Judy Davis (born 23 April 1955) is an Australian film, television and stage actress. An eight-time AACTA Award winner, she won two BAFTA Awards for her role as Sybylla Melvin in the 1979 film My Brilliant Career, and received Academy Award nominations for A Passage to India (1984) and Husbands and Wives (1992). She is also a three-time Emmy Award winner; for Serving in Silence (1995), the title role in Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows (2001), and The Starter Wife (2007).
As a student at the National Institute of Dramatic Art, Davis played opposite Mel Gibson in Romeo and Juliet. Her other stage credits include Piaf (Perth 1980), Insignificance (London 1982), the title role in Hedda Gabler (Sydney 1986), and Hapgood (Los Angeles 1989). Her other film roles include Winter of Our Dreams (1981), Heatwave (1983), High Tide (1987), Impromptu (1991), Naked Lunch (1991), Absolute Power (1997), Deconstructing Harry (1997), The Break-up (2006), The Eye of the Storm (2011) and The Dressmaker (2015).

Plot: This is a true crime story based on the book of the same title by prosecuting attorney, Vincent Bugliosi. (Bugliosi is the L.A. prosecutor that put Charles Manson away.) On December 11, 1966, a murder occurs in a small neighborhood of El Sereno, CA. In the middle of the night, Henry Stockton is shot three times in the head and twice in the chest and then his house is set on fire. The murderer left no clues, baffling the police, until a year later when a young pregnant woman is found bludgeoned to death in a Jaguar. Strangely, these two murders are related. As the mystery unfolds a horrific tale of greed, lust and ambition are revealed.

Plot: The first of a proposed series called The Big Town Girls finds big-town girls Judy Davis ('June Lang (I)' (qv)) and Terry Wilson ('Lynn Bari' (qv))stranded in Hawaii after losing their jobs in a local night club. Then Terry loses all their money in a game of chance. They meet and are dined by Maurice Leon ('Erik Rhodes (I)' (qv)) who tells them he is a famous jewel thief and attempts to enlist their aid in stealing the famous "Ka-meha-mega" diamond from Homer Watson ('Gene Lockhart' (qv))who is sailing the next day on the "Maori." They refuse but board the ship on the chance of finding something to eat at some passenger's "bon-voyage" party. THey get more to drink than eat, with the result the ship sails with them still on board. When discovered, the ship's captain ('Harlan Briggs' (qv))puts them to work---Judy as a chambermaid and Terry as a manicurist. The girls see Maurice steal the diamond from Watson's cabin and tell the captain. Then the complications begin, with Judy and Terry being accused of the theft.

Sybylla Melvyn is an independent young woman who soon after arriving to live with her Grandmother Bossier and aunt Helen announces that she will never marry and plans on having a career instead. She does attracts the interest of several suitors. The bumbling Englishman Frank Hawdon has only been in Australia for three months and proposes that she return home with him as his wife. She rejects him out of hand telling her grandmother that she does not love him. Then there's her neighbor, the handsome young farmer Harry Beecham, who she is attracted to and eventually accepts his proposal. Time passes however and in the end refuses to marry him while she seeks to become a writer.
A ten-year-old cartographer secretly leaves his family's ranch in Montana where he lives with his cowboy father and scientist mother and travels across the country aboard a freight train to receive an award at the Smithsonian Institute.
