Disney’s Aladdin has “landed triumphantly in London’s West End” (Daily Telegraph). Featuring all the songs from the Academy Award-winning classic film, this “shining, shimmering spectacle” (Huffington Post) is everything you could wish for and more. The extraordinary creative team is led by director and choreographer, Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon). Music is by Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast) with lyrics from Howard Ashman (Beauty and the Beast), Tim Rice (The Lion King) and Chad Beguelin (Elf), who also wrote the book.
The lead roles of Aladdin and Jasmine are taken by rising British stars Dean John-Wilson (Here Lies Love) and Jade Ewen (In the Heights). Once the Musical comes to the Phoenix Theatre in London direct from Broadway having won an astonishing eight Tony Awards including Best Musical.
Once the Musical tells the story of an Irish busker, who is considering giving up, and a young Czech woman. Throughout the show they are simply known as the guy and the girl, they bond through their shared love of music and begin to writing together.
Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, who wrote the music and lyrics for the film, have composed the music for Once the Musical. They won an Oscar for the song Falling Slowly.

London Opera Centre
The London Opera Centre, a school for the training of opera singers and other opera professionals, existed in England between 1963 and 1977. It was located in the former Troxy Cinema on Commercial Road in London's East End Borough of Stepney (now Tower Hamlets). The Troxy, with 3,520 seats, opened in 1933 and was one of England's largest cinemas. As a result of wartime damage and the general decline of the area, the cinema closed in November 1960.
The English singer Joan Cross, an important figure in British opera at Sadler's Wells, who guided the company through the Second World War, and others had formed the National School of Opera in 1948, but its impact was limited due to little or no language teaching or technical stagecraft. (Nonetheless, its alumni included many successful artists such as Elizabeth Connell, Ava June, Marie Collier, Inia Te Wiata, Johanna Peters, April Cantelo and the D'Oyly Carte's Kenneth Sandford.)
By 1963, the Arts Council of Great Britain had provided a £27,900 grant to set up the London Opera Centre to provide musical and dramatic training to young voice students who were offered two-year scholarships. It was to be located in the Troxy and managed out of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden as a rehearsal space as well as an opera school. Among the most famous of the former students was the soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa who was offered an opportunity to study there between 1966 and 1968 after winning a major vocal competition in New Zealand. In addition, the Centre was used for other aspects of stagecraft and technical training, scenery construction and storage. A 500-seat theatre was created in the balcony for occasional performances, although rehearsal needs tended to take precedence over the Centre's needs for its own student performances.

Based on the great novel of the same name, it's set on an army base in Pearl Harbour in 1941 and tells the story of 2 great love affairs, army life and the toll that war takes upon them all. "AMERICAN PSYCHO" (performances through 1 Feb) A new musical thriller, American Psycho is based on Bret Easton Ellis' cult novel and stars, Matt Smith, of Dr. Who fame. The musical charts the story of Bateman, a Manhattan businessman who wears designer clothes, eats at expensive restaurants and parties at the hottest clubs. But, in private, he indulges in another kind of transgression that leads the people around him to disappear. American Psycho is directed by the venue's award winning Artsitic Director Rupert Goold with music by Spring Awakening's Duncan Sheik. DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS (performances from 10 March) The Broadway musical Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, based on the hilarious film starring Steve Martin and Michael Cane, is set to open in London this season! Once the Musical tells the story of an Irish busker, who is considering giving up, and a young Czech woman. Throughout the show they are simply known as the guy and the girl, they bond through their shared love of music and begin to writing together.
Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, who wrote the music and lyrics for the film, have composed the music for Once the Musical. They won an Oscar for the song Falling Slowly.

Recently had it's WORLD PREMIERE in London and was written by the Academy Golden Globe and Tony award-winning lyricist of the Lion King, Tim Rice.
Based on the great novel of the same name, it's set on an army base in Pearl Harbour in 1941 and tells the story of 2 great love affairs, army life and the toll that war takes upon them all.
"AMERICAN PSYCHO" (performances through 1 Feb)
A new musical thriller, American Psycho is based on Bret Easton Ellis' cult novel and stars, Matt Smith, of Dr. Who fame.
The musical charts the story of Bateman, a Manhattan businessman who wears designer clothes, eats at expensive restaurants and parties at the hottest clubs. But, in private, he indulges in another kind of transgression that leads the people around him to disappear.
American Psycho is directed by the venue's award winning Artsitic Director Rupert Goold with music by Spring Awakening's Duncan Sheik.
DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS (performances from 10 March)

Recently had it's WORLD PREMIERE in London and was written by the Academy Golden Globe and Tony award-winning lyricist of the Lion King, Tim Rice.
Based on the great novel of the same name, it's set on an army base in Pearl Harbour in 1941 and tells the story of 2 great love affairs, army life and the toll that war takes upon them all.

A new musical thriller, American Psycho is based on Bret Easton Ellis' cult novel and stars, Matt Smith, of Dr. Who fame.
The musical charts the story of Bateman, a Manhattan businessman who wears designer clothes, eats at expensive restaurants and parties at the hottest clubs. But, in private, he indulges in another kind of transgression that leads the people around him to disappear.
American Psycho is directed by the venue's award winning Artsitic Director Rupert Goold with music by Spring Awakening's Duncan Sheik.
DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS (performances from 10 March)
The Broadway musical Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, based on the hilarious film starring Steve Martin and Michael Cane, is set to open in London this season! This musical comedy stars the Olivier Award-winning actor Robert Lindsay, comedian Rufus Hound and Olivier Award nominee Katherine Kingsley.

Last autumn, the doyenne of jazz composers and bandleaders Carla Bley appeared on Jazz Now directing the Charlie Haden Liberation Music Orchestra. In this week’s programme, she returns with a group that’s she’s worked in for over two decades, and which released the album “Trio” in 2013, that has been widely acclaimed as one of her finest works. It was a pleasure to hear the Carla Bley Trio in such an intimate venue as the Pizza Express Jazz Club. Composer Carla Bley was at the piano, her partner, fellow American Steve Swallow, had his 5-string semi-acoustic electric bass and Englishman Andy Sheppard played tenor and soprano saxophones. Swallow has been a collaborator since the 1960s and Sheppard first played with Bley right at the beginning of his career in 1987. The three of them have been playing together as the Trio for more than 20 years, and this closeness is apparent from the outset.
They kicked off with Rut, a piece from Night-glo (1985) and immediately we were treated to an archetypal pared down Bley arrangement, with thoughtful piano and bass parts, and Sheppard’s lyrical sax flying over the top. Every note is considered and only played if essential, there are no throwaway pyrotechnics or self-indulgent solos; it is a distillation of jazz. Next was Ups and Downs from Duets (1988) which starts as a lovely waltz before diving Monkishly to and fro between three and four time. When the audience cheered at the end of this piece, Carla Bley stood up from the piano and said “I’m happy to be here too” and it felt that way.
Then came a suite from last year’s Andando el Tiempo CD – a long, serious and complicated piece, in three movements, about addiction. Sin Fin (never-ending); Potacio de Guaya, which Bley translated as “drink of grief”, then, hurrah, a happy ending. Camino al Volver (the way back). When it began I was reminded of The Ballad of the Fallen (1983) with its Latin American dance rhythms and syncopated descending runs. The piece continued in Bley’s category defying musical style, at times more contemporary art music than jazz. There was a lovely Nino Rota-ish piano and bass duet, then a section of repeated arpeggios from piano and bass in the manner of the west coast minimalists. After these two somewhat sombre movements came relief with a cheerful tune, more delicate counterpoint between piano and bass and those characteristic long warm notes from the sax optimistically climbing upwards again.
