The Companions of the Cross give thanks to almighty God for the life and ministry of our beloved Founder. We are deeply honoured and wish to express our profound gratitude to His Grace, Archbishop Terrence Prendergast, SJ, for presiding at his funeral Mass. We also wish to thank the other prelates, priests and religious who have come from near and far to be present at this celebration. Thanks are also due to the musicians and choir members, led by Garth Pereira, for contributing with their talents to the beauty and dignity of the liturgy. Thank you to Michael Hanley and the Food for Life television ministry for providing video recording and broadcasting services. Finally, we deeply appreciate the presence of all the faithful, and all who unite themselves with us in praying that the promises made to Father Bob at his baptism may now be fulfilled, so that he may soon enjoy the "the glorious liberty of the children of God" (Rom. 8.21).

Beloved Founder of The Companions of The Cross, Fr. Robert (Bob) Bedard went home to The Lord at 10:17pm on Oct.6th, the vigil to The Feast of Our Lady, Queen of The Most Holy Rosary. These are the concluding moments of Fr. Bob's Funeral Mass celebrated by Archbishop Terrence Prendergast at Notre Dame Basilica in Ottawa on Weds, Oct.12 2011...
It was a grand event, a beautiful and joyful liturgy - the readings, the music, Fr. Scott's eulogy, everything form start to finish. It was a celebration of triumph in Christ and His CROSS -a strong affirmation to our faith and life in THE CROSS we share with Jesus and each other in our collective journey as the earthly pilgrims of Christ's Church, particularily here, in Ottawa, where Fr. Bob labored and laid down his life. The Church was packed to capacity and there was an overwhelming sense of us all present being united in CHRIST'S ONE SPIRIT OF LOVE on one same faith journey in Christ to our everlasting homeland.
Even in death Fr. Bob was shepherding us, evangelizing, inspiring, affirming and fathering us. We who had the great privilege of knowing him personally were today SO BLESSED by this final witness to us - the witness of a new saint eternally born to God in Holy Mother Church. HE MADE IT-HE CROSSED THE FINISH LINE WITH ST PAUL AND ALL THE SAINTS IN GLORY. In life and death, Fr. Bob pointed only to Jesus Christ, The Saviour of Mankind and True Lover of our souls. Fr. Bob remained single-minded and single-hearted in His love for Jesus and indeed JESUS WAS MAGNIFIED AND EXALTED TODAY, BY HIS GREAT FRIEND, HIS BELOVED SON AND ZEALOUS SERVANT PAR EXCELLENT, FR. BOB BEDARD
So we thank you JESUS and MARY for the gift of his whole life's witness to each of us, for knowing this holy priest, your precious child and true icon of Christ! All Praise and Glory and Thanksgiving be Yours THRICE HOLY TRINITY!
" PRESS ON", his favorite song, which was like his personal theme song, was sung as his body left the Church to go to it's final resting place at Hope Cemetery. Let us all then PRESS ON to attain that glorious inheritance and crown that Fr. Bob, no doubt, has won today in our presence.
May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace...Fr Bob pray for us!

Companions of the Cross
The Companions of the Cross (C.C.) is a Society of Apostolic Life based in Ottawa, Ontario. It is a community of Roman Catholic priests, which is Eucharistic, Charismatic, Marian and Magisterial. It was founded by Father Robert Bedard and was approved in 2003 by the Vatican as a Society of Apostolic Life.
History
Fr. Robert Bedard (1929-2011) was born July 17, 1929 in Ottawa, Ontario. He attended Corpus Christi School, St. Patrick’s College High School, and St. Patrick’s College. In 1951 he entered St. Augustine’s Seminary in Toronto and was ordained a priest on June 6, 1955. As a curate at Assumption Parish in Eastview (now Vanier), he was involved in youth ministry and formed a small group of young men aged 12 to 16 to encourage vocations to the priesthood.
While teaching at St. Pius X preparatory seminary, he attended Teachers College, Ontario College of Education in Toronto. In 1975 he was appointed official Ottawa Archdiocesan Liaison to the Charismatic Renewal, and from 1977 to 1981 he lived in a community household of men as chaplain of the New Jerusalem Community. He founded the Companions of the Cross in 1985 out of what had initially been a prayer group and support group for seminarians and priests that began informally in 1984. According to Ottawa Archbishop Terrence Prendergast, a Jesuit who invited the Companions to Halifax when he was archbishop there, Father Bedard's "...main thing was to support seminarians in their formation and support priests in their priesthood by community life.” Bedard stressed a model of companionship that sees priests serving several parishes living in community in one place.

Requiem
A Requiem or Requiem Mass, also known as Mass for the dead (Latin: Missa pro defunctis) or Mass of the dead (Latin: Missa defunctorum), is a Mass in the Catholic Church offered for the repose of the soul or souls of one or more deceased persons, using a particular form of the Roman Missal. It is frequently, but not necessarily, celebrated in the context of a funeral.
Musical settings of the propers of the Requiem Mass are also called Requiems, and the term has subsequently been applied to other musical compositions associated with death and mourning, even when they lack religious or liturgical relevance.
The term is also used for similar ceremonies outside the Roman Catholic Church, especially in the Anglo-Catholic tradition of Anglicanism and in certain Lutheran churches. A comparable service, with a wholly different ritual form and texts, exists in the Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches, as well as in the Methodist Church.
The Mass and its settings draw their name from the introit of the liturgy, which begins with the words "Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine" – "Grant them eternal rest, O Lord". ("Requiem" is the accusative singular form of the Latin noun requies, "rest, repose".) The Roman Missal as revised in 1970 employs this phrase as the first entrance antiphon among the formulas for Masses for the dead, and it remains in use to this day.

Hammered dulcimer
The hammered dulcimer is a percussion instrument and stringed instrument with the strings stretched over a trapezoidal sounding board. Typically, the hammered dulcimer is set on a stand, at an angle, before the musician, who holds small mallet hammers in each hand to strike the strings (cf. Appalachian dulcimer). The Graeco-Roman dulcimer (sweet song) derives from the Latin dulcis (sweet) and the Greek melos (song). The dulcimer, in which the strings are beaten with small hammers, originated from the psaltery, in which the strings are plucked. Various types of hammered dulcimers are traditionally played in Iraq, India, Iran, Southwest Asia, China, and parts of Southeast Asia, Central Europe (Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Poland, Czech Republic, Switzerland (particularly Appenzell), Austria and Bavaria), the Balkans, Eastern Europe (Ukraine and Belarus) and Scandinavia. The instrument is also played in the United Kingdom (Wales, East Anglia, Northumbria) and the U.S., where its traditional use in folk music saw a notable revival in the late 20th century.

FR. ROBERT J. BEDARD, CC Passed away peacefully surrounded by the prayers and presence of the Companions of the Cross, Servants of the Cross and friends at Carlingview Manor on October 6, 2011 in his 83rd year. Fr. Bob was born in Ottawa on July 17, 1929, attending primary school at Corpus Christi and high school at St. Patrick's College, graduating in 1948. He attended St. Augustine's Seminary in Toronto from 1951-55 and was ordained to the priesthood June 6, 1955 at his home parish of Blessed Sacrament. His first parish assignment was at Assumption Parish in Vanier from July 1955 until September 1958. His first teaching assignment was at St. Pius X Preparatory Seminary in 1958. He was made the principal there in 1961 and continued teaching at St. Pius X High School for twenty years. Fr. Bob was appointed official Ottawa Archdiocesan Liaison to the Charismatic Renewal by then Archbishop Plourde from 1975-78. He founded the Ottawa Renewal Centre and launched the Lamplighter newsletter from 1982-84. He spoke at many conferences on topics such as parish renewal and the Blessed Virgin Mary from 1982-84. In the fall of 1984 he was appointed pastor of St. Mary's Parish, Ottawa. In May of 1985 he founded the Companions of the Cross, a community of priests and seminarians. The Companions were established as a Society of Apostolic Life by decree of then Archbishop Marcel Gervais in May 2003. In May of 1990, Fr. Bob began devoting himself full-time to the leadership of the Companions of the Cross. In 1992 he began co-hosting the television program Food for Life. On September 28, 1997 he was awarded the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Cross by Archbishop Gervais in the name of Pope John Paul II. Fr. Bob was a pioneer in parish renewal and the new evangelization. He will be greatly missed by the community of priests and seminarians that he founded, as well as the Servants of the Cross and the many lay associates of the Companions of the Cross. He is predeceased by his parents Henry and Eileen Bedard and by his first cousin Jean Starrs. He is survived by his first cousins Catherine Starrs, Shirley McKenna (Gerroid), Audrey Kost and Elizabeth Coughtrey (Bruce). The Companions of the Cross community would like to thank the staff at Carlingview Manor and Fr. Bob's personal care team. Robert Bedard, CC, Founder of the Companions of the Cross, a Society of Apostolic Life in the Catholic Church, was entombed at Hope Cemetery, 4660 Bank St., Ottawa on Friday, May 4, 2012. Mass was celebrated by the Most Rev. Terrence Prendergast, SJ, at Fr. Bedard's tomb followed by the entombment ceremony. There was a reception held at Hope Cemetery following the Mass. The Companions of the Cross give thanks to almighty God for the life and ministry of our beloved Founder. We are deeply honoured and wish to express our profound gratitude to His Grace, Archbishop Terrence Prendergast, SJ, for presiding. We also wish to thank the other prelates, priests and religious who have come from near and far to be present at this celebration. Thanks are also due to the musicians and choir members. Thank you to Michael Hanley and the Food for Life television ministry for providing video recording services. Finally, we deeply appreciate the presence of all the faithful, and all who unite themselves with us in praying that the promises made to Father Bob at his baptism may now be fulfilled, so that he may soon enjoy the "the glorious liberty of the children of God" (Rom. 8.21). -

It was a grand event, a beautiful and joyful liturgy - the readings, the music, Fr. Scott's eulogy, everything form start to finish. It was a celebration of triumph in Christ and His CROSS -a strong affirmation to our faith and life in THE CROSS we share with Jesus and each other in our collective journey as the earthly pilgrims of Christ's Church, particularily here, in Ottawa, where Fr. Bob labored and laid down his life. The Church was packed to capacity and there was an overwhelming sense of us all present being united in CHRIST'S ONE SPIRIT OF LOVE on one same faith journey in Christ to our everlasting homeland.

These are the concluding moments of Fr. Bob's Funeral Mass celebrated by Archbishop Terrence Prendergast at Notre Dame Basilica in Ottawa on Weds, Oct.12 2011...
It was a grand event, a beautiful and joyful liturgy - the readings, the music, Fr. Scott's eulogy, everything form start to finish. It was a celebration of triumph in Christ and His CROSS -a strong affirmation to our faith and life in THE CROSS we share with Jesus and each other in our collective journey as the earthly pilgrims of Christ's Church, particularily here, in Ottawa, where Fr. Bob labored and laid down his life. The Church was packed to capacity and there was an overwhelming sense of us all present being united in CHRIST'S ONE SPIRIT OF LOVE on one same faith journey in Christ to our everlasting homeland.

FR. ROBERT J. BEDARD, CC Passed away peacefully surrounded by the prayers and presence of the Companions of the Cross, Servants of the Cross and friends at Carlingview Manor on October 6, 2011 in his 83rd year. Fr. Bob was born in Ottawa on July 17, 1929, attending primary school at Corpus Christi and high school at St. Patrick's College, graduating in 1948. He attended St. Augustine's Seminary in Toronto from 1951-55 and was ordained to the priesthood June 6, 1955 at his home parish of Blessed Sacrament. His first parish assignment was at Assumption Parish in Vanier from July 1955 until September 1958. His first teaching assignment was at St. Pius X Preparatory Seminary in 1958. He was made the principal there in 1961 and continued teaching at St. Pius X High School for twenty years. Fr. Bob was appointed official Ottawa Archdiocesan Liaison to the Charismatic Renewal by then Archbishop Plourde from 1975-78. He founded the Ottawa Renewal Centre and launched the Lamplighter newsletter from 1982-84. He spoke at many conferences on topics such as parish renewal and the Blessed Virgin Mary from 1982-84. In the fall of 1984 he was appointed pastor of St. Mary's Parish, Ottawa. In May of 1985 he founded the Companions of the Cross, a community of priests and seminarians. The Companions were established as a Society of Apostolic Life by decree of then Archbishop Marcel Gervais in May 2003. In May of 1990, Fr. Bob began devoting himself full-time to the leadership of the Companions of the Cross. In 1992 he began co-hosting the television program Food for Life. On September 28, 1997 he was awarded the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Cross by Archbishop Gervais in the name of Pope John Paul II. Fr. Bob was a pioneer in parish renewal and the new evangelization. He will be greatly missed by the community of priests and seminarians that he founded, as well as the Servants of the Cross and the many lay associates of the Companions of the Cross. He is predeceased by his parents Henry and Eileen Bedard and by his first cousin Jean Starrs. He is survived by his first cousins Catherine Starrs, Shirley McKenna (Gerroid), Audrey Kost and Elizabeth Coughtrey (Bruce). The Companions of the Cross community would like to thank the staff at Carlingview Manor and Fr. Bob's personal care team. The Rev. Robert Bedard, CC, Founder of the Companions of the Cross, a Society of Apostolic Life in the Catholic Church, was entombed at Hope Cemetery, 4660 Bank St., Ottawa on Friday, May 4, 2012.
Mass was celebrated by the Most Rev. Terrence Prendergast, SJ, at Fr. Bedard's tomb followed by the entombment ceremony. There was a reception held at Hope Cemetery following the Mass.
The Companions of the Cross give thanks to almighty God for the life and ministry of our beloved Founder. We are deeply honoured and wish to express our profound gratitude to His Grace, Archbishop Terrence Prendergast, SJ, for presiding. We also wish to thank the other prelates, priests and religious who have come from near and far to be present at this celebration. Thanks are also due to the musicians and choir members. Thank you to Michael Hanley and the Food for Life television ministry for providing video recording services. Finally, we deeply appreciate the presence of all the faithful, and all who unite themselves with us in praying that the promises made to Father Bob at his baptism may now be fulfilled, so that he may soon enjoy the "the glorious liberty of the children of God" (Rom. 8.21).

The Rev. Robert Bedard, CC, Founder of the Companions of the Cross, a Society of Apostolic Life in the Catholic Church, was entombed at Hope Cemetery, 4660 Bank St., Ottawa on Friday, May 4, 2012.
Mass was celebrated by the Most Rev. Terrence Prendergast, SJ, at Fr. Bedard's tomb followed by the entombment ceremony. There was a reception held at Hope Cemetery following the Mass.
The Companions of the Cross give thanks to almighty God for the life and ministry of our beloved Founder. We are deeply honoured and wish to express our profound gratitude to His Grace, Archbishop Terrence Prendergast, SJ, for presiding. We also wish to thank the other prelates, priests and religious who have come from near and far to be present at this celebration. Thanks are also due to the musicians and choir members. Thank you to Michael Hanley and the Food for Life television ministry for providing video recording services.
