The animals found in the south eastern Australian State of Victoria are unique and diverse. Detailed descriptions of animals, maps of distribution, and endangered species status combine with stunning imagery and sounds to provide a valuable reference that can be used in urban, bush and coastal environments. The content has been developed by scientists at Museum Victoria, Australia’s largest public museum organisation.
The app holds descriptions of over 950 species encompassing birds, fishes, frogs, lizards, snakes, mammals, freshwater, terrestrial and marine invertebrates, spiders, and insects including butterflies. From animals found in rockpools, minibeasts in your garden, to wildlife you might see in the bush. We’ve put in a lot of species, but it’s still a fraction of the complete fauna of Victoria. Our scientists will continue to add additional species and refine descriptions over time.
This app is one of a suite of field guides for each state and territory, developed by Australia’s leading natural history museums.
If you have trouble either downloading the app or with the app crashing, please refer to our app support page (http://museumvictoria.com.au/discoverycentre/museum-victoria-apps/mv-field-guide-to-victoria-app/support/)

Useful but limited and LARGE Very useful to identify fauna around Parks, however could be more discoverable for users browsing. Viewing based upon the likelihood of that species being present in the area based upon those maps would be useful. Size of app an issue, even with the subset of species available. Due to photos being included? Load one identifying image with app (for offline use), however make available any additional images to downlaod to devices.

Amazing Truly an amazing app, even for its size; I only wish something like this would be created for North America.

Was great until upgrade! Loved the bird sounds, very useful on our latest trip, would easily have rated it 4.5 stars, although some more pictures would have been good. Today it upgraded and no longer worked, however I uninstalled it then reinstalled it and it seems to be working just fine. Now it has more animals and photos, brilliant value for money!

Love this App! Those getting crashes after update. Try uninstalling & doing a fresh install. Worked for me, though I'm still too scared to enter the settings menu ;) Problems before reinstall [Since the update, the app launched once then crashed in settings menu. Now it just crashes on launch, everytime. Please fix! I tried clearing cache & forced stop but no luck.]
Crashing Love the app, but also crashing on xperia p, 4.1.2 since the update. Happens when I press 'species' or 'groups' or try to update in the settings. Can search for species, but only the name of each animal appears. If I click on one it crashes. Look forward to it being fixed!
Crashes on Samsung G4 since update This used to be a cool app, but since the most recent update it crashes on opening using a Samsung G4 running Android 4.3 making it completely useless and a waste of expensive bandwidth. Don't download this version - wait for a fixed one.
First class design One small criticism, please ditch the annoying pop up and make sounds directly playable from the description. Also better integration between the apps in the suite would be great. Otherwise this is an awesome suite of apps, highly recommended.
Awesome but one cool thing to add This app is great! Very handy! Would be awesome if there was a tick box when you into a certain species to help keep track of new discovered species that youve found though
Oh no I can't believe I just wasted 20 minutes of my life updating this app. I can't access any part of it as it crashes on opening. I had no problems with the earlier version on my Samsung Galaxy SIII. Very disappointing :(
Toshiba AT1SO Android 4.04. Updated version crashes on opening. No issues with older version.
What a beautiful App and Project. The Update crashing had me a bit confused, but uninstalling and reinstalling it worked.
Crashing I can't do anything but open the app since the latest update. Please mend it. I love your app!
Crashing. App crashes when loading. Updated to latest operating system. Phone is Samsung S2.Tried reloading app but no good. Previous version worked ok.
Rather large but worth every megabyte. Not sure about the non venomous snakes, check with Brian Fry Qld Uni
No longer works Neat little guide to everything you could see in Victoria, used to work great, now doesn't run at all
In principle great app but crashing Was a great app, but crashes straight away on android 4.4.4 Waiting for fix!
Inadequate Very limited with the number of species included and continually crashes, both on my phone and my tablet.
Fantastic Fantastic, spent hours looking at it. But where is the corrella? I've just updated it and now doesn't work.
Excellent beginning! Wonderful resource that I expect will improve by many magnitudes in time. Tracks & Scats a info would be a great addition
I love this app, the birds and mammals are great but it's strange that there are no fresh water fish listed
I love it Only improvement I can think of would be to have the sub categories clickable instead of having to scroll through the other categories to find what I'm after.
Great for nature nerds :-) It's so great to be able to see an animal while out and about and be able to work out what it is and find out more about it.
Great A really handy app. Can't wait for it to be expanded. Particularly enjoy having the sounds associated with some species.
Fantastic App! Love the new update! (Had to uninstall and reinstall to get it to work though)
Best of its type Best app on my phone. Thank you very much to the people who made it.
Amazing amount of species. Info, pics and call sounds are awesome. Highly recommended
I'd give it a 5 if the distribution maps worked! Great little app for basic identification, I've found the bird call recordings particularly handy. It can be slow going as you search by species rather than area and I've never had a distribution map show.
I LOVE this app! Have been hangin out for it to be released for android since way back. If it had the following features it'd be heaven: an option to make the thumbnail pics larger in size (i'm using it on my mid-size phone and the thumbnails are too small for identification); the common name be included alongside the proper name on the pics; and a little more detail, eg. that x bird is not just a carnivore, but it mostly eats a, b and c. Well done all concerned.
Species included good info. Many left out. Really like not needing to be connected to net to use app. Love the calls that are included and the maps. Wish more species were covered.
Fantastic app This is a fantastic app, and so convenient for those weekend adventures. I'd love to see a feature that allows members of the community to sign up and upload photos of sightings into a gallery on each species listing and perhaps add sighting locations on a map using the GPS on each members phone.
Yay finally released on Android! Great general app. Pictures aren't comming up next to the names in the lists
