Paris

Paris (UK: /ˈpærɪs/ PARR-iss; US: ⁱ/ˈpɛərɪs/ PAIR-iss; French: [paʁi]) is the capital and most populous city of France. Situated on the Seine River, in the north of the country, it is in the centre of the Île-de-France region, also known as the région parisienne, "Paris Region". The City of Paris has an area of 105 km² (41 mi²) and a population of 2,241,346 (2014 estimate) within its administrative borders essentially unchanged since 1860.

Since the 19th century, the built-up area of Paris has grown far beyond its administrative borders; together with its suburbs, the whole agglomeration has a population of 10,550,350 (Jan. 2012 census).Paris' metropolitan area spans most of the Paris region and has a population of 12,341,418 (Jan. 2012 census), or one-fifth of the population of France. The administrative region covers 12,012 km² (4,638 mi²), with approximately 12 million inhabitants as of 2014, and has its own regional council and president.

Paris was founded in the 3rd century BC by a Celtic people called the Parisii, who gave the city its name. By the 12th century, Paris was the largest city in the western world, a prosperous trading centre, and the home of the University of Paris, one of the first in Europe. In the 18th century, it was the centre stage for the French Revolution, and became an important centre of finance, commerce, fashion, science, and the arts, a position it still retains today.

November 2015 Paris attacks

On the evening of 13 November 2015, a series of coordinated terrorist attacks occurred in Paris and its northern suburb, Saint-Denis. Beginning at 21:20 CET, three suicide bombers struck near the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, followed by suicide bombings and mass shootings at cafés, restaurants and a music venue in central Paris.

The attackers killed 130 people, including 89 at the Bataclan theatre, where they took hostages before engaging in a stand-off with police. Another 368 people were injured, 80–99 seriously. Seven of the attackers also died, while the authorities continued to search for accomplices. The attacks were the deadliest on France since World War II, and the deadliest in the European Union since the Madrid train bombings in 2004. France had been on high alert since the January 2015 attacks on Charlie Hebdo offices and a Jewish supermarket in Paris that killed 17 people and wounded 22, including civilians and police officers.

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) claimed responsibility for the attacks, saying that it was in retaliation for the French airstrikes on ISIL targets in Syria and Iraq. The President of France, François Hollande, said the attacks were an act of war by ISIL planned in Syria, organised in Belgium, and perpetrated with French complicity.

The images of the death of Brahim Abdeslam, 31, were captured by CCTV cameras at the Comptoir Voltaire brasserie on November 13th last year. It was the night that an IS cell brought carnage to the French capital , murdering 130 people at a number of venues across the city. Abdeslam, a French passport holder who was brought up in Brussels, is seen walking into the restaurant at 9.40pm, on a warm Friday night. Looking ashen faced and nervous, he wanders through the door after being dropped off by a car outside. The terrorist walks towards an empty table, before lowering his head, covering his head with his left hand, and then detonating his suicide belt. There is a puff of white smoke, and Abdeslam’s torso can momentarily be seen separating from the lower half of his body. There was so little left of Abdeslam’s body, that forensic officers had to rely on a tiny portion of finger print to identity him. The M6 channel in France took the decision to broadcast the footage on Sunday night, on the ‘Zone Interdite’ (Forbidden Zone) programme. Film was then released to the French media, with a warning that it was not suitable for young children, and then appeared on numerous news and social media sites. ‘The shocking images of M6 showing Brahim Abdeslam blowing himself up,’ was the headline in Le Figaro. As news of the attacks in Paris was breaking, Facebook launched a feature allowing its users to "check-in" and let their family members and friends know they were safe. It also introduced a feature that allowed users to overlay the colours of the French flag on their profile pictures to express solidarity with the victims of the attacks. These features prompted many to question a potential double standard: Where were they when dozens were killed in bomb blasts in Beirut a day earlier, or when 149 people lost their lives in Garissa, Kenya back in April? Critics accused the site of valuing the lives of Western victims more than those in the Middle East and other regions. Meanwhile, journalists covering the story were accused of making unfair accusations, using divisive terminology and xenophobic reactions. Given ISIL's objectives to sow discord and provoke repression, did the media play into ISIL's hands? Talking us through the story are: Habib Battah, an investigative journalist at Beirut Report; Professor Brian J Phillips from the Center for Research in Mexico; journalist Justin Salhani; Alain Gresh, an editor at Le Monde Diplomatique; and Washington Post journalist, Maura Judkis. Project History & More Info: Apparently, the average burglar spends around 8-12 minutes rooting through your personal items looking for anything of value. (According to the Chicago Crime Commission.) So I thought it would be fun to make a project turning an old jar of salad dressing, into an inconspicuous secret safe that’s completely hidden in plain sight. While I was surfing around on eBay, I came across a “Household Diversion Safe” (http://bit.ly/IBMayoSafe) that looked like a Mayo jar, and wondered if I could make something similar as a simple project? Rather than using Mayo though, I ended up using a Miracle Whip container, and experimented with different prototypes. I first tried using White-Out to paint the inside the jar, and while it worked pretty well, it was expensive and didn't look 100% convincing, because the salad dressing is a slightly off-white color. I went to the hardware store and got an “almond” colored spray paint, and after I applied it to a new jar, I found it was a near perfect match! You have to spray the paint on one thin layer at a time or else it will run. And it will probably take around 5-6 layers to get a good thick coating, so to save some time I tried using a hairdryer to blow each coating dry. On medium heat, the paint dries in about 45 -60 seconds, so I was able to apply 5 coatings in under 5 minutes. One word of caution though! Be careful with the high settings on the hair dryer, and be careful with how long you blow it, because the plastic jar will soften and the bottom will begin to warp. That will defeat the whole purpose! :) To get the “false bottom” effect, I went back to the grocery store with the jar, and played around with different containers to find one that might fit. Amazingly, I found that the cheapest cans of cat food were a perfect match, and the rim on the top prevents them from falling into the jar. The ones I got were only $0.69. The jar is a bit top heavy, so by adding some weight, or lining the edges with something like plaster of paris, you could mimic the weight of a real jar of salad dressing. And if you tried painting the cat food jar white, or found another container made of clear plastic that would fit, it may be even more convincing. For best results, try placing your container near the back of the fridge, mixed in with all the other condiments. This way it will be out of sight and out of mind, making it extremely unlikely that anyone will ever suspect it, or be willing to make the effort to pull out and check. There's no end to where you could take this idea. Ketchup bottles, mustard containers, or any other condiments.
