected. Kavanaugh has used data from major studios like Sony and NBC/Universal to build a complex Monte Carlo system to determine movie failure rates prior to production. The box office results of his movies have been mixed, as there is no set ratios, blends, mixtures, method or secret crystal ball that can project movie revenues, investor risk or rejection parameters. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film_finance -

Film finance is a subset of project finance, meaning the film project's generated cash flows rather than external sources are used to repay investors. The main factors determining the commercial success of a film include public taste, artistic merit, competition from other films released at the same time, the quality of the script, the quality of the cast, the quality of the director and other parties, etc. Even if a film looks like it will be a commercial success "on paper", there is still no accurate method of determining the levels of revenue the film will generate. In the past, risk mitigation was based on pre-sales, box office projections and ownership of negative rights. Along with strong ancillary markets in DVD, CATV, and other electronic media (like streaming video on demand -SVOD), investors were shown that picture subsidies (tax incentives and credits), and pre-sales (discountable-contract finance) from foreign distributors, could help to mitigate potential losses. As production costs have risen, however, potential financiers have become increasingly insistent upon higher degrees of certainty as to whether they will actually have their investment repaid, and assurances regarding what return they will earn.
Past film slate's poor performance records are showing up in public court documents. Property and casualty companies (P&C;) like AIG had once offered insurance against film slates and the bonds issued to fund them, but now fully refuse to cover film slates. This ended in many lawsuits, starting in early 1999 (with Steve Stabler's Destination Films $100M bond fund failure and subsequent lawsuit), and continue to this day with Aramid's lawsuit on Relativity's Beverly-1-Sony film slate and the Melrose-2-Paramount slate. Citigroup attempted to wrap the Beverly-1-Sony slate with a property and casualty insurance wrapper (from the formerly bankrupt Ambac Assurance, Corp.). After these "uninsured" slate financing arrangements (SFA) failed to return even the original principal to investors, the market has sought solutions. Traditionally, banks like JP Morgan have an entertainment division that uses proprietary risk mitigation regression analysis to see if future film revenues can meet an exceedance probability (where in the ultimate revenues allow the loan to break even), but this is calculated guesswork, and has caused all of the major national banks to lose millions in bad loans. An alternative to such loss protection was developed by Geneva Media Holdings, LLC (originally as risk mitigation for affluent individuals and "direct investors" under US tax incentive IRC 181). Fully insured media funds are now being carefully reviewed by risk analysts at major hedge funds, banks and institutional pension plans specializing in investor risk mitigation.
Many outside of Hollywood fail to realize the longevity of film and television after-market income streams. Many commercial films and network television shows will make money for decades. For the investor who pays for part of the negative costs, the time value of money is important. For many movie investors the required rate of return for this "risky" investment may be 25% or more. This means that while there may be TV revenues for an additional 10 years after the movie is released, the PV (present value) of those revenues is diminished by the required rate of return and the time it takes for these revenues to accrue. Ancillary revenues (VOD, DVD, Blu-ray, PPV, CATV, etc.), tend to accrue to the studio that purchased these residuals as part of their overall distribution deal. For many movie investors in the past, the theatrical box office was the primary place to gain a PV return on their investment.
Ryan Kavanaugh of Relativity Media also offers participation in profits to actors, rather than up-front fees, to lower production costs and keep profits protected. Kavanaugh has used data from major studios like Sony and NBC/Universal to build a complex Monte Carlo system to determine movie failure rates prior to production. The box office results of his movies have been mixed, as there is no set ratios, blends, mixtures, method or secret crystal ball that can project movie revenues, investor risk or rejection parameters.

ManIFF2015 jury member Gareth Jones has been involved in the finance, sales and distribution of feature films for over twenty years. After graduating in law from University College London, Gareth practised as a corporate lawyer with City firm ‘Macfarlanes’. He joined ‘HandMade Films’ as an in-house lawyer in 1984, went on to head ‘HandMade’ and subsequently became Managing Director of ‘Alibi Films International’, both international film sales companies. Gareth negotiated the corporate acquisition of ‘HandMade Films’ by ‘Paragon’, a Canadian public company, and was instrumental in floating ‘Alibi Communications’ plc on ‘AIM’ and sat on the main board. Gareth has exec produced, financed, packaged and sold international rights in dozens of successful independent feature films including ‘Withnail and I’, ‘Mona Lisa’, ‘How to Get Ahead in Advertising’, ‘Nuns on the Run’, ‘The Man With Rain in His Shoes’, ‘Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’, ‘The Hard Word’, ‘The secretary’, ‘The Business’, ‘Mystics’, ‘Open Range’, ‘My Summer of Love’ and ‘4,3,2,1’.

ManIFF2015 jury member Gareth Jones has been involved in the finance, sales and distribution of feature films for over twenty years. After graduating in law from University College London, Gareth practised as a corporate lawyer with City firm ‘Macfarlanes’. He joined ‘HandMade Films’ as an in-house lawyer in 1984, went on to head ‘HandMade’ and subsequently became Managing Director of ‘Alibi Films International’, both international film sales companies. Gareth negotiated the corporate acquisition of ‘HandMade Films’ by ‘Paragon’, a Canadian public company, and was instrumental in floating ‘Alibi Communications’ plc on ‘AIM’ and sat on the main board. Gareth has exec produced, financed, packaged and sold international rights in dozens of successful independent feature films including ‘Withnail and I’, ‘Mona Lisa’, ‘How to Get Ahead in Advertising’, ‘Nuns on the Run’, ‘The Man With Rain in His Shoes’, ‘Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’, ‘The Hard Word’, ‘The secretary’, ‘The Business’, ‘Mystics’, ‘Open Range’, ‘My Summer of Love’ and ‘4,3,2,1’.

Film finance is a subset of project finance, meaning the film project's generated cash flows rather than external sources are used to repay investors. The main factors determining the commercial success of a film include public taste, artistic merit, competition from other films released at the same time, the quality of the script, the quality of the cast, the quality of the director and other parties, etc. Even if a film looks like it will be a commercial success "on paper", there is still no accurate method of determining the levels of revenue the film will generate. In the past, risk mitigation was based on pre-sales, box office projections and ownership of negative rights. Along with strong ancillary markets in DVD, CATV, and other electronic media (like streaming video on demand -SVOD), investors were shown that picture subsidies (tax incentives and credits), and pre-sales (discountable-contract finance) from foreign distributors, could help to mitigate potential losses. As production costs have risen, however, potential financiers have become increasingly insistent upon higher degrees of certainty as to whether they will actually have their investment repaid, and assurances regarding what return they will earn.
Past film slate's poor performance records are showing up in public court documents. Property and casualty companies (P&C;) like AIG had once offered insurance against film slates and the bonds issued to fund them, but now fully refuse to cover film slates. This ended in many lawsuits, starting in early 1999 (with Steve Stabler's Destination Films $100M bond fund failure and subsequent lawsuit), and continue to this day with Aramid's lawsuit on Relativity's Beverly-1-Sony film slate and the Melrose-2-Paramount slate. Citigroup attempted to wrap the Beverly-1-Sony slate with a property and casualty insurance wrapper (from the formerly bankrupt Ambac Assurance, Corp.). After these "uninsured" slate financing arrangements (SFA) failed to return even the original principal to investors, the market has sought solutions. Traditionally, banks like JP Morgan have an entertainment division that uses proprietary risk mitigation regression analysis to see if future film revenues can meet an exceedance probability (where in the ultimate revenues allow the loan to break even), but this is calculated guesswork, and has caused all of the major national banks to lose millions in bad loans. An alternative to such loss protection was developed by Geneva Media Holdings, LLC (originally as risk mitigation for affluent individuals and "direct investors" under US tax incentive IRC 181). Fully insured media funds are now being carefully reviewed by risk analysts at major hedge funds, banks and institutional pension plans specializing in investor risk mitigation.
Many outside of Hollywood fail to realize the longevity of film and television after-market income streams. Many commercial films and network television shows will make money for decades. For the investor who pays for part of the negative costs, the time value of money is important. For many movie investors the required rate of return for this "risky" investment may be 25% or more. This means that while there may be TV revenues for an additional 10 years after the movie is released, the PV (present value) of those revenues is diminished by the required rate of return and the time it takes for these revenues to accrue. Ancillary revenues (VOD, DVD, Blu-ray, PPV, CATV, etc.), tend to accrue to the studio that purchased these residuals as part of their overall distribution deal. For many movie investors in the past, the theatrical box office was the primary place to gain a PV return on their investment.
Ryan Kavanaugh of Relativity Media also offers participation in profits to actors, rather than up-front fees, to lower production costs and keep profits protected. Kavanaugh has used data from major studios like Sony and NBC/Universal to build a complex Monte Carlo system to determine movie failure rates prior to production. The box office results of his movies have been mixed, as there is no set ratios, blends, mixtures, method or secret crystal ball that can project movie revenues, investor risk or rejection parameters.

The history and purpose of the Federal Reserve Bank is not what is commonly believed to be the truth. Its function in the financial affairs of the United States carries a definite dark side to it - one that would shock the average US citizen. Here are some details about this 5-part article series exposing the real truth behind this very powerful agency and why the nation listens when it speaks.
This first article lays the foundation of the history of the Federal Reserve by pointing out why there ever was an attempt to grab the controls of the reigns of agencies that produce the money in the US. Going back to England, it was shown that central banks have known for centuries that controlling the making and lending of currency to a nation ultimately means the power to control that nation.
Before the Revolutionary War, the King of England, George III, working with the central Bank of England, had rejected the new currency of the Colonists in America. In its place, he wanted the Colonies to borrow English currency from the central bank of England with interest. The idea of being instantly indebted to England was quickly rejected by the Colonists - and war soon broke out. Benjamin Franklin believed that this action by the greedy money manipulators was probably the single most important reason behind the War.
The War did not end the problem of the money manipulators, however, but their efforts to get control of America's money were renewed after the War. The international bankers program was to lend money with interest and to control its distribution. Through this means they would create a never-ending indebtedness of that nation to the central bankers which would continually make those bankers unbelievably wealthy.
This was so much of an ongoing work by the international bankers that a number of attempts to establish a central bank in the United States had to be destroyed. Several attempts were even made in the twentieth century.
At last, a situation was created that led many Americans to rush to withdraw their money from banks immediately. The false belief that it was failing, was all that was needed for the formation of a central bank system to be created in the United States. A secret meeting in 1910 had laid the plans for the Federal Reserve Act. It was passed and signed by President Woodrow Wilson in 1913. After he learned more about the truth of what it would mean to the American people, he deeply regretted it and called himself a "most unhappy man" for having brought it about - largely because of the campaign favors that it would bring him.
One of the supposed reasons that the Federal Reserve was created was that it would create a much greater stability in our banking system. The appearance of failing banks brought the illusion that people needed this stability. It would be able to control inflation, and much more. The truth, however, is that financial chaos and panic was deliberately created by their actions - and many independent banks were destroyed in an effort to bring them under its control.

The first of two Co-Chairmen of the CFR is Carla A. Hills,who served as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under Gerald Ford (Knight of Malta,33rd Degree Freemason,Vatican-controlled Bohemian Club)and as Trade Representative under George H. W. Bush (Knight of Malta,33rd Degree Freemason,Vatican-controlled Bohemian Club, Vatican-controlled Skull & Bones, aka Papal Knights of Eulogia,CFR).
She was an assistant to Attorney General Elliot Richardson,whose son,Henry S. Richardson,is a professor of philosophy at Jesuit Georgetown University. She is part of the Executive Committee of the Trilateral Commission, and one of the three chairmen of the Trilateral Commission (Peter Sutherland) was Jesuit-trained at Gonzaga College. She is an advisory board member of the Partnership for a Secure America (PSA), which is chaired by brother CFR members Warren B. Rudman and Lee H. Hamilton. Rudman was Jesuit-trained at Boston College Law School and Lee Hamilton has close ties to the Jesuit Order's Knight of Malta-directed Central Intelligence Agency. Hills is also on the board of American International Group (AIG), which CFR corporate member is run by Edward Liddy (its CEO), who was trained at the Catholic University of America.
Since 1993, Hills has been on the board of Chevron, along with brother CFR member Donald S. Rice, who was trained at the Roman Catholic University of Notre Dame, its President Emeritus being long time CFR member, Roman Priest Theodore Hesburgh, one of the Vatican's foremost leaders of Pope Benedict XVI's 14th Amendment American Empire.
The other Co-Chairman of the CFR is Jewish Freemason Robert E. Rubin, who served under President Bill Clinton as Treasury Secretary and headed Clinton's National Economic Council. He was a Clinton crony.

But how did it all go so wrong? Lack of government regulation; easy lending in the US housing market meant anyone could qualify for a home loan with no government regulations in place. Also, London was competing with New York as the banking capital of the world. Gordon Brown, the British finance minister at the time, introduced "light touch regulation" - giving bankers a free hand in the marketplace.
Meltdown moves on to examine the epidemic of fear that caused the world's banks to stop lending and how the people began their fight back. Finally, it asks how the world can prepare for the next crisis even as it recognises that this one is far from over.
We hear about the sheikh who says the crash never happened; a Wall Street king charged with fraud; a congresswoman who wants to jail the bankers; and the world leaders who want a re-think of capitalism.
