There's a saying that Koreans live off the strength of rice.
People greet each other by asking if they've eaten. Meals are more than just a way to fill an empty stomach — the carefully set table at each meal represents the culture of Korean life, and the Korean spirit.
Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, is an area famous for its rice. The tables here are packed with rice, soup, and various side dishes. In the past, kings were served with dishes made with ingredients from all over the country, and the tables here resemble the royal meals. Why do Koreans lay all the dishes on the table at once?
Since long ago, Koreans have been cooking with local specialty products. In Yang-gu, Gangwon-do Province, the specialty is siraegi, a food ingredient made by drying radish leaves in winter. In the past, Koreans would turn to siraegi to keep them full in hard times. Today it is a versatile ingredient used to make rice, soups, and side dishes.
Today, we explore the Korean table, reflecting Korea's past and present and consistent in its significance for Koreans from all walks of life.
평범한 일상, 밥상
한국인은 밥심으로 산다는 말이 있다.
인사 또한 "밥 한번 먹어요." 라고 말할 만큼 한국은 밥을 한 끼 식사 그 이상의 것으로 생각한다. 매 끼니 마주하는 밥상은 지극히 평범해 보이지만 그 안에는 한국의 의식주 문화와 정서가 고스란히 녹아있는 것이다.
경기도 이천, 이곳은 예부터 밥맛이 좋아 왕에게 진상될 만큼 쌀이 유명한 지역이다.
이곳에서는 밥과 국을 비롯해 여러 가지 반찬이 가득 차려진 밥상을 볼 수 있다.
옛날, 한국의 임금 또한 전국 팔도에서 진상된 최고의 식재료로 만든 수라상을 받았는데, 여기에서도 한 상 가득 차린 밥상을 볼 수 있다. 그렇다면 한식은 왜 음식을 한꺼번에 차려놓고 먹는 것일까?
전국 팔도에는 다양한 특산품이 생산되는데 오래전부터 조상들은 각 지역의 특산품과 기후조건을 활용해 다양한 음식을 만들어 먹었다. 강원도 양구는 해안분지로 이곳에서는 무 이파리를 말린 시래기라는 식재료가 있다. 시래기는 먹을 것이 없던 과거, 겨우내 끼니를 해결해주었던 식재료였지만 오늘날에는 시래기를 넣어 만든 밥부터 국, 반찬까지 다양하게 활용한 웰빙 음식으로 재조명받고 있다.

Arirang (TV network)
Arirang TV (Korean: 아리랑 TV; Arirang tibui) is an international English-language network based in Seoul, South Korea operated by the Korea International Broadcasting Foundation. The channel presents programs (including cultural features, documentaries and language programs) designed to give viewers a contemporary, accurate look at Korea, Asia and the world. The network's name, "Arirang", is derived from the traditional Korean folk song of the same name. Programming is available on the Arirang website, on YouTube, and on some TV providers.
The channel receives government subsidies; in 2011 these amounted to 30 billion won.
A related production, Arirang Radio, also broadcasts English-language content internationally.
Programming
Founded in 1996, the network airs news, cultural programs, educational shows and documentaries.
Among the network's longest-running shows is Arirang News, Showbiz Korea, Pops in Seoul and Heart to Heart. Arirang News is a current-affairs show providing coverage of domestic and international news. From Diplomacy Lounge and the talk show Heart to Heart seeing the country through the eyes of foreign diplomats and visiting international newsmakers. Although government-affiliated, Arirang retains independent-programming rights. The network airs programming about other countries, for culturally-diverse content; this includes culinary shows about global cuisines and public-service announcements in conjunction with UNICEF to combat world hunger.

Arirang
"Arirang" (Korean: 아리랑) is a Korean folk song, often considered as the unofficial national anthem of Korea.
In December 2012, South Korea's submission of the song was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity program by UNESCO. This was followed by the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea's announcement of a five-year plan to promote and preserve the song. The plan supports "Arirang" festivals by regional organizations with the purpose of building an archive for the song, promoting research grants, holding exhibitions, and so on. The song's first translation into singable lyrics in nine languages was performed in December 2013.
North Korea also submitted the song to the Intangible cultural heritage list and their submission was inscribed in 2014.
Etymology
Many versions of the song start by describing the travails encountered by the subject of the song while crossing a mountain pass. "Arirang" is one name for the pass and hence the title of the song. Some versions of "Arirang" mention Mungyeong Saejae, which is the main mountain pass on the road connecting Seoul and southeastern Gyeongsang Province during the Joseon Dynasty.

A high school (also secondary school, senior school, secondary college) is a school that provides adolescents with part or all of their secondary education. It may come after primary school or middle school and be followed by higher education or vocational training.
Terminology
The term "high school" originated in Scotland, with the world's oldest high school being Edinburgh's Royal High School from 1505. The Royal High School was used as a model for the first public high school in the United States, Boston Latin School founded in Boston, Massachusetts.
The precise stage of schooling provided by a high school differs from country to country, and may vary within the same jurisdiction. In all of New Zealand and Malaysia, along with most of Britain and parts of Australia, Bangladesh and Canada, high school means the same thing as secondary school, but instead of starting in 9th grade, these "secondary schools" begin at ages 11 or 12.

In Australia, high school is a secondary school, from Year 7 or Year 8 through to Year 12, varying from state to state. Simply K-Pop
Simply K-Pop is an English language show on Arirang TV featuring K-pop stars who perform on stage and interact with the audience throughout the show, offering an up-close and personal experience unlike any other music program. The show was originally called The M-Wave and was changed to Wave K in 2011. In 2012, the show's name was once again retitled to Simply K-Pop and is hosted by Eli Kim of U-KISS.
Currently does not have a fixed host, the program is presented by a random artist who also performs with his musical group in the same episode. The show is broadcast worldwide on Arirang TV every Friday at 9:00AM KST and available on Viki with subtitles in multiple languages.

北김정은, 트럼프연설에 성명…"사상 최고 초강경 대응 고려" North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has escalated his war of words with President Trump, threatning to take the "highest level" of response to Trump's words at the UN General Assembly. According to Pyongyang's top diplomat, that response could be a hydrogen bomb test in the Pacific Ocean. Kwon Jang-ho reports. The stakes in the tit-for-tat rhetoric between the U.S. and North Korea has been raised once again. North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un released a statement on Friday, condemning U.S. Prsident Trump's speech at the UN General Assembly, where he threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea if forced to defend itself or its allies. Kim said instead of making any remarks that could have defused tensions, Trump spouted "unprecedented rude nonsense" that caused "worldwide concern." He called Trump "mentally deranged" and a "dotard", meaning a senile old person. Kim said the U.S. President has insulted him and the regime and pledged to take the "highest level of hard-line countermeasures." The statement is an unprecedented escalation in rhetoric. It's believed to be the first time Kim, or any of his predecessors for that matter, has made such a statement in person on state media. However, despite this new precedent, one expert says it didn't come as a total surprise. (Korean - ) "Kim's grandfather and father, Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il, were charismatic and had authority. They wouldn't have dealt with this kind of situation themselves, they wouldn't have needed to. But Kim Jong-un's grip on authority is much weaker, so he HAS to show a strong response to Trump's comments. It just shows his limits." North Korea's top diplomat, Ri Yong-ho, who is in New York for the UN General Assembly, was asked about Kim's statement. (Korean - YTN) "In relation to Trump's thoughtless words, he said he would take the highest level of countermeasures. I believe that could be a test of our most powerful hydrogen bomb in the Pacific Ocean." Pyongyang already carried out a nuclear test earlier this month, which it claimed to be an H-bomb. But a detonation in the Pacific Ocean would be considered a massive step in provocations, especially as it would be outside of North Korea's borders. But for now, experts are skeptical such test will come any time soon.. And as such, it's the main way for many people in other countries to keep abreast of what's happening in Korea -- from news and culture to entertainment. But Arirang is calling for the government's attention -- because we won't have the budget to keep bringing you the programs you enjoy. Our Song Ji-sun explains (Stand-up) "It's been over two decades since Arirang TV - an affiliate of Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, started beaming Korea's culture and current affairs around the world. Now, it reaches well over 120-million households in a staggering 105 countries. But it's getting difficult for the station to carry on its duty due to worsening budgetary and funding issues." ( , , ) Despite the significance of Arirang TV, its budget is just 50 million U.S. dollars - far less than other global English broadcasters - at just a quarter of France 24's budget and one-tenth that of Deutsche Welle. Arirang TV has been sustaining its own funding since its foundation, filling in an annual deficit of around 4 million dollars, but now even that fund has run dry. To make matters worse, the government has slashed its budget by 8-million dollars. Joining the National Union of Media Workers' move to normalize public media, Arirang TV is calling on the government to prepare a long-term plan so that we can continue our vital role as an international broadcaster and better represent the country on the global stage. It is now time for the Korean government to secure a stable legal and financial footing for Arirang, so that the channel can create better content for global audiences and produce quality programs promoting the country and its cultural products such as the Korean Wave. There's a saying that Koreans live off the strength of rice.
People greet each other by asking if they've eaten. Meals are more than just a way to fill an empty stomach — the carefully set table at each meal represents the culture of Korean life, and the Korean spirit.
Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, is an area famous for its rice. The tables here are packed with rice, soup, and various side dishes. In the past, kings were served with dishes made with ingredients from all over the country, and the tables here resemble the royal meals. Why do Koreans lay all the dishes on the table at once?
Since long ago, Koreans have been cooking with local specialty products. In Yang-gu, Gangwon-do Province, the specialty is siraegi, a food ingredient made by drying radish leaves in winter. In the past, Koreans would turn to siraegi to keep them full in hard times. Today it is a versatile ingredient used to make rice, soups, and side dishes.
Today, we explore the Korean table, reflecting Korea's past and present and consistent in its significance for Koreans from all walks of life.

경기도 이천, 이곳은 예부터 밥맛이 좋아 왕에게 진상될 만큼 쌀이 유명한 지역이다.
이곳에서는 밥과 국을 비롯해 여러 가지 반찬이 가득 차려진 밥상을 볼 수 있다.
옛날, 한국의 임금 또한 전국 팔도에서 진상된 최고의 식재료로 만든 수라상을 받았는데, 여기에서도 한 상 가득 차린 밥상을 볼 수 있다. 그렇다면 한식은 왜 음식을 한꺼번에 차려놓고 먹는 것일까?
전국 팔도에는 다양한 특산품이 생산되는데 오래전부터 조상들은 각 지역의 특산품과 기후조건을 활용해 다양한 음식을 만들어 먹었다. 강원도 양구는 해안분지로 이곳에서는 무 이파리를 말린 시래기라는 식재료가 있다. 시래기는 먹을 것이 없던 과거, 겨우내 끼니를 해결해주었던 식재료였지만 오늘날에는 시래기를 넣어 만든 밥부터 국, 반찬까지 다양하게 활용한 웰빙 음식으로 재조명받고 있다.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has escalated his war of words with President Trump, threatning to take the "highest level" of response to Trump's words at the UN General Assembly.
According to Pyongyang's top diplomat, that response could be a hydrogen bomb test in the Pacific Ocean.

The stakes in the tit-for-tat rhetoric between the U.S. and North Korea has been raised once again.
North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un released a statement on Friday, condemning U.S. Prsident Trump's speech at the UN General Assembly, where he threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea if forced to defend itself or its allies.
Kim said instead of making any remarks that could have defused tensions, Trump spouted "unprecedented rude nonsense" that caused "worldwide concern."
He called Trump "mentally deranged" and a "dotard", meaning a senile old person.
Kim said the U.S. President has insulted him and the regime and pledged to take the "highest level of hard-line countermeasures."
The statement is an unprecedented escalation in rhetoric.
It's believed to be the first time Kim, or any of his predecessors for that matter, has made such a statement in person on state media.
However, despite this new precedent, one expert says it didn't come as a total surprise.

"Kim's grandfather and father, Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il, were charismatic and had authority. They wouldn't have dealt with this kind of situation themselves, they wouldn't have needed to. But Kim Jong-un's grip on authority is much weaker, so he HAS to show a strong response to Trump's comments. It just shows his limits."
North Korea's top diplomat, Ri Yong-ho, who is in New York for the UN General Assembly, was asked about Kim's statement.

"In relation to Trump's thoughtless words, he said he would take the highest level of countermeasures. I believe that could be a test of our most powerful hydrogen bomb in the Pacific Ocean."
Pyongyang already carried out a nuclear test earlier this month, which it claimed to be an H-bomb.
But a detonation in the Pacific Ocean would be considered a massive step in provocations, especially as it would be outside of North Korea's borders.
But for now, experts are skeptical such test will come any time soon..

北김정은, 트럼프연설에 성명…"사상 최고 초강경 대응 고려"
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has escalated his war of words with President Trump, threatning to take the "highest level" of response to Trump's words at the UN General Assembly.
According to Pyongyang's top diplomat, that response could be a hydrogen bomb test in the Pacific Ocean.
Kwon Jang-ho reports.
The stakes in the tit-for-tat rhetoric between the U.S. and North Korea has been raised once again.
North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un released a statement on Friday, condemning U.S. Prsident Trump's speech at the UN General Assembly, where he threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea if forced to defend itself or its allies.
Kim said instead of making any remarks that could have defused tensions, Trump spouted "unprecedented rude nonsense" that caused "worldwide concern."
He called Trump "mentally deranged" and a "dotard", meaning a senile old person.
Kim said the U.S. President has insulted him and the regime and pledged to take the "highest level of hard-line countermeasures."
The statement is an unprecedented escalation in rhetoric.
It's believed to be the first time Kim, or any of his predecessors for that matter, has made such a statement in person on state media.
However, despite this new precedent, one expert says it didn't come as a total surprise.

"Kim's grandfather and father, Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il, were charismatic and had authority. They wouldn't have dealt with this kind of situation themselves, they wouldn't have needed to. But Kim Jong-un's grip on authority is much weaker, so he HAS to show a strong response to Trump's comments. It just shows his limits."
North Korea's top diplomat, Ri Yong-ho, who is in New York for the UN General Assembly, was asked about Kim's statement.

"In relation to Trump's thoughtless words, he said he would take the highest level of countermeasures. I believe that could be a test of our most powerful hydrogen bomb in the Pacific Ocean."
Pyongyang already carried out a nuclear test earlier this month, which it claimed to be an H-bomb.
But a detonation in the Pacific Ocean would be considered a massive step in provocations, especially as it would be outside of North Korea's borders.
But for now, experts are skeptical such test will come any time soon..

The channel you're watching now, Arirang TV, is Korea's only worldwide English-language broadcast.
And as such, it's the main way for many people in other countries to keep abreast of what's happening in Korea -- from news and culture to entertainment.
But Arirang is calling for the government's attention -- because we won't have the budget to keep bringing you the programs you enjoy.
Our Song Ji-sun explains (Stand-up)
"It's been over two decades since Arirang TV - an affiliate of Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, started beaming Korea's culture and current affairs around the world. Now, it reaches well over 120-million households in a staggering 105 countries. But it's getting difficult for the station to carry on its duty due to worsening budgetary and funding issues."
( , , ) Despite the significance of Arirang TV, its budget is just 50 million U.S. dollars - far less than other global English broadcasters - at just a quarter of France 24's budget and one-tenth that of Deutsche Welle.
Arirang TV has been sustaining its own funding since its foundation, filling in an annual deficit of around 4 million dollars, but now even that fund has run dry.
To make matters worse, the government has slashed its budget by 8-million dollars.
Joining the National Union of Media Workers' move to normalize public media, Arirang TV is calling on the government to prepare a long-term plan so that we can continue our vital role as an international broadcaster and better represent the country on the global stage.
It is now time for the Korean government to secure a stable legal and financial footing for Arirang, so that the channel can create better content for global audiences and produce quality programs promoting the country and its cultural products such as the Korean Wave.

There's a saying that Koreans live off the strength of rice.
People greet each other by asking if they've eaten. Meals are more than just a way to fill an empty stomach — the carefully set table at each meal represents the culture of Korean life, and the Korean spirit.
Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, is an area famous for its rice. The tables here are packed with rice, soup, and various side dishes. In the past, kings were served with dishes made with ingredients from all over the country, and the tables here resemble the royal meals. Why do Koreans lay all the dishes on the table at once?
Since long ago, Koreans have been cooking with local specialty products. In Yang-gu, Gangwon-do Province, the specialty is siraegi, a food ingredient made by drying radish leaves in winter. In the past, Koreans would turn to siraegi to keep them full in hard times. Today it is a versatile ingredient used to make rice, soups, and side dishes.
Today, we explore the Korean table, reflecting Korea's past and present and consistent in its significance for Koreans from all walks of life.

이곳에서는 밥과 국을 비롯해 여러 가지 반찬이 가득 차려진 밥상을 볼 수 있다.
옛날, 한국의 임금 또한 전국 팔도에서 진상된 최고의 식재료로 만든 수라상을 받았는데, 여기에서도 한 상 가득 차린 밥상을 볼 수 있다. 그렇다면 한식은 왜 음식을 한꺼번에 차려놓고 먹는 것일까?
전국 팔도에는 다양한 특산품이 생산되는데 오래전부터 조상들은 각 지역의 특산품과 기후조건을 활용해 다양한 음식을 만들어 먹었다. 강원도 양구는 해안분지로 이곳에서는 무 이파리를 말린 시래기라는 식재료가 있다. 시래기는 먹을 것이 없던 과거, 겨우내 끼니를 해결해주었던 식재료였지만 오늘날에는 시래기를 넣어 만든 밥부터 국, 반찬까지 다양하게 활용한 웰빙 음식으로 재조명받고 있다.

A grand expedition across the Korean Peninsula!
Chapter 2 of the Arirang Special, "Borderless 1480" begins from the Tumen River to the East Sea, traveling the borderlands facing North Korea, China, and Russia.
Security was harsher and stricter in the Tumen River than that in the Amnokgang River. However, across the barbed-wire fence was an active interaction between North Korea and China. Faced with only 15km to the East Sea, the young group had to reluctantly turn its course around at Fangchuan, China.
However, the unfinished challenge began again in Russia, January 2016.
From Vladivostok that harbors the invisible economic competition among the three countries, to Kraskino, a place filled with pain and sorrow of the Korean diaspora as well as the Anti-Japanese independence movement, the expedition further traveled onto Khasan, a place budding with new relationships evident in the Rajin-Khasan project.
What is the message of these youngsters who continue to power through the cold, frozen East Sea?
Through this documentary, we re-think our definitions of borders through looking at the lives and history of the borderland people. We furthermore build and imagine the direction we need to take for a peaceful and prosperous future.
