Vieques (/viːˈeɪkᵻs/; Spanish pronunciation: [ˈbjekes], locally: [ˈbjeke]), in full Isla de Vieques, is an island–municipality of Puerto Rico in the northeastern Caribbean, part of an island grouping sometimes known as the Spanish Virgin Islands. Vieques is part of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and retains strong influences from 400 years of Spanish presence in the island.
Vieques lies about 8 miles (13 km) east of the Puerto Rican mainland, and measures about 21 miles (34 km) long by 4 miles (6 km) wide. Its one main town Isabel Segunda (sometimes written "Isabel II"), the administrative center on the northern side of the island. The population of Vieques was 9,301 at the 2010 Census.
The island's name is a Spanish spelling of an American Indian word (likely Taíno) said to mean "small island". It also has the nickname "Isla Nena", usually translated from the Spanish as "Little Girl Island", alluding to its perception as Puerto Rico's little sister. During the colonial period, the British name was "Crab Island".

Puerto Rico (English /ˌpɔːrtə ˈriːkoʊ/ or /ˌpwɛərtə ˈriːkoʊ/;Spanish: [ˈpweɾto ˈriko], locally also [ˈpwelto ˈχiko; ˈʀ̥iko]), officially the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico (Spanish: Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico, literally the "Free Associated State of Puerto Rico"), is a United States territory located in the northeastern Caribbean. Puerto Rico is an archipelago that includes the main island of Puerto Rico and a number of smaller islands. The capital and largest city is San Juan. The territory does not observe daylight saving time, and its official languages are Spanish, which is predominant, and English. The island's population is approximately 3.4 million.
Puerto Rico's rich history, tropical climate, diverse natural scenery, renowned traditional cuisine and attractive tax incentives make it a popular destination for visitors from around the world. Its location in the Caribbean, combined with centuries of colonization and subsequent migration, has made Puerto Rican culture a distinct melting pot of Amerindian, Spanish, African, and North American influences.

The U.S. Navy is the largest, most capable navy in the world, with the highest combined battle fleet tonnage. The U.S. Navy has the world's largest aircraft carrier fleet, with ten in service, two in the reserve fleet, and three new carriers under construction. The service has 328,194 personnel on active duty and 101,199 in the Navy Reserve. It has 272 deployable combat vessels and more than 3,700 aircraft in active service as of February 2016.
The U.S. Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy, which was established during the American Revolutionary War and was essentially disbanded as a separate entity shortly thereafter. It played a major role in the American Civil War by blockading the Confederacy and seizing control of its rivers. It played the central role in the World War II defeat of Japan. The 21st century U.S. Navy maintains a sizable global presence, deploying in such areas as East Asia, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East. It is a blue-water navy with the ability to project force onto the littoral regions of the world, engage in forward areas during peacetime, and rapidly respond to regional crises, making it an active player in U.S. foreign and defense policy.

Mosquito Bay or Bio Bay in Vieques, Puerto Rico is an amazing place. It is the brightest glowing bioluminescent bay in the world. I jumped on a few kayak tours during the night of a new moon and saw this incredible light show. Honestly, it was more amazing that I imagined. I had read a review or two, but wasn't sure if it was worth the trip to the island. It was. The bay is extremely bright, and until now, it was very hard to capture on camera. I recently picked up a Sony a7s which is a beast in low light, and was impressed with that it could capture. This has rarely ever been caught on Camera. The government is doing a good job at keeping this place pristine. In some areas of the world you can jump in, splash around, use gasoline engines, and generally just destroy the ecosystem these ...
I saw a lot of Vieques Island during the week that I did these photographs. But it's really just a taste of all there is to see and do there. Lying just 8 miles off the Puerto Rico mainland, Vieques may be small in size, but is overly generous in its features. And since it is 21 miles long by 5 miles at it's widest, everything is easy to get to, though I would recommend a jeep. Imagine visiting 1 or 2 different beautiful beaches every day, and sometimes have the entire beach to yourself.. Picture wild horses all over the island. Choose from lodging that ranges from a hostel to camping on the beach, to ultra luxurious accomodations. Satisfy your appetite at roadside stands or fine dining restaurants. No casinos. No raucous nightlife. And not a single stoplight. Hike, scuba, snorkel, boat...
W Vieques Island, Puerto Rico, one of the most beautiful and well done #luxury hotels that we have ever had the pleasure of visiting. While the lines and concepts seem simple, everything is purposeful. This place is very relaxing and enjoyable. I recommend this hotel highly if you want a place to rest, relax and recharge. #Honeymoon #Getaway #DestinationWedding #VowRenewal
Relaxing vacation with friends in Vieques, Puerto Rico. We had a great time snorkeling, kayaking, horseback riding, scootering, and generally checking out all the beaches and exploring this beautiful island off mainland Puerto Rico where wild horses roam free. Vieques is best known internationally as the site of a series of protests against the United States Navy's use of the island as a bombing range and testing ground, which led to the navy's departure in 2003. Today the former navy land is a national wildlife refuge, with numerous beaches that still retain the names given by the navy, including Red Beach, Blue Beach, Green Beach and others. The beaches are commonly listed among the top beaches in the Caribbean for their azure-colored waters and white sands. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...
http://www.democracynow.org - On the Puerto Rican island of Vieques, thousands are commemorating the 10th anniversary of when the U.S. Navy stopped using their home as a bombing range. Since the 1940s, the Navy used nearly three-quarters of the island for bombing practice, war games and dumping old munitions. The bombing stopped after campaign of nonviolent civil disobedience but the island continues to suffer. At the current cleanup rate, the Navy says, it will take until 2025 to remove all the environmental damage left by more than 60 years of target practice. A fishermen recently discovered a giant unexploded bomb underwater. The island of about 10,000 people also lacks a hospital to treat illnesses such as asthma and cancer that may be attributed to the military's former bombing activi...

Vieques travel Video. Measuring 21 miles long by 5 miles wide, Vieques is substantially bigger than Culebra and distinctly different in ambience. Though still a million metaphorical miles from the bright lights of the Puerto Rican mainland, the larger population here has meant more luxurious accommodations, hipper restaurants and -- unfortunately -- more petty thievery (particularly on the beaches). Vieques travel Video was where Puerto Rico's most prickly political saga was played out in the public eye. For over five decades the US Navy used more than two-thirds of the island for military target practice. The war games ended in 1999 after a misplaced 500lb bomb caused the death of a Puerto Rican civilian and set in motion a protest campaign that led to the navy's long-awaited withdrawal....
My trip to Puerto Rico was nothing short of amazing; it was better than I ever imagined. Isla Culebra was the most beautiful Caribbean destination that I have ever experienced. Flamenco Beach was a must see when traveling to Puerto Rico! Enjoy!
A little kid goes from
size one to size two
still we have same job
what is it that we do
all the change that's going on
in that tiny mind
still we're indecisive,
still we're wasting time
and there's cause, cause,
cause to be alarmed
who feeds the dove
who gives the world its charm
cause, cause, cause to be alarmed
we are pumped up fantasies
until the world's disarmed
a little hungry face
deserved more than roots to chew
they will erupt "enough's enough"
they'll lay the blame on you
and these perceiving minds observe
to count the final score
no treasure chest, to reinvest
just a bunch of whores
and there is cause, cause,
cause to be alarmed
no making love
until the world's disarmed
cause, cause, cause to be alarmed
a frigid little fantasy
until the world's disarmed
fly bird high bird
a love bird got shot
heard the lead bird's a dead bird
a new mind goes from birth,
to full view to old fool
still we have the same face
just what do we achieve?
all these minds that think alike
do damage to the strain
where we stand the very spot
we will not stand again
and there is cause, cause,
cause to be alarmed
who feeds the dove
who gives the world its charm
cause, cause, cause to be alarmed
we are pumped up fantasies
until the world is disarmed
fly bird high bird
go see bird and tell bird
that a love bird got shot,
