The W3C has rejected the appeal to remove (or reconsider) the EME/DRM Web Standard. Thus making EME (a framework for DRM) now a formal recommended W3C standard. Votes cast by members is being kept secret.

Digital rights
The term digital rights describes the human rights that allow individuals to access, use, create, and publish digital media or to access and use computers, other electronic devices, or communications networks. The term is particularly related to the protection and realization of existing rights, such as the right to privacy or freedom of expression, in the context of new digital technologies, especially the Internet. Internet access is recognized as a right by the laws of several countries.
Human rights and the Internet
A number of human rights have been identified as relevant with regard to the Internet. These include freedom of expression, data protection and privacy and freedom of association. Furthermore, the right to education and multilingualism, consumer rights, and capacity building in the context of the right to development have also been identified.
The Internet is a global public good that should be accessible to all and respectful of the rights of others, said an influential Jesuit magazine.

Digital rights management
Digital rights management (DRM) schemes are various access control technologies that are used to restrict usage of proprietary hardware and copyrighted works. DRM technologies try to control the use, modification, and distribution of copyrighted works (such as software and multimedia content), as well as systems within devices that enforce these policies.
The use of digital rights management is not universally accepted. Proponents of DRM argue that it is necessary to prevent intellectual property from being copied freely, just as physical locks are needed to prevent personal property from being stolen, that it can help the copyright holder maintain artistic control, and that it can ensure continued revenue streams. Those opposed to DRM contend there is no evidence that DRM helps prevent copyright infringement, arguing instead that it serves only to inconvenience legitimate customers, and that DRM helps big business stifle innovation and competition. Furthermore, works can become permanently inaccessible if the DRM scheme changes or if the service is discontinued. DRM can also restrict users from exercising their legal rights under the copyright law, such as backing up copies of CDs or DVDs, lending materials out through a library, accessing works in the public domain, or using copyrighted materials for research and education under the fair use doctrine, and under French law. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and the Free Software Foundation (FSF) consider the use of DRM systems to be an anti-competitive practice.

Copy protection
Copy protection, also known as content protection, copy prevention and copy restriction, is any effort designed to prevent the reproduction of software, films, music, and other media, usually for copyright reasons. Various methods have been devised to prevent reproduction so that companies will gain benefit from each person who obtains an authorized copy of their product. Unauthorized copying and distribution accounted for $2.4 billion in lost revenue in the United States alone in the 1990s, and is assumed to be causing impact on revenues in the music and the game industry, leading to proposal of stricter copyright laws such as PIPA. Some methods of copy protection have also led to criticisms because it caused inconvenience for honest consumers, or it secretly installed additional or unwanted software to detect copying activities on the consumer's computer. Making copy protection effective while protecting consumer rights is still an ongoing problem with media publication.

DRM is an systematic approach to copyright protection for digital goods. Its purpose is to prevent unauthorized redistribution of products and restrict the ways consumers can copy content they’ve acquired. Digital Rights Management is nothing new in the software industry. In fact, you may have even been using it in the 80s when you were booting up some of those DOS games. Any time you watch media on services such as Netflix, Hulu or Amazon, you are also utilizing DRM, although this is handled in a very different way. These services often utilize DRM schemes such as AES or PlayReady. -

My goal with this video is to give an overview of what DRM is, how it works, and illustrate the history behind it so that you can understand why it is still around today.
DRM is an systematic approach to copyright protection for digital goods. Its purpose is to prevent unauthorized redistribution of products and restrict the ways consumers can copy content they’ve acquired.
Digital Rights Management is nothing new in the software industry. In fact, you may have even been using it in the 80s when you were booting up some of those DOS games.
Any time you watch media on services such as Netflix, Hulu or Amazon, you are also utilizing DRM, although this is handled in a very different way. These services often utilize DRM schemes such as AES or PlayReady.
