Situated by Jackson Avenue at Crane Street and Davis Street, Long Island City, NY 11101, 5 Pointz claims to be the "world's premiere 'graffiti Mecca,' showcasing aerosol artists from around the globe.
A short walk from P.S. 1/MoMA, 5 Pointz is a 'living collage of graffiti art' covering a converted warehouse full of artist studios, with the building's owner, Long Island developer Gerald Wolkoff, giving consent and encouragement to spraycan artists.
Closed for about a year and nearly destroyed by vandals, the 200,000 square-foot space was turned into an outdoor art exhibit space in 2001, and curated by Jonathan Cohen (aka Meres One).
Tagged 5Pointz: “The Institute of Higher Burnin'”, the complex hosts 200 artists paying below market rents for studio space.
Entrance to 5 Pointz. It's 'informally open' mornings and afternoons during the week and on weekends, with occasional events on the weekend.
Trains going over the elevated railway make a right racket!
