William Randolph "Cozy" Cole (October 17, 1909 – January 9, 1981) was an American jazz drummer who scored a #1 Cashbox magazine hit with the songs "Topsy I" and "Topsy II". "Topsy II" peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100, and at #1 on the R&B chart. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. The track peaked at #29 in the UK Singles Chart in 1958. The recording contained a lengthy drum solo, and was one of the few drum solo recordings that ever made the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The single was issued on the tiny Brooklyn-based Love Records label. Cole also struck the Hot 100 with "Turvy II", which made it as high as #36 in the chart for the week ending January 4, 1959.
William Randolph Cole was born in 1909 in East Orange, New Jersey. His first music job was with Wilbur Sweatman in 1928. In 1930 he played for Jelly Roll Morton's Red Hot Peppers, recording an early drum solo on "Load of Cole". He spent 1931–33 with Blanche Calloway, 1933-34 with Benny Carter, 1935-36 with Willie Bryant, 1936-38 with Stuff Smith's small combo, and 1938-42 with Cab Calloway. In 1942, he was hired by CBS Radio music director Raymond Scott as part of network radio's first mixed-race orchestra. After that he played with Louis Armstrong's All Stars.
Phil and Dan Brookes, otherwise known as the Brookes Brothers, are drum and bass producers from London, UK. The two brothers discovered a love for the more soulful sounds of drum and bass around the turn of the millennium, but it wasn't until 2006 that they gained public notice.
In 2006 they surfaced with "Portal" / "Desert Island" on Danny Wheeler’s W10 imprint. This was followed by "Verano", a collaborative effort with Nick Douwma, otherwise known as Sub Focus. In 2007, the Brookes Brothers were exclusively signed to DJ Fresh and Adam F’s label Breakbeat Kaos. Their first release was "Hard Knocks" / "Mistakes", receiving major radio support from Zane Lowe, Pete Tong and the Trophy Twins, as well as staple drum & bass DJ’s such as Andy C, Grooverider, and Adam F. The double A-side entered the UK Indie Chart at number 25. In 2007, collaborated with another rising drum and bass star, Culture Shock, creating the monster track "Rework". In 2008, the brothers continue to assault the market with a host of big tunes such as F-Zero, Gold Rush, Dawn Treader and Crackdown. They hold residencies in both Fabric and Herbal nightclubs, playing regular national and international DJ sets. Their self-titled debut album was finally released in 2011, under the label Breakbeat Kaos.

David "Panama" Francis (December 21, 1918 in Miami, Florida – November 13, 2001 in Orlando, Florida) was an American swing jazz drummer.
He began performing at the age of eight, and booked his first night club at the age of thirteen. His career took off after he moved to New York City in 1938. Early collaborations included Tab Smith, Billy Hick's Sizzling Six, the Roy Eldridge Orchestra, and six years with Lucky Millinder's Orchestra at Harlem's Savoy Ballroom.
Panama Francis spent five years recording and touring with Cab Calloway. He also played with Duke Ellington, Tommy Dorsey, Ray Conniff, and Sy Oliver, becoming a highly successful studio drummer. He recorded with John Lee Hooker, Eubie Blake, Ella Fitzgerald, Illinois Jacquet, Ray Charles, Mahalia Jackson and Big Joe Turner. As rhythm and blues and rock and roll went mainstream Francis became even more sought after. He drummed on the Elvis Presley demos, and he is featured on hits by the Four Seasons ("Big Girls Don't Cry" and "Walk Like a Man"), the Platters ("Only You", "The Great Pretender", "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" and "My Prayer"), Bobby Darin ("Splish Splash"), Neil Sedaka ("Calendar Girl"), and Dion ("The Wanderer").
Cole Albert Porter (June 9, 1891 – October 15, 1964) was an American composer and songwriter. Born to a wealthy family in Indiana, he defied the wishes of his domineering grandfather and took up music as a profession. Classically trained, he was drawn towards musical theatre. After a slow start, he began to achieve success in the 1920s, and by the 1930s he was one of the major songwriters for the Broadway musical stage. Unlike many successful Broadway composers, Porter wrote the lyrics, as well as the music, for his songs.
After a serious horseback riding accident in 1937, Porter was left disabled and in constant pain, but he continued to work. His shows of the early 1940s did not contain the lasting hits of his best work of the 1920s and '30s, but in 1948 he made a triumphant comeback with his most successful musical, Kiss Me, Kate. It won the first Tony Award for Best Musical.
Porter's other musicals include Fifty Million Frenchmen, DuBarry Was a Lady, Anything Goes, Can-Can and Silk Stockings. His numerous hit songs include "Night and Day", "Begin the Beguine", "I Get a Kick Out of You", "Well, Did You Evah!", "I've Got You Under My Skin", "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" and "You're the Top". He also composed scores for films from the 1930s to the 1950s, including Born to Dance (1936), which featured the song "You'd Be So Easy to Love"; Rosalie (1937), which featured "In the Still of the Night"; High Society (1956), which included "True Love"; and Les Girls (1957).

This reception was so tastefully executed. I loved the mix of tissue balls and crystal chandeliers. Tre chic. They had a delicious ice cream bar of sorts. Yes to that business. The father-daughter dance brought tears to everyone's eyes. That was my favorite part of the evening. So so precious. Love this couple.

A small ensemble, with a big band sound, the Stardust Trio specializes in the danceable music of the twenties, thirties and forties. The nostalgic sound of ALAN SHELTON’s muted horn, along with PHIL DE TORE’s rhythm and mellow vocals, are a perfect compliment to Jay’s solid stride piano. Leader, JAY C. MUNNS, has specialized in the great song hits of the twenties, thirties and forties for four decades, and has performed for two U.S. presidents and a host of celebrities including Bob Hope, Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart. Alan Shelton is a vintage jazz specialist and leader of his own Royale Garden Dixieland Band. Phil De Tore has been performing since 1937 and has worked with artists including Jerry Vale, Vicky Carr, and Nat King Cole. The Stardust Trio brings back the era of elegant and da...

Now here are some pretty awful liner notes for what is an otherwise pretty terrific space age pop percussion LP: ["Mr. Percussion Bobby Christian's career ranges from percussionist with top names of the classical and pop field to his current status as leader of his own dance band. From 1944 to 1950, Christian was percussionist with the NBC orchestra in Chicago under the baton of Dr. Roy Shield. In 1950, he began a five-year span with the house band at WABC, New York, going with the NBC Symphony of the Air in late 1955. The Conductor was the late Arturo Toscannini. With this orchestra, Christian toured the Orient. After Toscannini's death, Christian returned to Chicago and formed his dance band, which has been playing top ballrooms and hotels since. In New York City I made an interview with the Hungarian born clarinetist Mr. Joe Muranyi. This excellent musician worked with such jazz giants as Lional Hampton, Roy Eldridge, Cozy Cole, Marty Napoleon, Dany Barker, Tyree Glenn, Vic Dickenson, Wild Bill Davison, Bobby Hackett, Max Kaminsky, Eddie Condon, and from 1967 on he was a member of the Louis Armstrong All Stars. Although I do not consider myself a pianist, at the end of the interview we play together a little bit, performing W. C. Handy's St. Louis Blues.
Sociologist Jonathan Cole visited Dartmouth on May 8 to speak about the history and future of American universities. In this interview he talks about new trends in teaching, learning and research. He also reveals some of his predictions about the future of higher education.
