27 Sept 2017 – Gay anarchist squatters reportedly scrawled rebellious slogans and symbols on the brick walls of the former headquarters for Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras organisers before it was demolished.
The group appear to have moved in to the dilapidated warehouse in Petersham, in Sydney’s inner west, after it was abandoned eight years ago (pictured)
On one wall hung a banner reading ‘Queers Against Cops, Capitalism and Homonationalism’ (pictured)
A two-metre mural of a police car on fire was painted on a nearby wall.
‘Fuck marriage, we want revenge!’ and ‘You only gave us rights when we gave you riots! Queer power,’ was written in another room, which housed a circle of chairs.
Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Staff left the warehouse in July 2009 after using the facility for more than six years.
Organisers told reporters that they were surprised to see the condition of the building shown in the pictures and that they didn’t know what had happened after they moved out.
The new Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras headquarters is now located in Darlinghurst.
