The Bay of Biscay /ˈbɪskeɪ, -ki/ (Spanish: Golfo de Vizcaya, French: Golfe de Gascogne) is a gulf of the northeast Atlantic Ocean located south of the Celtic Sea. It lies along the western coast of France from Brest south to the Spanish border, and the northern coast of Spain west to Cape Ortegal.
The average depth is 1,744 metres (5,722 ft) and the greatest depth is 4,735 metres (15,535 ft).
The Bay of Biscay is named (for English speakers) after Biscay on the northern Spanish coast, probably standing for the western Basque districts (Biscay up to the early 19th century). Its name in other languages is:
Parts of the continental shelf extend far into the bay, resulting in fairly shallow waters in many areas and thus the rough seas for which the region is known. The Bay of Biscay is home to some of the Atlantic Ocean's fiercest weather. Large storms occur in the bay, especially during the winter months. Up until recent years it was a regular occurrence for merchant vessels to founder in Biscay storms.
Biscay (in Basque and officially Bizkaia and in Spanish Vizcaya) is a province of Spain located just south of the Bay of Biscay. The name also refers to a historical territory of the Basque Country, heir of the ancient Lordship of Biscay. Its capital city is Bilbao. It is one of the most prosperous and important provinces of Spain as a result of the massive industrialization in the last years of the 19th century and first half of the 20th century. Since the deep deindustrialization of the 1970s, the economy has come to rely more on the services sector.
It is accepted in linguistics (Koldo Mitxelena, etc.) that Bizkaia is a cognate of bizkar (cf. Biscarrosse in Aquitaine), with both place-name variants well attested in the whole Basque Country and out meaning 'low ridge' or 'prominence' (Iheldo bizchaya attested in 1141 for the Monte Igueldo in San Sebastián).
“Bizkaia” is the Basque denomination recommended by the Royal Academy of the Basque language, and it is commonly used on official documents on that language. It is also used on documents in Spanish, and it is the most used denomination by the media in Spanish in the Basque Country. It is also the denomination used in the Basque version of the Spanish constitution and in the Basque version of the Statute of Autonomy of the Basque Country.
We were on the Independence of the Seas April and we're caught in a Force 12.The captain put up a map on the tv screens to show us we were in the 'Red' Force 12 section. This doesn't do it justice tho look at one of the waves at the end.It was like being at the Gates of Hell, I wobbled down the stairs and there was this tremendous 'CRACK' and it felt like the ship had torn in two.Duty free was flying round the shop, some dear old lady threw up her (saved for months) cruise breakfast in front of my aunt and was so embarrassed.No-one could go on deck and the wind howled like nothing I've heard before.Even worse was the fact that when I went into Johnny Rockets I put on 'Night Fever' to watch the waiters do a dance in the storm but they refused
Found the storm (from 8 to 10 points) in the Bay of Biscay. We go from the Netherlands to Italy. Vessel length of 100 m, width 12 m.
Videos of various manoeuvres of a ship in port. Kindly watch other videos that I have Uploaded. Thanks.

Rogue wave encountered in the Bay of Biscay on oil/chemical tanker Pink Coral in mid February 2014. Ship was sailing on its way to Rotterdam when this huge irregular wave came across our way from our beam. L.E.: Just for clarification, the first 30 seconds contain the rogue wave, the rest is just random footage. I just added english subtitles to the video if you were aching to know what we were speaking.
Rough seas in Bay of Biscay May 2014 on Emerald Princess
Our first major sail and it was across the Bay Of Biscay. 55hrs. We weren't feeling the best with fairly tough conditions for us, so please excuse the limited footage. Rocking and rolling! For more detail please follow us at scoutaroundtheworld.com
On April 25th 2012 P&O; Cruises, Oceana sailed through the Bay of Biscay heading towards the Med. There was a huge swell mixed with Force 10-11 winds. This video was shot from P&O; Ventura by Andy. I was actually onboard Oceana at the time filming Ventura as she went in the opposite direction and can say the movement was like nothing I have ever felt before, I barely came across another passenger for 24 hours. Our Captain said it was the worst he had experienced in many years. You can find the video I shot of Ventura a little further through my list and a big thank you to Andy for sending me the footage of Oceana. Trust me, I felt that big wave!!! ;)

Highlights of this delightful city on the Bay of Biscay in northern Spain.
On 23rd April 2012, Royal Caribbean cruise ship 'Independence of the Seas' encountered a severe gale in the Bay of Biscay as the ship sailed south bound for Madeira. There were winds gusts of up to gale force 12, far more severe than anticipated.
Take the opportunity to see whales and dolphins whilst onboard with Brittany Ferries as you cruise through the Bay of Biscay to northern Spain. With dedicated whale watching cruises and ORCA Wildlife Officers onboard the Cap Finistére throughout the summer there is plenty of opportunities to see these magnificent creatures.
A clip of San Sebastian, in Northern Spain, from the hillside above the harbor and above the city, just an hour after a rain storm had blown in from the Atlantic Ocean/ Bay of Biscay. Beautiful city, one of many stops on the 2013 Pipedreams pipe organ tour.
The homeland of the proud and resilient Basque people is split between France and Spain. From our San Sebastián home base, we tour the ancient Basque capital of Guernica, the dazzling Guggenheim Bilbao, and then cross into France for more Basque Country charms. From yummy tapa bars to lightning-fast jai alai games, we'll experience Basque culture at its most vivid. © 2010 Rick Steves' Europe

In the wildest storm you go and set your sail
Someone's waiting in the stomach of a whale
I would do anything
I would do anything to get you off from staring at the waves
Bay of Biscay
Bay of Biscay
Deeper in the blue you're diving down
Like it doesn't really matter if you drown
You would do anything
You would do anything to get to throw yourself into the waves
Bay of Biscay
Bay of Biscay
The jabone of a tiger shark
The ten tentacles of a giant squid
The depths are calling
The depths are calling into the Bay of Biscay
We could have been friends forever, friends forever
Eternally stick together, stick together
We'd drag each other to the shore
We could have been friends forever, friends forever
I would do anything
I would do anything to get you back from the Bay of Biscay
Get caught by the jabone of a tiger shark
The ten tentacles of a giant squid
