Staff Picks

This dwarf bearded Iris is known as ‘Cat’s Eye’. Check out that tongue! These colors are everything right now. See them for yourselves in the Children’s Garden. – Jen, horticulturist

Many people dismiss Ajuga as being a lawn-invading, common garden plant. I, on the other hand, adore many Ajuga varieties as wonderful foliage accent plants and amazing edgers. I now have four varieties I’ve planted here in my gardens at CMBG, but by far the happiest, and currently most stunning, is Ajuga reptans ‘Pink Lighting.’ Planted right along a path in the Arbor Garden, this beauty is in flower right now but has gorgeous variegated pink and green foliage throughout the entire season. It’s drought tolerant nature makes it perfect for edging on our bluestone paths, and helps keep little (and big) feet out of the garden bed. – Syretha, horticulturist

Our bees are loving this White Tree Peony (Paeonia suffruticosa) by the steps leading up the Cleaver Event Lawn. – Anna, horticulturist

It’s so exciting to see the very first (of many) blooms on the floriferous Clematis montana. It is being trained to climb the tool arbor in the Bibby and Harold Alfond Children’s Garden. A sweet scent fills the air with this one. – Jen, horticulturist

Malus ‘Prairie Fire’ (Prairie Fire Flowering Crabapple) is a delight just off the Café Terrace seating area. The color of its blooms are a suffused deep watermelon-raspberry, with a glowing pink/soft red. – Diane, horticulturist

What’s in Bloom – May 26, 2017

Staff Picks

Right now the plant that I get asked about the most is Fritillaria persica. This tall, perennial bulb can be found in a number of locations around the gardens, including around the Great Lawn and in the Burpee Kitchen Garden. The deep purple, almost black blossoms are pendulous and numerous, and this ephemeral plant makes a great addition to any garden! – Syretha, horticulturist

Dodecatheon clevelandii (Padre’s Shootinstar) of the primrose family is native to California, but happy grows by the bridge in the Lerner Garden of the Five Senses. – Anna L., horticulturist

Jack in the pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum ssp. stewardsonii ‘Wide Whale Corduroy’) is one of the shade loving plants in the Children’s Garden. Going back centuries as a mysterious and poisonous flower, Native Americans actually found ways to dry and eat the root! Don’t try at home though, as the roots have millions of calcium oxalate crystals that can cause severe blistering when touched. Keep an eye out for the beautiful berries, but do not eat! – Tobi, public horticulture intern

A native to Eastern Asia, this early season woodland peony (Paeonia obovata ssp.) offers a beautiful detailed white flower in the Lerner Garden! – Sarah S., horticulturist

Stewartsonian azalea in the Giles Rhododendron Garden next to the waterfall is a crazy scarlet red color! – Courtney, horticulturist

This large beauty is Rhododendron ‘Hal Bruce,’ found to the right of the lower entrance to the Giles Rhododendron Garden. The gorgeous peach-colored blossoms are coming out, and are not to be missed! – Leah, public horticulture intern

‘Mood Indigo’ tulips are still looking wonderful in the Lerner Garden. – Will, horticulturist

Hellebore Heronswood Double Dark Lenton Rose is beautiful in the Vayo Mediation Garden – Patty, horticulturist

A true perennial from the rocky dry alpine regions of central Asia, Tuplia tarda is tolerant of our continental climate (hot summer, cold winter). These are located in the Giles Rhododendron Garden. – Dan, horticulturist

This Himalayan Mayapple (Podophyllum hexandrum ‘Majus’) adds an exotic touch to the garden. I love the umbrella shaped leaves which have a glossy appearance and add textual variety to the garden. The large white flowers pop in contrast to the foliage. I just have to stop and admire this bloom in the Children’s Garden! – Siubhan, public horticulture intern

Rhododendron Solidarity in Giles Rhododendron Garden to the left of waterfall has beautiful fuchsia buds and softer pink flowers. – Courtney, horticulturist

This Paeonia mlokosewitschii ‘Red Form’ peony offers a splash of red color as you move about the Lerner Garden that really catches the eye! – Sarah S., horticulturist

Rare Plants at the Gardens

Thursday, July 28th, 2016

I recently had the pleasure of teaching a class about plants that are rare in the wild here in Maine, yet are easily accessible for study in the cultivated collection here in our Gardens. One of the wonderful things about working and teaching at a botanical garden is that plants of disparate habitats and ranges are brought together so they can be studied, observed, and compared to other plants more easily. This, in fact, was one of the original reasons early botanical gardens were established.

During our day together, I was able to introduce students to twenty-four plants that are rare in Maine or elsewhere in New England. While (especially to a botanist) there’s nothing as special as seeing a rare species in its own habitat in the wild, it’s nonetheless very instructive and fascinating to learn to recognize a rare species in cultivation. Not to mention – it’s super-efficient to observe and learn a species from a salt marsh, an evergreen seepage swamp, dry rocky barrens, and rich mesic forest all in one afternoon!

Here are some examples of rare plants we saw here at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens during our class:

Iris prismatica detail, (c) dogtooth77
Slender Blue Flag (Iris prismatica; Maine State Status: Threatened) graces a wet swale of the Haney Hillside Garden. In the wild, it’s found at the upper reaches of salt marshes in southern Maine and southward.

sm Ceanothus americanus New Jersey Tea
New Jersey Tea (Ceanothus americanus; Maine State Status: Threatened) growing along the sunny edge Birch Allee. In the wild, it grows on dry sandy banks, balds and in open woodlands in southern Maine and southward.

R&E-ShowyLadysSlipper
Showy Lady’s Slipper (Cypripedium reginae; Maine State Status: Special Concern) is thriving along the edge of the Slater Forest Pond. In the wild, it’s found in non-acidic peatlands and mossy woodlands.

R&E-Dryopterisfilix-mas
Male Fern (Dryopteris filix-mas; Maine State Status: Endangered) at the edge of the Haney Hillside Garden’s path. In the wild, it grows in rich glades and rocky slopes of Maine’s interior forests.

Please join us for more opportunities to learn about the rare plants of Maine during our year celebrating “Rare and Extraordinary Plants!” Coming up next, Maine Natural Areas Program botanist Don Cameron will lead a trip to see the rare North Blazing Star (Liatris novae-angliae; Maine State Status: Endangered) in glorious bloom at the Kennebunk Plains Preserve on August 30th.

— Melissa Cullina, director of education

Please note: Our cultivated rare plants are never collected from the wild; rather, we purchased responsibly-propagated stock.
