Kurdistan /ˌkɜːrdɪˈstɑːn/ (Kurdish: [ˌkurdɪˈstan]; "Homeland of the Kurds or Land of the Kurds"; also formerly spelled Curdistan; ancient name: Corduene) or Greater Kurdistan, is a roughly defined geo-cultural region wherein the Kurdish people form a prominent majority population, and Kurdish culture, language, and national identity have historically been based. Kurdistan roughly encompasses the northwestern Zagros and the eastern Taurus mountain ranges.
Contemporary use of the term refers to four parts of a greater Kurdistan, which include parts of eastern and southeastern Turkey (Northern Kurdistan), northern Syria (Western Kurdistan), northern Iraq (Southern Kurdistan), and northwestern Iran (Eastern Kurdistan). Some Kurdish nationalist organizations seek to create an independent nation state of Kurdistan, consisting of some or all of the areas with Kurdish majority, while others campaign for greater Kurdish autonomy within the existing national boundaries.
Iraqi Kurdistan first gained autonomous status in a 1970 agreement with the Iraqi government, and its status was re-confirmed as an autonomous entity within the federal Iraqi republic in 2005. There is a province by the name Kurdistan in Iran; it is not self-ruled. Kurds fighting in the Syrian Civil War were able to take control of large sections of northern Syria as forces loyal to Bashar al-Assad withdrew to fight elsewhere. Having established their own government, some Kurds called for autonomy in a democratic Syria; others hoped to establish an independent Kurdistan.
Kurdish may refer to:

Iraq (/ɪˈræk/, i/ɪˈrɑːk/, or /aɪˈræk/; Arabic: العراق al-‘Irāq, Kurdish: Êraq), officially the Republic of Iraq (Arabic: جمهورية العراق Jumhūrīyat al-‘Irāq; Kurdish: كۆماری عێراق Komar-i ‘Êraq), is a country in Western Asia. The country borders Turkey to the north, Iran to the east, Kuwait to the southeast, Saudi Arabia to the south, Jordan to the southwest, and Syria to the west. The southern part of Iraq is within the Arabian Peninsula. The capital, Baghdad, is in the centre of the country and its largest city. The largest ethnic groups in Iraq are Arabs and Kurds. Other ethnic groups include Assyrians, Turkmen, Shabakis, Yazidis, Armenians, Mandeans, Circassians, and Kawliya. Around 95% of the country's 36 million citizens are Shia or Sunni Muslims, with Christianity, Yarsan, Yezidism, and Mandeanism also present.
Iraq has a narrow section of coastline measuring 58 km (36 mi) on the northern Persian Gulf and its territory encompasses the Mesopotamian Alluvial Plain, the northwestern end of the Zagros mountain range, and the eastern part of the Syrian Desert. Two major rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, run south through the centre of Iraq and flow into the Shatt al-Arab near the Persian Gulf. These rivers provide Iraq with significant amounts of fertile land.
The 2005 Constitution of Iraq defines Iraq for the first time as a federal country.
After the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in 1919, Iraq became a League of Nations mandate under temporary British control. Mahmud Barzanji led a Kurdish revolt against the British and in 1922 attempted to establish a state in northern Iraq. In 1924 the British defeated Mahmud, and the Mosul region was incorporated into the Kingdom of Iraq. After the British occupation, Kurdish leaders continued to press for autonomy within Iraq. In 1970 the Iraqi government agreed to create the Kurdish Autonomous Region covering three provinces of northern Iraq.
After the end of the Gulf War in 1991 the Kurdish region rose up against President Saddam Hussein and gained de facto independence under the protection of a no fly zone. After the invasion of Iraq in 2003, the short-lived Transitional Administrative Law recognised the existing Kurdish regional government and defined Iraq for the first time as a federal country.
Local government is a form of public administration which, in a majority of contexts, exists as the lowest tier of administration within a given state. The term is used to contrast with offices at state level, which are referred to as the central government, national government, or (where appropriate) federal government and also to supranational government which deals with governing institutions between states. Local governments generally act within powers delegated to them by legislation or directives of the higher level of government. In federal states, local government generally comprises the third (or sometimes fourth) tier of government, whereas in unitary states, local government usually occupies the second or third tier of government, often with greater powers than higher-level administrative divisions.
The question of municipal autonomy is a key question of public administration and governance. The institutions of local government vary greatly between countries, and even where similar arrangements exist, the terminology often varies. Common names for local government entities include state, province, region, department, county, prefecture, district, city, township, town, borough, parish, municipality, shire, village, and local service district.

The Kurdistan Regional Government in northern Iraq says the date to hold an independence referendum has been set and won't be changed. That was in response to a request by US secretary of state Rex Tillerson to postpone the referendum. During a telephone call on Thursday, Tillerson told Masoud Barzani that he favours dialogue instead, between the Kurdish region and the Iraqi government. The US and other Western nations are worried the vote, could lead to renewed conflict with the Iraqi government in Baghdad and distract the Kurds from fighting ISIL. Turkey, Iran and Syria which also have large Kurdish populations all oppose an independent Kurdish state. So, could this vote lead to an independent Kurdish state? and what will that mean for Iraq and the region? Presenter: Imran Kh...

An oil-fuelled economic boom has led to a dramatic rate of development in the capital of Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdish region over the past decade. Tall apartment blocks have sprung up along the side of the roads and many Kurds and visitors pass their time in large shopping malls. ''Day by day, one can see new developments - either at the level of construction or the establishment of nice malls," said Iraqi Azhar Hassan, one of the many domestic tourists attracted to the region. Their economic strength has enabled the Kurds to consolidate their autonomy and increase their leverage against the central government in Baghdad. (31 Aug 2017) Despite calls from Baghdad and the United States to postpone the vote, Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdish region is pressing ahead with plans to hold a referendum on independence September 25. Some officials within Iraq's Kurdistan Regional Government describe the vote as a step in pursuit of self-determination, but the lead up to the planned referendum has highlighted the region's lingering divisions and economic deficiencies. A referendum is to be held on September 25th for the independence of Iraq's Kurdish population. The United States and much of the Western world are urging for this vote to not go ahead. Find out what the main issues and fallout could be for Iraq and its Kurdish population in this video.

Long an island of stability in a Middle East marked by conflict, the Kurdish region of Iraq now faces a perfect storm. Its finances have been severely affected by the dramatic decline in the price of oil, its main source of revenue. The KRG also faces a constitutional crisis because President Masoud Barzani's term has ended without the Kurdish political parties finding a definitive way forward or agreement on succession. And the KRG's Peshmerga military force is engaged with the United States and its allies in an extended offensive to rout the self-declared Islamic State extremist group and liberate the nearby city of Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest. Amidst all of this, President Barzani also has indicated that the KRG will hold a referendum in 2016 on whether the region should seek independe...
We are delighted to host H.E. Masoud Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, hosted jointly by the Atlantic Council and the United States Institute of Peace on Wednesday, May 6, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Atlantic Council (1030 15th Street, NW, 12th floor). President Barzani's visit to Washington-his first in three years-comes at a critical moment. The Kurdistan Region of Iraq is fighting a full-fledged war against ISIS, while at the same time grappling with a gruesome refugee crisis and severe financial difficulties. The KRI's complex relations with Turkey and Iran, as well as with the Iraqi central government, are challenging as well. The region has significant oil and gas wealth, yet has struggled to monetize it because of disagreements with Baghdad over en...

The war with ISIS in Iraq is drawing to a close, but the day after will be no easier. With Iraqi Kurdistan going for an independence referendum, Baghdad may not be eager to accept the vote. The already volatile situation in the Middle East might be destabilized even further by the establishment of a Kurdish region – or, perhaps, help stabilize it instead. Will the price of Kurdish independence be too high? We ask Prime Minister of Iraqi Kurdistan Nechirvan Barzani. Among the polemics that followed the declaration of the Iraqi Kurdish leadership that they would hold a referendum on independence Sept. 25, 2017, there were three types of reactions in the Middle East: those who opposed the idea altogether, the waverers who sought to defer the referendum to another date, and the so-called well-wishers who warned of the catastrophic consequences for the Kurds and the region as a whole. Two dissenters also made themselves heard. In a provocative article titled “Four other Israels … or Kurdistan without Kurds,” the Kurdish writer Welat Muhammad takes issue with official discourse in Arab, Turkish, and Iranian states that depict the Kurdish endeavor to establish a state of their own as a project for establishing a second, or even four other, Israels in the r...

Syria has been at war now for five years. And in that time, the Kurdish Democratic Union Party or PYD, and its armed wing the YPG, have skillfully gained control of almost the entire northern stretch of the country. An area the Kurds call Rojava. Aided by US material support and air-strikes, they are seen as a key ally in the fight against ISIL. But the Kurds of Syria have been frustrated, as their victories on the battlefield have not translated into political gains. Shut out of UN-brokered peace talks in Geneva, they have chosen to go it alone. Declaring their intention to establish a federal Kurdish region in northern Syria. The Kurds say they are not pushing for independence. Rather, for a decentralised, federal model to be applied throughout Syria. But their plan is running into ...

The planned referendum on Kurdish independence will take place on September 25 and there will be "no turning back", said the 70-year-old leader in a wide-ranging interview aired on Wednesday. Talking to FRANCE 24's Marc Perelman in Erbil, the region's capital, Barzani brushed aside criticisms from his neighbours and allies, who have warned of the risk of a conflict with Baghdad at a time when Iraq is still battling against the Islamic State (IS) group. ...
At a time when Iraqi Kurdistan has been thrust into global news, this documentary explores the Region and its people from a unique personal perspective. ‘This is Kurdistan’ is a documentary inspired by the Kurdish people: their national pride, their indomitable resilience, their sufferings, their hospitality, their compassion, and their unbreakable hopes for the future. Their current struggle with ISIS and the refugee crisis that has followed is an all too familiar story of this regions past, a story that looks set to repeat itself. ------------------------------------------------------------ http://globalfirecreative.co.uk/ hello@globalfirecreative.co.uk If you have any questions, a project in mind or if you simply want to say hello then get in touch! The Iraqi Kurdish independence referendum is expected to be held on September 25. While countries like the US, Turkey, Syria, and Iran have opposed it, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly voiced support to the move by describing the Kurds “a nation of fighters who have proven political commitment and are worthy of independence.” Why is Israel taking a position that appears to clash with Washington’s preference? How would a potential independence of the Kurdish region impact Middle Eastern politics? Earlier this month, The Strategist, an analysis site of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, predicted in an article that China is ready for the “Space Silk Road” Initiative with a space information corridor being expanded, adding that China is ambitious for integrating suc...
