Am I to old to become a professional software programmer?

I've always been interested in software development but I'm 33 and I'm afraid it's too late for me. Let me address this question by telling a story. I recently ran into a former high school classmate Tommy, it turned out that Tommy is a mobile freelance software developer. This guy is earning $200K/year writing mobile applications for different companies. The interesting part of his story is that Tommy wrote his first line of code at the age of 33.... 33 He wasn't one of these 13 year olds writing code in his parent's basement. This guy was an entrepreneur and owned several businesses Then at the age of 33 he decided to get into mobile development so he sat down and wrote his first line of code. Six months later he landed his first high paying client. Three years later he is earning 200K a year writing mobile applications So if you think it's too late for you it's not. by the way I asked Tommy if he was duper smart and he said no. tommy was average in high school and college and said anyone could do what he did. See companies don't care if you are 20 or 30 or even 40. They don't care if you went to college. All companies care about is if you can deliver the software they need. Companies care if you can build the web application that will increase their sales, save them money, or help them deal with government regulations. Now you do lose something when you get a late start. When you are young and in the traditional college age of 21 to 26 or so, you can convince companies to hire you based on potential. It's not easy, but when you are young it is possible to convince a company to hire you based on potential rather than ability. However, when you are older this is no longer a possibility. Companies are not going to hire a thirty something based on potential. No... after you celebrate your 27th birthday you sell yourself on skills and ability and not on potential. This is why I love freelancing. You simply start with small easy software projects and gradually work your way up the freelancing ladder leveling up your software skills as you go. And here is another secret if you ultimately want a traditional corporate software development job Freelancing is a way to get it. Just by putting yourself out there and completing projects and meeting people job opportunities will present themselves to you. So if you are wondering if it is too late for you, the answer is no.
