Zak Penn Says New ‘The Matrix’ Movie Is Happening But Also Not Happening

10 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Earlier this year, Warner Bros. took the red pill, plugged in, and decided to reboot “The Matrix” franchise. The move has hardly a surprise. The studio has been trying to figure out how to get that mega-property back out into the world for years, and had even considered a TV series at one point. As it stands, Zak Penn (“The Avengers,” “Ready Player One”) is writing the movie, but don’t call it a reboot.

‘Blade Runner 2049’ Was Never Going to Be a Blockbuster, But It Can Become Something Cooler: a Cult Classic

14 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Don’t fret, replicants: “Blade Runner 2049” will be just fine. Anyone worried that its disappointing box-office numbers will negatively affect Denis Villeneuve, Ryan Gosling, or Harrison Ford is blissfully unaware of how Hollywood works, and what the film lacks in beaucoup bucks it will more than make up for in cultural cachet.

The reason why is simple: Blockbusters aren’t cool. You know what’s cool? Cult classics. And with little chance of financial success, the critically acclaimed “Blade Runner 2049” is virtually assured to become one.

Such a fate could hardly be more apropos. The original “Blade Runner” was a financial failure that initially divided critics, only coming to enjoy its current vaunted status after its theatrical run went the way of tears in rain. An executive back then may have even made »

Narrated by Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis, the DeNiro of CGI creatures), the trailer's opening segment unveils »

Festival director Jacqueline Lyanga has chosen Netflix Sundance debut “Mudbound” to open the festival on November 9, following another showing at the New York Film Festival and just before its day-and-date debut November 17 in theaters and on Netflix.

The streaming service carries high awards hopes for the acclaimed Dee Rees post-World War II drama co-written by Virgil Williams and Rees about two farming families in the rural South, starring Carey Mulligan, Jason Clarke, Jason Mitchell, Garrett Hedlund, and an unrecognizable Mary J. Blige. Set in the Mississippi Delta, the period drama features stunning epic cinematography by AFI Conservatory alumna Rachel Morrison. Harvey Weinstein Could Be Criminally Charged Over 2004 Rape Claim – But Probably Won’t Be

7 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Harvey Weinstein could face criminal charges over accusations made by at least one of the women who accused the disgraced mogul of rape in a New Yorker story published on Tuesday. But it would be an uphill climb for the prosecution. According to Connecticut criminal-defense attorney Norman Pattis, the conduct that former aspiring actress Lucia Evans described — being forced to perform oral sex on Weinstein in a 2004 meeting at Miramax’s Manhattan headquarters — would constitute either rape or aggravated rape, depending on the circumstances. That’s a felony with no statute of limitations in the eyes of New York law. »

Ryan Coogler Speaks Out About ‘Fruitvale’ Distributor Harvey Weinstein: ‘Rape is a Human Rights Violation’

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

When Ryan Coogler brought his first feature “Fruitvale Station” to the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, it was Harvey Weinstein who bought and distributed the breakout film. The success of “Fruitvale” helped kickstart the director’s career, which continued with “Creed” and next summer’s “Black Panther” in just five years since Weinstein released the film.

Coogler has now addressed the multiple accusations being made by several women who say they have been sexually harassed or assaulted by Weinstein.

“I am disturbed and saddened at the news that several women have been victimized by a person I had come to know through the purchase of my first feature film,” said Coogler in statement sent to IndieWire. “While I had no further business dealings with Harvey Weinstein, and no knowledge of this predatory behavior, my career did benefit from this brief involvement. Because of that, I feel a responsibility to speak up on this issue. »

‘This Is Us’: Every Sylvester Stallone Scene Ranked By Its Inspirational Power

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

“People can be good” seems like an oddly basic concept to celebrate, but given current events, “This Is Us” delivered the message audiences needed most Tuesday night: People can be good, and sometimes those people are Sylvester Stallone.

In Episode 3, “Déjà Vu,” the most inspirational action star of all-time guest-starred on TV’s most inspirational series and, well, things got emotional. Stallone was invited to join the series by his “Rocky Balboa” co-star Milo Ventimiglia, who played Rocky Jr. in the 2006 film, so it was doubly fitting to learn that Jack was a die-hard Stallone fan in the series. Clever work, Dan Fogelman.

But how much of the good vibes came from Stallone’s presence and how much came from the writing? Did the presence of a three-time Oscar nominee distract from the series’ central storyline or enhance it? And most importantly, how did viewers feel after each one of Stallone’s scenes? »
