The Republic of the Congo (French: République du Congo), also known as Congo, Congo Republic,West Congo, or Congo-Brazzaville, is a country located in Central Africa. It is bordered by five countries: Gabon to the west; Cameroon to the northwest; the Central African Republic to the northeast; the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the east and south; and the Angolan exclave of Cabinda to the southwest.
The region was dominated by Bantu-speaking tribes, who built trade links leading into the Congo River basin. Congo-Brazzaville was formerly part of the French colony of Equatorial Africa. Upon independence in 1960, the former colony of French Congo became the Republic of the Congo. The People's Republic of the Congo was a Marxist–Leninist one-party state from 1970 to 1991. Multi-party elections have been held since 1992, although a democratically elected government was ousted in the 1997 Republic of the Congo Civil War and President Denis Sassou Nguesso has ruled for 26 of the past 36 years.

Earlier this month, the UN said Congolese security forces killed at least 40 people and rounded up 460 others during demonstrations that rocked the country. The Democratic Republic of Congo has cut its economic growth forecast for 2016 from 9 percent to 4.3 percent. [Low commodity prices are continuing to erode much-needed government revenue. Africa's top copper producer relies on its mining and smaller oil industry for most of its export earnings. Copper output slumped 14 percent in the first half of the year. Cobalt, the metal used in lithium-ion batteries, slid by 13 percent over the same period. The government has also slashed its budget by 22 percent in response to low commodity revenues. Mozambique is another country battling with low commodity prices. Nearly 4000 coal miners have lost their jobs in the past year, as mining firms such as Brazil's Vale scale back production. Vale operates an open cast coal mine in the north-west. It's le...

Rituals, Music and oral traditions are at the centre of hunter-gatherers cultural resilience. Great similarities in vocal polyphonic singing styles between African Pygmies and similar taboos around reproduction and food suggest ancient relationships and long-term survival of these cultural traits.
UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2008 URL: http://www.unesco.org/culture/ich/RL/00018 Description: The Aka Pygmies living in the south-west region of the Central African Republic have developed a distinctive vocal musical tradition, which involves a complex type of contrapuntal polyphony based on four voices, mastered by all members of the Aka community. Music and dance form an integral part of Aka rituals including ceremonies related to the inauguration of new encampments, hunting and funerals. Unlike polyphonic systems that are written down in notation, the vocal tradition of the Aka Pygmies allows for spontaneous expression and improvisation. During performances, each singer can change his or her voice to produce a multitude of variations...

“La Sape” is a unique movement based in Congo that unites fashion-conscious men who are ready to splurge money they don’t really have on designer clothes. Dressing in stark contrast with their surroundings, these elegant ambiance-makers become true local celebrities… but this fame comes at a price. The Republic of the Congo in Central Africa can’t boast of high standards of living. Yet, there are men here who are prepared to spend a fortune on designer suits. They call themselves “sapeurs” – members of the “La Sape” movement. “La Sape” comes from French and stands for “The Society of Ambiance-Makers and Elegant People”. For its adherents, it’s all about style and elegance, the right combination of colours and textures, brand-names and the highest quality materials. They derive true joy fr...

The World Health Organization says the Democratic Republic of Congo is home to nearly five percent of the world’s people with neuro-psychiatric disorders.
It's a statistic that is hard to grasp: According to the U.N. nearly 5,000 people are being forced from their homes every day in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The internal displacement is mainly the result of a conflict between tribal groups and government troops in the Central Kasai region. The situation has left millions without access to food and water. VOA's Kevin Enochs reports. Originally published at - http://www.voanews.com/a/violence-contributing-to-health-crisis-in-congo/3848964.html

Its a simple check on child health status, but it is having a dramatic impact. The community approach to treating malnutrition began in 2008, when the Government of DR Congo adopted a national protocol and training modules for health and community workers. This is the third of four films focusing on Save the Children's work on children's health in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Growing up in a country rich in natural resources where millions live in extreme poverty, he's turned his focus to building resources in the DRC that will allow its citizens to build wealth without being exploited by foreign influences. French/Span/Nat Angolan troops were guarding the strategic Congolese port town of Matadi on Sunday after rebel forces trying to oust President Laurent Kabila deserted their positions. The Angolans took control of Matadi over the weekend after the rebels put up only light resistance before fleeing into the surrounding forest. The loss of Matadi, one of the last major rebel strongholds, is a blow to the insurgent force that just weeks ago seemed poised to take the capital, Kinshasa, about 350 kilometers to the northeast. This is the town of Matadi, just over 350 kilometers south-west of the Congolese capital Kinshasa. After a brief outburst of fighting on Sunday, it's now a government prize. The Congolese army on Tuesday battled M23 rebels in the country's volatile east, a day after at least 130 people were killed in the deadliest clashes in months. The Congolese ambassador to the United Nations meanwhile renewed accusations that neighbouring Rwanda is helping the rebels, saying "specialised units coming from Rwanda" were supporting M23 fighters outside Goma. Accusations against soldiers and rebels, of women being targeted for violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The UN now threatens to stop cooperating if no action is taken. How serious a problem is rape in this war-torn country?
French/Nat The Congolese government says its troops chased rebels from their last stronghold in the southwest, dealing a major setback to an insurgency aimed at ousting President Laurent Kabila. Parts of Matadi were reportedly in flames as Angolan troops fighting on behalf of Kabila marched into the Congo River port over the weekend, after insurgent fighters reportedly airlifted their troops out in a hasty retreat. However in Goma the Congolese rebel commander Jean Pierre Ondekane claimed that he still had control of a third of the country and that on Sunday his forces had captured Kabila's home town of Moaba. GUNS FOR HIRE -- CONGO DRC is my second documentary about ex-military personel who work for PMCs, private military companies. Reporter Sam Kiley followed Conrad Thorpe who is an ex British Special Forces colonel. He got hired by the Congolese government to train anti-poaching units in the Virunga National Park. They are known as ICCN rangers (Institue Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature). After a decade of civil war this training is a desperate attempt to protect Congo's remaining endangered wildlife. Production Notes: The production of this film offered me the first opportunity to witness the aftermath of the various civil wars in the Eastern part of Congo DRC. At first sight, the natural beauty of the vast wilderness is breathtaking. But, at the same time, I was shocked by the...

While some places are on this list due to armed conflicts and violence, other places are on the list thanks to physical or biological calamities. Regardless of the reasons, the one thing all of these places have in common is that most western governments do not advise travel to them unless it is absolutely necessary. These are the 25 most dangerous places to visit as a tourist. Also, before we continue, just remember, being on this list doesn't necessarily mean the entire country is bad to visit (although it can). Just make sure to check on regional travel warnings. The Congo contains some of the most fascinating natural wildlife habitats in Africa. This fascinating country is home to a remarkable creature, the Mountain Gorilla. Our destination is the Virunga National Park that extends along the borders of the Congo, Uganda and Ruanda. Close to the border with Uganda is the village of Goma that contains several dwellings and a good market that displays an amazing variety of exotic fruit. After a short but very welcome break the journey continues in a four-wheel drive minibus but this does not last very long as it soon becomes necessary to travel by foot, a daunting prospect but also one inspired by the possibility of spotting the rare Mountain Gorilla in its natural habitat on a journey that will take around two days. The excitement continues to moun...

Kinshasa Capital city of Democratic Republic of Congo.
After finally receiving my scooter in Franceville, Gabon I made the trip towards the Congo. But again, it wasn't without any lack of drama. I had two flat tires before I even made it to the border. I was planning on hitting the sand road of the Congo by about 8am, but with the flats, and the fact I was in the middle of nowhere, I didn't hit the sand until about 1030. The sand road in the Congo was absolutely grueling. There were so many times driving the road towards Oyo that I just about quit and set up at the side of the road to sleep for the night. Following the sand day I crashed at the house of a Lebanese expat for the night and pushed on to Brazzaville. Two days later, and I arrive at the outskirts of Brazzaville, Congo. But my visa expires today, so what will I do? Stay tuned....

It is a deep dive into the heartland of Africa, into the mysterious Democratic Republic of Congo. A dream of many backpackers and often cited as a dangerous country to travel. Moving from A to B in the DRC is an adventure for outsiders and still challenge for locals and not everything is true about what comes into your mind for Congo. Yes, it still struggles for peace in its eastern region. The UN and other organizations trying to stabilize and support the country and as many refugees from other countries flood over the border, it is a challenge to be faced here. Despite all these efforts, for me Congo resembles still an authentic and real Africa off the beaten track. Rarely a visitor crosses into the DRC and while in Congo for little bit over three weeks, I only met two other travelers - ...

An amazing 6 months in Congo squeezed into a 4 minute video. Starting off in Yanika, to Pointe Noire, PNR- Dolisie draisine, Brazzaville, Pointe Indienne etc.
The Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa is one of the world’s most resource-rich countries. A wide range of rare minerals can be found here in abundance, all commanding high prices in world commodity markets. Diamonds for jewellery, tantalum, tungsten and gold for electronics; uranium used in power generation and weaponry and many others. Congo has copious deposits of raw materials that are in high demand internationally but remains one of the poorest countries in the world. From colonisation, with the horrors of slavery and other atrocities, to a turbulent and equally brutal present in which militant groups control the mines, Congo’s richness in natural resources has brought nothing but misery. Referred to as “conflict minerals”, these riches leave only a trail of death, destruction ...

The upcoming election 2017 may determine the future of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. After 15 years in power, president Kabila is no longer allowed to compete for election. However, the regime and the kleptocratic elite want to avoid the loss of power at all costs. This film documents the political situation prior to the elections and shows the ambivalent connections of government, UNO, development aid, mineral deposits and civil war. For over a decade only a view filmmakers dared to do such a comprehensive documentation about this country. Pictures of the local living situation are rare since the country is one of the most isolated and chaotic countries in the world. Writer and Director Dietmar Klumpp was investigating for this project over two years - six month of it in the Con...

Congo, get to, get to Congo
Get to, get to Congo
Get to, get to Congo
Get to, get to Congo
Now could we go to the square they call Congo?
I need to go and lay my feet upon the stone
Where the first of us stood before, before, before
Where we sat and played to revive our depleted souls
Where we went to forget our freedom was not our own
Where we went to hold onto the memories of way back home
Now could we?
Now could we?
Now could we go?
Get to Cong, get to Cong Congo
Get to Cong, get to Congo
Get to Cong, get to Cong Congo
Get to Cong, get to Congo
Now could we go to the square they call Congo?
I need to go and lay my feet upon the stones
Where the first of us stood before, before, before
Where we made music in remembrance of human bodies sold
Where the sound of an old pain became a new music of hope
Where they paved me a road so I could get to Congo
Now could we?
Now could we?
Now could we go?
Get to Cong, get to Cong Congo
Get to Cong, get to Congo
Get to Cong, get to Cong Congo
Get to Cong, get to Congo
Get to Cong, get to Cong Congo
Get to Cong, get to Congo
Get to Cong, get to Cong Congo
Get to Cong, get to Congo
And I would not be here today if they had not been
So displaced, so displaced, but still
But still they made time to sing and play a song
A song in Congo
Get to Cong, get to Cong Congo
Get to Cong, get to Congo
Get to Cong, get to Cong Congo
Get to Cong, get to Congo
