Wajid Ali Shah confronts his courtiers regarding their administration, Shatranj Ke Khilari (1977)
Wajid Ali Shah was the fifth King of Oudh, holding the position from 13 February 1847 to 11 February 1856.
He was the tenth and last Nawab of the state of Awadh in present day Uttar Pradesh in India. He ascended the throne of Awadh in 1847 and ruled for nine years. His kingdom, long protected by the British under treaty, was eventually annexed bloodlessly on 11 February 1856, 2 days before the ninth anniversary of his coronation. The Nawab was exiled to Garden Reach in Metiabruz, then a suburb of Kolkata, where he lived out the rest of his life off a generous pension. He was a poet, playwright, dancer and great patron of the arts. He is widely credited with the revival of Kathak as a major form of classical Indian dance.

Although playback recording was very much in vogue at the time, K.L. Saigal (who sang for himself) convinced director Phani Majumdar that the song 'Babul mora...' should be recorded live while it was being filmed. So Saigal sang on the streets with the entire orchestra playing as the song was being filmed for the movie.
Storyline :-
The film's story tells of two childhood friends, Bhulwa (Saigal) and Manju (Kanan Devi), who grow up to become street singers in Calcutta. Bhulwa dreams of becoming a stage star but it is Manju who succeeds. At the height of her fame Manju almost forgets Bhulwa until at the end - in an obviously symbolic landscape (literally showing a boat washed ashore in a storm) the two are united. Written by Sujit R. "Street Singer" (1937) is one of the earliest Hindi movie after movies started talking in 1931. This movie had K L Saigal, Kanan Devi, Jagdish Sethi, Bikram Kapoor, Nirman, Satya Mukherji etc. This movie was produced by New Theatre of Calcutta and it was directed by Phani Majumdar.
Street Singer (1938) is a landmark creation from New Theatres, Calcutta. Directed by the legendary Phani Majumdar, the star cast of this movie includes KL Saigal, Kaanan Devi. Bikram Kapoor, Subeer, Jagdeesh, Boken Chatto, Chamanlal, Abdul Rehman, Ram Kumari, Nirmal Bannerjee etc. The movie has as many as thirteen songs. The lyrics are created by Aarzoo Lucknowi, and the music composition is by another legend, RC Boral. Four of the more famous and familiar songs are already discussed on this blog, including the inimitable "Baabul Moraa Naihar Chhooto Hi Jaaye". This song is a duet sung by Saigal Saab and Kaanan Devi.
The theme of this movie is a poignant story about two childhood friends, who are musically inclined, and grow up as a pair of street singers in the city of Calcutta. Kaanan Devi plays the role of Manju, a young lady with a very sonorous voice. Saigal Saab plays the role of Bhulwaa, the one with a deep understanding of music, who is a mentor and guru to Manju. Bhulwaa creates and both of them sing on the streets. The duo are noticed by a theatre owner, and they get a chance to play on the stage. As fortune would have it, it is Manju who gets the limelight and the attention. Bhulwaa slowly fades from the scene as Manju is loving the popularity and her moments in the sun, basking to her heart's pleasure. Bhulwaa's dreams are broken, and there is a distancing between the two. Manju almost becomes unmindful of their childhood association, and the mentoring and music lessons she got from Bhulwaa, that have made her what she is today. Bhulwaa leaves with his broken harmonium (and that is when the famous 'Baabul Moraa' song is played). But the separation and distance brings out the actual feelings the two have always had for each other, as an undercurrent to the childhood friendship. And the two are united once again at the end in very dramatic circumstances -- the final scenes show a boat being washed ashore in a storm, symbolizing the ship of their association, weathering the stormy seas of this material world, and yet finding the safety of the shores of love and affection.
This song starts with the two friends in their childhood, and the first part of the song is actually sung by other child artists whose names are no longer available. Very soon the picturization transitions to the time when the two friends are now grown up. They now go about in the streets, singing for making a living. Most of the movie, one can see Bhulwaa with the harmonium, an association that he nurtures with lot of emotion and love, and does not want to part with it. As a Nawab
Wajid Ali Shah succeeded to the throne of Awadh when its glory days were at its peak and passing. The British had annexed much of the kingdom under the treaty of 1801, and had impoverished Awadh by imposing a hugely expensive, British-run army and repeated demands for loans. The independence of Awadh in name was tolerated by the British only because they still needed a buffer state between their presence in the East and South, and the remnants of the Mughal Empire to the North.

Ali ibn Abi Talib (/ˈɑːli, ɑːˈliː/;Arabic: علي بن أبي طالب, translit. ʿAlī bin Abī Ṭālib, Arabic pronunciation: [ʕaliː bɪn ʔabiː t̪ˤaːlɪb]; 13 Rajab, 21 BH – 21 Ramadan, 40 AH; 15 September 601 – 29 January 661) was the cousin and son-in-law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, ruling over the Islamic caliphate from 656 to 661.
Born to Abu Talib and Fatima bint Asad, Ali was the only person born in the sacred sanctuary of the Kaaba in Mecca, the holiest place in Islam, as many sources, especially Shia ones say. Ali was the first young male who accepted Islam. After migrating to Medina, he married Muhammad's daughter Fatimah. Ali took part in the early caravan raids from Mecca and later in almost all the battles fought by the nascent Muslim community. He was appointed caliph by Muhammad's Companions (Sahaba) in 656, after caliph Uthman ibn Affan was assassinated. Ali's reign saw civil unrest and in 661, he was attacked and assassinated by a Kharijite while praying in the Great Mosque of Kufa, dying two days later.

Ali Shah
Ali Hassimshah Omarshah, known as Ali Shah (born August 7, 1959 in Salisbury - now Harare), is a former Zimbabwean cricketer. An all-rounder who batted left-handed and bowled right-arm medium pace, Shah played in three Tests and 28 One Day Internationals (ODIs) for Zimbabwe between 1983 and 1996, and was the first non-white player to represent the country.
Shah played in three Cricket World Cups, in 1983, 1987 and 1992, and was also a member of the team that won the ICC Trophy in 1986 and 1990. Towards the end of his career, he played domestically for Mashonaland in the Logan Cup.
After retiring from playing, Shah became a television commentator and a selector of the national team. He was removed from the latter role in 2004 following the sacking of captain Heath Streak.
Shah is currently living in Harare with his wife Aisha Omarshah, son Zain Omarshah and daughter Fariyah Omarshah. He is currently in business trading in various commodities from around the world.

Wajid Ali Shah was the fifth King of Oudh, holding the position from 13 February 1847 to 11 February 1856. He was the tenth and last Nawab of the state of Awadh in present day Uttar Pradesh in India. He ascended the throne of Awadh in 1847 and ruled for nine years. His kingdom, long protected by the British under treaty, was eventually annexed bloodlessly on 11 February 1856, 2 days before the ninth anniversary of his coronation. The Nawab was exiled to Garden Reach in Metiabruz, then a suburb of Kolkata, where he lived out the rest of his life off a generous pension. Although playback recording was very much in vogue at the time, K.L. Saigal (who sang for himself) convinced director Phani Majumdar that the song 'Babul mora...' should be recorded live while it was being filmed. So Saigal sang on the streets with the entire orchestra playing as the song was being filmed for the movie.
Storyline :-
The film's story tells of two childhood friends, Bhulwa (Saigal) and Manju (Kanan Devi), who grow up to become street singers in Calcutta. Bhulwa dreams of becoming a stage star but it is Manju who succeeds. At the height of her fame Manju almost forgets Bhulwa until at the end - in an obviously symbolic landscape (literally showing a boat washed ashore in a storm) the two are united. Written by Sujit R. "Street Singer" (1937) is one of the earliest Hindi movie after movies started talking in 1931. This movie had K L Saigal, Kanan Devi, Jagdish Sethi, Bikram Kapoor, Nirman, Satya Mukherji etc. This movie was produced by New Theatre of Calcutta and it was directed by Phani Majumdar.
Street Singer (1938) is a landmark creation from New Theatres, Calcutta. Directed by the legendary Phani Majumdar, the star cast of this movie includes KL Saigal, Kaanan Devi. Bikram Kapoor, Subeer, Jagdeesh, Boken Chatto, Chamanlal, Abdul Rehman, Ram Kumari, Nirmal Bannerjee etc. The movie has as many as thirteen songs. The lyrics are created by Aarzoo Lucknowi, and the music composition is by another legend, RC Boral. Four of the more famous and familiar songs are already discussed on this blog, including the inimitable "Baabul Moraa Naihar Chhooto Hi Jaaye". This song is a duet sung by Saigal Saab and Kaanan Devi.
The theme of this movie is a poignant story about two childhood friends, who are musically inclined, and grow up as a pair of street singers in the city of Calcutta. Kaanan Devi plays the role of Manju, a young lady with a very sonorous voice. Saigal Saab plays the role of Bhulwaa, the one with a deep understanding of music, who is a mentor and guru to Manju. Bhulwaa creates and both of them sing on the streets. The duo are noticed by a theatre owner, and they get a chance to play on the stage. As fortune would have it, it is Manju who gets the limelight and the attention. Bhulwaa slowly fades from the scene as Manju is loving the popularity and her moments in the sun, basking to her heart's pleasure. Bhulwaa's dreams are broken, and there is a distancing between the two. Manju almost becomes unmindful of their childhood association, and the mentoring and music lessons she got from Bhulwaa, that have made her what she is today. Bhulwaa leaves with his broken harmonium (and that is when the famous 'Baabul Moraa' song is played). But the separation and distance brings out the actual feelings the two have always had for each other, as an undercurrent to the childhood friendship. And the two are united once again at the end in very dramatic circumstances -- the final scenes show a boat being washed ashore in a storm, symbolizing the ship of their association, weathering the stormy seas of this material world, and yet finding the safety of the shores of love and affection.
This song starts with the two friends in their childhood, and the first part of the song is actually sung by other child artists whose names are no longer available. Very soon the picturization transitions to the time when the two friends are now grown up. They now go about in the streets, singing for making a living. Most of the movie, one can see Bhulwaa with the harmonium, an association that he nurtures with lot of emotion and love, and does not want to part with it. Wajid Ali Shah was the fifth King of Oudh, holding the position from 13 February 1847 to 11 February 1856. He was the tenth and last Nawab of the state of Awadh in present day Uttar Pradesh in India. He ascended the throne of Awadh in 1847 and ruled for nine years. His kingdom, long protected by the British under treaty, was eventually annexed bloodlessly on 11 February 1856, 2 days before the ninth anniversary of his coronation. The Nawab was exiled to Garden Reach in Metiabruz, then a suburb of Kolkata, where he lived out the rest of his life off a generous pension. Although playback recording was very much in vogue at the time, K.L. Saigal (who sang for himself) convinced director Phani Majumdar that the song 'Babul mora...' should be recorded live while it was being filmed. So Saigal sang on the streets with the entire orchestra playing as the song was being filmed for the movie.
Storyline :-
The film's story tells of two childhood friends, Bhulwa (Saigal) and Manju (Kanan Devi), who grow up to become street singers in Calcutta. Bhulwa dreams of becoming a stage star but it is Manju who succeeds. At the height of her fame Manju almost forgets Bhulwa until at the end - in an obviously symbolic landscape (literally showing a boat washed ashore in a storm) the two are united. Written by Sujit R. "Street Singer" (1937) is one of the earliest Hindi movie after movies started talking in 1931. This movie had K L Saigal, Kanan Devi, Jagdish Sethi, Bikram Kapoor, Nirman, Satya Mukherji etc. This movie was produced by New Theatre of Calcutta and it was directed by Phani Majumdar.
Street Singer (1938) is a landmark creation from New Theatres, Calcutta. Directed by the legendary Phani Majumdar, the star cast of this movie includes KL Saigal, Kaanan Devi. Bikram Kapoor, Subeer, Jagdeesh, Boken Chatto, Chamanlal, Abdul Rehman, Ram Kumari, Nirmal Bannerjee etc. The movie has as many as thirteen songs. The lyrics are created by Aarzoo Lucknowi, and the music composition is by another legend, RC Boral. Four of the more famous and familiar songs are already discussed on this blog, including the inimitable "Baabul Moraa Naihar Chhooto Hi Jaaye". This song is a duet sung by Saigal Saab and Kaanan Devi.
The theme of this movie is a poignant story about two childhood friends, who are musically inclined, and grow up as a pair of street singers in the city of Calcutta. Kaanan Devi plays the role of Manju, a young lady with a very sonorous voice. Saigal Saab plays the role of Bhulwaa, the one with a deep understanding of music, who is a mentor and guru to Manju. Bhulwaa creates and both of them sing on the streets. The duo are noticed by a theatre owner, and they get a chance to play on the stage. As fortune would have it, it is Manju who gets the limelight and the attention. Bhulwaa slowly fades from the scene as Manju is loving the popularity and her moments in the sun, basking to her heart's pleasure. Bhulwaa's dreams are broken, and there is a distancing between the two. Manju almost becomes unmindful of their childhood association, and the mentoring and music lessons she got from Bhulwaa, that have made her what she is today. Bhulwaa leaves with his broken harmonium (and that is when the famous 'Baabul Moraa' song is played). But the separation and distance brings out the actual feelings the two have always had for each other, as an undercurrent to the childhood friendship. And the two are united once again at the end in very dramatic circumstances -- the final scenes show a boat being washed ashore in a storm, symbolizing the ship of their association, weathering the stormy seas of this material world, and yet finding the safety of the shores of love and affection.
This song starts with the two friends in their childhood, and the first part of the song is actually sung by other child artists whose names are no longer available. Very soon the picturization transitions to the time when the two friends are now grown up. They now go about in the streets, singing for making a living. Most of the movie, one can see Bhulwaa with the harmonium, an association that he nurtures with lot of emotion and love, and does not want to part with it.
