The Prime Movers "Live At The Town And Country Club" 1989-07-23

The Prisoners split in 1986 after four albums and the sadly inevitable music-industry-induced agony, but the Day / Crockford partnership didn’t stay dormant for long…...After a stint as drummer for the Mighty Caesars with Chatham’s very own Renaissance man Billy Childish, Graham Day was re-joined by his old partner in 1989, along with ex-Daggerman Wolf Howard on drums, and formed the Prime Movers. Allan and Wolf had been part of the original line-up of the James Taylor Quartet (formed after the Prisoners split), but were now free agents. The Prime Movers recorded the raw and unpolished ‘Sins of the Fourfathers’ as a three piece, and were soon joined by Fay Hallam (ex Makin’ Time) on organ. Two subsequent albums followed but the band called it a day in 1993. trax:

The Krontjong Devils "En Garde" 2008

Before the Krontjong Devils start thanking everyone for their help in putting out this record, they apologize to their fans in the Netherlands and to their fans worldwide for being out of touch for so long. Sorry. They were not lazy the last 4 years, but just preoccupied with their new hobby -- which is, of course, sword fighting…...Maybe they were a little too ambitious. Just like their colleague Bruce Dickinson, Irom Maiden's lead singer, they set their sights on competing in the Olympic sword fighting event. And when the Krontjong Devils get an idea in their head, you can't stop them.
Fortunately, they were not that talented, except for Nico. He was asked to join the Dutch Olympic team but he refused. He's go only if the other Krontjong Devils came along. "One for all, all for one" was his answer to the IOC. And then they suddenly realized what they'd been doing. The were forsaking their real talent: making wild, wet, reverbn-drenched surf music.
Errare humanum est.
And now, the Krontjong Devils would like to thank a couple of people. First of all, Marthy Coumans for the incredible sound on this record, Walter Tremp and his recording facilities, Former member Jan Veenstra for the excellent photography, Hedwig for laying the Oet, Henk Smit of schermvereniging Heerenleed, Sander Zwanenburg of schermvereniging GSSV Donar 1881 for letting us use their clothes, the Oetstar Record Company for their trust in us, and the Hobbyrock Foundation for giving us financial carte blanche in this enterprise.
One last thing, fighting ain't no solution but it can be a great hobby.trax:

The Sunrays "The Very Best Of The Sunrays" The Tower Recordings 1964-1967

Producer Murry Wilson-father of the Beach Boys' Brian, Dennis and Carl-helped catapult this Southern California surf band to stardom. Here are 27 of the best cuts from their 1965 sessions for Capitol's Tower Records division, including their three hits- Andrea; I Live for the Sun , and Still -plus Outta Gas; Car Party; Jo Ann , and more.Murry Wilson promoted this Southern California Surf band after the Beach Boys (with his 3 sons Brian, Carl, and Dennis) went thier own road, and were able to produce, write, and perform music the way that they wanted. Murry, although he helped get them in the door of the music business, wanted more controll on the group than they wanted.
To make a long story short, Murry decided that if the Beach Boys didn't want him, he'd create is own "Beach Boys" and promote them. That's what he did with a group that came to be known as "The Sunrays".
Apparently one of the lead singers (Rick Henn) had already written a song called "I Live For The Sun" before the group got it's name. They recorded a full album for Tower records (a sub-division of Capitol records), and recorded the album itself (titled "Andrea") in the Capitol Records building in Hollywood. They released a single ahead of that (both sides penned and produced by Murry Wilson), called "Car Party" and "Outta Gas", but it was "I Live For The Sun" and "Andrea" that would become their best known songs. The rest of the album has more songs by Rick Henn, as well as other original compositions by various band members.
They never got national airplay (or very little), and only played small clubs, appeared on TV on "Shindig" once, and once opened for the Beach Boys (ironic huh?). But at least in Southern California and surrounding areas, they were well known (and probably more so now, as they were mentioned in the recent Beach Boys TV movie). After "Andrea" was released at the end of 1965, they recorded a few more singles, then kind of faded away.
On the technical side...the entire "Andrea" LP is included on this disc in stereo. The fidelity and sound is fantastic. I own the original LP (in MONO though), and the CD sounds just as good, possibly better. Also included on this CD is thier first Tower single "Car Party/Outta Gas", and a handful of post-Andrea singles. The singles are in MONO, but the LP cuts are in STEREO.
Without soundclips here, if you haven't heard their music before, it's very reminiscent of early Beach Boys records; good harmony, some falsetto singing, and some horns mixed in with the songs. Just straight forward goodtimes surfing/beach style songs.
The LP cuts were produced by Murry Wilson and Don Ralke. Don Ralke arranged some of the tracks on that album, and Hiam King arranged the others.
I know it's just another person's opinion (mine), but I hope this review helps. It's not only a valuable and historic set of recordings, but they're very good too!Mr. Saratoga, the Music Man
After being dismissed from the Beach Boys' team, Wilson-clan father Murry set out to recreate some of the sunshine magic he'd helped market with his sons' band. The new quintet included schoolmates of Carl Wilson and featured singer/songwriter Rick Henn as the group's leader. Murry's connections swung a record deal with the Capitol subsidiary Tower, and after a misfiring single that paired two of the elder Wilson's car songs ("Outta Gas" b/w "Car Party"), the group hit locally in 1965 with the Henn-written "I Live for the Sun," charting at #51. The follow-up (also by Henn), "Andrea," faired slightly better, just missing the top-40 the following year. A self-titled LP for Tower (including only one more sappy Murry Wilson tune, "Bye Bye Baby") and a few singles generated little commercial interest, with the side "Still" grazing the bottom of the top-100 in 1966.
The group's harmonies, particularly on their first single, were clearly inspired by The Beach Boys. But the soaring falsetto of "I Look Baby - I Can't See" is closer to New York groups like The Tokens, and the lush harmonies on many tracks suggest the vocal arrangements of The Association. There is some great West Coast sunshine pop here, with the multipart vocals supplemented by horn charts and swinging dance beats. The band recorded at top-notch facilities United Western and Goldstar with engineering by Chuck Britz and Stan Ross, and the high quality results can be heard in Collectables crisp stereo reissue (mono on 1-2, 15-16, and 18-21). Tracks 3-14 constitute the group's LP (though "I Live for the Sun" is moved from its original seventh spot to the top of the order to reflect its pre-LP release). Tracks 15-21 are assorted singles, and the remaining six bonus tracks include a TV mix of "I Live for the Sun," new half-and-half mixes (instrumental, with vocals kicking in mid-song) of "Andrea" "Jo Ann" and "You Don't Phase Me," and the backing track for "Don't Take Yourself Too Seriously.”(Hyperbolic)

"LEGENDS OF GUITAR" - Country, Vol. 1

The guitar’s evolution from rhythm to lead was paralleled by the increasing renown of its country players. But even with the guitar’s lead role, Nashville’s system often subordinated the stardom of pickers to the vocalists (or band leaders) on whose records they performed. Guitar Player’s 1990 collection highlights seventeen stellar guitar performances, ranging from hotshot slingers like Joe Maphis whose instrumentals serve up his flying fingers front-and-center, to brilliant players like Grady Martin, whose Mexicali-flavored picking serves as a duet to Marty Robbins’ vocal on "El Paso.".....The range of musical and guitar playing styles presented here is astonishing. Maphis and his disciple Larry Collins flat pick up a storm in "Hurricane." Jimmy Bryant & Speedy West duel with guitar and steel on "The Night Rider." Earl "Joaquin" Murphey provides swinging steel in Spade Cooley’s big-band. Merle Travis shows off his acoustic fingerpicking talents (as opposed to the honky-tonk he’s more commonly known for) on "Cannon Ball Stomp," and Chet Atkins (backed by Homer and Jethro) shows off his variation of Travis’ style on "Galloping on the Guitar." Leon McAuliffe (of Bob Wills’ Texas Playboys) and Leon Rhodes (of Ernest Tubb’s Texas Troubadours) shine on a pair of instrumentals.
Carl Perkins, remembered today mostly for his rockabilly sides demonstrates his exceptional country skills on "Tennessee," an early side waxed for Sun. Later samplings include the chiming 12-string of Roger McGuinn supporting the picking of Clarence White on the Byrds’ "Nashville West," and Reggie Young’s 1981 work on Merle Haggard’s loping "I Think I’ll Just Stay Here and Drink." Additional highlights include Bud Isaacs watershed pedal steel appearance on Webb Pierce’s "Slowly" and Doc Watson’s folk-country fingerpicked cover of John D. Loudermilk’s "Windy and Warm." The inclusion of longtime Sons of the Pioneers guitarist Roy Lanham’s bebop playing on "Lost Weekend," is a fine, though not particularly relevant to the theme of the collection - too bad a Pioneer’s side couldn’t be included. The disc’s lack of chronological sequencing is a bit puzzling. Audio quality is generally excellent (with a few pops and crackles on some of the earlier transcription work), and Rich Kienzle’s extensive liner notes are thorough and engaging. (Amazon)

"Herman's Hermits' Record Collection"

One thing that separated HERMAN’S HERMITS from many other British Invasion groups was their lack of a songwriter…...Most of their Beat Group brethren (the Beatles, the Stones, the Hollies, the Animals) started out performing and recording covers of American hits (from the likes of Chuck Berry, Chicago blues artists, the Girl Groups, etc.) before teams of songwriters began to emerge from within their ranks. But the same cannot be said for Peter Noone’s gang. This made them ever reliant on the songs of others. Like many, they mined the American R’n’R songbook but then they took a more decided English turn, calling on some British writers as well as older English music hall songs in an attempt to play up their Manchester identity for a growing American audience. Towards the end of their successful run, they tapped into songwriters who would write songs expressly for them (Graham Gouldman, P.F. Sloan) but the records they chose to re-make give us some idea about what their own musical sensibility might have been like. HERMAN’S HERMITS Record Collection focuses on their catalog of singles.

Captain Sensible "Women and Captains First" 1982

Pure pop, just as it should sound!
"He said captain I said, wot? He said captain, I said wot, I said wot you want"
Many will only be familiar with the hit "Happy Talk", which is not the best track on this album. The tunes are all strong, and though generally lighthearted and fun there is the odd serious subject and several different musical styles thrown in to add variety. And it works -- Women And Captains First is an enjoyable listen throughout. Oh, and the Capt.(Ray Burns, technically) gets some help from Robyn Hitchcock, who not only plays some guitar but also co-wrote a couple of songs. Try to guess which ones without peeking at the credits. Hitchcock also was involved with Sensible's follow-up. His wife Rachel also chimed in with her 3-woman band Dolly Mixture on back-up vocals. New Musik fans are sure to love this as Tony Mansfield contributes much of his considerable talents, not just with his distinctive production. Sadly this excellent album has never been released on CD. - by Sounds greatsuch a sensible family is:

The Krontjong Devils "The Surfin Sounds Of The Krontjong Devils" 1996 + "Moovin' With The Krontjong Devils" - 7"/45rpm

Three years ago I drove up north to the old city of Groningen to look at a group of young performers, who were presenting their debut EP at the club where the action is, the VERA teenclub. While entering the club the band was already playing on front of a crowd of swinging teenagers.
I was immediately impressed, in fact 'stunned' would be closer to the truth. The boys, Jan, Kees, Hendrik Jan, Jan Pier and Gerhard were fresh funny and totally uninhibited.
Through the years I've been following thede guys when they were playing at teendances and frat and poolparties. I can honestly report that sometimes the air was filled with off-key guitar playing and other misdemeanors, but then again there was always was that good humour and enthousiasm that made it easily bearable.
I have to admit that they started playing better and better since the first time I met our heroes. This can be heard on some great EP's you surely want to hear. I sincerely hope you enjoy listening to this album - Dr. Oet connoisseur of great surf & garage rock&roll

Don & Dewey "Jungle Hop" (1957-1964 Specialty)

Man, is this stuff great! So why don't you already have this in your collection?.....Perhaps you haven't heard of it yet, or perhaps you've just heard of Don & Dewey -- a pair of high school friends who started performing as a duo after playing in the Squires together -- who recorded many sides for Specialty Records in the late 50s. They never had hits on their own, but they wrote and recorded songs that others brought to the charts, including the Sonny Bono-penned "Koko Joe," and the originals "Big Boy Pete," "Jungle Hop," and the perennial garage rock classic "Farmer John." That alone suggests that they were first-rate songwriters, but their talents run deep; these may be the standouts, but their other singles and the songs not issued until this 1991 collection are uniformly excellent. And that's just one side of the group. Just as importantly, they were dynamite musicians, rocking hard (Dewey Terry played a mean guitar, and Don "Sugarcane" Harris wasn't a slouch himself on the instrument, though his violin talents weren't fully appreciated here.) Supported by the Specialty house band (the same band that played on Little Richard's records) and singing delirious tag-team vocals make this sound insanely alive with life. There isn't a bad track here; and even if they didn't have hits and are still a cult item, they left behind a hell of a legacy, as evidenced by this necessary disc.

The Buff Medways "Steady The Buffs" 2002

Try sitting still while this one's on! Wild Billy Childish's ace 100th album has more raw rock-n-roll energy, passionate vocals, and catchy songs than you can shake a chicken at. - amazonI purchased Steady the Buffs by Billy Childish and the Friends of the Buff Medway Fanciers Association (wheee...) after reading an interview with Billy in MOJO.
The shock accompanying my first listen was akin to what happened when I first heard 'Tutti Frutti' by Little Richard: a hiss of static followed by transcendant rock 'n' roll.
You see, the "rock 'n' roll" part of the equation is misisng from a lot, maybe most, of rock music today. The 'too tough to live, too tough to die' ethos has been replaced by hiding the singer behind dancers...until, of course, you want to show her breast. But...I digress.
Billy Childish and his bands are likely the greatest cover band of all time. And, I mean this in the most complementary way.
Evoking pieces of Link Wray, the Kinks, early Who, countless also rans and merging it with a more contemporary Johnny Rotten attitude, Mr. Childish puts the paddles on the heart of rock 'n' roll and brings it back to life. - By Jersey Kidtrax:

The Moonglows "Blue Velvet" The Ultimate Collection 1954-1959

Few rivaled the Moonglows in musical sophistication, inventiveness or flair…...They could sing gorgeous heartache ballads, rollicking up-tempo rhythm tunes, creditable period-piece novelty numbers, wonderful pop covers or shattering originals. This two-disc set contains 44 outstanding numbers, with every major Moonglows anthem and several others that weren't big hits but deserved to be, such as "Penny Arcade" and "Love Is a River." This collection updates and expands the Greatest Sides single LP release briefly available when Sugar Hill had the Chess catalog in the 1970s. It wisely restricts material to the era when they were at their best, the 1950s, and includes an excellent booklet.(Ron Wynn, Allmusic)

Lorette Velvette "Lost Part Of Me" 1997

The songs on this record are steeped in what can only be described as the Memphis "X" factor which means super weird and soulful, like a really, really spaced and rocked out Lucinda Williams.Lorette Velvette's third solo full-length, Lost Part of Me, further defines her as an artist capable of effortlessly gliding from deliciously ugly, disturbing, gender-bending garage/glam/Southern punk rock to luscious, beautiful balladry to backwoods porch stomps with an ease and grace all her own. Predating Jack White's explorations of the similarities between garage and traditional folk by nearly six years (really, the two are cut from the same cloth), Velvette is more of an experimenter, at least on record, leaving plenty of room for dissonant, psychedelic freakouts with textural guitars and an unyielding edge akin to Sonic Youth's glorious moments. Sequenced like an excellent mixtape, Lost Part of Me opens psychedelic and loud as Velvette and her band wash beauty and fearsome ugliness with each other and smoothly flows into Delta blues, call-and-response gospel stomp, and back around to bawdy experimentalism. The album is a roller coaster of style and, at times, generally weird, but Velvette is always fascinating and brilliant here. ~ Gregory McIntosh, All Music Guidemusicans:

The Torquays "Return Engagement" - Live 2003

Melodic Surf from SoCal's Top Surf Band. The Torquays capture the sight, sound, drive and excitement of Instrumental Music at its peak with Steve Soest and Armin Brown on electric guitar, Don Parra on bass guitar and Duff Paulsen on drums, marimba and electric guitar. With their matching outfits and matching guitars and amps, The Torquays take the audience to a musical era that is as fresh today as it was in the days of Hot Rods, Hodads, Greasers and Gremmies.
Initially formed in 1964 by guitarist Jerry Gordon in Shawnee Mission, Kansas, the band has transformed over the years to the current line-up listed below. Some of the members of the group have played with various other Instrumental bands and musicians such as Dick Dale and the Del-tones, The Lively Ones, The Goofy Foots, Nokie Edwards of The Ventures, Bob Spickard of The Chantays and George Tomsco of The Fireballs.
Steve and Armin usually take to the stage with their matching blonde Fender Jazzmasters and their matching blonde Fender Dual Showman amplifiers...Don supplies the bottom end with his matching blonde Fender Precision Bass and matching blonde Fender PS400 all-tube amplifier. Duff rounds out the rhythm section with his 60's vintage champagne sparkle Ludwig Classics...On a few occasions he will trade his drums for his matching blonde Fender Jaguar and that's when Steve handles the drum chores. Makes for an interesting set... no doubt! - cdbabytrax:

The Prisoners "WiserMiserDemelza" 1983 + "Electric Fit" 1983 (EP)

…one more of the most important Mod / Garage Beat Albums ever!!!In the early 80s the Medway sound was born with a flurry of records from The Milkshakes and The Prisoners. The Prisoners produced a tough version of the sound of the 60s played with great enthusiasm and lots of GoGo. The Prisoners are the definitive psychedelic garage band, clearly influenced by the likes of the Small Faces, and cited as an influence for The Charlatans and -although not cited so openly- the entire brit pop and acid jazz scenes. Sixties/Garage/Psychedelic/Punk music with equally loud and up front guitar and keyboard sounds bursting with rawness. The band broke up in the late 80s after an ill-starred deal with Stiff Records. Drummer Johnny left the music business, guitarist Graham Day and bass player Allan Crockford had success with the mod band The Prime Movers, and the organist, JAMES TAYLOR formed his own ensemble and has enjoyed fame and success since then with his amazing THE JAMES TAYLOR QUARTET. This album was originally released on CD by Big Beat Records in 1990 and is a re-release of the 1983 vinyl album of the same name plus 7 bonus tracks recorded by the group and released on singles/compelations around 1984. TheWiserMiserDemelza (1983), which makes up the bulk of this double 10², was produced by one time Radiator, and ex-Pogue, Phillip Chevron. The ³plus 7² consists of the non-album flip of the single from the album alongside the 4 cuts from the 'Electric Fit' E.P., 'Reaching My Head' from the 'Four On 4' E.P. (a compilation from the T.V. programme The Tube), the rare song 'Coming Home' and a third 'Go Go' piece. Of the original album stuff, the track that leaps out and hits you where you get most pleasure is "Hurricane". "Unbeliever" is also great, and oh don't you just wish "Go Go" would get the full 3 minute treatment - Ah well!! Bonus tracks "Melanie", "Coming Home" and "Reaching My Head" are much treasured additions for the dedicated fan. Ted Kessler/Roger Sargent, NME (7 June '97): "The toughest and coolest platoon to ever emerge from this isle's only true punk outpost". "If you're a fan of either The Charlatans or Kula Shaker, then you owe your allegiance to these bands to The Prisoners because they invented them".THE PRISONERS:

"Electric Fit" 1983 (EP)

Seeing these live in the 80's wasa truly awe inspiring event only matched by a night with The Milkshakes. - Mystdr Well this was my 'fave band' of the 80's and probably of all time, this was the start for Graham Day and he went on to such brilliant outfits as The Prime Movers, Solarflares and recently The Gaolers.

The Torquays "Road Trip" 2000

This is the second effort from Steve Soest's band the Torquays. It's a much improved sound, more developed and very enjoyable. Some these tracks will endure for years to come.
