A scientist is a person engaging in a systematic activity to acquire knowledge. In a more restricted sense, a scientist may refer to an individual who uses the scientific method. The person may be an expert in one or more areas of science. This article focuses on the more restricted use of the word. Scientists perform research toward a more comprehensive understanding of nature, including physical, mathematical and social realms.
Philosophy is a distinct activity that is not generally considered science. Philosophers aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of intangible aspects of reality and experience that cannot be physically measured.
Scientists are also distinct from engineers, those who design, build, and maintain devices for particular situations; however, no engineer attains that title without significant study of science and the scientific method. When science is done with a goal toward practical utility, it is called applied science. An applied scientist may not be designing something in particular, but rather is conducting research with the aim of developing new technologies and practical methods. When science is done with an inclusion of intangible aspects of reality it is called natural philosophy.
The Scientist is a professional magazine intended for life scientists. Coverage includes reviews of widely noticed research papers, informing its audience of current research, updates to technology, updates to career information, profiles of scientists achieving notoriety, as well as other columns and reports of interest to its audience.
The editor-in-chief is Mary Beth Aberlin. The magazine has been published monthly since 1986 and is available in print and online through personal or institutional subscription. The Scientist was published by the Faculty of 1000 until October 2011. Its closure was announced in October 2011 but then the LabX Media Group announced its intent to purchase and continue publishing it. The Group officially acquired the magazine at the end of October 2011.
The Scientist was founded by Eugene Garfield. Its aim is to provide print and online coverage of the latest developments in life sciences research, technology, and business. Subject matter covered by the journal includes:

Social media are computer-mediated tools that allow people or companies to create, share, or exchange information, career interests, ideas, and pictures/videos in virtual communities and networks. Social media is defined as "a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content." Furthermore, social media depend on mobile and web-based technologies to create highly interactive platforms through which individuals and communities share, co-create, discuss, and modify user-generated content. They introduce substantial and pervasive changes to communication between businesses, organizations, communities, and individuals. These changes are the focus of the emerging field of technoself studies. Social media differ from traditional or industrial media in many ways, including quality, reach, frequency, usability, immediacy, and permanence. Social media operate in a dialogic transmission system (many sources to many receivers). This is in contrast to traditional media that operates under a monologic transmission model (one source to many receivers).

In the closing months of World War II, defeat was looming for the Germans. The invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944 -- D-Day -- opened a second Allied front, and the Allies began overtaking a host of German positions; Paris was liberated on August 25; Romania and Bulgaria surrendered in quick succession. But the Nazis did not intend to go down without a fight -- and without inflicting as much damage as possible on the Allies. To do so, they employed or planned to employ an increasingly deadly array of military weapons -- from ballistic missiles to rocket planes to, perhaps, the atomic bomb. The British, American, and Russian governments were not content to sit idly by, waiting to be slammed by the advanced technology. Covert teams of commandos and agents were sent ahead of the front lin...

The Scientists are an influential post-punk band from Perth, Australia, led by Kim Salmon, initially known as Exterminators and then Invaders. The band had two primary incarnations: the Perth-based punk band of the late 1970s and the Sydney/London-based swamp rock band of the 1980s. The Scientists were much more influential than their minimal commercial success would indicate, lending their influence to artists such as Mudhoney and New York's downtown indie scene of the early 1990s.

But we are discovering new things all the time, and many of these discoveries are quite shocking-even for scientists. We know different areas of our brain are used for different things, but can they be rewired somehow? Human anatomy is too complex to be combined with an animal’s to make a chimera, right? Where do we draw the limit to the experiments we conduct in the name of science? And then there is the realm of medicine an...

Subscribe to Naked Science - http://goo.gl/wpc2Q1 Every other Wednesday we present a new video, so join us to see the truth laid bare... Ours is said to be a Godless age, yet billions remain faithful to religions thousands of years old. Scientist Colin Blakemore examines Christianity's relationship with science, arguing that science is the biggest challenge Christianity has ever faced. For more than 1,500 years Christians saw the bible as the primary source of knowledge, but in the 17th century a new movement emerged that challenged the Christian view of the world, the Scientific Revolution. During the Renaissance the rising power of science forced the Catholic Church to silence rebellious scientists. By the 19th century the enlightenment had given rise to a new generation of scienti...
An armour (spelled armor in the US) is a protective covering that is used to prevent damage from being inflicted to an object, individual, or vehicle by direct contact weapons or projectiles, usually during combat, or from damage caused by a potentially dangerous environment or action (e.g., cycling, construction sites, etc.). The word "armour" began to appear in the Middle Ages as a derivative of Old French. It is dated from 1297 as a "mail, defensive covering worn in combat". The word originates from the Old French armure, itself derived from the Latin armatura meaning "arms and/or equipment", with the root armare meaning "arms or gear". Armour has been used throughout recorded history. It has been made from a variety of materials, beginning with rudimentary leather protection and evolvi...

Operation Paperclip was the United States Office of Strategic Services (OSS) program in which more than 1,500 Nazis, primarily scientists but also engineers and technicians, were brought to the United States from Nazi Germany for government employment starting in 1945 and increasing in the aftermath of World War II.[2] It was conducted by the Joint Intelligence Objectives Agency (JIOA) and in the context of the burgeoning Cold War. One purpose of Operation Paperclip was to deny Nazi scientific expertise and knowledge to the Soviet Union and the United Kingdom, as well as to inhibit post-war Germany from redeveloping its military research capabilities. A related course of action was taken by the US in regards to Japanese human experimenters employed from Unit 731. The Soviet Union had the s...
Data scientists inhabit such an ever-changing landscape of languages, packages, and frameworks that it can be easy to succumb to tool fatigue. If this sounds familiar, you may have missed the increasing popularity of Linux containers in the DevOps world, in particular Docker. Michelangelo D’Agostino demonstrates Docker’s many benefits, from making data science code and environments more portable and shareable to making the transition from development to production more seamless to giving data scientists a common basis for collaborating with software engineers, and explains why Docker deserves a place in every data scientist’s toolkit. Drawing on several successfully executed case studies from Civis Analytics, Michelangelo offers an introduction to Docker and DockerHub and explores the too...

J. Krishnamurti - Ojai 1982 - Discussion with Scientists 1 - Roots of psychological disorder Summary: Q: What is the source of psychological disorder? Is not the self the beginning of all disorder? I have created society through my anxiety, through my desire for security, through my desire to have power. Like the animal. It's biologically inherited. Also my own individualistic activity has created this society. Is it possible to be free of my conditioning? If my relationship with life is not "right" how can I find out something that's immensely beyond all this, beyond time, beyond thought, beyond measure? Will knowledge transform me? Is there a deep, abiding security? --- This channel is managed by the Krishnamurti Foundation Trust, UK, and by the Krishnamurti Foundation of A...

You shoulda made me a drunkard
Shoulda made me a liar
Made me a preacher
With a head full of fire
You coulda made me a gambler

Why'd you make me a scientist
Is this the best you've got
I'm not impressed
Anything you can do
I'll equate and project
I chose water over wine
Jars of formaldehyde
Think of everything I missed
